Neighbours (the Australian soap)
FreeVee has like the last twenty years of this soap up, and I needed something running in the background last night so went back to the beginning of 2021 and clicked play. What the hell, right?
Well now it’s the next day and I’ll be damned if I’m not hooked. This Shane love triangle is actually compelling.
I’m gonna have to go back to 2004 now.

I started watching when Amazon Freevee "saved" the show in 2023, and became instantly hooked. Haven't missed an episode since.
I, too, went back to watch some earlier years. There's a 24 hour "Neighbours: Looking Back" channel on Freevee that repeats 10-15 years or so back. I've enjoyed it. A lot of stuff comes out of left field and is wrapped up quickly, unlike US soaps that drag the same shit out forever.

I watched it ages ago when I lived oversees. It was after the time when Russell Crowe and Kylie had been cast members. It just seemed boring. I watched for a while, mystified that it seemed so old fashioned (no sex) and waiting for something to happen. It never did, so I lost interest. I half expected to see amnesia or some other old fashioned plot device. I guess there had been a trial, because there was occasional mention of one character's wife being in prison.
Home and Away was another, similar show. I wondered if it was a spinoff as it had all the same elements--catchy yet stupid theme, nothing much going on. The only memorable character was an old maiden aunt with money named Morag (great name for a biddie) who was always stirring the pot.

I like watching Neighbors. It's like a hot cup of cocoa. With politics in disarray and work stressful, the show is a nice diversion, almost wholesome where everybody supports everyone. It's nice to watch a show that isn't cynical about everything. And I like soaps, the endless sorrow of perfectly lovely people.
Killing David was a huge turn-off though.

I'm really impressed with how tight the storytelling is, and how appealing the cast is. I can't imagine going back and watching it all but I am in mid-2020 and I think I have found something the stream for at least the next year.
So many cuties on this show, too. Realistic cuties. Attainable cuties.

Amazon just announced that they won't renew the show beyond the already approved episodes. So it will go dormant again by year end. Amazon was probably not the ideal streamer anyway, and it was known that they won't hold any show for many years. But I enjoyed it last and for what it was. It was mindless but totally benign - something I am especially craving right now when I don't even want to watch news for even five minutes.

I’m so disappointed. I started watching, starting with the reboot season.
It’s better than any of the four remaining US soaps.
