I’m so old that I remember when Rick and z Monica were having their hot affair in some shack on the pier . They did a location piece with super handsome Stuart Damon stalked them with a gun. I don’t remember - it couldn’t have been an earthquake - didn’t some accident stop him from shooting them?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 23, 2025 11:12 PM |
R9, I had a friend in high school who watched GH at that time... I remember when Alan was going to murder Rick and Monica by having the ceiling of the nursery in Quatermaine mansion collapse on them. I think he was doing that because Alan suspected that the baby his wife Monica has was really Rick's child.
It's all very fuzzy, it was in the 1900s.

Alan and Monica hated each other so much sometimes. They were not quite ever each other's true love. One was always fucking around on the other.

I guess Van sucking Frank’s dick got him a job. Van Hansis is a terrible recast. Where is Ryan???
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 24, 2025 9:00 PM |
Van's version of Lucas isn't going to get anyone invested in any story lines he's involved in or create any kind of buzz. He can't lead story lines and he's not very doctor-y. For example, Sawandi Wilson (Isaiah) is doctor-y.
If Frank was hellbent on hiring Van, why didn't he make him Lucas' boyfriend or husband he comes back to town with and makes Brad jealous and vindictive in response.
I can't imagine that Ryan Carnes wasn't open to recurring. He did his duty and came back for Jackie's tribute episode. As someone mentioned in a previous thread, Ryan could say more with one look as he did when he turned around to look at BJ after she said "champ" to him. Why is Frank so stunad?
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 24, 2025 9:24 PM |
The only thing worse than Frank hiring Van......is that Frank will dig in and not admit his mistake, and try to make viewers accept Van as Lucas, just as he's done with Cam Mathison as Drew.

[quote] How was Justin Bruening able to achieve more primetime success when his wife and Jacob Young were much better actors?
Assuming this is a fair and accurate assessment, in the case of Jacob Young it was overexposure on daytime.

I wonder if they'll have Monica die on screen sooner, or later?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 24, 2025 10:24 PM |
I have nothing to base this on but his salty exit interview from B&B but did Jacob have a bit of an attitude? Difficult to work with? Did he get along with his fellow GH co-stars (Coltin aside)?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 24, 2025 10:25 PM |
Jacob Young starred on three different soaps over the course of 15+ years, where his character was front burner almost the entire time. In his personal life during those same 15+ years, he came out of the closet, got heavily involved with a male co-star and then went back in the closet and got married to a woman (likely after being warned about being too out).
When he returned to B&B, Brad Bell then had his character fall in love with a transgender woman. After the initial storyline wore itself out, there wasn't much you could do with the characters. So Brad wrote them off
And since then Jacob has been lying low. Not making much of a blip on the radar.

If I remember correctly, Monica went into labor someplace deserted (no idea where) with no power and Leslie Webber had to deliver the baby.
Then during labor, Monica gasps (to Leslie, who happens to be Rick's wife) "it's Rick's baby!" but as it happened, it wasn't. I didn't see the episode but I heard Leslie Charleson say in some interview later "that damned birthmark!" which was a Quartermaine birthmark, so it was Alan's baby all along.
(Why I remember this I have no idea. I can't even remember if I got the cat food Amazon claims it delivered on Wednesday.)

R21 Jacob Young never really tested the waters outside of soaps, except for his pre-B&B days, when he was still a teen. He began his career at B&B when he was 18, landed on GH at 20, then went straight from GH to AMC at 24, staying there until the shows ending when he was 32, then headed back to B&B at 32 until they wrote him off when he was 38/39. He's now seeking opportunities outside of soaps, though he's also now 45. Justin Bruening actually could've been even bigger, for he was up for Superman against Brandon Routh.

R29 He was somewhat arrogant when he first started out on B&B and on GH; to his credit, Tony Geary wasn't exactly welcoming to him, for he was still upset that Lucky was recast; Tony felt that Lucky was only for Jonathan, so if he wasn't willing to come back, then Lucky should've stayed deceased. Tony also believed Jacob wasn't a good enough actor.

What is Frankie V.'s beef with Genie? Her dislike for the Laura as Heather's cheerleader story line? If so, I'm with Genie on that one. Awful, awful story line. Laura should have been advocating to get her son Nik released from prison or a reduced sentence, not Heather.
Or is it more than the disagreement on that story line?
I know Genie is beloved here and I do have nostalgic feelings regarding her character but in general, I don't get a warm and fuzzy feeling from GF. JMO.

R69 Frank's beef with Genie is mainly the same one he has with Nancy Lee; he doesn't like "outspoken" actresses who usurp his authority. Finola tried to as well and was yelled at then subsequently suspended by Frank years ago, though she has apparently since became more "willing" to accept the writing, no matter how out of character it sometimes seems. Yes, the Heather Webber storyline wasn't exactly what Genie wanted and she made no secret about that, so Frank "allegedly" scaled back her involvement in Lulu's return story, out of spite. You're also right about Genie not exactly being "warm and fuzzy" at times; Patrick Mulcahey didn't particularly care for her either, though as you also referenced, there are many cast members who admire and adore her, that are very close to her.

