The entire series should stand as a tribute to David Lynch, taking a cue from the beloved (by DL) episode Sylvia from the original run.

Season one involves a mystery which unravels to show that Nels Oleson is the biological father of all the children in Walnut Grove.
It would be nice to address more adult storylines. Start with a rename: The Best Little House On the Prairie.

Jesus fuck, people, can we be serious for a minute?
It would be amazing if the new series was more faithful to the books. The show that aired years ago was complete crap and full of fabrications and drama for tv ratings.
Yes, I know the point of tv is drama and excitement and yes, I faithfully watched every episode until the end, but I knew as I watched that it was nothing like the books.

Never read the books or followed the show so I have no idea what to expect. All three of my sisters read the books and the youngest watched the show with our dad when he retired. And he watched only M*A*S*H, Little House, and anything news related. I was in my teens when the show aired so to me IT SUCKED. I saw it as similar to The Waltons and by then I'd had my fill of them.
Now I'm around the age or older that my father was when he watched it. Maybe I should give it a try. My sisters read the books at elementary school age. I was steered toward the boys' books. Are they kids' books?
R15, I am mostly asking you. Could a viable series work by being faithful the the original story?

R24, the books go into great detail about how the family all nearly died from malaria and how they were saved by a Black doctor.

Who knew the original Pa Ingalls was an actor of color!
by Anonymous | reply 46 | January 30, 2025 1:06 AM |
Yes, R18, absolutely!!
I would love to hear the cracking of the solid ice of the mighty Mississippi River when the young family was crossing it during an early spring when they left their house in the woods.
I would love to ride along with the family in the covered wagon as they made their way west. When the native Americans were holding their pow-wows near the cabin Pa had built on the massive prairie. The little brown Indian baby that Laura had wanted so desperately to keep even though he had a mother.
The little sod house where they lived on Plum Creek.
Would love to see the Wilders’ well-run, prosperous farm.
That long hard winter where many people gave up and moved back east.
Would live to meet the real Mr Edward’s, the thin, lanky fellow instead of the tubby actor from the show.
There are many, many adventures and obviously years they could go through.
The books are really an easy read. They’re not necessarily for little girls or little kids. You would probably get thru them fairly quickly. They are very, very descriptive. I like where Laura says that the reason she was describing things in her life as well as she did was because she would always describe everything to Mary. She made everything come alive.
I think I might read the books again, I do own them all. 😬

Adjusted for the 2025 audience...
Pa heroically thwarts Liberal Elite Harriet Olson's 'woke' plan to provide relief to the poor. Miss Beadle must intervene when a boy in her class claims to be a girl and assaults other girls despite the objections of 'woke' Harriet Olson. Reverend Aldin humiliates 'woke' Harriet Olson by quoting the Bible when Harriet Olson argues that 'homosexuals' can marry. Harriet Olson, humiliated and without the comfort only a TRUE christian faith can provide, kills herself. Little liberal snowflake Nellie Olson vows revenge...starting with Laura Ingalls (who has God on her side)!!
by Anonymous | reply 52 | January 30, 2025 1:47 AM |
^ If it pisses off Megyn they should make it as woke as possible
by Anonymous | reply 54 | January 30, 2025 1:58 AM |
Pa becomes a follower of a disheveled carnival barker who spews insults about Indians saying they’re rapists and not the finest people. The carnival barker has bankrupted many towns along his destructive path, but despite knowing this, and knowing the carnival barker is a pathological lying rapist, more and more townspeople start joining Pa as followers as their lust for anger and grievance fill their increasingly empty souls. Pa kicks disabled Mary out of the Little House due to the shame of having a defective daughter. She’s raped and killed by an unknown clown. Laura meets Almanzo, a pedo who is 23 to her 13, starts following as well to no one’s surprise. He soon radicalizes her. Squaw LaughsALot comes to town to try and reason with the townsfolk. She offers them all kinds of policies which will make their lives infinitely better, and to turn away from the darkness and hate, but she is shockingly scalped by Half Pint who disturbingly runs around town wearing the scalp with blood running down her face laughing hysterically.

Mary made the best out of her situation. Laura helped pay the bills when Mary went to a school for the blind.

No beard and some dumb actor with a perm and fake tan. Walnut Grove was the stupidest "town"...its layout made no sense. And, don't get me started on those mountains...in southern Minnesota.

