I liked Nasty Girl by Vanity 6. Vanity was so beautiful. Apollonia was beautiful too, but wasn't much of a singer. I thought it was rumored that Vanity (God rest her) was HIV+. Prince liked 'em dumb, huh?

I love Apollonia! I like her 1988 solo album with songs like Since I Fell For You, Synchronize, Mismatch, etc more than Apollonia 6 album though Blue Limousine is a heart fave.

Apollonia had a great podcast a year or two ago. Not sure if it’s still updated or not. Episodes can be found on YouTube. She interviews Prince associates.

Neither is/was a great singer, but Appolonia had the better voice IMO.

Both women.....gorgeous! I had the Vanity track, "Under the Influence" as a 12-inch, single. As to Apollonia: I recall during her run on, "Falcon Crest" , Jane Wyman's character of Angela Channing, refered to her, as "Babilonia". Good times!

I liked Vanity more, she was a better singer and actress. I liked her in Action Jackson and 52 Pick Up.

I felt sorry for her when she went on a daytime talk show (I forget which one) and showed her artwork. It was a big blob of fake pearls and jewels glued together with a peephole that had someone's picture inside.

She was so proud to unveil that monstrosity and when she did the crowd went silent, even the hosts were speechless. When Vanity was explaining what it was and the materials she used her voice was shaking, like she was about to cry.

That was during the period when she was dating Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue. He said in the book The Dirt that she was freebasing.

Poor thing.

At least Rick James was better at picking women who could truly sing (with Teena Marie, he got someone who not only could sing her ass off but could play multiple instruments, write and produce her own material).

Prince never seemed interested in backing great female vocalists other than Rosie Gaines, and he did very little with her. He was only into hot women who he can fuck with minimal talent.

R16 Neither were incredible singers. In fact, it would be a stretch to label them as "singers." "Performers" would be the more appropriate way to describe them.

Overall, I think Vanity had a slightly better voice, and she was a much better actress. My favorite song of hers was "Pretty Mess," and the video is hilariously 80s with it's not-so-subtle interpretation of a song about a woman getting cum all over her.

She looks beautiful in the video, and she as appropriately wild 80s hair. Her voice is somewhat thin and squeaky, but she could carry a tune better than Apollonia.

BIG fan of both ladies since the '80s. Many people in the Purple family hate on Apollonia for various reasons (she's a liar, she was a low-rent Vanity, etc.), but I've always loved her, and she was just fine in Purple Rain even though the role was meant for Vanity. "Nasty Girl" will still get the entire club on the floor, and there was no denying V's magnetism.

Meanwhile Wendy and Lisa, both mega-talented musicians, still get labeled as Prince's "protégés."

Both women had their vocals punched up by Jill Jones who was underage and could not be in the groups. All the songs were written by Prince, just like the Time. I would say of the two albums Vnaity 6 had the better songs. He's so Dull, Nasty Gril, If a girl answers. Sex Shooter - which was featured in Purple Rain was actually recorded by Vanity 6 first.

Jill Jones is the real deal! And she's underappreciated.

Vanity was not an incredible singer, but she had presence and charisma. That Vanity 6 album is a total hoot — funny, hooky, funky. Her solo albums are worth listening to too.

Jill is great. I love her brash, take-no-shit personality. She started off singing backup for Teena Marie and was featured prominently on the 1999 album and its videos. Some of her scenes in PURPLE RAIN were also cut. She admitted during her interview on Apollonia’s podcast that she slept with PR director Albert Magnoli just to make Prince jealous, and Apollonia admitted that she thought Albert was hot too (he was).

I loved her Marilyn Monroe-esque look back then. Some would be shocked to know that she’s actually black!

Many things and people Prince touched died (and not just literally).

I loved Jill's Fellini-inspired video for her debut single, the wonderful, Prince-penned Mia Bocca. There's a rumor that Apollonia co-wrote it with Prince, but I'm not sure. Jill is definitely one of the better protege singers.