R37, Monica gave birth in the Quartermaine house, well, her house.
Lesley and Gail went to visit a bedridden. Monica. A blizzard hit. Monica went into labor and blurted out what she believed to be the truth when Gail and Stella the maid were boiling hot water and getting fresh towels.
Later, at the hospital, Lesley is exhausted. Edward is thanking her profusely. Tracy is staring at Lesley, suspecting it's not just exhaustion that has her looking do spent.
Brilliant stuff.

[quote]Frank loves Jane, though Genie....not so much
None of the EPs liked Genie except Gloria, and that was probably because Gloria kept her too coked up for her to be a problem. But it's no big secret that Genie has spent almost her entire career on GH complaining. I can understand why she and Wendy Riche had issues, Wendy did call her fat. Genie's main problem is that she thought she never got the same respect that Tony got and has taken it out on the show ever since. Welcome to show biz, Genie.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | January 26, 2025 3:34 PM |
R55 Yes and yes. She was 30+ when she left GL and Linda Bloodworth-Thomason wanted her for Evening Shade, but CBS wanted a bigger name, and thus we got Marilu Henner.

R75 I've mentioned that book (I have it) and that essay here and several posters insisted I had to be making it all up 😆 Glad to see that it was mentioned elsewhere in the soap press.

R77 Finola deserves more than what she's given, but she's a trooper. She had issues with the way Anna and Duke were written, during Ian's return; Anna was supposed to sleep with Julian after Duke's death, which Finola thought was against Anna and Duke.
All the actors you mentioned are fan favorites, btw
by Anonymous | reply 83 | January 26, 2025 5:08 PM |
R78 Right 😊 Genie and Wendy definitely clashed; in Genie's defense, Wendy, who has a Joy Behar effect to her in the sense that they're ageless, had issues with others as well, including Sarah Brown and Bob Guza. Jill, of course, was team Tony over Genie, for she had problems with women over 40, unless they were one of her favorites.

Recap of Finn Carr (Rocco) on Mo's show:
Mo opened with how he loves young actors, he helps young actors so much, he has ten Emmys, three of his own and seven he shares with all the young actors he's helped but he doesn't want to brag.
He hasn't helped any young actors lately because he hasn't found any he likes (take that NAC!) but he has found one he likes in Finn. He says he is also helping Sawandi (WTF??) who he likes. Thirty-eight-year old, talented and experienced Sawandi doesn't need Mo's sputtering help. Kudos to Sawandi for showing restraint and not telling Mo to kick rocks.
He introduced sixteen year old Finn by saying he plays Dante's son, "Dante the only actor shorter than I am on GH". I'm sure DZ appreciated that. Finn tells Mo he has a "gorgeous" voice.
Finn's first job as a 4 year old was on Hot In Cleveland. They discussed the pros and cons of self tapes to audition.
During COVID, Finn said he had "seasonal depression" for four or five months. He didn't like the idea of Zoom therapy, would have preferred in person therapy. Swimming in cold water helped Finn with his depression. He also suffers from anxiety and panic attacks, had to come home from school because of panic attacks when he was younger. Finn said he would tell people he was "just tired" when he was depressed, he asked Mo if he ever said he was "tired" to cover up, Mo went off on a tangent about his nervous breakdowns and mental institution stay. Finn said he is hesitant to discuss his depression and ask for help but is more open about discussing and asking for help for anxiety. He has never taken medication.
Mo asked Finn who Rocco's mom is on GH. He seriously didn't know. Then after Finn said "Lulu" he asked if Kelly Monaco was his mom. WTF, he just answered the question. Finn clarified Kelly was stepmom figure. Mo says he doesn't want to work "hard" any more, he wants to work "easy". It's obvious Mo, very obvious!
Mo explained to Finn about the Actor's Studio and Method Acting. Mo got into the Actor's Studio the first time he auditioned. Mo said he will teach Finn method acting some day. Finn says he's more a Meisner type actor as he's young and doesn't have a lot of life experience to draw on.
Mo wrapped up with commending Finn for getting through five months of depression and how his sharing his experience might help other young people watching.

I'm rather disturbed that ABC allows Sonny to kill a federal agent in cold blood and there be no accountability. Does ABC really intend to signal that they condone vigilante "justice" because they perceive the fictional character of Sonny to be a source of General Hospital's profit-making? That's a very sad statement, if true. Most of his criminal empire is unseen, but surely it's not without victims (otherwise, it woudn't be criminal).

Who does he think he is? Julian Fellowes? Julian who killed off Downton Abbey's Matthew Crawley on Christmas much to the horror of Brits.

I just don't understand how anyone can take Maurice's "mentoring" seriously. If I were a young actor, I would look at Maurice's career as everything that I don't want. Soap work beats waiting tables and is not a bad place to get your career started, but no young actor wants to get trapped in soaps.

Frank Valentini has taken all that was wrong with OLTL and transplanted it to GH. In it's last year, OLTL was based on endless scenes of conflict, logical, illogical, anticipated, unanticipated...the characters were moved around like chess pieces just to create endless scenes of conflict. GH is now doing the same thing, with an added dose of violence (the shootings, the IV killings, the fires). Everything is focused on immediate events, whereas real good soaps are based on built-up tensions, character-driven stories, and unexpected surprises. Must everyone's parenthood be a surprise (Cody, Sasha, Giolin...)? I guess it keeps Brad busy in the lab testing all that DNA! Don't get me wrong -- I loved OLTL, but I didn't like what it deteriorated into in its last years and now the same has happened at GH.

