Daphne Du Maurier novels

I loved Rebecca. (book and movie.)

What other ones do you recommend?

Many years ago, when there were only a handful of audiobooks available (think: cassette tapes), I recall liking listening to [italic]Jamaica Inn[/italic]. Besides, [italic]Rebecca[/italic], I'd say [italic]My Cousin Rachel[/italic] is among her more popular works.

Rebecca sounds like a fascinating story! They should make a movie about it one day.

I adored Frenchman’s Creek.

I love My Cousin Rachel, Jamaica Inn, and The House on the Strand.

I just bought the Rebecca on Audible read by Harriet Walters; even though I've read it numerous times, it's still so intriguing: the narrator - what a dummy! And Mrs. Danver's fawning over Rebecca's underwear (you know she sniffs them) and Frank the odd incel. All so delightfully creepy.

Don’t Look Now (short story collection) and seconding Jamaica Inn.

Try The Scapegoat -- you'll love it. I did.

I enjoyed Jamaica Inn

Another vote for My Cousin Rachel and all of the movie versions.

And The Birds - which is NOT the movie.

by Anonymousreply 11September 22, 2025 3:30 PM

Yet the movie is a CLASSIC. On its own terms…

There's a My Cousin Rachel (1952) movie as well. I have it somewhere. It's with Richard Burton and Olivia DeHavilland.

Just checked! It's on YouTube for free. Check it out! Richard Burton was just a pup.

I remember liking [bold]The House on the Strand[/bold] when I read it ages ago and have been meaning to re-read it again.

I liked The Scapegoat. There’s a movie with Alec Guinness but I’ve never seen it.

The Birds short story? novella? is very good, totally different setting on a farm in England.

I have Olivia Haviland’s biography and it sates after she was cast in My Cousin Rachel she read the book three times, formulated an opinion and then got it confirmed. She refused to say if she was guilty or innocent. This was after Livvie was firmly in her Grande Dame era and said something like, “my performance says it all.” I did not find it so obvious.

I thought this was strange since Du Maurier said even she wasn’t sure about Rachel and her intentions.

The Birds is a short story.

The newest film version of My Cousin Rachel is pretty good but they fucked the ending up badly.

^Have you watched the BBC production of Jamaica Inn with DA Lady. Sybil? It's terrible!

by Anonymousreply 19September 22, 2025 11:48 PM

Definitely "The House on the Strand". A very unique book by Du Maurier.

by Anonymousreply 20September 22, 2025 11:50 PM

"Very unique"?

Oh, dear!

by Anonymousreply 21September 22, 2025 11:54 PM

Most unique! ;)

The House on the Strand is so engrossing. I’ve read it numerous times and am due for a re-read. The ending is haunting.

by Anonymousreply 23September 23, 2025 2:46 AM

I shall have to give HOUSE a try! Thanks, DL.
