“Parade” The Musical
My friend goes down true crime and/or unsolved cases rabbit holes (the 2004 Maura Murray case being a big one) and now he’s focused on the 1913 murder of Mary Phagan and the lynching of Leo Frank.
I told him there was a musical and he thought that was weird. Is anybody a fan of “Parade”? Or has at least seen it?

PARADE is a very good musical. I saw the first production directed by Harold Prince with the late (and excellent) Brent Carver as Frank and the wonderful Carolee Carmello as his wife. I liked that production more than many of my friends did.
The recent revival with Ben Platt was smaller scale and many felt it worked better (I didn't see it as I'm not a huge Platt fan).
The score is worth listening to and either cast recording will work. Your friend should know that there are a number of stage musicals that have taken on serious if not grim subject matter.
Also, the mention of Leo Frank on DL will bring out the antisemitic trolls en masse, so get ready.

OP tell him there’s an excellent 1988 2 part movie called The Murder of Mary Phagan starring Jack Lemon as Governor John Slaton and Peter Gallagher as Leo Frank.
I remember thinking it should have been called The Murder of Leo Frank.

R2, uh oh. I had no idea.

R2, the revival was better received, but I thought it paled in comparison to the original in nearly every war. Though it was a nicely prurient touch to start out with The Old Red Hills of Home being sung while the soldier and Lila have sex. Platt was every bit of awful you likely imagined.
Some shows are just ahead of the times and the audiences. What was confusing in 1999 was crystal clear in 2023.

Saw the original and the revival. Enjoyed them both, but I agree that the original cast was better. Still, the revival made a strong impression. It is an excellent musical. For grownups.

The revival was a vehicle for nepo baby poster child Ben Platt, the homeliest of all Broadway stars!

Once they made a musical out of the life of a South American dictator's wife I figured anything goes.

I hope it gets revived again one day or at some regional playhouse. I’d love to see it.

I saw it originally and also a local college production about 10 years ago and liked both of the shows a lot.
Good music.

They made a hugely successful musical (and movie) about gang killings two decades before.
