Blockbuster trade just announced on ESPN. One of the biggest trades in NBA history.
Luka Doncic is now a LA Laker!

Dallas did not inform Doncic that he was being traded and it wasn't at his request. completely stunning. Dallas fans must be losing their minds.

LeBron James learned of the Davis-Doncic trade after the Knicks game when it broke while he was out to dinner with his family, sources close to James told ESPN. James was surprised by the news, is processing it and had no idea it was in the works, sources said.

I can't even believe it.
How the fuck did we steal one of the top two or three players in the league?
AD has been great when healthy. He's amazing. But he's no Luka.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 2, 2025 5:23 AM |
R7, because we're LA -- one of the two biggest media markets in the country -- and the NBA is always happier when we're winning.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 2, 2025 5:32 AM |
Oh I get what it means to have a robust Lakers for the overall health of the league - especially when it's struggling in the ratings, R8.
But why in the hell did the Mavs trade him? What's the real reason? Because you don't just up and trade a generational player for no reason. And by all accounts this was all initiated by the Mavs.

A bit overwrought, don’t you think, R16?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 2, 2025 6:47 PM |
R17 not really - dallas just traded a 25 year old mvp candidate for an aging injury prone player and a single pick. it's hard to be hyperbolic, there's really never been a trade this insane before. not even one that's close. harden, shaq, kg, or kareem trades don't come close.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 2, 2025 6:52 PM |
Well, R18, to start with, there’s the the deal that sent Babe Ruth to the Yankees. And what did the 76ers get for Wilt & the Bucks for Kareem?

R19 I can’t speak on baseball but the Kareem trade was at least telegraphed. When a star forces their way out, the returns might be pathetic but the actual outcome isn’t shocking. Luka wasn’t asking to leave Dallas lol - even more shocking is that Dallas initiated the trade. They could have gotten probably 5 first round picks AND a star back for Luka. It’s fishy. LePuppet Master strikes again.

R13- if LeBron knew, it would’ve leaked. According to Nico Harrison, he/Nico had been meeting/talking with Rob Pelinka for 3 weeks! They are good at keeping a secret. Anyway, this is good for the NBA because everyone, even Dataloungers, are talking about it now. There will be renewed interest in the NBA especially the February 25th game between Dallas and the Lakers on national TV.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | February 3, 2025 2:18 AM |
R16- it does seem like there’s something we don’t know.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | February 3, 2025 2:20 AM |
R19- those didn’t have the same shock value. No onr knew Luka was on the block, no one knew they wanted AD, the Mavs just went to the Finals last year. It’s has a combination of surprise and mass confusion. Plus, it’s different now with social media,
by Anonymous | reply 33 | February 3, 2025 2:24 AM |
R25- not only that, Dallas could’ve gotten more players. Why weren’tl Reaves and/or Knecht in the deal? Lakers would’ve given them up for Lakers. After all, they gave up Ingram, Hart, Ball, and picks to get AD in the first place.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 3, 2025 2:29 AM |
R28- wouldn’t be surprised if LeBron gets traded before Thursday. L.A. is Luka’s town now.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 3, 2025 2:31 AM |
R28 nobody can dribble for extended periods of time like luka. He makes james harden look like john stockton
by Anonymous | reply 36 | February 3, 2025 2:32 AM |
Dončić is a fantastic player, when he wants to put in the work. But he slacked in training in the this last off season and the Mavs had it with him. He gained a LOT of weight, and is not in his best shape to make a run in the playoffs this year. As the new BMOC in LA, he will likely work hard.
AD was the #1 draft pick (Hornets, then in New Orleans) and was great when he was healthy. But AD is injury prone and has not been at full speed all this season. It seems that in every second consecutive game he plays in he leaves with an injury or an upset tummy. He's 31, which means his career is already nearing completion.
LeBron should have retired by now. He stuck around, coerced the Lakers to draft his undeveloped son, and is a liability to the franchise. He still has sparks of dominance, but he's not the great player today that he was 15 years ago. If he doesn't retire now, he's going to retire with a whimper instead of the adulation of a country of admirer had he gotten out when his game play noticeably declined.
As an Angeleno, I welcome Dončić!

Mavericks fans held a protest outside the arena, leaving behind a bunch of memorials to Luka that were removed right away. I've never seen a reaction like this. They're going to boo the fuck out of their team every game. I saw a mavs fan online saying he was going to drop out of law school because he couldn't enjoy a single second of his life or focus on anything anymore. Nico Harrison is a terrorist.

