What were they like, and what impressed you the most about them? How did they look or act differently from their public person when you saw them in person?
Which famous men have you met or seen in person?

Leo DiCaprio (super nice, huge entourage - including Lukas Haas), Adam Sandler (great dad), Conan O'Brien (self-deprecating - so not so different), Alec Baldwin (very sweet to his "fat pig" daughter), Harrison Ford (exactly how you'd think), Richard Benjaman (tiny feet), George Segal (even tinier feet), Eric McCormack (tries too hard), Larry King (surprisingly coherent), Patton Oswalt (exactly like his public persona)

I saw Brad Pitt (kind of orange, like Trump orange)
Steve Martin walking down the street (had a permanent grin on his face like he wanted to be thought of as nice by those he passed.)
John Stossel (kind of looked me up and down as if he didn't like what I was wearing.)

John Hartman walking to a gate at LAX holding a big bouquet of roses in the middle of the night. I said you're 30 minutes late dude, I'm the only one here unless those roses are for me. He just laughed and walked away.

He was loaded with charisma in person. My mother just about died of embarrassment but my dad was amused.

Poor David White. His life really ended when his son was killed in the Lockerbie bombing/crash. Their ashes are together in the same niche at Hollywood Forever.

I've seen several presidents, and several presidential candidates in person while they were running. Bush Sr. was tall and unremarkable; Michael Dukakis was short and unremarkable. The only one who i have ever seen who radiated charisma was Bill Clinton, who was like a beacon in a crowd (he spoke at my grad school graduation in 1996, and walked right past me). I've never seen anything quite like it.

That's a good story. That actor is on par with the guy played Mr. Robinson in The Graduate. "Plastics ..."

I pass d by Hank Azaria once in Central Park. He looked pretty exactly the same as he does onscreen—I recognized him immediately. Seemed completely normal. He was by himself, talking to someone on his cell phone.

I saw Jon Voight in the Dallas Fort Worth airport. He was standing in the first class line, waiting to get on a plane. He looked tall, was wearing a gray suit, was smiling, and was looking around the airport. He seemed like he would've been okay if someone came up to him and said hello, I loved you in Midnight Cowboy.

I shook hands with Steve McQueen on the set of "The Thomas Crown Affair" and later had lunch with him, courtesy of craft services.
I interviewed Catfish Hunter at home plate at Yankee Stadium before a game.
I chatted with Brooks Robinson in an airport lounge at Baltimore-Washington Airport.
I interviewed Mike Love of the Beach Boys and he invited me to get up on stage with the group for their first set at the Yale Bowl in New Haven.
I spent an afternoon with actor George Kennedy and he autographed my DVD of "Charade," the movie he made that he said was his favorite.
I spent an hour with Mark Hamill and we talked all about the "Star Wars" movies. Later, I played miniature golf with him.
I chatted with Tab Hunter at a book signing in NYC.

Paul Newman rented videos from me in the late '80s while he was in town filming Mr and Mrs bridge. Joanne was with him as well. Paul of course was shorter than I expected very thin. Was kind of funny they were picking out a video to watch and she picked up Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Paul said I don't want to watch any God damn Zemekis movie and made me laugh out loud and he turned around and looked at me and kind of half smiled.

I met the late Peter Tork at an AA meeting in Storrs, CT. Turns out his father was an economics prof at UCONN and that's where Peter grew up. He was very handsome in person, lanky and lean. Tall.
I'd gone up to him after the meeting and said, "You look [bold]just[/bold] like Peter Tork from the Monkees." He grinned and said, "That's because I [bold]am[/bold] Peter Tork from the Monkees!" I laughed and we just started talking. We hung out and talked for the entire afternoon. He was kind and sweet and truly brilliant, in spite of the character he played in the TV show. He offered me and my gf-at-the-time backstage tickets/passes to the next Monkees' performance, but I turned him down -- I was constantly overwhelmed with all the schoolwork I had. But he seemed like a great, stand-up guy. The photo I attached is the way he looked when I met him, although I met him in the mid-90s.
BTW, he told me that, in spite of his being a clean & sober alcoholic, it was actually Davy Jones who was the worst drunk, and that's why he died young.