Gio is at Sundance promoting a movie in competition and NAC is at Paris Fashion Week rubbing elbows with Anna Wintour. Mo is, as always, just jealous, and Finn, who is talented, should avoid his “mentorship” at all costs.

Didn't Frons and Pratt mandate the switch to story driven rather than character driven? That was indeed the beginning of the end.
With the exceptions of Erica Kane and Vicki Buchanan, characters became unrecognizable and inconsistent. There was no longer a need for a "bible" outlining the characters personalities and long term story lines. It was anything goes and instant gratification.

R119 That's true about Frons and Pratt; at AMC, the actors were not exactly thrilled with the changes. When Pratt decided to have Lucci do double duty as Erica and Jane Campbell, many fans were dissatisfied with that particular storyline. Lucci was also critiqued, for many cited her apparent inability to successfully portray two different characters.

Pratt gave Jack an evil doppelganger named Marco on Y&R.

by Anonymous | reply 148 | January 27, 2025 2:31 AM |
Frank may have issues with Genie and her outspokenness, but he has hired her back on multiple occasions, beginning in 2013. Each time he brought Genie back, he brought her back with the purpose of keeping her around ; the only exception being when Genie came back for a short gig for Tony Geary's farewell storyline. Frank recognizes Genie's importance to the show, to its history and that she is a fan favorite.
Contrast that with JFP and Guza who only had Genie back twice for short stints after getting rid of her in 2002.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | January 27, 2025 2:34 AM |
If it wasn't for Genie's complaining, neither Lucky nor Lulu would be back on canvas. Instead, we'd probably have Heather living with Laura and Kevin so she could be close to her grandson Ace.

r133 Actually, Lorainne Broderick came in to write the final three months of AMC on ABC, July-September 2011. She took over as HW from David Kreizman and Donna Swajeski, who had written the previous year,
You're right about Kreizman and Swajeski helping put soaps out to pasture. They helped write GL into the ground, then moved over to ATWT for its final year, then moved to AMC for its final year.

I give Genie a pass. As a teen, they asked her to play a rape storyline that wasn't really rape? WTF? That would mess with anyone's head.
There were reports of drug use and Tony got all the glory.
When Luke made his December 1978 debut, GH was already a solid No. 2 in the ratings.
That was a direct result of Douglas Marland's stories -- the Lesley/Rick/Monica/Alan quadrangle, the Lassa fever epidemic, new characters Tracy Quartermaine, Bobbie Spencer; he also kept vets relevant. Jessie was Bobbie's roommate. Steve was Dr. Jeff Webber's father.
Lesley taking the wrap for Laura killing David Hamilton drew in the young audience. Most kids are lucky to get 'don't slam the screen door!' Lesley went to JAIL to protect Laura.

My first thought when actors complain about what they've been subjected to as actors is: "Was someone holding a gun to your head forcing you to be an actor? No? Then go be an accountant, nurse, etc. if it's so awful".
Why was Genie putting herself through such hardship as a teenager? Was she supporting her family? I do feel sorry for the kid actors who become their family's breadwinner.

I don't feel like doing a search, plus it's been posted in this thread many times, but anyone who wants to know Genie's nightmare can google the Lifetime Biography done about her back in the 90s.
She tells all!! and it wasn't pretty!
(Genie specifically mentions one person who was particularly cruel to her without naming the name. We later learned it was Gloria Monty.)

I doubt that the always put upon Genie was supporting her family way back when. Her father was a very popular actor who appeared on dozens of tv shows in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Including GH for a short while. He could support the family just fine.

Frank is a control freak to the max. C. 2008/9 when Nelson Branco was electrifying the cancellation gossip, Matt Walton (who was on OLTL as Eli) called me in a tizzy re: the cancellation rumors. He got it second hand from someone who was regurgitating Nelson, but he failed to mention his source. I understood it to mean cancellation was imminent. I in turn told Ilene Kristen who told her agent who completed the cycle and called Frank who called Ilene demanding to know the source. She was at wit's end not wanting to out Matt, because she said, "You don't know what he can do to you." I said I would take the fall. Frank called me directly and scolded me for upsetting his actor. "Next time, you call me!" as if I'd had a direct line. He is a survivor because he is so controlling. Ilene and Matt don't seem to be working much but there's Frank still at the helm.

Going way back again.....Amy was an enjoyable character but I wish they had made her a more serious character with a competent actress. Then they could have explored the sister relationship and when they got older do a Vining family mystery. Had that wing of Laura's family as the molester. What they did with the Rick character was unforgivable. The appearance of Laura into Leslie's life was barely explained. There was so much potential with Amy/Laura conflict. Anyway, this is the closest I could find to some David Hamilton stuff. When Leslie finds out Laura had remembered killing David before Leslie went on trial. Good stuff.

R152 Actually Lorraine Broderick was interim head writer after Charles Pratt's firing for three months, in early 2010, before Kreizman and Swajeski took over, only for Broderick to take over from them during the final three months of AMC, as you stated. Broderick was the HW when the AMC episodes first filmed in Los Angeles, with Greenlee's return from the dead/wedding to David, etc.
Broderick also coincidentally was Frank's first choice to HW GH when Frons offered him the job; however she wasn't interested, so Ron was brought in. Frank and Ron were both originally headed to Prospect Park/The Online Network to helm OLTL.

