Ru Paul's Drag Race Season 17!!!

DL's interest in the show has dwindled to practically zero, but I believe there's still a couple of us who watch faithfully. I think this year's cast is relatively strong, so maybe we'll get some good episodes. The only contestant I dislike so far is Kori King. She's very beautiful, but hearing that she's Plane Jane's sister makes me think she'll be yet another "shade in place of a personality" type that I can't bear. Nothing I've seen of her so far has changed my opinion.

My fellow TCM queens should enjoy Suzy Toot. Yes, yes, okay, her makeup is bad, but just like dozens of other Ru girls who came before her, she'll learn how to improve it. It bugged me a little that no one got her reference to Gold Diggers of 1933 on the runway. Hoping there are more young queens like Suzy who will keep that part of gay culture alive.

Drag Race UK is worth watching. The queens all have some talent and personality. US contestants no longer speak English, they speak "drag" and their only cultural knowledge is current population culture and drag/queer talking points.

I hate these season opening talent shows. Especially the lip syncs to “original” songs.

Haven't watched in about 10 years, but I do enjoy Tom & Lorenzo's recaps and I always follow these threads.

I hate-watch now. The talent competitions were pretty pathetic and don’t portend a good season. I already predict Snatch Game will be cringeworthy.

I only watch clips but they seem very young and most are amateur and fug. I do like Arietty for her clothes and makeup, and maybe she is sexually attractive? Can’t tell. As a season, it’s seeming very bottom of the barrel. But maybe it will get better once they get rid of all the terrible contestants.

The twists are overproduced. The rate a queen, the dunk tank. I am just waiting for Bob to lose his shit about no one going home. The pti stops are actually must watch now with Raven calling Hormona Lisa Sadness from inside out. There are very few queens who feel organic. They are all putting on some kind of show. Soon we will hear the tragic life stories of some to make us like them. I really like Onya Nerve though. She seems like a queen straight out of season 3. There are the usual delusional queens like Joella. Her taste, talent and drag are nowhere near the level she thinks they are. Lux's daughter, lingere or what ever her name is is just meh. The big black one, Kriss Kross or King Kong, whatever her drag name is, is unlikeable from the jump. I am waiting for the cast to get down to ten so I can learn their names.

I still watch but Australia and UK are shorter and more enjoyable these days. What I gave up on is All Stars wich is dreadful. (with the exception of the all winners one, which is probabaly the best of not only all stars but every iteration.)

Still learning who's who but RE some of the ones already coming out ahead. I like Suzy Toot as I like a smart queen with a good retro spin...I'm here for some flapper... I'm kinda good on 50s diner waitresses for now. Her makeup and clothing aren't blowing me away yet though. And Lexi Love is good too...girl has some miles on her, she has seen a few things. She's said almost as much but she's not a 22 yr old playing dress up.

Suzie Toot seems very talented but I predict her rigid "look" and makeup are going to get old fast and get her into trouble. Expect Michelle to comment about the makeup real soon and then it will be interesting to see if Toot is able to grow and show versatility in her looks.

Like with anything that becomes too popular, my interest in drag has dwindled to almost nothing.

For most gay men over a certain age, we've seen drag shows for decades and there were usually just a few local stars and it was fun - and they were needed as an MC for a lot of other shows/events.

Now there are far too many and it's of a questionable level of talent when so many look similar, shock value is gone, and at the end of the day, they're just lip-syncing.

I'm glad that they're able to make some money and tour - but I feel like drag has left the gay space, good or bad. It feels obligatory now.

I saw a clip with Salina Estitties saying that many of the Ru girls can’t get gigs anymore because there are too many girls right now.

It's the opposite in Europe I think, especially France, as they're having an all star season already, after 3 seasons.

R42, just keeping it real but this is one of the most unattractive casts in this show’s history. The only one I find attractive is Suzie Toot. Those eyes are adorable.

Joelle’s fat ass, including that fat face, is hard to look at and Kori King’s boulder size head is distracting.

R49 - I can believe that. There's also booking fees - if you've been moderately successful on Drag Race, then you can charge more...for a while. But these venues will only pay so much - and if they aren't bringing in the $$$ from drinks and covers, then it won't last long.