I worked in Manhattan for 40 years so saw a LOT of celebrities on the street. male and female.
A few nice sightings that come to mind from decades ago…
John Travolta around the time of Urban Cowboy, patiently signing autographs outside the Conde Nast building. I stood to the side just to watch. He would sign for each person and then hand it to them and look right at them and smile. Gave off a nice vibe. Beautiful blue eyes.
I saw some of the filming of Arthur on Fifth Ave by the Plaza Hotel. During a break in filming Dudley Moore was sitting in a chair getting makeup retouched by the makeup lady and he scrunched his nose to make a face at her. A cute moment that somehow stood out to me. (I also saw Liza during that filming.)
Alec Baldwin walking down Madison Avenue in a long black coat, back in his young, gorgeous days. Incredible blue eyes.
For the Peter Tork fan above, I met Micky Dolenz in person once, nice guy.

Jude Law. Saw him on Fire Island Pines (with his wife and children). Charismatic and speaking loudly on the dock so everyone knew who he was.
Billy Eichner. Also on Fire Island. Walking alone along the beach at sunset looking lost in his thoughts.
Zane Phillips. Not as bowled over by his looks as I thought he'd be. Was kissing someone in a LA bar who was not Froy last spring (I think Froy might have been there too though)
John Malkovich in Covent Garden looking normal and completely ignoring the many stares he was attracting.
Jeff Goldblum walking through an airport. Smiley and chilled.
Timothee Chalamet. Getting a Covid test in a HK urgent care early 2021. Masked but still instantly recognizable thanks to his eyes and hair.
John Barrowman. Sleazy vibe and 'look at me' hunger to his eyes.

I met Armie Hammer in July 2018 when he was doing previews for that play he did called “Straight White Men.” I didn’t think the play was that great. However, I stuck around after the play finished to receive autographs and handshakes from the male actors including Armie Hammer. It’s strange thinking about it now in retrospect.
Then, three months ago, I was an extra for “Marty Supreme,” the upcoming A24 film. I’m in costume dressed up as a 1950s army lieutenant given it’s a period film. We’re shooting this homecoming scene and guess who walks in the room but none other than Timothée Chalamet. He was in costume as well. He’s wearing a navy blue sports coat and khaki-color trousers. His hair (obviously) is styled 1950s and wearing glasses appropriate to the period. I didn’t go up to him, not wanting to ruin his work process and remaining professional the whole shoot. I was in another scene later that was shot late at night. We were sitting in this model airplane when later into shooting the scene, Timothée is there again.
Here I am, a guy from Wayne County, NY now an extra for an upcoming A24 film in Farmingdale, Long Island and I’m sitting 5 feet across from Timothée Chalamet. I’m not a fanboy though, but it was an experience I will never forget.

Joe Namath looked old and haggard, was not at all friendly despite being paid to stand there and be friendly.
Sat at the next table over from Billy Crystal having brunch with his family, trying hard not to be recognized. It worked; neither my husband nor mother and sister recognized him.
John DeLancie was surprisingly more handsome in person than on TV, but the meet-and-greet experience was meh.
When I lived in SF and was politically active, met Gavin Newsom when he was mayor. Years later at an event for his run for governor, I shook his hand and he called me by my name and blew my mind.
Sat next to Grant Show on a cross-country flight when he was dating Daphne Zuniga (I think that was her name) who was sitting across the aisle. I offered to switch but he demurred. Nice guy.
My most memorable celebrity experience, however, was when I was consulting to a video game company connected to Paramount and they wanted an on-site meeting so I went to the lot on Melrose. Afterward, the team I was working with knew I was a Trekkie, so took me to the commissary for lunch and it was surreal. They were filming the first TNG movie so most of the cast was there, and filming on Voyager had begun and most of that cast was there, many in costume. I tried to play it cool, but being so close you could recognize their voices around you was unsettling. My only disappointment was Sir Patrick was not there, but my main contact sent me an autographed headshot of him with a note of thanks (from the contact, not Stewart) a few weeks later.

Peter Gallagher crossing 96th st. , short, big head.
Robert Redford, stunning, also big head, tall but too skinny. Did I mention stunning?

