Maria Hinojosa, Jimmy Kimmel, John Stewart, and John Oliver are dead to me.

These clowns helped pave the way for the destruction we’re seeing now.

They repeatedly made light of serious topics—normalizing them in the process. When serious issues like political corruption, violence, and discrimination become punchlines, people start to see them as less urgent or even inevitable.

Take Maria Hinojosa and Latino USA as an example.

Weeks before the election, in an attempt to present “fair and balanced” coverage, Latino USA/NPR aired multiple episodes amplifying voices like "Latinos for Trump" and "Latinos Against Harris." What did they think was going to happen?

Within hours of the Republican administration taking office, the Spanish-language section of the White House website was taken down—just like in 2017 when Trump did the same, leaving it offline until Biden restored it in 2021.

I’m beyond frustrated with Hinojosa and Latino USA. I can’t even listen to the show anymore. They gave a platform to people who helped normalize this mess. And as for the so-called “comedians” who made a joke out of it all? They’re just as complicit. Fuck these people.

I agree with you except for Jimmy. He has cried over the state of the country and Dump a few times.

by Anonymousreply 1February 8, 2025 8:19 PM

I can't forgive Jimmy. He was one of the ringleaders. Every night, every monologue - fuck him.

by Anonymousreply 2February 8, 2025 8:21 PM

Quit fucking blaming everybody else for Americans' collective stupidity, OP. Americans knew full well what they were getting when they voted for Trump, but they went ahead and did it anyway because they're fucking idiots who thought a dirtball scumbag like Trump could change his stripes.

by Anonymousreply 3February 8, 2025 8:24 PM

I don't agree. Jimmy Kimmel was & is the most on point late night comic.

Everybody is entitled to an opinion I guess. Have you ever watched his show?

by Anonymousreply 4February 8, 2025 8:25 PM

I used to like Jon Stewart in the late 90s/early 00s, but then over time I saw how smug and phony he is.

by Anonymousreply 5February 8, 2025 8:26 PM

I think Josh Johnson, on the daily show, is a relief from Stewart’s (ever-increasing) histrionics. He has the right balance of irony, somberness and absurdity to deal with these times. Stewart, on the other hand, is getting increasingly unhinged, like Homer during the later episodes of “The Simpsons.” He’s jumped the shark and should retire.

by Anonymousreply 6February 8, 2025 8:35 PM

Yes, OP, blaming the messenger is always so brilliant. 🙄

by Anonymousreply 7February 8, 2025 8:59 PM

Stewart's influence has declined and he's not really keeping up with the times. He can no longer read the room like he used and is danger off becoming Bill Maher. John Oliver is great, not sure what you think he did to help elect Trump

by Anonymousreply 8February 8, 2025 9:03 PM

Hey fuck face R7 - not blaming the messenger. It's the delivery method of the message I'm criticizing. Read the premise of this thread you fucking moron.

by Anonymousreply 9February 8, 2025 11:28 PM

I never respected Jon Stewart for teeheeing that he is just a comedian and not an expert whenever he is challenged.

by Anonymousreply 10August 17, 2025 5:16 PM

John Stewart, John Oliver, and Stephen Colbert are by far the worst.

All self-impressed millionaires being flattered by the hoi polloi.

Gross.

by Anonymousreply 11August 17, 2025 5:39 PM

But I bet the OP watches MSNBC, you know the media platform with actual JOURNALISTS, reporting serious news while adhering to proper media ethics. But no I’’m a tedious cunt, so I must blame entertainment news anchors and late night tv hosts. I won’t take ownership of the fact that I do not understand satire or parody nor do I grasp the complexity around entertainment personalities impact on regular people’s perception of the news. I’ll ignore the fact that most Americans get their news from Facebook. But then again, Facebook simply does not have the influence of Maria Hinojosa. She and John Olliver are huge conversation starters around the buffet dinner table after church.

My name is OP and won’t hold real news like MSNBC or the Wall Street Journal accountable for putting an orange lunatic on a pedestal in 2016. Nor will I hold accountable The NY Times for creating false equivalencies between a sitting president and a wholly unsuitable cunt in 2024. I must blame popular comics and satirical late night hosts. If it weren’t for them, America would have defeated Trumpism. This now makes so much sense Op, thanks.

Love ya OP. You are one brilliant cunt.

I blame Donald Trump on Jon Stewart (and have written about this here before). It was Jon Stewart that encouraged Trump to run for the shits and giggles of it, baited him (and if you don't think Trump watched the Daily Show with the rest of us...), and when push came to shove he gave up and walked away without nary a thought that, at the time, TDS was where young America got its news. He and Colbert put together their stupid rally, and foreshadowing his betrayal of young people, did absolutely nothing with it. At one point, I heard politicians and pundits alike say that if TDS called you and wanted you to come on, it wasn't a request and if you turned them down, you were done in DC. That's how much power Stewart wielded.

