I have been watching the episodes furiously. I'm on season 3 episode 7. Some episodes are so good and some scenes in some episodes are so well done but they frequently go off onto a tangent which is particularly boring. In the previous episode Melissa is dating the 23 year old painter ( really good looking Corey Parker). I was that age in 1989. They show in black and white several minutes ( BORING minutes) of Melissa in the ring as a boxer but overall I like the show a lot. I did not watch a single minute of the show when it was on the air. For some reason the title thirtysomething offended me like phrases I hate now like GIFTING. Anyway here is the very first episode. Better start watching them now because a copyright problem will occur and ALL of the episodes will be deleted and there is nowhere else to stream them as far as I know. Don't worry the link works just click watch on youtube and you can watch the entire episode on youtube.

Yeah, no. I’m not watching any of this shit again.

Ken Olin and Mel Harris were one of the most attractive couples on TV.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 12, 2025 11:41 PM |
It was interesting at the time, but I can't say I've much interest in watching again.
Those tangents that OP mentions, and any scene with the execrable Elliot (Timothy Busfied.) And all that angst.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 13, 2025 12:08 AM |
Rewatched the pilot—what a period piece! It was a little startling when Melanie Myron says “I lied about my age. I told someone I was born in the ‘60s. I don’t know anyone who was born in the ‘60s!”
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 13, 2025 12:49 AM |
The kids in the show are now thirtysomething
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 13, 2025 1:43 AM |
R6- The actor who played Nancy and Elliot's son is now 44 years old in real life!
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 13, 2025 3:53 AM |
R3 a butch and a hunk?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 13, 2025 4:07 AM |
I would rather watch the elephants shit at the circus then watching that bullshit again. Those idiots were the unfunny " Friends", and no one I know was so self absorbed with themselves in their 30's - especially after having children.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 13, 2025 4:49 PM |
R9- Three’s Company was a shitty show and even that show was better than Friends.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 13, 2025 6:34 PM |
This show debuted on this date in 1987.

What season/episode has the gay sex scene that was later banned from repeats?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 30, 2025 4:34 AM |
I loved this show. Is the YouTube video quality good?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 30, 2025 5:04 AM |
It wasn't a sex scene. It just showed two men in bed talking. It's called Strangers and is Season 3 episode 6.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 30, 2025 5:08 AM |
R3 Yes, conversely, Redhead and his wife were the ugliest.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 30, 2025 5:42 AM |
Miles Drentell was the shark this show jumped out on.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 30, 2025 5:50 AM |
Miles made the show more interesting
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 30, 2025 5:51 AM |
The writers admitted they blundered with the episode where Miles dates Melissa.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 30, 2025 6:55 AM |
I wanted to be double teamed by Peter Horton and Ken Olin.

I'm reminded of this exchange from "Golden Girls":
ROSE: Poor Sophia. You still upset because your friend Bernice moved to Chicago?
SOPHIA: No, Rose. I'm upset because I can't relate to "Thirtysomething."
by Anonymous | reply 20 | September 30, 2025 3:39 PM |
Incidentally, here's Timothy Busfield winning an Emmy for 'Thirtysomething' presented by the 'Golden Girls.'
by Anonymous | reply 21 | September 30, 2025 3:54 PM |
I imagine this was the winner of “the most male pubes in a TV drama” Emmy. All the men looked like they had thatches downstairs.

My two older sisters loved this show. It helped them transition from wild girls to suburban moms I guess.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | September 30, 2025 5:51 PM |
Busfield had been nominated for the Emmy for the previous 3 years so that may explain his cynicism at winning this time.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 30, 2025 6:07 PM |
My parents watched this show, even at ten years old I thought it was self-indulgent Boomer garbage.
None of the cast ever did much afterwards, did they?
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 30, 2025 6:10 PM |
As opposed to Patricia Wettig who had won two before but still is gracious.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 30, 2025 6:12 PM |
There was a scene in an episode that stuck with me, but I’ve never been able to find it. Hope and Nancy were sitting on the porch and Hope was basically, it’s been terrible year, but sometimes it’s just about getting through. That feels very much what 2025 has been like.
I loved the show. Even if you didn’t, it transformed the way most TV shows are filmed. The actors are always busy with physical activity, which often provides structure to the scenes. That is more like 70s realistic theater, and many shows now follow this approach.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 30, 2025 6:14 PM |
Last year, I rewatched China Beach, which also aired Wednesday nights on ABC. CB held up well but I don't think Thirty will.
Here's Busfield talking about shitbra.

