‘English Teacher’ Renewed for Second Season on FX

The comedy from Brian Jordan Alvarez is set to return later this year.

FX will head back to class with English Teacher.

The Disney-owned cable outlet has ordered a second season of English Teacher, a comedy created by and starring Brian Jordan Alvarez. The Austin-set series follows the professional and personal life of Alvarez’s title character. Season two is set to debut later this year.

“English Teacher was one of the most critically acclaimed new shows of 2024 and we are grateful to the producers, writers, cast, directors and crew for the show’s creative excellence,” FX Entertainment president Nick Grad said in a statement. “We look forward to the new season.”

Along with Alvarez, the show also stars Stephanie Koenig, Enrico Colantoni, Sean Patton and Carmen Christopher. Alvarez executive produces with Paul Simms, Jonathan Krisel, Dave King, Kathryn Dean, Jake Bender and Zach Dunn. The show comes from FX Productions.

The renewal for English Teacher comes about two months after allegations of sexual assault against Alvarez by Jon Ebeling, who worked with Alvarez on a web series titled The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo in the mid-2010s. As detailed in a Vulture story, Ebeling alleged Alvarez assaulted him during the filming of the series; Alvarez, through his attorney, denied the claims.

After the Vulture story published, FX said in a statement, “We reviewed the allegations presented to us by another media outlet prior to the show’s launch. Mr. Ebeling never reached out to us with any concerns. We will have no further comment at this time.”

Such a piece of shit show.

by Anonymousreply 1February 7, 2025 6:08 PM

Yes! It was so good and I’d hate to see it cancelled because of some desperate attempts at smearing the writer.

I like aspects of the show, like the female best friend. His grossly unattractive ex-bf needs to be written out early in season 2. I can’t take seeing his shirtless body again.

by Anonymousreply 3February 7, 2025 7:04 PM

Nice plaid shirt !

This makes me happy. Easily one of the best and most realistic gay relationships portrayed on tv. They're even allowed to have sex, unlike most other gay characters.

by Anonymousreply 5February 8, 2025 10:22 AM

R3 That's what makes it realistic though. They're equally attractive. Harry (his alternative love interest) is way out of his league.

by Anonymousreply 6February 8, 2025 10:23 AM

R6 I disagree. I’d say the lead and the new teacher are closer to being in the same league. The lead has a great body. The boyfriend does not at all.

by Anonymousreply 7February 8, 2025 12:41 PM

R2 He literally ADMITTED to it through his dumbass lawyer. He just claimed it was consensual like going down on your costar on set while the camera is rolling is a normal thing.

by Anonymousreply 8February 27, 2025 4:06 PM

So, now it's on FX? I thought it was on HULU??? I don't have HULU.

by Anonymousreply 9February 27, 2025 4:08 PM

Of course DL is defending rape now. How the geriatrics here fancy themselves as better and more civilized than MAGA will never not be funny to me.

by Anonymousreply 10February 27, 2025 4:09 PM

Damn, I am actually surprised the network renewed it given the sexual assault history. Guess we really are in Trump's America lol.

by Anonymousreply 11February 27, 2025 4:13 PM

R11 Exactly. The fucking morons that think shit like this are just isolated incidents that don't affect them frustrate me. If studios feel emboldened enough to openly support rapists, they're certainly brave enough to shun gay actors and erase gay content. Disney is doing that already.

by Anonymousreply 12February 27, 2025 4:24 PM

Remember when FX dropped Louis CK, their biggest award magnet and most profitable cash cow, for much lesser allegations? Good times.

Three new episodes out September 25th on FX, with the remaining seven available the next day on streaming.

Congrats on getting the show cancelled, everyone who got offended he gave that one guy a freebie that one time. We lost an incredibly funny gay-themed show over literally nothing.

I’m sorry but who is the rapist?

by Anonymousreply 15August 26, 2025 12:12 AM

Good to see fugly gay men represented on TV

by Anonymousreply 16August 26, 2025 12:21 AM

Nothing about that show rang true to me as a teacher in Texas. It's a clever concept, though.

"Congrats on getting the show cancelled, everyone who got offended he gave that one guy a freebie that one time. We lost an incredibly funny gay-themed show over literally nothing." I thought you just said it was renewed??!?

by Anonymousreply 18August 26, 2025 12:37 AM

He should be in jail. He’s a psychopath.

by Anonymousreply 19August 26, 2025 12:38 AM

r18 Second season will obviously be its last, seeing how FX is dumping it over the course of two days. First season came out weekly to great critical and audience acclaim, so this can only mean it's been cancelled.

by Anonymousreply 20August 26, 2025 3:52 AM

I do think there’s such a thing as #MeToo overreach but this is not such a case. No one who just up and decides to perform an unsimulated sex act on an actor *while filming a scene* should be running a show.

by Anonymousreply 21August 26, 2025 5:42 AM

This show is so realistic and topically correct.

Another gay minstrel show.

by Anonymousreply 22August 26, 2025 6:26 AM

I watched several of the episodes. There were some funny scenes, but overall, I prefer my humor to be a bit more rooted in real situations - perhaps exaggerated, but still recognizable. If part of the point of the series was to show the main character as lacking in self-awareness, thus bringing bad situations upon himself, it succeeded. But a main character has to show a hint of vulnerability sometime, or we start to lose interest.. As someone in the teaching profession myself, I can't imagine any sort of situation where someone brings his sex life up at every possible public moment.