And let's face it - there are a lot of mediocre and low rent drag queens out there who will do anything for a buck and to get out of the house. Typically it's not very attractive men with skinny or fat bodies who don't get any attention out of drag. It's their way to get some attention and be someone else - which is fine, but innately sad as well.

The only really successful ones seem to be the ones who can also do stand-up and a long comedic act.

I just saw Miss Conception in Puerto Vallarta - and normally, I don't love drag shows. But she did 25 characters and costume changes in 75 minutes and sang a short song with each character and a lot of jokes. It was so entertaining and worth the money. She has a very good voice as well.

The smart girls branch off into reality shows, podcasts, fashion or other business ventures. There’s not enough venues that will book a drag show.

R53 - agreed, and that's what a lot of these queens don't realize. Showing up in drag, good makeup and lip-syncing isn't going to get you very far anymore - and that's all most of these queens know how to do.

You have to be an all-around entertainer and personality. I just looked up Bob the Drag Queen's site - he did a tour in Australia, NZ and is now doing shows all over Europe - Belgium, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Paris, Warsaw (???!!!).

Good for him but I'm surprised that people in some of those countries could even follow the humor and slang.

There are only a few break-out queens each season. You can count on fingers those who really have reached a-list status. Bianca, Bob, Alaska, Jinx, Willam. I would say right after season 11 things started to change. Queens were self-producing and editing themselves. It became more of Ru Paul's best friend race. That seems to be turning with queens willing to get nasty again.

Willam is A-list? Trixie and Katya are above him.

I can't believe (rather, I do, but it baffles me) that Trixie is so successful.

Trixie is smart- cosmetics line, DJing, Netflix's "I Like to Watch", YouTube channel, books, and her motel. With the motel, she filmed it, so it was a write off, and when she bought her house ($3 million!), she also filmed it, so it was a write off as well. Katya rode on her coattails and also bought a house, but not having the work ethic that Trixie had (also lapsing into drugs/alcohol), couldn't keep it.

Trixie took a 3 month sabbatical for the first time in her career last year, because she was working too much. A lot of queens don't take it as seriously as she does that this is a career and not a gigantic party.

Trixie also does, or did, music.

Jinkx Monsoon has to make serious bank too. Surprised she's not up there on the list.

R60 - Trixie 'opened' for Cyndi Lauper - she just DJ'd a set. Rather disappointing but I'm sure she got a nice check.

Trixie only owns part of that motel - she has 3 other investors and co-owners, which is smart.

It's wild how successful she's become because in the first few episodes on her season, I thought she was OK but nothing special. Then she really blew open the door.

She was smart to strike while the iron was hot. She had to have worked with some management team to get so much of that set up. I like her, so I'm glad she's doing well.

I started watching again after not seeing the show at all for a few years.

Don’t they do two seasons per calendar year? One in late summer and another in winter? Or is it once a year? There are so many versions of the show and something always pops up. It’s hard to miss the show if it won’t completely go away.

I was told a story by someone who was a former close collaborator with a RPDR gal. This gal did well on her season but didn't win; she's also a creative hard worker always creating her own jobs as well as just touring/doing gigs. She was shocked to discover that she had grossed over a million bucks in her first year and a half after appearing on Drag Race. (Note: this was about 11 years ago or so). This same queen had this conversation with Bianca who asked her, "well, how much you got now and how much you have invested for future?" and when the queen admitted "not that much" Bianca gave her the riot act and told her to get herself a smart financial advisor and start doing some smart financial planning.

Bianca is worth a lot more than $4. Roy is VERY smart and very disciplined. Bianca is constantly doing world tours in huge theaters and is easily worth much more than $4m.

Trixie and Bianca are both worth several million bucks, easily.

Hormona is growing on me big time. She is quite good at subtle shade and has a pretty great sense of humor and can take a joke.

Yeah, I'd much rather see Arietty go than Hormona, though they'll both be gone before the last few episodes. Onya is really good, but I don't like her personally. I really like Susy and Lexi.

After all these years and all these casts, why in hell are we still hearing the same old gripes about girls who aren't "pretty" succeed? All of the most successful queens, the ones who have made big money and have careers outside of the drag ecosystem (Jinks, Bianca, Trixie, Katya, Bob) have unconventional or highly stylized looks. But I hear A-list Ru girls take shots at them regularly for not being conventionally fishy looking, even the ones who go on their various shows and slop sugar all over them. Meanwhile, the "pretty" girls will never achieve anything higher than Werq the World, and they'll forever look at Jinks and Trixie and moan, "Why are they doing better than me? They can't even death drop and they never wear gowns!"