It's just bullshit excuses, R50. Nico wasn't fond of Luka for unknown reasons and ran off several of Luka's biggest supporters within the franchise over the last couple of years. Nico is a 'legend in his own mind' type combined with not being too bright. He wanted Luka out so here we are.

R10 Beat LA? Lakers will be lucky if they make the playoffs. They are way worse now than they've been with AD. Both Lebron and Luka need to have ball in their hands all the time. And neither of them plays any defense. Who is going to protect the rim now that AD is gone. And Dallas just got a lot better. Got one of the best big man and best defenders in the league. Luka is fat, undisciplined, ball hog, complains all the times to the referees if it doesn't go his way. He can be the face of the franchise for the years to come, but first they need to surround him with a lot of good or solid players. And who knows how long that's going to take. Look how they could make Lakers work with Lebron for how many years now. The rooster changed million times. Every few months they were changing players, and still, they were a mediocre team

As a Lakers fan, I'm still in a state of shock (which I know is not even 1/1000th the amount of shock & dismay that Mavs fans are feeling). Even after watching Luka's Lakers press conference, and seeing Luka on Lakers bench tonight, it doesn't seem real. While the rational adult Laker-fan in me sees the bigger picture (post-LeBron) and knows that I should be happy about this deal...it's still sad to see players that you love, leave. And I loved AD -- and Max! (Max's growth into a solid 3&D has been very gratifying to watch from his first summer league game). I will continue to root for them as individuals & tune into Mavs games when the Lakers aren't playing.
The Luka-aspect of it aside, I just couldn't believe the LeBron-AD era was suddenly OVER. At midnight on a Saturday, first weekend in February, when the Lakers were in 5th place & five games over .500 in the congested/brutal Western Conference. And WITHOUT one of them having a catastrophic season-ending injury (know what I mean?)
As for Mavs-favs.....I sincerely feel bad for them, and understand why they are so distraught & outraged. I would be, too! Luka was THEIR (drafted) superstar, the next Dirk, destined for a statue. The only thing I could liken it to (or try to put myself in their shoes) would be IF the Lakers had ever traded Magic Johnson or Kobe Bryant, in the middle of the night, their 6th year into the league. (Even Kobe wouldn't have been THIS big of a shock, given that everyone knew of the Shaq-tension & that one of them would have to be traded eventually.)
Now, I'm mentally preparing myself for the departure of my guy Austin Reaves. Initially, I was thrilled (and in disbelief) that he was kept out of the Luka-deal, and then I realized, "Uh-oh". I could make an argument for why he *shouldn't* be expendable with the addition of Luka (LeBron's 40, takes time off; Luka's calf-thing)....but he's probably the only real trade piece for a legit (or even halfway passable) center.
For whatever it's worth, Old Man LeBron & my guy Austin just lead the AD-less/Luka-less Lakers to an easy 25-point victory over a full Clippers squad (Kawhi, Harden, Zu, Powell) at the Intuit Dome. They may not totally suck.

R69 actually understands the game. Thanks for that post. I agree with all of it. Especially seeing AD leave. He could be frustrating with his fragility (though he's been great in the regard of late), but he was a joy to watch. His D was as good as it gets.

And then the Lakers overpaid for Charlotte-center, Mark Williams, according to most pundits. Charlotte GM said, "Yes. We'll take Dalton Knecht AND the picks that *should* have gone to Dallas in the Luka-trade, you lucky SOBs"
I suppose (or hope) it all balances out it the end. All I know is that the Lakers/LeBron train keeps on rolling, 11 games over .500. They may not contend for the Western Conference title, but they do not "stink" as Charles Barkley keeps screaming.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | February 8, 2025 4:55 AM |
I am bummed we lost Dalton R76. But we really did need a big and Williams has a ton of potential. I don't think it's a homerun move, but I do think it was a solid double.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | February 8, 2025 5:36 AM |
R77: It's a swing for the fences, to be sure. But that's what we do here in Laker-land, right?! We don't play for bunt-singles.
I am bummed about Dalton, too. FINALLY, the Lakers got a legit three-point sniper, and then they traded him!
But is he REALLY an NBA sniper? He started off like gangbusters, steal-of-the-draft ...but then went glacier-cold for a looooooooooooong stretch in December & January. Dalton couldn't spit into the ocean. I wrote it off to "rookie legs", and other teams getting the memo to defend him. I texted a VOLS-pal about that sudden fall off a cliff. He said, "Oh, yeah, Dalton's very streaky. And when it's bad, it's really, really bad."
As much as JJ Redick may have loved Dalton's shooting stroke ("top 1%") and glazed him.....it seems pretty obvious, now, that he wished Dalton had a little more going on upstairs?? If you don't know what I'm talking about, there's a clip of JJ calling a time-out, storming onto the court, and losing his shit because Dalton didn't know where he was supposed to be on a play that was specifically called/designed for him. And it happened more than once. Not to mention how badly Dalton was getting burned on defense.
Love Dalton's skill-set, but he may not be the *smartest* player?

