I can't believe the orange blob said infront of Keir Starmer from the UK yesterday that the rest of the world pays the tariffs to the US....fu*ckin' hell... Starmer would have been laughing his tits off all the way back across The Pond.

When Lindsay Belle goes abroad, Trump will charge foreign government officials, a percentage increase in surtax for them to have access to her. That doesn’t bother the Saudis, but other foreign dignitaries will not like it.

Immediately, depending on the industry or sector.

Groceries (perishable goods) will be felt immediately.

Other sectors will be staved off from immediate impact, depending on surplus and whether or not a vigorous supply chain already exists. Even so, industries that target consumers’ disposable income will be forced to deliver tangibles and services very quickly, when adjusting for loss, while being forced to do it with a lot less.

Expect horrible quality for almost anything & everything, as well.

by Anonymousreply 11February 28, 2025 5:10 PM

What a mess. I hope Canada takes this opportunity to develop closer relationships with other allies.

Is there a tariff on China? I didn’t see it mentioned. They are a problem.

by Anonymousreply 24March 4, 2025 2:29 AM

The tariffs will harm allies but at least the rest of the world won’t hate us so hopefully we can form new trade partnerships

by Anonymousreply 25March 4, 2025 2:29 AM

I told you not to worry about farmers. They might be pissed if they lose their subsidies. I guess this is great for agribusiness too.

by Anonymousreply 26March 4, 2025 2:31 AM

Trump has to spin himself out before we know the damage. No one seems to be challenging him on anything because they are too afraid. A couple more months plus a disaster or two and he’s kaput.

by Anonymousreply 27March 4, 2025 2:32 AM

R26, are you insane? The farmers just lost their farms?

by Anonymousreply 28March 4, 2025 2:50 AM

It’s about to hurt March enough to hurt the entire Q1 economic data, and when that comes out in early April everyone will more clearly understand we have entered the Trump 2.0 Recession.

by Anonymousreply 29March 4, 2025 2:51 AM

How much did it cost to bail out farmers in tRump 1.0 ?

by Anonymousreply 30March 4, 2025 3:06 AM

To review. The US federal government under Trump 2.0 wants to:

Give Eastern Europe to Putin

Occupy all of North America, from Greenland to Colombia

Let kids die of diseases

Let planes crash

Persecute enemies of the state

Destroy the dollar, replace with Bitcoin

End democracy and install autocracy

by Anonymousreply 31March 4, 2025 3:18 AM

...and blame it all on the Democrats, R31.

by Anonymousreply 32March 4, 2025 5:41 AM

In a way, it's good that President Musk is rolling all of this out so fast and broadly. Usually, it takes about 18 months to 2 years for a president's policies to take effect, so a lot of the really bad stuff doesn't come before the midterms. This go-round will be different. The 10% tariff on China is going to be felt in consumer goods in about 3 months, and just when the shock of 12% - 15% inflation hits, prices will go up again because of the delayed additional 10% starting tomorrow if Trump goes through with it; I'm hoping there will be a last-minute "deal" struck and he backs down. Otherwise, we're looking at an annualized inflation rate somewhere between 18% and 30% by the end of the year.

by Anonymousreply 33March 4, 2025 5:46 AM

Produce will spike up very quickly. We import a shit ton of it from Mexico.

by Anonymousreply 34March 4, 2025 6:08 AM

Right away- the question is, why the hell is he doing this. Is he so dumb that he thinks all manufacturing of goods will be in the US? Does he think it will increase revenue? Punish Canada and Mexico for what? Immigrants?

And his firing of Federal employees and taking down of departments is v literally killing peopke effected without make a buck in the Federal deficit. It’s really just a dictator’s power grab aided by an immigrant oligarch who is engaged in a quid pro quo.

Lordy the GOP is rotten (they know Trump is a con) and its supporters either stupid beyond comprehension or simply put their bigotry above all else.

“Lower prices aren’t fun for farmers,” said Aaron Lehman, president of the Iowa Farmers Union board. He led a virtual town hall meeting with U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican, Monday that ended shortly before Trump's post.

I think part of the problem is Dump doesn’t know how tariffs work, and his supporters certainly don’t. Surely there must be a handful of Republicans in Congress who do.

by Anonymousreply 42March 4, 2025 12:09 PM

[quote] I think part of the problem is Dump doesn’t know how tariffs work, and his supporters certainly don’t.

Neither do people on DL. There’s only one reply that acknowledges that the tariff has any effect on people in other countries. On the thread about Canada and tariffs, there is zero recognition that the tariffs have any effect on Canadians and the Canadian economy. It’s incredible that there is almost a universal belief that tariffs will only hurt the U.S. The reality is that all sides get hurt.

by Anonymousreply 43March 4, 2025 12:41 PM

One area where Biden and Trump found common cause—-the use of tariffs by their admin.

by Anonymousreply 44March 4, 2025 12:45 PM

by Anonymousreply 45March 4, 2025 12:46 PM

Farmers may sell their products domestically, but look up where most of the potash they need comes from.

by Anonymousreply 46March 4, 2025 12:48 PM

I watched something saying it will good for Asia. Good for them I guess

by Anonymousreply 47March 4, 2025 12:52 PM

I think many on here realize that US tariffs will decrease its demand for goods from other countries, R44. Like the aforementioned Canadian potash - if US farmers buy less potash from Canada because Dump’s tariff makes it too expensive, then Canada experiences a glut. Both sides get hurt. And the effects are lasting. At a time when people are losing jobs and wages are stagnating, this will be a disaster for all countries if the war continues. Just when things were good after Covid.

by Anonymousreply 48March 4, 2025 12:52 PM

Canada is already making deal with other countries to export raw materials, R48. There will be pain for sure, but if the trade war continues long-term, the US will be isolated, which is exactly what Trump and his voters wanted. Oh, well.

by Anonymousreply 49March 4, 2025 12:56 PM

I'm tracking the price of the kitchen appliances I purchased in November, correctly anticipating this. I'll check in once a month to see how much they cost. They were assembled in Tennessee, but virtually all the components are imported from China (controls) and Canada (steel and aluminum).

by Anonymousreply 50March 4, 2025 12:56 PM

[quote]I watched something saying it will good for Asia.

Fareed Zakaria called it a gift to Asia.

“What's going to happen is southeast Asian manufacturers, most many of whom are Chinese-owned, or the Chinese are using or using as a back door to get in, are going to be privileged here because there are no tariffs on Malaysia, there's no tariffs on Indonesia, there are no tariffs on Thailand.”

"[Trump] doesn't realize that what he's doing is actually benefiting China, benefiting Japan, benefiting Korea. And by the way, the American consumer pays the bill.”

by Anonymousreply 51March 4, 2025 12:59 PM

china rejoices

by Anonymousreply 52March 4, 2025 1:00 PM

I hope so, R49.

by Anonymousreply 53March 4, 2025 1:00 PM

Dump thinks tariffs will encourage “American made” industries in the United States. But who has the money to start a business in a recession? And if the parts you need are expensive from tariffs then you won’t even try. I genuinely think Trump is a simpleton and all of the people around him are sycophants who are leading us to disaster.

by Anonymousreply 54March 4, 2025 2:23 PM

Do you mean a recession? We may already be there. Get ready for supply chain delays and empty shelves. I’m still not sure what they are trying to accomplish unless wrecking the economy and dollar is the goal.