Suzy and Butthole have a much bigger chance of leaving a mark on the world that the girls who are pretty and nothing else.

There was something vaguely unlikable about Hormona Lisa so I'm not unhappy to see her go this week. Her drag wasn't up to scratch this week.

I actually thought Ru might have done a double elimination this week and I would imagine a double is coming up.

I really like Acacia Forgot but I think her days are numbered. We got quite a decent VPL from Acacia this week in the gray shorts - not bad. After that incident with Onya and Lexi - I have totally changed my mind about Onya. Any normal person would have immediately engaged with Lexi (even if Lexi was worked up) and explained it was a complete accident and misunderstanding and she was sorry and it would have diffused the entire situation instantly. What a coward with no spine. Onya turned out to be. Gross. She can't go soon enough for my taste.

Yeah, the lipsyncs were both pretty bad, and they both should have gone home. And Onya has proved to be a not very nice person. 2 strikes and you're out. Butthole isn't a great Drag Queen, but he's cute and was much better in the lipsync than I would have thought. Hope she stays a while and Lana, Onya and Arietty go next. I considered Onya to be one of my favorites along with Susie Toot but after the way she handled the situation with Lexi. Yeah I wouldn’t be disappointed if she got eliminated. I’ve always believed that you should get in front of situations like that and just owe up to it. That’s what Onya should’ve done. The moment Lexi came to that room sincerely upset and stated the issue. Very disappointing.

That's exactly what I thought Onya should have done R148. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I also considered Onya as a favorite and a possibility for the win. But I don't see how Onya can repair the damage done with fans. Like R146 says - Onya has proved to be not a very nice person. RuPaul will eventually find out about it and he doesn't like that sort of shit. Ru is tough as nails and never takes any shit but he's always fair.

This season is really bad. Sorry but it just is. Glad for Snatch Game next week but there are no stars in this cast. Also TV Line just dinged RuPauls Global All Stars on it's WORST list. I'm also a little pissed that Rupaul teamed with Fake Trans Dylan Mulvaney. Maybe it's all downhill now?

Oh that's right R150. I totally forgot about that. Onya is downright nasty and acted like she had done nothing wrong in both situations.

I sooooooort of get where Onya was coming from: Lexi came in way hot (drag queen DRAMA energy) and there's not really any good way to deal with that.

But still. She's either a sociopath or there's some trauma behind Onya's impassivity. I suspect at some point we'll see the walls break down and we'll get some vulnerability. (At least I hope so, 'cuz Onya's definitely one of my faves. Smart and funny and one of the few gals this season with any kind of star quality.)

Also - I'm sorry but it would have been so easy to totally change the situation by stepping forward, getting Lexi's attention and calmly explaining what had happened. It would have diffused the situation. Unless they cut it out - Onya didn't even apologize until the next morning. She was irrationally defensive and attacked other people during the conflict. But this season, it's suddenly no big deal. This comes from the same twisted logic of Lexi's Snatch Game being so horrible that they put her in the top. Can we just come out and admit the eliminations are based on which queen makes more interesting television rather than the quality of their performances?

They seem determined to paint Suzy as the next Alexis Michele, but I don't think she's anywhere near that level of delusion and manipulation. Suzy's game playing seems good natured enough, and she eats shit when things don't go well for her. I can't be mad at her.

Jewels is very put together, but she seems overconfident in her abilities and continues to take on big challenges and fail. Lexi is just a nut case.

The only two I half-way like are Onya and Lexi. Onya because she has some talent, and Lexi because she seems like a bit of a train wreck.

Onya is a typical black-bullshit drag queen who has nothing new to add to anything, constantly and tediously using the tired black-drag playlist to push her "dignity," "sass," and victimhood.

She's a cunt. She refused to admit she fucked up Lexi's costume because it wasn't in her "storyline," and of course the producers and Charles hold onto anyone who can squeeze a prideful pose out of being very unspecial.

Lexi won't win, but she should. She has the only authenticity of all the contestants, has the best looks, knows fashion, is a good king of mess, and hasn't fucked anyone else over.

