Karine Jean-Pierre says Biden was forced to drop out by ‘firing squad’
While speaking at a forum at Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics on Wednesday, Jean-Pierre did not mince words when defending Biden.
“I have never seen anything like that,” said Jean-Pierre, according to The Harvard Crimson. “It was truly, truly unfortunate. And I think it hurt us more than folks realized to have done that.”
Now that the dust has settled, Jean-Pierre, who long credited Biden for her historic role as the first Black and openly LGBTQ+ person to serve as White House press secretary, said the effort to push out Biden was like a “firing squad,” the Crimson reported.

[quote] Jean-Pierre’s visit to Harvard came a day after her successor, Karoline Leavitt, announced on Tuesday that the Trump White House would take control of the presidential press pool system, which has for decades been independently controlled by media outlets, which includes those that are nonpartisan, left-leaning and right-leaning. The move from the Trump administration has been condemned by the White House Correspondents’ Association and others as an affront to the First Amendment rights of the free press.
[quote] By contrast, Jean-Pierre said the Biden administration made it a priority to foster a healthy relationship between the press and the White House. “We tried to bring that norm back because we understood how important it was to have the freedom of the press,” said the former Biden spokesperson. “Even when we didn’t agree with them, it didn’t matter, even when it was contentious in that room.”
[quote] Responding directly to Leavitt’s announcement of the White House takeover of the press pool, Jean-Pierre admitted, “What I am seeing now is scary,” adding, “When you take that away, when you do not do that, then where’s the democracy? Where’s that healthy back-and-forth? Where’s the accountability?”
She's right.

She did a lot of damage to the perception of the Biden administration. She should’ve been fired along with multiple other people, but Joe couldn’t bring himself to fire anyone.

Has there been any explanation for why Biden’s protective handlers didn’t pull the plug on the early debate? No early debate, no Harris as the nominee. They even had the cover given them by a David Frum Atlantic article in which, pre-debate, it was argued that Biden should refuse to debate on the grounds that he would not share a stage with a convicted felon.

Jean-Pierre seems to be agreeing with the Trump administration, forgetting that everyone who works in the White House — from POTUS to the aided to the aides — takes an oath to the Constitution, not the man in the Oval. I'm sure that she views herself as very loyal to Biden and it's hard to admit that someone who you admire, believe in and work for made a horrendous mistake. Biden promised to be a transitional president, to be the last old man who stepped in to save the world from the abject failure that Trump was in his first term. He was supposed to guide the nation and the world out of the abyss, and then turn to preparing his successor for the job. Instead he never made that turn and thought he could run again even when his advisors told he he shouldn't, when the pundits told him he was too old, when the media started ripping him a new asshole over being in his 80s and even when the polling showed him losing the election by double digits. It took the entire party apparatus to force him off the ticket, armed with the data that showed him losing so badly that there would be few Democrats left standing anywhere in the nation if he stayed in to move him off the dime and make way. It was too late. And it left the wrong candidate in his place.
So if there was a firing squad in the White House taking out Biden, then she'd better look herself in the mirror and accept her responsibility in the self destructive behavior that wrought the most consequential electoral loss in our lifetimes. Jean-Pierre was Biden's direct line into the media's state of mind, and she should have made it as clear as possible that Biden had lost the media.

How can Karine be found wanting compared to KKKaroline Leavitt?!! Karine is polished, poised, smart and almost always honest. KKKaroline is dumb and petulant and she berates, lies and obsfucates freely. The fallacy of white supremacy is that whites and non-whites are measured by the same performance standards. That NEVER happens. Everyone working in the Trump administration would be deemed grossly unqualified if they were Black. Since they are white, the issue of whether they are qualified is moot. The presumption is that white people are always qualified, even after they demonstrate they are not.

The polls had been showing that democratic voters didn't want Biden to run for a second term. It was the democratic establishment, along with Biden and his administration that kept stonewalling the idea and pushed him to run.
People had been saying he should reconsider for a least a year prior to the disastrous debate. No one listened.
The sense of entitlement coming from Biden, his wife and his administration members is something else. Zero accountability for any of their choices and the deliberate neglect of what the public wanted.

I think it was all planned from the beginning. There are never debates in June. Biden would fake confusion, Kamala would step up... and her Obama-like energy would snuff out the tired, hateful Trump campaign. It worked and she was winning.

No snark from me, R39. While I of course saw many posts - mine included - that cast doubt on Harris's chances, I have no memory of threads/posts pre-6/27/24 that argued against Biden's decision to run for re-election. Not saying such doesn't exist, but I have no memory of same. If they do, that sentiment was not exactly prevalent.

Maybe I'm somewhat misunderstanding people's anger about this. She's leaving the Democratic Party, but not to join the Republican Party. As an Independent, she can still openly support great Democrats like Eric Swalwell, Jamie Raskin, Wes Moore, AOC, etc, but she might not feel too warmly towards Schumer, and some of the other so-called heads who should have stepped down years ago.
Perhaps she feels that as an independent, she can be more outspoken about some of the Dem leaders.
What am I missing?

There were plenty of opinion polls from around that time (and before) that showed a substantial number of Democratic voters didn't want him to run again, so I'm sure it was discussed.
July 17, 2024: Nearly two-thirds of Democrats say Biden should withdraw from the presidential race (AP-NORC poll).
Sep. 7, 2023: Two-thirds of Democrat-leaning voters say the party should not nominate Biden for a second term (CNN poll).
July 17, 2023: 64% of Democratic voters say they don't want Biden to run in 2024 (NYT/Siena College poll).

R43 here. Back in the early 2020's I had never been much a fan of KJP. I thought she was overwrought, militant, and well, kinda boring. But during that Q&A when she literally stood up to protect candidate Kamala Harris's safety, I was impressed. Once she became Press Secretary, she showed herself to be quite the badass, mostly in good ways.
I've been mistaken before, (Corey Booker, anyone?). But I think she's authentic. Like so many, especially of color, she feels betrayed by her own party. Possibly for reasons we don't know that her book will reveal. If declaring her independence will get more people to read what she has to say, it just might be a workable strategy.
I feel betrayed. Who here doesn't? I'm willing to give her leeway, at least for now. What the fuck else can we do?

He was right to drop out, even if he was forced to. At least with a less cringe candidate, our losses in Congress were limited.
He shouldn’t have run. Is it unfair he was taken down by the rightwing propaganda machine? Yes. But we need to adjust to the new reality. Fox News and other rightwing propaganda is here to stay and there’s nothing we can do about it. If they have destroyed a candidate, we shouldn’t run that person.