However, having known them back in NYC, it gave me a perspective. Frank knew me and didn't connect the dots when speaking to me in person. Shows have lost the ability to tell a story, period. They could do something like the David Hamilton story if it was rooted in reality and/or the context or history of a show.
Now, most shows see history as an albatross and either retcon it or disregard it entirely.

by Anonymous | reply 224 | January 27, 2025 5:19 PM |
Some actors find sets incredibly toxic; others find a second home filled with dear friends they stay in touch with forever.
DAYS is like this; it's a little island as it's NBC's (now Peacock's) only soap. Some people love it there; others run for the hills.
by Anonymous | reply 225 | January 27, 2025 5:23 PM |
R224 Michael B. Jordan wasn't happy there either. It's usually either really good or really bad, though to Jane's credit, she was there in the 80's, while Anna, Leven and Michael B. were all there in the 2000's

R225 True 😁 DOOL and B&B are pretty close, overall, for the most part; not as cliquish as Y&R or GH.

Matt Walton should have been a big soap star. I really liked the Eli Clark character. But suddenly the show made him a villain responsible for half the bad things that happened in Llanview.
What happened there? Why didn't Matt last at OLTL? Why did they suddenly rewrite everything to make Eli the crinimal behind so many bad things?
by Anonymous | reply 229 | January 27, 2025 5:50 PM |
I don't blame either Chadwick Boseman or Michael B Jordan for their negative impressions of AMC.
Soaps haven't been especially enlightened about a lot of things and the black experience is right up there. Jack "saving" Reggie is not unlike Nancy Hughes "saving" Kira or YR's Drucilla having a rich older sister and yet being illiterate.......

Lucci was the final straw that drove Taylor Miller away too. I think AMC was a so called welcoming set if you the mean girls liked you. Most of the men were gays and not interested.

[R233] Interesting that. There are a few degrees of separation. I am friendly with more than one AMCer. When one lives and works in NYC for over a decade, one meets people as one does. I hung out on the Upper West as one does. There are stories I could tell.
by Anonymous | reply 238 | January 27, 2025 8:46 PM |
R230 Excellent point. Still find it interesting that Chadwick and Michael B. both played the exact same role, only for them to stay together in a blockbuster movie. Michael B. said that Walt Willey used to yell at him to turn his music down on set; Michael E. Knight adored Michael B., though Michael E. seems to get along with practically everyone.
Kira on ATWT was portrayed by Lauryn Hill, right?
Drucilla being illiterate while Olivia went on to become a rich successful doctor, did they grow up in the same household? I never knew too much of their backstory.
African-American characters on soaps pre-2000's either tended to be really successful or really poverty-stricken, from my observation. There was never really any in between

R231 Cocaine use in the 80's mainly, or throughout the 90's/2000's? In the 80's I know cocaine use was common practice on many television/film sets. Care to share your thoughts on Leven being a "nightmare" 😊
It's probably in poor taste since he's going through a lot, however Cam Mathison and Eden Riegel weren't exactly nice to everyone either. They were both on an episode of The View once with Michael B. and Kassie DePaiva. Cam and Eden ignored Michael B., almost like that had no idea who he was; Kassie went up to Michael B and hugged him, which seemed to brighten his day.

by Anonymous | reply 246 | January 27, 2025 9:06 PM |
R235 Lucci was why Taylor Miller exited? Robin Strasser practically said that's why she quit as Christina Karras; according to her, it was nearly impossible for any other actress to shine since they were all pretty much in the shadows of Erica Kane. Those weren't her exact words, though that was the gist of it. She was supposed to play another character on OLTL before AMC's Christina, believe it was Kathy Craig, a rival of Viki's. When she inquired about the other actress playing Kathy, she was informed that the actress in question was being fired. Robin refused to play the part upon learning that was taking place.

by Anonymous | reply 250 | January 27, 2025 9:16 PM |
I believe that in its entire run Nina was the only character that rivaled Erica in popularity. Probably Jenny too but Kim couldn't wait to leave. Taylor was getting tired of basically play an exaggerated version of herself. She had other offers coming in, paying gobs of many, from nearly every other soap. That's about when Lucci started antagonizing the writers about the Nina character getting more attention, near equal money, blah blah blah.....Taylor just said you know what...bye. The third Victoria knew to start before they came. She personally nixed Cali Timmons as the Tina recast AFTER READING AND TESTING WITH HER. Sorry to derail a GH thread but I know a lot more about AMC and a little more about OLTL.

When I head people talking about how great it was to work with Susan Lucci and how she was beloved by everyone in the AMC cast, I never really bought into that idea. Always rang false. The more I read it, the less I believed it.
Similarly, when I heard people talking about how great Maurice Benard is and how beloved he is by everyone at GH, that especially rang false. The more I heard actors saying that, he more it seemed like they were following orders from TPTB at GH and ABC to speak glowingly of Maurice.
That was my gut feeling long before I discovered DataLounge and got all the inside scoop on shows.

R251 Oh wow that's interesting, I never heard that story. You're not derailing the thread at all, do you ever post in the AMC threads? Were Julia Barr or Kate Collins ever issues for Lucci? I've heard that she had problems with Deborah Goodrich and of course Sarah Michelle Gellar, infamously having her fired with the whole either she goes or I go ultimatum after Sarah Michelle won her Best Younger Actress Emmy.
Cali Timmons, I remember hearing that she was practically hired as Tina, only to not get the part. The entire story for Tina was scrapped; I don't recall the reason though it was apparently a smokescreen to not make Erika look bad.

