This "American gothic" film by Philip Ridley follows a young boy growing up in mid-century Idaho. His dysfunctional family life is troublesome, and through a series of childhood fantasies and misinterpretations, he comes to believe a nearby English widow (Lindsay Duncan) is a vampire killing off residents of their farming community. It is a beautiful, poetic, and dark film that has never really gotten its flowers. It was shot in Alberta, and has a very similar look to Terrence Malick's "Days of Heaven". Viggo Mortensen has a lead role as the young boy's adult brother. It was an early acquisition of Miramax and barely got released in the United States.
R1 there are also quite a few nice shots of a virile, hairy, shirtless Viggo throughout the movie. What a beauty he was.