A great read about the real version is ‘Prairie Fires: The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder’ by Caroline Fraser. It won awarded the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Biography. It frames Laura’s life in the historical context of the day and is fascinating and even handed. My main take-aways: Pa was a dreamer and loser and ultimately poor provider who constantly uprooted, endangered and beggared his family. In retrospect, they should have stayed in the Big Woods is Wisconsin in the beautiful Driftless area instead of ending up in the godforsaken Dakota Territory. Laura wasn’t always a particularly kind person and had a complicated relationship with her daughter Rose. Rose and her parents were big Libertarians. It was interesting to see some of the historical roots of that way of thinking. They would all likely be MAGA today especially living in the Missouri sundown town they ended up in

Mary Ingalls is now transgender (born Marcus). Mary falls in love with a 2-Spirit Ojibway and they "marry" but tragedy strikes after the couple is attacked by a posse of fat white bigots. Mary goes blind and bitter and exhausted from explaining things to those less informed. She writes a best selling memoir in Braille and moves to Manhattan where she becomes the toast of the town for a season before losing all her money and fancy friends. She ends up turning tricks as "Blindass Bitch Mary" on the Bowery before dying of the lumbago.

In the books, the Doctor who saved the lives of the Ingalls family when they contracted malaria was black.
So probably yes?

Everyone thought Caroline married beneath her and they were right. Charles was a loser who subjected his family to poverty, disease, and isolation. Carrie suffered lifelong consequences because of malnutrition.

Laura was almost sold into prostitution! In Iowa, when the family was at their lowest point, a well dressed woman offered to take Laura in and put her to work. Ma was no fool and she told the lady to fuck off.

It's interesting that this is happening now.
We're three years away from the Ingalls family going into public domain. The first book in the series, "Little House in the Big Woods" was published in 1932.
Soon, ANYONE can do anything they want with the Little House characters.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | January 31, 2025 8:58 PM |
Did Michael Landon buy the rights to all the books? Because it would be funny if other networks had snatched up the others and he suddenly had to compete with Little House in the Big Woods, Little House on the Banks of Plum Creek, etc. [bold]: o

I already did that with those characters
by Anonymous | reply 131 | January 31, 2025 9:22 PM |
Well, didn’t they pretty much HAVE to invent storylines for the show? If they stuck to the books it would mostly be butchering hogs, making maple candy from syrup in the snow, going to a dance at an aunt’s house…. these aren’t extended, dramatic events.

I Adore the original. When Aloson Arngrim engaged in chat with me on FB it was so special.. shes great. So many of the original cast brought more to their roles than was on the page. They Have to be loyal to the original show, sets, casting, vibe. I loved how they found lokalikes for the Brady movies...that worked. I think the time is right for this, we need more love and positively..this is even obvious in how realitet shows arent going for drama and spiteful chatacters anymore...the public is over it. Melissa G, and Anderson, and Alison Arngrim Have to be involved somehow...pleeeeease.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | January 31, 2025 9:58 PM |
They had to invent storylines for the show because they didn't bother to follow the books. The Ingalls were only in Walnut Grove for a short period of time. The Little House on the Priairie book and the pilot movie were about their year in southern Kansas. The next book in the series, On The Banks of Plum Creek covers their time near Walnut Grove. Really, they should have continued the tv show with the book series and moved them along to South Dakota/DeSmet.

R129 Landon was too cheap to buy the rights to all the books. I recall he only bought the rights to the first book & b.s.ed his way through a decade's worth of episodes which is how we got Adam, Albert & Mary's baby. In real life, Mary was never that independent & was to be cared for at home.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | February 1, 2025 12:51 AM |
After Pa died Laura never saw Mary or Ma again. Carrie was the only relative she invited to Rocky Ridge farm in Mansfield, MO. Real life Laura seems like a cunt.

Rose traveled all over the world but never went back to South Dakota. Laura took an extended trip to California. They traveled but clearly had no desire to see the Ingalls family again.

If you follow the LHOTP subreddits and FB groups, so many are still traumatised by Sylvia and that clown. A close second is the cringeworthy episode that featured Carrie and her godsister Alyssa. Third would be Alice Garvey using Mary’s baby as a battering ram whilst the blond school was consumed with fire.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | February 1, 2025 8:10 AM |
*blind not blond
by Anonymous | reply 146 | February 1, 2025 8:12 AM |
Landon was one of the producers on LHOTP but the main producer was Ed Friendly and their production company is involved with this new show, too. Friendly had the rights, not Landon. And, no, it wasn't for one book. The pilot movie was actually based on the book named Little House on the Prairie. The series was originally based on characters and situations from the next book, On The Banks of Plum Creek, covering their time living in Minnesota. But, there are elements from later books that show up, with the main one being Almanzo Wilder. They also added some real life Ingalls family stuff. And, obviously, just made up some crazy ass shit like the scary clown and the blind school fire. And, Mary getting married. And, Pa's idiotic perm hairdo and thick layer of makeup.

