Because we need a new one. Who is Toni Tipton-Martin and why is she on the show? Yes, I know she's a writer and editor-in-chief at Cook's Country. But what does she add to the program? It seems she provides some historical background that was presented much better by people like Bridget, Julia, Elle, and Dan. Also, when she's doing her presentation, there's always a shot of her from the side. For no reason. She has very little personality, and she's even worse when she's accompanying one of the chefs. It seems her only comments have to do with how something smells. The shows are pretty diverse. Were they not diverse enough? Too many cooks.

I want Dan Souza inside me, quite deeply!

I anxiously await the x rated version when Dan is spit roasted by hot daddy Keith Dresser and daddy bear Bryan Roof.

Toni was added after the Floyd summer I believe. Before all the top line principals were white - Bridget, Julia, Adam, Dan, Bryan etc.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 17, 2025 8:23 PM |
We'll probably have to settle for Jack Bishop fellating Adam Ried.

I make Toni's recipe for sweet potato pie every Thanksgiving. The special ingredient is orange zest. Works like a charm. 1 pound roasted sweet potato, half cup sugar, half cup brown sugar, half stick butter, 2 eggs, half cup half n half, 1 tsp vanilla, 1 tsp orange zest, 1 tsp cinnamon, half tsp nutmeg. Blend everything together thoroughly, I use an immersion blender. Pour into a raw pie shell. I like a whole wheat crust, the nutty flavor pairs well with the sweet potato. Bake at 350 for an hour.

I use some of their cookbooks, but I didn’t realize they had a TV show. Is it not boring? Seems like it would boring. Do they show them testing recipes with ham hocks, pancetta and bacon to determine which works best? Tasting canned tomatoes? Testing blenders?

Seriously.

Read a bit from Wiki, then go to YouTube and do a search.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 17, 2025 8:46 PM |
Bridget and Julia were principals. Dan, Bryan, Elle, Lam, Keith etc are the second tier.

Bryan Roof can put cream on my pie.

There's a new YouTube video with Lisa visiting the CES in Vegas to discuss all the new kitchen-related hardware being promoted. There are some pretty "out-there" things, including a robot barista.

My favorite is Elle Simone and it's because I think I'd really like the dishes she prepares on camera.
My least favorite is Becky Hays. Horrible, chirpy voice and worse recipes.

I love ATK and its crew, particularly Lam and Keith; she of the soothing voice and he of the quiet fire.
Has the new(?) show, "America's Test Kitchen at Home" premiered?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 17, 2025 9:18 PM |
I love Hannah Crowley. I don't think she's been on any of the TV shows yet, but she regularly does the "Gear Heads" videos with Lisa McManus. But I cannot STAND Valerie Li Stack, who's subbing for Lisa in the attached video. She's also done some of the taste-testing videos. Her accent is so odd.

I hate her for her name alone.

Does Adam have meth mouth?
Has Dan's palsey improved?
I do miss Kimball's shop bottom Mat Card.

I own one of Toni’s books. It is very well written because all the recipes work (looking at you, Jamie and Nigella). I did not know she was on ATK.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 18, 2025 7:09 AM |
Nigella is not a cook to follow if you do not know how to cook. She is more like nonna cucina in stilettos.

I have always loved ATK, and it’s given me a great reputation as a cook and baker. The sale to Marquee Brands felt like a gut punch. And while I used to joke about every issue’s “new” recipe for roast chicken, their identity now is more scattershot. It’s not nearly as jolting as Chris Kimball discovering spice and corporate endorsements with Milk Street.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 18, 2025 12:20 PM |
Chris Kimball's shtick as a Yankee who hates spicy food is hilarious, as Milk Street tours South and SE Asia with studied glee.
Kimball was a hand waving jerk, and those old openings of ATK where he ragged on recipes necessitating the magic of an ATK makeover are particularly disgusting. It's a pity he took Erica to Milk Street because she was particularly skilled at sugar work and pastry.
But Julia and Bridgett have filled the bill as a duo.
Plus, ATK has gone on to not make anyone an expert in one area. Everyone does Asian, Breakfast, Vegetables, Bread and so on.
I am waiting for Kimball to do Chilled Monkey Brains from Indiana Jones...
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 18, 2025 1:17 PM |
Keith Dresser has an amazing head of hair (and the stylists for ATK know it, which is cool by me). Plus he's that rare man who can really rock a salt and pepper beard. I don't think there's much of a body under the clothes, but he would be charming if you met him for drinks on a first date, you'd want to take him home for some naked fun... he's got to be straight, right?
As for Toni Tipton-Martin, I think she added to tell the caucasian PBS audience that all the good food in America originated in kitchens run by slaves. Slaves everwhere prepared about good, flavorful food. That has largely stopped, but her early appearances? Yea, that was it.