Nancy Frangione (ex Cecile on AW) also played Tina briefly in 1985 before Andrea Evans returned. .

OLTL (Slezak) did Cali dirty and then Another World did her dirty. Maybe I'm jaded and mean, but I saw the MEK and James Scott thing as a new young actor trying to get an in and found the perfect way to do it.
by Anonymous | reply 269 | January 27, 2025 9:35 PM |
Lucci had a seething hatred for Deborah Goodrich. Goodrich was a real threat to the Erica character. There was not a single scene where the totally inexperienced Goodrich didn't steal from Lucci. You don't even need rumors for that. If you were watching at the time you will agree everyone loved Silver, loved someone finally giving it to Erica, and were so mad when they wrote her out in such a sudden, ridiculous way.

R293, Lieux Dressler was a great supporting actress. She should have won an Emmy.
Odd that both Lesley and Monica would have maids named Alice.
Alice was a great 'talk to' for Lesley when she went through that ordeal with Rick. First, being attracted to Monica. Then, wanting to make love to her. THEN, actually making love to her.

Emma is 21 and too old to have grandma Anna and Aunt Felicia monitoring what time she came home from the club. Her money schemes/cons are also juvenile so far. They should have made the character 18 to make this story line work.
At 21, she should have her own apartment and be an obnoxious Influencer or running a successful OnlyFans and give Anna something legitimate to be outraged about. Outrage over a 21 year old coming home at 2:00 a.m. is ridiculous.

Either conflict or camaraderie. Dante and Gio crossing paths in the kitchen or Dante perpetually pissed at Gio for blocking his car in the driveway. Gio and Rocco not getting along and Dante playing peacemaker. Something. Anything. No one is invested in this, no build up except shifty glances from Lois. The reveal will fall flat. No one is invested in forever frumpily dressed BLQ who goes full hazmat suit in the bedroom with the most desirable guy on the show.
Breakup Chase and frumpy BLQ and free Chase to do what soap hunks are supposed to do.

[quote] Wouldn't this Gio is BLQ and Dante's son be at least a tiny bit interesting if Gio actually had some interaction with Dante? Either conflict or camaraderie. Dante and Gio crossing paths in the kitchen or Dante perpetually pissed at Gio for blocking his car in the driveway. Gio and Rocco not getting along and Dante playing peacemaker. Something. Anything. No one is invested in this, no build up except shifty glances from Lois.
If the writers had any idea what to do with Gio, perhaps they would indeed be giving us Gio-Dante conflict scenes. Or Gio-Rocco at odds scenes. But that takes a bit of planning on the part of the writers. And they clearly have no idea what to do with Gio. He's been on since May and nine months later we know virtually nothing about him other than Sonny paid for his education.
Meanwhile, curfew breaking Emma Drake has been on less than 10 episodes and is already better defined than Gio.
by Anonymous | reply 343 | January 30, 2025 5:43 PM |
Gio is Cody's son.
by Anonymous | reply 344 | January 30, 2025 5:47 PM |
I would suggest Lucky as Gio's father. However, given that Lucky can't even be bothered to interact with his son Aiden, I doubt adding a new son will change much.
Given the fact that Lucky was off the canvas for 13 years, we could have dozens of his kids show up in the coming years.
by Anonymous | reply 345 | January 30, 2025 5:55 PM |
Gio being Cody's would be even less interesting.
At least with him being Dante's it would add to the conflict between BLQ* and Lulu, make things awkward between police partners Dante and Chase, piss off Olivia that Lois didn't tell her she had another grandson and Gio could make it his mission to antagonize great granny Tracy at every opportunity. No conflict where Cody's concerned.
*BLQ as played by a fashionable and sexy Brianna Lane while AS takes a LONG maternity leave.
by Anonymous | reply 346 | January 30, 2025 6:00 PM |
I loved AS on Oltl and thought her casting as Brooklyn was genius… what a letdown. Went from street smart whore to a non sexy puritan on GH. Where is her bitchy wit that would have made her a true Tracy jr? Is it the writing? Actress? All a mess!
by Anonymous | reply 347 | January 30, 2025 6:06 PM |
If Gio were Cody's son, that would make him Mac's grandson. So, Mac could get an insta-son and an insta-grandson in less than a year's time.
But as r346 pointed out, not much conflict if he's a Scorpio. Much more conflict if he's a Quatermaine-Cerullo-Falconeri-Corinthos.

CZ could be Lorena Sharpe Barrington, Monica's cousin, old owner of the Avalon Spa, who comes back to do battle with that pathetic Marta and Chloe nail salon. She comes to town for a loan unaware Monica is dead. Instant rival for Tracy, possible love interest for Sidwell.
by Anonymous | reply 349 | January 30, 2025 6:33 PM |
In real life, Carlo Rota (Sidwell) is married to a woman twenty years young than him. When I saw the photo I thought she was his daughter. They co-starred on 24 together.

Both Sidwell and Brennan (and sonny and Jason) have enough leading lady options onscreen with Carly, Nina, Lucy, Ava, Anna, Alexis, Natalia, Tracy and more.
Enough old lady actresses already.

