Pronunciation Question

Does "Dew" rhyme with view or do. Noticed that Broadway and opera singers use the first. Same for "new" .. is it noo?

by Anonymousreply 21July 13, 2025 2:18 PM

It rhymes with dew.

by Anonymousreply 1January 19, 2025 12:31 PM

Do. But some parts of America sure dee-yew love their diphthongs.

OP, stage singers are trained to drop their jaws and heavily annunciate words. This allows for the words to be understood over the music and further away from the stage.

Dew rhymes with View, not Voo. Same as News rhymes with cues and mews, not Booze.

Don’t view and dew rhyme with each other?

by Anonymousreply 5July 12, 2025 1:15 AM

R5 You are correct. Atlanta Constitution "Covers Dixie Like the Dew." Not the "Do"

In the U.S., isn’t it mainly “doo”? I’m Canadian and we say “dyoo”, as does Britain and the other Commonwealth countries.

Speaking of dew, how 'bout some Morning Dew?

Rod Stewart does the vocals.

I prefer Tullamore DEW

by Anonymousreply 10July 12, 2025 2:17 AM

Oh, come on. Mountain Dyoo sounds ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 11July 12, 2025 2:17 AM

R11 Not if you say it quickly.

by Anonymousreply 12July 12, 2025 4:10 PM

It's not Mountain Doo, r11.

by Anonymousreply 13July 12, 2025 4:13 PM

Even more so if you say it quickly

by Anonymousreply 14July 12, 2025 4:14 PM

Yes it is, r13. Of course.

Friend is an anchor at major market station. In newscast he said "the Clinton era," pronouncing it EH-ruh. Director later told him it's EER-uh. If you say "EH-ruh," viewers hear is as "error" - Clinton's mistake.

"Dyoo" was THE only approved RP and Mid-Atlantic pronunciation.

Like EWWWWW

by Anonymousreply 18July 12, 2025 6:10 PM

People that say Mountain Dyo are, well, you know.

It’s that Gen X speak. Like double TT is “bi-n for bitten. There’s just an “uh” in there instead of the even bare attempt at doing the real TT with the tongue to the back of your front teeth.

Isn’t dropping the Ts a Cockney thing?