Lidia Bastianich: My family has had several dinners and parties at her restaurants. She's absolutely lovely.
Used to work on Capitol Hill, so I interacted with senators. Most were kind and down to earth. Ted Kennedy was aloof. George H. W. Bush was very nice guy, but he did have a longterm affair with the woman who ran his office on the Hill.
I encountered Trump in the late 80s. It was after he bought The Plaza. I went to lunch there in the Oak Room with my Mom. He walked in and went around each table greeting the diners. I stood up when he came over. I had read in the tabloids that he was a germaphobe who didn't like shaking hands. He asked us if everything was okay and stuff like that.

I've posted about this before, but I was friends and went to school at different times in my life with both Peter Krause from 6FU and Donal Logue from Gotham.
Peter Krause (who went by "Pete" in those days) was very handsome and funny, and I had a big crush on him in h.s. (He had an unbelievable ass--he was a varsity gymnast who specialized in the pommel horse.) I lost touch with him years ago.
Donal Logue was a very, very nice guy, and still very much is. He was considered very cool by all the guys in my dorm. He's very bright and very funny. I think he now runs a trucking company in Oregon, at least as a side gig.
I also was once for a time casual friends with the director Michael Showalter (who directed "the Eyes of Tammy faye" and "Hello My Name is Doris"), who can be very funny but who rarely smiled when I knew him. (I was in graduate school when he was an undergraduate.) He was very handsome back then, but has since mostly lost his looks. Through him I once briefly met other members of "The State" (his MTV comedy group after college), like Janeane Garofalo (very nice and shy), and Michael Ian Black (left no impression on me).
I also knew only in passing Mark Feuerstein from "Royal Pains" (who, before we knew each other, once made fun of my baseball cap to a friend--he was really an asshole and I never liked him--he was really stuck on himself) and also Morgan Spector from "The Gilded Age" (very handsome, pretty nice guy, and a leftist in politics). neither of them would likely remember me, but the other three men above would (and I am very vaguely still in touch with Logue on social media).

I've got a lot but one that comes to mind is Phil Hartman just before SNL. Nice guy, and unlike many comedians felt no need to be "on" when he wasn't performing. Gentle nature. He smoked a pipe and made ships in bottles in his spare time, which seemed like old-timey hobbies for a guy in his 30s in the entertainment industry.
Never met his notorious wife.
Another one is DW Moffett at the height of his youthful good looks. Very down-to-earth guy whose interests were the stage and character roles. I think his handsomeness limited himself in the latter, but he never, ever wanted to be a big movie star. A case where losing his good looks actually helped him in the career he wanted.

A friend and I (both women) ran into the sex pest and alleged rapist, William Kennedy Smith, while we were out walking her dog on Oakdale near Broadway in Chicago. This was about 20 years ago. He owned a town house by my friend's building. He was with a petite blonde female who my friend said was a family member.
My friend was friendly with the woman who introduced us. Yeah, everything you'd expect. He could not make eye contact and a "hi" was barely uttered, head facing the ground. The creep vibes were off the register.
I knew he lived on Oakdale because another friend dated a barista at the Seattle's Best on the corner. WKS got him fired because he said "Do you ever get the comment that you look like WKS?'
He was a physician at the Rehab Institute at the time. I can't imagine his social skills were any better with patients.

A couple of gay ones:
Bryan Batt at an event. He sat down next to me with a plate of food and started chatting away like we'd known each other for years. Yes, a bit queeny but salt-of-the-earth Southern man.
Edward Hibbert on the smoking patio of a gay bar in Vancouver. I assumed he was filming up there. I had sidled up to a group of guys not realizing he was part of it. Mannerisms just like Gil Chesterton but not at all snobbish and I forget what we were talking about but it had nothing to do with Hollywood — just a random conversation you might have in a situation like that.