The entire cast except for her are derivative, immature, and boring. Toot is stupid and deluded. Jewels is too costumed and fucks her makeup. Sam is one-note. I was watching a season three episode with Manila and Yara Sofia and the ultimate winner, Raja, which I disagreed vehemently with her winning.

My god, the outfits they created, 3 of them, each, were absolutely stunning. Even tho the judges didn’t like the 2 outfits by Yara and the other queen, they were still head and shoulders above what the new queens are creating now. The outfits had to be made of paper money.

I’ve been skipping right past the challenges lately and only tune in to see the runway show and the critiques.

I find the challenges cringe-worthy. I feel second-hand embarrassment for them all and I can’t watch.

Ru wants the remaining few to really open up and show us their true personalities but, sadly, on some level, I don't think we really care. Just show us pretty dresses and sensational outfits and bitchy comments. Except, nowadays, bitchy attitudes and comments would be considered mean. 🤷🏻‍♀️

There is a fine line between having a rapier wit and being just a mean bitch, I guess.

Lana sucks, but I also can’t stand Sam Starr.

Just to say something positive, I thought Jewels' bio for Suzie was funny and accurate without being obvious. I like that little gal.

This remaining cast are all talented. I also am fascinated by their bonding and banter.

Kameron Michaels was in the bottom three times in a row and won all three and ended up in the top four. She lip synced six times in a row only losing to Aquaria in the final lipsync.

The editing probably helps but it was clear who the best team was watching this at home!

Actually, Jewels' dance was one of the better ones, but her monolgue wasn't all that great. Suzy's monlogue was pretty good, but her dance was a snooze.

I kept thinking throughout that nobody should go home. They can’t send anybody home this week! It would be heartbreaking, especially if a parent would (mistakenly) take responsibility for having their kid go home.

I was glad my gut feeling was correct. Jewels seemed to have given the better lip-sync, tho.

Suzy’s mom looked really frail and Mr Salchicha was having a really good time. Onya’s dad was really handsome.

With a couple more years of experience and wisdom she might have won. I was tickled to read that she's making "FUCK SUZY TOOT" t-shirts, and she's sent one to both Trinity and Willam, who have been shredding her on their recap shows, and also Lexi, as a joke.

Suzie had a not great lack of humility moment or two but they're all delusional. Twitter seemed upset about her departure and a lot of talk about how the other girls sniped at her all season. She was really emoting in the lip sync, but yes, didn't match the Vegas theme. Suzie has had some great looks and some that aren't on the peak level of a few of the remaining ones. Ru laughed about her not switching it but Suzie did rocker once or twice. Not completely fair.

It has to be Onya. Or I'm clueless and it's Jewels or someone. Sam Star is good.. but so polished. I don't find her especially witty or clever. I'm moved by Lexie's story but Onya has incredible stage presence.

I think Onya will not win it despite doing so well this season. She has gotten a lot of backlash over her being scheming (the lexi thing, the jewels thing) and if you notice Jewels has been a confessional darling all season. I think Jewels is going to win it much like Saphira vs Nymphia.

Lexi has some awesome looks and is a fine performer, but everything is so....dysphoric.

I just see the trauma and of course the modern cure for it, seeking to "transition". Lexi is seeking a transition to a happier, less damaged person it seems.

I think Jewels will be the upset and quite frankly, I’m good with that. Onya has showed her ass a couple of times that I can’t get over while Jewels showed up as a very entertaining and positive force more and more as the season progressed.

From what I have seen on this season - Lexi has had a very tough life and has been in some very sad and difficult situations for prolonged periods of time. Yes she's a hot mess but many people like Lexi don't even survive. As gay people we should understand this and empathize with this as many of us, or other gay people we know, have had similar experiences and been in similar situations with drug and alcohol abuse and the plethora of issues that come with addiction and the mental health issues we experience as gays - such as rejection, isolation, othering, ostracization, vilification, continual disdain from general society etc.

At the end of the day - hot messes make good TV.

There isn't one contestant who I feel I "know" as a performer (except for maybe Onya and Suzie.) Lexi is hitting the "emotional" pedal too hard every fucking episode. Sam and Jewels might as well be cartoon characters. (I especially loathe Jewels. If she wins, I may be done.)

