TV Shows with Gay Male Characters: The Revenge

Continue talking about shows with gay male characters

Invisible Boys was really good. Can recommend.

It's interesting that 'DYNASTY' sort of flirted with the idea of having a main character as being gay in the 80s (but then turned straight or bi - who knows, as the writing of characters was so messy back then), yet other night-time dramas didn't touch it. Really - no gay men (or women) in southern California 'Knots Landing' ? None in Dallas, 'Dallas' ? None in Napa Valley, 'Falcon Crest' ? None lived on 'Flamingo Road' ?

There's a gay married couple on the new CBS soap opera, Beyond the Gates, that started this week.

Martin and Smitty (Bradley) have been married for quite some time and have two adopted kids who are now teenagers. Martin is a congressman, while Smitty gave up his career as a journalist to become a full-time househusband. Elements of tension in their relationship have already been telegraphed.

“Knots Landing” did have a moment early on where Richard accused Laura and Ciji of being in a lesbian relationship and he asked which one is the man.

Later, Laura commented on how small minded it is to try to assign those roles to a relationship. But that was it.

Elder gays, was it exciting that dynasty had a gay character? Was it ultimately disappointing when he married Sammy Jo? Did it seem like they forgot he was gay?

by Anonymousreply 9March 1, 2025 1:20 PM

Wait a minute. "Sweet Magnolias" has a gay storyline? Why, I never! I was in the hospital a while back and someone who knows I read constantly but does not read herself bought me a Sweet Magnolias novel. It was a sweet gift and very thoughtful but I could only get so far in because I read literary fiction and history books and it read like a pleasant, soapy book for little old ladies. When I saw the show pop up on Netflix, I thought, "And now there's a show for little old ladies!"

How I misjudged, r4!

No, you're right R10, it's soapy LCD fluff, just now with added gay for the discerning grandmother with "sus" grandkids.

by Anonymousreply 12March 4, 2025 5:32 PM

Steven was having an affair with Claudia by the end of the first season of “Dynasty”. Yet they kept calling him gay. He seemed like he didn’t even like Ted Dinard. They certainly had no chemistry.

r6 It's CBS, they're castrated.

R14 I figured.

Steven Carrington gave hope to all the insecure little 80's closed case gaylings in development that maybe one day we will grow out of it... or maybe the conversion therapy will work. Spoiler alert: Nope!

by Anonymousreply 29April 16, 2025 11:40 AM

How can we talk about TV shows with gay characters without mentioning "BEWITCHED" (1964-72) ?

Uncle Arthur was most obviously gay, there was no hiding the fact that Paul Lynde was gay and he incorporated his sexuality into the character (and as books on the series have stated, the producers and writers didn't have a problem with this).

by Anonymousreply 30April 16, 2025 11:48 AM

R9 I think ABC promoting Steven Carrington as a 'gay character' was nothing more than a gimmick to tell viewers "We're different from 'Dallas'" when the series premiered in January 1981. They wanted to be 'different' and 'cutting edge' for the 80s, and this was supposed to do it and attract viewers - especially gay male viewers. It didn't.

Al Corley played the character so blandly that no one cared about him, or the storyline about his boyfriend being killed. Added to this was the horrible AIDS outbreak in gay society, and I have a feeling the writers wanted to distance themselves from a gay character. Steven's 'sexuality' was suddenly heterosexual.

The addition of Joan Collins, if nothing else, attracted the gay male viewers to the series.

by Anonymousreply 31April 16, 2025 11:56 AM

R31-,Dynasty was never in the same league as Dallas which was at its best in the early 1980’s.

by Anonymousreply 32April 16, 2025 12:56 PM

[quote] Elder gays, was it exciting that dynasty had a gay character? Was it ultimately disappointing when he married Sammy Jo? Did it seem like they forgot he was gay?

R9, I remember kind of a thrill when I read that there was a gay son on Dynasty. It helped that he was a good looking guy. Like everything else at the time, the gay son conformed to the prejudicial attitudes back then. He was a disappointment and then his gayness was erased.

There were no positive role models for a gay teenager like me. The first positive one was Aidan Quinn in "An Early Frost." He was successful and well-adjusted. But he was condemned to die

by Anonymousreply 33April 16, 2025 1:59 PM

R32 I never said it was in the same league as 'Dallas' - but there's no denying ABC wanted their own night-time drama to rival 'Dallas'. To draw viewers to their new series, they tried a few things to 'push the envelope' to show they were 'cutting edge' in the 80s, and this was not your 70's drama. It didn't go as planned.

Dallas premiered on CBS April 1978 as a replacement for The Carol Burnett Show- 47 years ago this month.

OK, nvm, they already broke up.

by Anonymousreply 37April 17, 2025 12:58 PM

Sort of gay-adjacent:

Aside from 'Steven', the gays son on "DYNASTY", Joan Collins' character was supposedly the first female 'executive' to hire a male secretary (and from the actors which were cast, and their portrayal of the male secretary - it may have been implied they were gay).

I remember TV Guide (or one of those magazines) did an article on this, saying the 'boardroom' had come a long way in the 80s with female execs and male secretaries, and interviewed some of those actors who filled in as her secretary. As most of them noted, they didn't have much to do in a scene otherwise follow an unexpected Krystle Carrington into her office, and exclaim (all a-flutter) "I'm so sorry Mrs. Colby ! I couldn't stop her! She barged right past me !" (Later they would say the same thing about Dominique Devereaux). How weak and afraid were these waifs if they couldn't stop the likes of Krystle or Dominique from barging in ? Of course, Alexis didn't mind the intrusions.

Aside from "Dyansty" the only other male secretaries I saw occasionally was on 'Knots Landing' - Abby and Paige both employed men to be their assistants (though again, from what I recall, not overly-masculine). I think Murphy Brown had her share, too.

Can we please stick to current tv shows with gay male characters?

by Anonymousreply 39April 18, 2025 6:01 AM

I don't think it's been mentioned that daytime soap, General Hospital, added a new gay male character earlier this month.

The character's name "Marco Rios" /aka/ "Eloi."

Marco is being played by out actor, Adrian Anchondo, of whom you can find many sexy photos at his IG: javichondo

He's not shy, guys.

R39 No. The thread title just says "TV Shows With Gay Male Characters: The Revenge" - no timetable is specified.

Next question ?

by Anonymousreply 41April 18, 2025 11:51 AM

R41 I think R39 is playing off OP's line, "Continue talking about shows with gay male characters," and this thread was meant to be a continuation of the previous SIX threads on the subject where the topic was, "What are the current TV shows with gay male characters?" but it wasn't correctly stated as such with this one. Oh well.

I've never seen the show, but there is rumor that we might get a gay relationship on future episodes or seasons of the UK/Tubi show Boarders. The openly gay character Omar from the group invited to the school has a frenemy in the form of the twinkish Harry Gilby's Rupert. Heterosexual actor Harry also played gay king Æthelstan toward the end of the Last Kingdom and a gay teen on the 33rd season of Casualty.