R84 What are you talking about neither of whom were able to stay on the court much at all? AD is injured all the time, but Luka isn't
by Anonymous | reply 87 | February 8, 2025 3:49 PM |
R84, NBA fans all know Luka sucks at one on one defense. It's not exactly a state secret.
But he makes it up for it by being so insanely good at everything else. What he needs to learn to do is use his size to mitigate his lack of defensive instincts and skills. Be a disrupter in other ways. Which he can totally do.
Curry is also terrible at one on one defense. But he uses his quickness to pester and bother and cause problems, which helps mitigate his overall defensive deficiencies.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | February 8, 2025 5:40 PM |

Wow. Mavs fans got the ENTIRE "Anthony-Davis-Experience" -- going MONSTAR on the other team, then limping off the court with a non-contact injury -- in just two & half quarters.
I do feel bad for AD, but I was surprised that he came back from the abdominal strain so soon. When the original strain happened (pre-trade), I figured the Lakers staff would keep him out through All-Star break in an abundance of caution, as we've been through this before. (not that specific injury, but others).
by Anonymous | reply 96 | February 10, 2025 3:07 AM |
R94: Oh, well. 🤷♂️ As a Lakers fan, I'm just happy that the Lakers medical-staff did their due diligence & we dodged a (possibly) Joel Embiid-sized bullet, given what we were sending to Charlotte.
Poor Dalton Knecht! He's had an insane, rollercoaster week. Surviving the Luka-trade, only to be traded to the TRASH Hornets, a few days later. He went to Charlotte, got all his Hornets togs, sat on the end of the bench (waiting for the trade to be "official"), and then was sent BACK to L.A. I hope some of the vets (who have been traded) can get in his ear & keep his confidence up. Impress upon him that it's "Just NBA business", not personal.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | February 10, 2025 4:49 AM |
R97 totally! Talk about whiplash!
And even though I knew we needed a center, I am a tad thrilled we still have Dalton. I have a feeling he's going to be a Korver type player, but with more hops.

This may be one of funniest things I've ever read. From Mavs owner Patrick Dumont, trying to justify the Luka-trade to the Mavs fan-base:
[quote]“If you look at the greats in the league, the people you and I grew up with — Jordan, Bird, Kobe, Shaq — they worked really hard, everyday with a singular focus to win. And if you don’t have that, it doesn’t work… You shouldn’t be apart of the Dallas Mavericks.”
SHAQ??!! Worked hard, every day, in the off-season??? BWAH! Oh MY SIDES!
This alone tells you this guy knows nothing & is talking out his ass. Shaq was WELL KNOWN to be one of the laziest guys in the league, constantly came into camp fat & out of shape. It was why the Lakers "chose" Kobe over him in the Great Breakup of 2004.

Exceptional players can still compete with extra weight on 'em: Shaq, Barkley, Luka. And being skinny is not a guarantee of good health, just ask poor AD. What a shitshow.

He ended up a top 10-12 player with four rings. Which is incredible, but not for someone with Shaq's unique gifts.

Boston vs LA in the finals is the NBA at its best. This could be the year.

Dirk showed up at the Lakers game to support Luka's debut. Class act.

apparently, the new owners of the Mavericks were desperate to get rid of Luca for some reason.. “The Mavs reached out to the Bucks. But the Bucks made it clear to Mavs they wouldn’t trade Antetokounmpo even though his future with the team is murky. As for the Timberwolves, it’s only logical that any potential deal between the Mavs and Timberwolves would have included Anthony Edwards, their ascending 23-year-old superstar.”

Lakers won't make the finals.