It's very possible it is all because this is the youngest cast ever, but I'm also concerned they are now being told to amp things up because the straight white women who now are the main audience for the show adore they GAYNESS of it all.

It seemed like Suzie did enormous preparation. She ended up being the most memorable of the cast, so kudos Toots.

Kori was third of the three in that semi-final. The only reason she was chosen as the winner was to guarantee a win for Suzy. I think Butthole was the rightful winner, and would have been a worthy opponent for Suzy. And Miss Kori should realize that her Suzy imitation is not the read she thinks it is. Winning Drag Race is nice, but the real success comes from selling yourself and creating a fan base that will elevate your career. Burning your post-show attention on Suzy is just free advertising for Suzy. But just like her sister Plane Jane, her whole persona is gimmicks and insults swirling around a void of an identity.

I'm glad Lucky got a small redemption. She seems to be really creative and probably has more to offer. I'd like to see her and Butthole on a future season of All-Stars. I'm hopeful I'll never see Acacia, Joella, or Hormona ever again.

If Suzie had worn that wig/outfit for the Vegas Show challenge (except for the awful clown makeup) she could very well have been in the final four. That wig looked great on her.

Any thoughts about the new format of All-Stars 10? They're doing an elimination tournament featuring 18 queens. I think having two queens compete head-to-head might be interesting. Maybe some sort of mini-challenge, then a runway and a lip sync battle, then the loser's gone forever. Two or three matches per hour? Might be fun. Might be a mess. We'll find out in three weeks.

I knew it! They were determined to give Onya Nurve the title no matter what. Jewels Sparkles’ final lip sync tonight was so much better than Onya’s. Oh well.

That finale was so underwhelming! I hate how rinky-dink the studio finales feel after the glorious frenzy of the big-theater events. And I totally agree that the result was preordained, because Ms. Nurve did not surve. I really like her, but she's just not a STAR! if ya know what I mean. She dominated early because it was such a weak season overall, then her arc was overtaken by the late-season growth shown by both Sam and Jewels, who have more natural charisma.* The finale laid bare Onya's limitations.

RANDOM THOUGHTS:

- I was wondering why Jewels was wearing all black when she had clocked Arrietty for doing the same during the Lalaparusical (or whatever it was called) because it doesn't show up well on the RPDR set. But that made the reveals all the more effective. (She totally won that lipsync, y'all.)

- Arrietty was smart to go the prosthetic route; I now have such a negative pavlovian reaction to her face.

- It was wild to see Mark from the current season of "The Amazing Race" shaking his cute little booty up there.

*I don't think that's a coincidence given that they are both part of Trinity's family; she's talked about how important it is to make the producers think THEY'RE the ones unlocking the talents you already know you have.

Jewels in that pale blue dress reminded me of Ariana Grande, which Jewels could imitate flawlessly. Do it Jewels, while the Wicked iron is hot!

I love Jewels, but she absolutely did not win the lip sync. The reveals were frantic and ill-timed, and her energy did not match up with the song.

Overall, it was a weak finale, but a great winner. This is the first season I've watched in a couple years—when did they start doing the finales on the regular main stage instead of in a proper theater? It made the whole thing feel so lackluster and small.

Also, I watched the LaLaPaRuza yesterday as well. I wouldn't say I'm a huge Suzie fan, but she ate that episode up.

I would have loved for either of them to have dropped in the official choreo you see in clips online. Now that would have been a performance.

I also thought Onya did better. Did she have the moves that Jewels had? No, but what she did was surprising, and Jewels was doing much of the same stuff she had done before. We were actually surprised that Jewels ended up in the top two. I presumed it was going to be Sam, but I was hoping for Lexi, who would have killed in the lipsync with all those bizarre costume stuff. Ah well, I don't love Onya, but she definitely deserved it.

I understand that they consider the entire season's performances when choosing the winner, so I can't be mad about Onya winning. But for my money Jewels did the best custom song number, had the best finale outfits (her pink intro look with the wide, wide skirt was so pretty), and won the final lip sync. I hope to see Jewels on a future All Stars season.

Jewels was spectacular, that first pink outfit? She looked like a fucking Latina Barbie Doll. Her dance number was super fun and energetic. Her lip-sync was fun and exciting as well.