Grammarly Spokeswoman Kristen Vaganos (Molly) and Josh Kelly (Cody) could work.
It appears they dropped the Lulu/Cody possibility. I suspect AlexaCameronBure has it in her contract that she won't be kissing every Tom, Dick and Harry on the show and they need to pair her with someone permanently and she will only kiss that someone when they are filming and not even during rehearsal. JJ probably has similar requirements.

Me thinks Mrs. Rota is hoping for a job on GH. Maybe she could be Sonny's new love interest since the Natalia thing is a bust. Or maybe she could work with her husband and be yet another Cassadine.

LuLu came back like a firecracker. Now she's in love with Dante? That's her big storyline? She clearly has brain damage because she forgot the hot cock Dustin was giving her right before she went into a coma. The show is pulling a DOUBLE fuck up (Lucky and Lulu).

I actually remember reading an article in soap opera digest in the 90s lol:
The name thing got confusing on the gh set because almost everyone was referred to by character name on set EXCEPT Gloria Monty called the actor tony Geary “tony.” And, of course, tony Jones was also on canvas then. I think Geary was playing bill.

Ironically, Denise Crosby bears a resemblance to Robin Mattson; so Jeff's third wife looks like his second.
The show blew it by not writing that Jeff reunited with Anne Logan and SHE is LIz's mom.
Susan Pratt showed up at a few GH past cast events a while ago and looked amazing. She and Robin could have gone another round.
I do think it's odd that there are some eras of GH that the show hardly ever dips into. Are we ever going to see Sly Eckert? The show mostly taps into super popular times of the show. Wisely.

More like the actress and her stranglehold on the character.
Could she work at Sephora or a department store cosmetics counter and refuse to wear makeup?
In many ways, she's no different than Mo, she calls the shots on her character and story line to the detriment of the show. Josh should be part of a hot couple creating SM buzz and being featured on whatever few soap sites are left.

R357 Believe it or not, Dominic doesn't like playing triangles where he's in competition with another man. Josh and Alexa were both apparently interested in what Cody and Lulu could get themselves into. Dominic was able to have the Dante/Lulu/Johnny and the Dante/Lulu/Dustin triangles stopped; certain actors have relationships with TPTB where they can ask for certain favors, within reason.

The problem with all these retcons and rewrites is that they weaken the storytelling. Why invest in a story that’s playing out now if it ultimately gets retconned a year or two from now? It chips away at the integrity of the show and turns viewers off in the process. It’s a really lazy way to write a show.

R412 😁😁 no Hayden wasn't really necessary, at least not long-term; she was supposed to be a temporary character initially- though Frank & Ron, especially Frank, wanted Rebecca on GH for awhile prior to her being hired. Frank decided to bring her back with a four year contract, then promptly dismissed her two years in, to pay for Steve's contract, which was network mandated, courtesy of Maurice. Frank "allegedly" soured on Rebecca after her and Michael Easton became a little too close for comfort.

Question, why does Tracy not like Sasha?
by Anonymous | reply 427 | February 2, 2025 3:38 PM |
The problem I have with the character Sonny Corinthos is that ABC has glorified a murderer. They seem to not understand that making Luke a main character was more acceptable because, although he was a rapist, he was filled with self-hate. Sonny repeatedly kills people (and does other nefarious things about which we are not told, but each of his crimes has victims), and there is not regret or self-hate or growth -- only justification. Off the top of my head, I remember seeing Sonny kill AJ Quartermaine, someone from the 'five families,' and most recently an FBI agent. He's never punished, he shows no remorse, and he continues to kill. That's a program's main character? He does good things for the community -- great! He's loyal to his family -- great! But neither of those things erase that he's a murderer and goodness knows what else. The character should either be made to pay or he should be written off. Keeping him as a leading man sends a terrible message to viewers and makes the show runners look spineless.
by Anonymous | reply 428 | February 2, 2025 5:22 PM |
R428 All of this, plus the actor is way beyond his expiration date. He also dictates story, casting and pairings to Frank. He is now indistinguishable from his character and the entire show is compromised because of him. Last week the character of Natalia had scenes with Lucy and we got to see another, lighter side of the character. Mo is bringing everyone on that stage down with him.

Recap of Carlo Rota (Sidwell) on Mo's show:
Mo is tired of hearing complaints about his dyed black hair. He wants it grey. TPTB his hair black.
Mo introduced Carlo as playing the character "Carlo". Guess he forgot he plays Sidwell. Mo said that before they started filming Carlo commented how beautiful his own wife is while she was sitting across the room. Then Carlo went on about how beautiful his wife is and how people can't believe he's married to her. Turned me off to Carlo.
Italian Carlo grew up poor in a ghetto in London, one toilet for entire apartment building. His father later became a successful Chef and the family traveled the world because of his job. He started acting when he was 30 after being in the restaurant business with his family.
When asked about mental health Carlo went off on a verbose tangent about how it's important to protect one's mental health in show business. Carlo finds cooking therapeutic and his wife talks him down when he feels like giving up.
Mo said that for him it's about ego. He had a vision when he was having one of his panic attacks that all his problems are about his ego. He told his agent about this vision and his agent told Mo he doesn't have an ego (WTF??). Mo says he told his agent he wants to be king and he's happy to be king but he doesn't want anyone else to be king. I loathe this guy, truly I do. I regret watching this episode. I thought I would like Carlo because he's from an immigrant Italian family and so am I, but I'm not particularly crazy about Carlo either.
They discussed the solace of prayer.
Carlo praised Mo's scene in the church with Sasha. He also said Steve is a solid guy who gave him solid advice on his first day.
Mo asked Carlo the former restaurateur how to make a good steak.
Carlo met his wife on the show Relic where she played his daughter. Then they ran into each other six years later when she was wearing "micro shorts that looked like she bought them at Toys R Us". He and his wife are different religions and his wife will explain more when she's on.
Maybe there was more, IDK. I lost interest.

