Yes it’s bad.

But they are actually doing what countless before them have promised and tried to do and failed. But being smarter people those that failed previously got really hung up on what they were cutting and the support those programs had and even how much good those grants and contracts and programs did.

These guys are not that smart and they don’t give a fuck until things go bad then they restore what they cut. Not being that smart or informed actually helps these guys achieve their aims.

But I bet a lot of federal senior mangers have seen funding for federal grants and contracts and programs they know to be an absolute waste of time and money. So much good done by the federal health folks and so much waste and career building and empire building at the same time.

Damn, EL -- do you work for the Feds? Is your job in danger? Every time I've gone to the VA since the inauguration I ask all the employees I have occasion to speak to if they're worried about keeping their jobs, and they all seem very certain that they won't be touched.

Frankly, to me, it would be easy to privatize many of the VA's medical functions: simply have the VA pay for any medical care veterans get outside the VA, and voila! And BTW, if the health care is pre-approved or considered an emergency, the VA already pays for it. They paid for my 10 days in the hospital after my 2016 MC accident and the next three weeks in a rehab hospital.

Another way to look at this.

We spend millions on anti smoking research and control and elimination each year. Now trying to get a very small % of Americans to quit. ( cdc anti smoking office was just eliminated all 90 people)

Do away with all the govt smoking research and programs thus saving millions billions , we know smoking is bad, already and raise the federal tax on a pack of cigs by $10 then $20 if needed.

You could do similar , punishment not convincing, with other anti social disease causing addictions and activities that cost the US untold billions in research and programs .

Paying for other peoples addictions and fun and high risk activities is not the tax payers most fun activity. Look for more of this punishment or loss of insurance or more costly insurance in the near future. This has just begun,