I saw that news, too, R113. I think it is just bullshit postering by the Mavs FO as they have been so heavily criticized for the secretiveness of the deal with LA and the lack of outreach to other teams. I doubt any serious discussions took place. The Mavs really should stop piling on. Every day they keep putting their foot in their mouth.

[quote]not really - dallas just traded a 25 year old mvp candidate for an aging injury prone player and a single pick. it's hard to be hyperbolic, there's really never been a trade this insane before. not even one that's close. harden, shaq, kg, or kareem trades don't come close.
Well not quite.

Just noting for the casuals: Fat Lever was never fat. It's a diminutive for his given name, Lafayette. (bestowed upon him by his younger brother who struggled to say Lafayette when learning to speak)
"Dinner Bell Mel" Turpin & John "Hot Plate" Williams (not to be confused with his contemporary John "Hot Rod" Williams) had the best NBA-fatso nicknames.

R104 AD skinny? What NBA are you watching? Dude hasn't been skinny in his entire life. He is one of the most muscular players in the league. A complete opposite of skinny. So you either don't know who AD is or you don't know the definition of the word skinny.

R106 He would never be even close to a top 3 player. He's the biggest, most dominant player that we ever saw, but he had zero talent. Couldn't hit a free throw if his life depended on it. Can you imagine him today, when centers are some of the best passers and are three point shooters? He's lucky he played in the generation that he played in

R111 How exactly are Lakers passing Oklahoma, or even Houston, Denver or Memphis with no defence?

I'd almost forgotten about this bit of Shaq off-season fuckery:
During the latter part of the 2001-02 season, Shaq dealt with nagging big-toe pain (bone spurs) which was going to require off-season surgery to remedy. He spent the entire summer farting around (attending to his "other obligations" as he referred to them), and put-off the surgery until two weeks before the start of training camp. As a result, he missed the first 12 games of the regular season, during which the Lakers went a woeful 3-9.
Shaq justified that by saying that since it was a "work-injury", it should be dealt with on "company time" -- not during his free time. Lakers were paying him $23.5 million/year.

I don't know, R125. The Lakers they've had the best defensive rating in the NBA over their past 15 games...best 10 since the AD trade. I wouldn't have believed it either, but here we are. 🤷♂️

"Hookah Doncic" is too funny. (Especially based on basically one photo from a few years ago?). But this really had me dying-laughing this morning. Made me think of Riley trademarking Three-Peat.

by Anonymous | reply 141 | February 27, 2025 10:59 PM |
Luka has been playing shitty (for him). But he really just opens up the entire court. He makes life SO much easier for Lebron, that's for sure.
Once he gets his legs under him and can hit the three? Lakers are going to be a tough out come spring.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | February 28, 2025 6:01 PM |
[quote] Lakers will be lucky if they make the playoffs. They are way worse now than they've been with AD. Both Lebron and Luka need to have ball in their hands all the time. And neither of them plays any defense.
These proclamations aren't aging very well, are they, R65??
The Lakers have won 16 of their last 18 games (dating back to before the trade, when AD wasn't playing). They are now in 2nd place in the Western Conference standings (by a few % points), with 23 games left to play.
Math isn't my strong suit, but....even if they only went .500 over the final stretch, it seems pretty unlikely that the Lakers will fall below 6th place, into the play-in? (because all the teams bunched around/behind them have games against each other).
And you couldn't have been MORE WRONG about Luka & LeBron's ability to play together. There's no solution when they're on the court together (and then throw Austin Reaves into the mix). They are just picking defenses apart! It's a beautiful thing.

R143, Bron's statement that he's a natural wide receiver and Luka's a natural QB could not be more apt.
Even with Luka being spotty on shooting, seeing him and Bron play together has been magical.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | March 3, 2025 11:03 PM |
R142/R4144, have you seen this guy's "Awful Coaching" channel?? I stumbled across it a couple months ago & died laughing at the insane video-titles and his screaming shtick. "Steve Kerr is the reason there is world hunger!"
He's also very knowledgeable with his breakdowns. His videos about LeBron & Luka, and how they are torching everyone together, are great.

[QUOTE][R143], Bron's statement that he's a natural wide receiver and Luka's a natural QB could not be more apt.
Can there be a more motivational point to a young player than having the sort of LeBron compliment him? Luka could use the opportunity to make Lakers' fans love him as they did Pau Gasol, another European with questionable fitness, yet who with Kobe helped transform him onto an icon