thirtysomething was Tuesday night at 10 eastern, r29.

by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 30, 2025 7:29 PM |
Thanks. I stand corrected. Don't know why I thought it was Wednesday. I'm old.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 30, 2025 7:39 PM |
I hated this show when it originally aired, so I'm sure I'd hate it even more if I watched it now.
I could not stand watching these good looking young people with beautiful houses and great jobs and normal families sit around week after week and talk about how miserable they were.
Ugh.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 30, 2025 8:59 PM |
r33 Thirtysomething was about what today would be called "White People Problems." If it were a tv show today, as it was back then, it would be skewered and not acclaimed.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | September 30, 2025 9:25 PM |
Some of you never saw the show, or have very low comprehension. The Steadmans’ house was falling apart and unfinished. The business failed. The kids were the antithesis of TV kids. And they repeatedly addressed economic, class, and racial reality.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 30, 2025 9:36 PM |
R35 Their house wasn't "falling apart." They were renovating it. The kids were your typical bratty TV kids. There was nothing realistic about the show's interpretations of economic, class, and racial reality.
It was a weekly hour of faux angst.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | September 30, 2025 9:43 PM |
I remember the two gay guys in bed, and how controversial it was. What's so funny is that today two gay guys in bed on a network tv show would be ho-hum, but the fact that they were smoking cigarettes would have people screaming.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | September 30, 2025 9:46 PM |
They even looked like a bunch of smug cunts.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | September 30, 2025 9:48 PM |
There was no internet then so no spoilers and I was shocked when they killed off Gary.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | September 30, 2025 9:49 PM |
R36, they were renovating a dilapidated house. They were freaked out about having people over. They teetered on bankruptcy. The creators made the house look dirtier and less finished as the show went on, but certain bitter people were super triggered by this show no matter what.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | September 30, 2025 9:52 PM |
R40 I think I know who's triggered here. I'm glad you liked this unrealistic navel gazing show.
Somebody had to, I guess.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | September 30, 2025 9:56 PM |
Jamie Lee looks like Eddie Murray's "friend" Shalimar.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | September 30, 2025 10:03 PM |
R37: The story arc with Nancy’s cancer was probably the most realistic and least nauseating depiction of someone with cancer to that date. The arc with Michael’s father dying also was remarkable. The show could be annoying, but from time to time, it was far beyond typical tv and those episodes probably still hold up. TV a still doesn’t know what to do with death or serious illness.

No they didn't.

Someone put this post in the prune juice thread and I assume they meant to post it here.
_________
Even ABC doesn't want to revisit:
On January 8, 2020, ABC confirmed that a television pilot, which would serve as a sequel to the series, had been ordered. The pilot was never filmed, but was set to be directed by Zwick, written by Zwick and Herskovitz, and have four members of the original cast (Ken Olin, Mel Harris, Timothy Busfield and Patricia Wettig) reprising their roles.[6] In June 2020, ABC passed on the series.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | October 1, 2025 1:25 AM |
I love that it was posted in the prune juice thread!
by Anonymous | reply 47 | October 1, 2025 4:03 AM |
I didn't watch the series when it first aired. I was on vacation in Hawaii when the fourth season debuted with the episode about Nancy's cancer operation. I recall seeing an ad for it on TV. I only started watching it when it was repeated on syndication. There you got edited versions. So it was fun to see the whole episodes later with the all the trims restored. But even the DVD release has some music rights issue eg the music for the episode where Ellyn gets married they couldn't get the rights to "Going to the Chapel of Lovel" for the opening scene.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | October 1, 2025 4:06 AM |
Zwick made one of my favorite films, Glory.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | October 1, 2025 4:11 AM |
R46 Look at the dates. The pilot had been ordered in early 2020. Then Covid hit. There was the interest in doing it, but Covid stopped it, as it stopped many projects.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | October 1, 2025 6:55 AM |
It sounded like this pilot was centred on the children of the group rather than the cast of the original show.

Back in 2000, I accompanied a friend to his open audition for Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles and as I was sitting on the floor in the hallway with him waiting for his call, Melanie Mayron came in and sat down across from me. Without being a fangurl, I told her how much I loved her character on the show. She was very appreciative.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | October 1, 2025 11:29 PM |
Never watched it at all. I should give it a try now that I have time. Coworkers talked about it but I was too busy for TV back then.