[quote] She is more like nonna cucina in stilettos.
Only nonna’s recipes actually work.
She's more of a renowned hostess and very good food writer than a recipe creator. She peaked with How To Be A Domestic Goddess and Nigella Bites, which contains very tasty, mostly successful baking and dinners. The rest of her oeuvre is easily stoppable for cooking purposes.
Jamie has lots of weird and creative ideas that he loves to share with us when he shouldn’t (the avocado pastry for one) but he is solid in general.

She's not. She's on Cook's Country (and is the editor of the magazine of the same name.)
by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 18, 2025 2:48 PM |
While Kimball's opening with how dishes go wrong was pretty annoying, he did bring a certain amount of reality when Julia or Bridget were making their dishes. He asked good questions and had good commentary. Julia (aka Mrs. Claus, "Ho, Ho, Ho") and Bridget too often just gush over each other. But they have gotten better as the hosts over the years.
I kinda like Becky. She's fulfilling a role - vegetarian dishes. Not my preferred cuisine, but her personality doesn't bother me. Elle is great.
Lan is one of the best. Her Techniquely shows are excellent. I really like Ashley and Christy. Lawman isn't very good.
And every time Julia says in one of the promos, "no more soggy bottoms," Adam has to leave the room.
I'm also a fan of Jack and his tasting tests. Entertaining and informative. I guess that's my problem with TT-M. She's not entertaining, like Jack, Adam, and Lisa.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 18, 2025 4:49 PM |
Lan Lam has really come into her own. She always has been great with baking techniques, but this month she wrote a recipe for Gà Kho Gừng - which is Vietnamese caramel chicken. Her description of how immigrant foods bring both pride and shame was really moving.

What's Eating Dan is one of my favorite YouTube watches. He's the whole package; talented, funny, and handsome.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 18, 2025 5:53 PM |
They run the episodes nonstop on Pluto TV and most of them are entertaining and if you wait an hour or two they repeat them. Adam Ried is HARD to look at, he's morphing into Jabba the Hutt. And you can tell that whoever he's talking to is looking at his wonky right eye. It's gotta be a glass eye.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 19, 2025 2:16 AM |
Did Adam Ried ever not pick an best appliance that wasn't a Breville or a kitchen tool that wasn't an OXO product?

R30 = Dan.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | August 19, 2025 12:13 AM |
I only saw her in one cooking segment with one of the second (or third?) tier chefs, and she looked uncomfortable and not in her element.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | August 19, 2025 12:20 AM |
You can never go wrong with Breville or Oxo. On the other hand, you can go wrong with Lan's turkey meatloaf, which sucked. I was shocked.
All the baked goods are great. Loved the Irish soda bread.
I don't mind Toni. I like hearing about Leah Chase.

Toni is not charismatic - deeply uncomfortable on TV.
There's no rule that the editor of Cook's Country needs to be on television.

17 E7 - The Ultimate Sticky Buns
May 20, 2005 23min TV-G Julia and Bridget head into the test kitchen to uncover the secrets to making the ultimate Sticky Buns at home. Next, Jack challenges Bridget to a tasting of Almond Butter. And finally, Adam reviews waffle irons in the equipment corner.

Used to love these shows. However they gush so much about how wonderful everything smells and how great the finished product is. Got turned off by this "self-petting" behavior and only watch occasionally. My late mother couldn't stand Christopher Kimball. Didn't mind him for quite while but grew to dislike him later. At least he was shuttled off to his own show, probably much to the relief of ATK and CC staff.