Best GH character ever...Laura Vining Webber Baldwin Spencer Collins....we watched her grow from a pre-teen to mid 60s. She's been the heroine, she's been the hero, she's been the open ear, she's been the shoulder to cry on, she's been the killer. Note, I'm not answering best ACTRESS of all time. But, as a character, Laura has left her mark for 50 years.
by Anonymous | reply 447 | February 2, 2025 10:52 PM |
[quote]Who do you think is the best character GH ever had?
Nicholas Cassadine.
I have often said that, in my opinion, the Nicholas story is one of the best GH has ever done. It married the past with the then-present, and it showed what a damaged person Laura is. It caused a bunch of chaos and tension that lasted a couple of years. They couldn't sustain it long-term, but for a short while it was just the pinnacle of soap opera story-telling. Laura is a mess and nothing showcased that more than when Nicholas showed up. Tyler was perfectly cast and played the role incredibly well.

Kin was gorgeous back then, and still did it for me later on.
I mean we all hit a wall someday, but he looked good into the 90s and early 00s.

R447 You think LAURA is the best character? Seriously? She married her rapist. She slept with both Cassadine sons. She refused to acknowledge Nicholas was her son until Stefan forced her to. She probably killed Rick Webber. Her son is a jobless hobo and yet she pretends that's normal.

by Anonymous | reply 465 | February 3, 2025 7:06 PM |
Frank's comment about Mesure's departure seemed rather cut and dry.
Wonder what happened. He's only been on Contract since September so he only did one 13-week cycle.
Mesure mentioned several times he has trouble remembering his lines and also adjusting to the fast soap pace. Were they having to do too many takes with him to get it right and he was costing them time and money? Just spit balling...
I picture Charles and Adam Harrington commiserating over dinner and drinks.

by Anonymous | reply 470 | February 3, 2025 7:57 PM |
There's been speculation here on DL that Laura Wright didn't like being paired with Charles Mesure, wanted someone hotter. Also speculation that she would use her power to get rid of Mesure.
Looks like that speculation was right on target.
by Anonymous | reply 471 | February 3, 2025 8:31 PM |
I look forward in seeing how Chris McKenna does as Brennan.
But part of the allure of Jack Brennan was his Australian accent. So, it will almost be like a new characte if McKenna plays it with an American accent.
I mean, imagine Robert Scorpio without the Australian accent or Anna DeVane without the British accent.
by Anonymous | reply 472 | February 3, 2025 8:37 PM |
Looks like all the fawning Mesure did over LW on X was for naught.
Mesure is only 53 but looks older plus he needed to drop a few pounds which lately it appears he had. I guess he wasn't the catch HRH The Duchess of Wide-Ass envisioned for her beady eyed self.
by Anonymous | reply 473 | February 3, 2025 8:39 PM |
Whether he left because he wanted to, or was pushed, I imagine our new president and Holy Roller gov't is a silver lining for him, if he's going home. Anybody that CAN leave, should, esp the gays. We're into American's Dark Ages, again.
by Anonymous | reply 474 | February 3, 2025 8:46 PM |
It would be wise to drop the Aussie accent and not put that added pressure on McKenna.
They should have learned their lesson with MEK who was unable to keep up the accent. Actually, they should have learned with John J. York and his faux Aussie accent. They did come up with a reason for Lois to drift in and out of her accent which is less pressure on Rena after 30 years or however long it's been.
Kathleen Gati said it took a lot to get into character with the accent. She had to isolate herself and focus before scenes and was unable to joke around and engage with her co-stars and those around her before scenes due to the pressure to remain on point with the accent.
by Anonymous | reply 475 | February 3, 2025 8:46 PM |
The accents certainly do add to the character. I can't imagine Lisel Obrecht being nearly as scary and fierce without the German accent.
Over at Days, Joe Mascolo, who played Stefano, had to use his Italian accent throughout his day in the studio. Co-workers reported being surprised to see him outside of work and discovering he spoke in an American accent.

Someone did mention at the end of last year that there would be another "high profile departure" at the beginning of the year. I wonder if Mesure is who they were referring to.
by Anonymous | reply 504 | February 4, 2025 12:39 PM |
R504 The "rumor" is a certain someone, Maurice, wasn't thrilled about all the attention Mesure was getting, similarly to Adam J. Harrington. Not really trying to defend Wright but both her and Burton weren't exactly "threatened" by Mesure, who was actually a hit with fans, along with his budding romance with Carly.
by Anonymous | reply 505 | February 4, 2025 12:52 PM |
Although, everyone who says that LW didn't want a relationship with Brennan, she didn't until the fan reaction began to warm up to them. She's wanted Carly with Jason for the longest, then when SB refused, she wanted Jagger, then Brennan as a last resort

Chris McKenna said Erika Slezak sent him a note congratulating him on getting the role of Brennan.
Erika was talking to Frank and Frank told her Chris landed the role. My question is: why was Erika talking to Frank? Is there something in the works for her to drop by Port Charles? It's being suggested on X that Erika play Brennan's mother.
Chris is going to need to shed a few pounds. Understandable as the role came as a surprise and it all happened very fast and he was put straight to work. He's obviously a good actor and I'm glad he's not even attempting to have an accent.

