It's an outrageous transfer of wealth from poor to rich. And those athletes who profit, are barely if at all better than thousands of others who didn't quite make it.

You can go back to the time before the Civil War and slavery. The owners of enslaved people felt it was justified to keep them enslaved and to enrich themselves, because it was what God wanted. They cited the Bible as condoning slavery, and insisted that the enslaved were much better off in that condition than if they were to ever be freed. So on religious grounds, and economic grounds Slavery was justified. They even had scholars from Harvard insisting that enslaved people were made differently from White people. Genetically different, and thus sub human. This was the birthplace of White Christian Nationalism in all its iterations. So when you say white male Christians didn't vote for the Black woman married to a Jew, it's not even a little bit surprising. Elements of the Christian Nationalist views, which essentially are White Supremacy, are part of Catholicism too. It's a cancer that attaches to the more conservative elements of most religious sects. The question, often, is to what degree does it manifest itself. So you may have someone who is "just fine" with a lot of stuff, but he get into the voting booth and there's his chance to really speak his mind he might never do publicly.