That "swarth" came out of a spray gun.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | February 1, 2025 8:11 PM |
I always thought it would be cool if the actors who played Almanzo and Laura would reprise their roles as middle aged/elderly. When Laura was writing her books and living at Rocky Ridge farm and Rose would help her write them. I wonder who would make a good Rose as a woman approaching middle age?
by Anonymous | reply 151 | February 1, 2025 8:25 PM |
Melissa Gilbert is now the right age for them to do a movie about Laura's writing career and complicated relationship with Rose.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | February 1, 2025 8:31 PM |
They should cast Melissa Gilbert as the little old troll like woman who lives in the woods. They drag her out to try her as a witch and Rob Lowe shows up at the end to save her.

by Anonymous | reply 154 | February 1, 2025 8:56 PM |
Michael Landon = Eugene Maurice Orowitz, tiny Jewish bed wetter from Forest Hills.
by Anonymous | reply 155 | February 1, 2025 9:00 PM |
R147 I think it was Alison who mentioned in an interview that Landon didn't buy all the rights to the entire series & just wanted to do his own spin from the first couple of books = Albert's debut, Mary's independence, marriage to Adam & Mary's baby.
by Anonymous | reply 156 | February 2, 2025 3:01 AM |
R156 Again, Landon didn't buy the rights; Ed Friendly did. He was the original producer and Landon came on later. Eventually, Friendly and Landon fell out and Friendly left as an active on set producer but he still owned it. And, the Friendly family apparently still owns some rights because Ed Friendly's son is part of the new Netflix project.

Pa Ingalls was a dirt poor 19th century pioneer farmer but Michael Landon as Pa Ingalls was a permed, styled, blow-dried and spary-tanned 1970s Southern California guy. He looked like he should've been on his way to a swingers' party in the Hollywood Hills, instead of shoveling pig shit in a barn on the prairie.

The black doctor is accurate but he was just around for a very short time.
by Anonymous | reply 175 | May 30, 2025 2:34 AM |
I guess the writers aren't aware of Ma's virulent anti-Indian racism.
I would have liked to see the first few episodes cover Little House in the Big Woods as the origin story, then they could cover the trek out west and Pa's building of the house in Kansas, the fever 'n' ague, etc. The whole prairie story.
by Anonymous | reply 176 | May 30, 2025 2:58 AM |
The Olesons made the show in the same way Will and Grace were overshadowed by Jack and Karen. Pa was a loser and poor provider. His main assets were hair, bronzed and waxed chest, and fiddle playing’. . Ma should have dumped him for Gil Gerard’s handyman character on that one episode.
by Anonymous | reply 177 | May 30, 2025 11:03 AM |
Yeah I always felt pa was a loser. And he cried like a bitch.
by Anonymous | reply 178 | May 30, 2025 2:06 PM |
Well, looking back on the whole, real saga, it does turn out that Pa was a significant failure at many things he did. He wasn’t a good farmer (Mother Nature had a big part to play of course) but it seemed they weee always struggling to get by.
They should have never left Wisconsin.
It really does take a village, especially in those early days of frontier life. He couldn’t do it all. Three little girls couldn’t cut it.
Not to kick a man while he’s down but he couldn’t even produce boys. 🫤
by Anonymous | reply 179 | May 30, 2025 7:08 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 180 | May 30, 2025 10:59 PM |
They originally moved away from Wisconsin, their cozy house, and Caroline's (I believe) extended family, because Charles started hearing other peoples' guns in the Big Woods from a distance. He thought that was too close for the rugged, isolated life he wanted.

My favorite book out there that examines the family within their historical context is ‘Prairie Fires: The Life and Times of Laura Ingalls Wilder’ by Caroline Fraser. It also delves into the life of Laura’s daughter Rose, and there’s a lot of Libertarian leanings shared by the entire family. If I recall, Pa moved his family at least nine times after the Big Woods in Pepin, Wisconsin (in the gorgeous Driftless unglaciated region) before ended up in God-forsaken DeSmet, South Dakota where most of the family is now buried. He really was a loser and did many unscrupulous things including making false land claims, trying to illegally settle in Indian lands, and running off in the middle of the night to escape debts when living in Iowa. Laura and Almonzo continued the trek experience moving around before settling in a racist Sundown town in Missouri. They even made a brief weird move to the panhandle of Florida. There were many scammy development schemes back then to advertise people to move to shit places. This family seemed to be easily conned to up roots and move constantly. They’d all certainly be hardcore MAGA today based on their political and social beliefs. All the media portrayals sugarcoat the hard edges and bleakness and awkward social mores. Even Laura’s original books are toned down versus the likely reality.
by Anonymous | reply 186 | May 31, 2025 10:23 AM |
Well, it seems the sugar-coating will continue, R186.
It’s gonna be some rainbow-connection propaganda shit show.
I actually asked a great-great nephew or something of Laura that has an insta account if he could tell me if the new series was gonna be more loyal to the books but he just liked my comment. 🫤