[R531] There are really good people there, but we focus on those who lack maturity. The journeyman actors do their job and don't pee on the carpet. Unfortunately they're the ones who get the shaft more often than not. It's Valentini who needs to be eliminated.

Did Sonny and Brennan ever share any scenes together?

But about six months after he started, he was axed. I thought Steinmetz was doing a good job. Far better than Maurice. Of course, it doesn't take much to give a better performance than Mo.
Did Mo use his power to get Steinmetz fired?

As much as I loathe Mo, I don't think the Mesure situation is his doing.

So 47 year-old Chris McKenna is playing Brenann, who went gone through WSB training with a young Anna Devane, played by 65 year-old actress Finola Hughes, and Valentin Cassadine, played by 56 year-old James Patrick Stuart. Listen, I'm not complaining -- I've wanted to see Chris McKenna back on soaps for years. Too bad on Y&R they didn't make him a top to Kevin's bottom -- they both looked like they wanted to get it on in every scene.
by Anonymous | reply 541 | February 5, 2025 11:56 AM |
I believe Mesure when he tells the press that he realized the gig was no longer for him.
He's was probably fine working off and on the show for slightly above union minimum and free to look for other acting jobs, but now the show's put him into leading man story and certainly not bumping him up to leading man pay for a while. Plus a much more difficult shooting schedule.
The actors who have been doing for a while are used to the quick pace and are compensated for it. But we're seeing a lot of actors these days say no thanks.
by Anonymous | reply 542 | February 5, 2025 1:49 PM |
McKenna looks a few years older than he is - he's not THAT much younger than Mesure.

R555 Frank and Ron, particularly Ron, were shifting away from the mob ties connected to Sonny as the main focus, Scully, then eventually Trey, Connie and Johnny were all written out as well, in favor of Julian, Ava, Duke, as more of an homage to old school GH, which Ron admired in his youth. The mob was also supposed to be more of a backdrop, which Maurice saw as Ron's way of pushing Sonny to the background. Steve quit to join Y&R while Lindsey Morgan's Kristina was also written out, though that had more to do with the actress not being able to handle the rigors of daytime, yet the mob revolving around Sonny was what Ron tried to steer away from, in favor of a more ensemble show. Richard probably would've irked Mo's nerves had he worked there long enough, however; usually actors who are indifferent to him (NAC) or obviously more popular amongst cast members (Ted King) exacerbate his anxiety.
by Anonymous | reply 562 | February 6, 2025 12:05 AM |

[quote]yet the mob revolving around Sonny was what Ron tried to steer away from, in favor of a more ensemble show.
That was one thing that Ron understood correctly. His first year at HW, when Sonny was not the center of the show, was exciting and compelling.
It made me realize I don't mind Sonny when he's just one of the many players in the ensemble. What I do object to is Sonny being the center of the show and all things revolving around his amoral character who never pays for his heinous crimes.
by Anonymous | reply 564 | February 6, 2025 12:25 AM |

R564 Agreed. Many fans were initially happy overall with Ron's ideas, especially from when he first began until early 2015, saying it felt nostalgic. Maurice & Tony G. were the main ones who had a problem with his writing and spearheaded the mutiny. Sonny vs. Michael was an interesting story until Maurice voiced his displeasure.

R564 Interestingly enough, both Ron and Patrick Mulcahey felt Sonny should pay for his crimes, either in prison or amongst the townspeople, not the lovable mobster angle that's preferred by Mo.

R568 They do, especially many older women and even older men too who were fans of the Guza years.

R569 Without a doubt. The shows are primarily focused on retaining their old audience, especially GH. Sonny and Carly are essentially Victor and Nikki.

Same at DAYS. He's good at reorganizing and shining up the work of others. It's seldom very deep or has a lot of context, but he knows how to play the greatest hits.
It's when he has to generate substantial story of his own that he falls into his usual patterns - lots of crazy women, dual personalities, and all the over the top stuff. Poor DAYS is dealing with a soap within a soap story that should have lasted a few weeks and is going on now for several months. He really does not know how to write a cohesive show. He'd probably be great if he only had a few characters to write for at a time.

The actress who plays Nikki on Y&R is 68 years old and doesn't dress frumpy like Snarly.

But Victor = Sonny.
Always has to win.

It seems Valentini and Colleen are mutually dismissive. I've heard she believes GH is a toxic environment (go figure). How is it he considers her untalented when he hangs on to so many untalented actresses for years. Ms Zeman, may she rest in peace, couldn't act her way out of a paper bag. smh. Frank needs to go be toxic at home all by himself. ATWT producers so much better

CZ is right. And she's probably heard it from others.
Certainly enough of her ATWT colleagues have worked there or have experiences there at GH. Even some fans know how toxic it is there.

Is McKenna going to turn out to be another Adam Harrington? Handsome guy in a suit with no personality or charisma?
He's making me regret my criticism of Mesure.

McKenna had a really hot, dirty edge on YR. Hope he can bring that to GH.