And then, six months before the 2016 election (which came down to fewer than 90,000 votes spread across 4 states), Stewart folded his tent and installed an unfunny South African who couldn't translate American politics, and despite the multi-million dollar contract that Comedy Central offered, begging him to stay. Imagine if he'd hung on just through the election, and had been there to poke holes in Trump's campaign, which would have motivated his audience to get to the polls at Stewart's urging... and we would have had Madam President, a secure Supreme Court , COVID would have not happened, and Trump would have retired to Florida when he got tired of New York chasing his crimes.

Comedians always have and always will play an important role in politics, but it's not fun and games. Stewart cracked the code when it came to getting information to young people, and he knew it. It was an awesome responsibility. And he shirked it, blew it, and now wants to pretend that the world doesn't work the way we all know and see it work.

Some of you guys really over estimate the impact of entertainment on American politics. John Stewart would not have defeated Trump. in any type of way relating to his show that is, which produces content about the news for humor. It’s that simple. I will say his personal endorsement might have made an impact. His daily show was broadly popular enough that right wingers watched but not in any substantial way that would could impact electoral politics. Last fall the most popular and influential celebrities on the planet endorsed, supported, rallied behind a woman who raised more than any other candidate in history. Not only did she lose, she lost in an electoral landslide. And yes the candidates may be liberal but their audience isn’t only liberal because they wouldn’t be able to tour and put butts in seats to the extent that they do. Our entertainment just reflects our culture. Legacy media was still going to obsess over any and every Trump move because his deplorable fucking behavior created big rating high clicks. They are the real culprits. Why? Because ratings matter, profits matter. It’s the best possible path however; we can’t be communist with controlled news. In 2016 Trump was tapping into something going on white culture, the new age silent majority. The media or satirical shows like Daily Show weren’t going to change any minds. But legacy news should have engaged in Trumps deplorable behavior with more intellectual vigor rather than mere shock value and lowkey “well she indefinitely going to beat him now after he said this”. Everything was sensationalized because at the end of the day, no matter how many liberal pundits they put on air, they are for profit entities and Trump garnered ratings just like the anchors over at Fake I mean Fix News except they were laughing with Trump not at him. To win ‘m convinced you must have a candidate that inspires people and the people must feel like they chose that candidate.

Social media and traditional campaigning won Trump that election in 2016! Fox News is outright biased. All other traditional media just did what inherently is their design. Report news while attaining high ratings. It inherently benefits a demagogue like Trump.

Trump won in 2016 because of white women. Middle and working white women who voted have gone back and forth between the parties in past elections. Also whole stock of unlikely voters, male or female, in America’s exurbs. But I genuinely mean “white women” not working just class white woken. Trump should have lost because conservative or center right middle class married white women should have defected from him in numbers, based on the moral standard they implored in previous elections. Some “reason” they did not. We all know the reason. My point is these bitches aren’t watching The Daily Show. They heard a narrative repeated over and over on social media, their church, family gatherings. Hell these hoes were ready to cancel Obama a couple months before the 2008 election for some shit he didn’t even say but his pastor said. And then after pundits looked at the exit polls, that’s exactly what the they did. The economy was just so fucked up, their hypocrisy wasn’t enough to overtake all the independents who voted Obama and then all the newly voter turnout from inspired minorities and young people. And John McCain or Mitt Romney are never going to inspired white cunts 30 miles outside Pittsburgh to vote for them. And with John McCain I literally mean never. Liberals are the gatekeepers of the entertainment industry which frankly is preferred by me, conservatives lack taste. But liberal Hollywood and entertainment industry are not a fucking shill for the Democratic Party. And why should they be? Who the fuck wants to live in a world like that. They shouldn’t defecting from the core nature of their art to ensure a Democratic President, which Im arguing anyway is an impossible task. So why would want them to offend the general public with democratic bias. The basic white bitches are just going to tune out, ratings drop, which minimizes the good stories they highlight about social justice or marginalized groups, things than can make some happy go lucky fat frau like in that grocery shopping video thread have empathy and Ben open minded about liberal causes. We should have a candidate who can actually create their own message with their own emotional appeal. Yeah and the electoral college sucks because a woman actually did do that by receiving million 3 votes than Dump. But national popular vote tallies I’m do not decide the presidency and are thus irrelevant because Clinton’s campaign like any presidential campaign from the 2 parties aren’t run on national popular vote. They are run on a handful of swing states and back then the inclusion Florida. Now that Florida is firmly red again, the democrats must win every blue wall state, which we have to contend all the blue walls states are now swing state. I’d actually argue that for the purpose democrats the blue wall states are the only ones that matter if they lose one of those states, you can bet they will lose all the southwest swing states and the state of Georgia because that means the sentiment of anti Dem is so strong if it couldn’t be mitigated in states with legacy democratic voting patterns, it sure isn’t going to be achievable in the US Southwest. Losing any blue wall state means the basic white culture conservative narrative of the democrats as wack jobs has prevailed. It’s not permanent by the way but its there in and losing anyone of those states means the narrative is just going to be stronger in the US Southwest. And there ain’t enough black people in Georgia lol. The basic white white culture has become a disease and the vaccine will be 4 years of hopelessnes and a fucked economy. But I digress back to my main argument—Our electoral politics is too complicated for The Daily Show to have affected that.

Those people did not create mega or Trump. Blame maga and trump for who they are.