Jennifer Coolidge in Provincetown. She performed at Town Hall. I saw her the next day walking in the West End. No one on the street except us. I waved and smiled and she did the same. Seemed warm and friendly. She was thinner then and absolutely stunning. Not cartoonish like she sometimes looks. She was wearing a caftan.
Hillary Clinton at a speaking event. My boss knows her well and got my spouse and I a backstage meet up. There were a bunch of people there meeting her and getting pic with her. When it was our turn, all I could think to say was "I love you." She laughed, put her arm around me and we took the picture. It was about a year after she lost to Trump. Her body is blobby and she clearly doesn't pay it much mind. It's just something to prop up her brain.
Sharon Gless: I've told this story on DL before. I interviewed her for a magazine article several years ago. She was so awesome and worth of DL worship. She was hilarious and very dishy. Told me that Cybil Shephard told Peter Bogdonovich not to hire her for some reason- told him Sharon is "a cunt." Told me so many fun stories. She absolutely loves Robert Wagner. Helen Mirren saw her on stage in London in Misery. Afterward, went backstage and kissed Sharon's feet. Told her that if it weren't for Cagney and Lacy there wouldn't have been Prime Suspect. Suggested they have a crossover episode between the shows - a special where they're investigating a cross-country crime. Sharon brought to C&L producer (who she loathed), who vetoed it.
Sandra Day O'Conner. Interviewed her for a work project at the Supreme Court. She was retired and ancient. During filming, she was super serious and strident--didn't laugh at my little jokes and seemed immune to my charm. She terrified me. But, after filming, I asked her to take a photo with me. She turned into a completely different person! Warmed up and told me stories. We were in a room with portraits of some of the chief justices. She pointed out the one of William Rehnquist, who she served with. He had stripes painted on the sleeves of his robe. She told me that he did that after seeing a performance of Pirates of Penzance. Said they used to date before she married. I think he proposed to her. Also told a few stories about Scalia, focusing on his sense of humor. Seemed to like him a lot.

here's an off-the-wall one. I took my parents to Vegas about 20 years ago. There first trip there. We were eating at the Flamingo and a guy that looked a lot like Elvis was sitting at the next table. I recognized him as the Elvis impersonator in the Tom Cruise movie The Firm. He played Holly Hunter's ex-husband.
I normally would disturb "a celebrity," but I suspect he was a celebrity who wanted to be recognized. So I asked him if he was in The Firm and he absolutely lit up. Asked if I could take a pix with him and he jumped out of his seat. I gave my mom the camera to take out pix.
After that was done, my mom gave him the camera and asked him to take a pic of my parents and me. He was stunned and confused as was I. but he took the pix. Afterward I asked my mom if she was crazy (a rhetorical question). That he's an Elvis impersonator and why would she ask him to take a pic of us. She said, "Oh! I thought he was a friend of yours."
Anyway, he looks a lot like fat Elvis, or did so then.

More than I can count, but here are some highlights:
Sondheim (surprisingly self-effacing) Roseanne (batshit crazy and terrifying Angela Bassett (down to earth and kind) B.D. Wong: thoroughly nice person Gina Gershon: domineering David Mamet: complete asshole Bridget Fonda: sweet and real John Waters: standoffish, but I can’t blame him. Divine: asked me if I had any drugs. June Havoc: nuts, but she had good reason. Edie Beale (need I say more?)
I could go on but that’s enough for now.

Angela Bassett seems like a cool lady.

Time to reiterate the thread's title:
Which famous MEN have you met or seen in person?
by Anonymous | reply 80 | January 10, 2025 8:33 PM |
Lots. A few I've posted about here (mostly in real time).
Colto - Adorable!
John Wesley Shipp - Very nice and very sexy
Mark-Paul Gosselaar - Reserved, quiet/sexy
Brandon Routh - Amazing chest/nice
Joey Fatone - Warm, kind, sweet, highly fuckable....total husband material
Barry Bostwick - we shit-talked Susan Sarandon
Who do you want to know about? Chances are I've met them professionally or personally.

Sondheim and Teddy Kennedy

Was in NYC for 25th anniversary of Stinewall. Gay games taking place at same time. A friend and I were in Cental Park heading for the big fields where some of the games were taking place.
John Kennedy Jr and Darrell Hannah rollerbladed next to us. There was a bit of a traffic jam on the path so they had to slow down long enough for me to get a good look. He was almost too handsome. And very nice calves. I was impressed that he was skating into a sea of gay men.

R81, I've chatted with John Wesley Shipp on social media. He seems like a really cool guy
by Anonymous | reply 84 | January 10, 2025 8:50 PM |
It’s crazy reading these posts, that living in NYC for 26 years, I’ve met or passed by most of the guys mentioned in this thread. I worked in lixury retail too, so you interact on a certain level with a number of stars in their everyday lives.
I remember seeing a very distinguished handsome guy come into the store once in a long gray cashmere coat. It was just before closing. He was walking arm in arm with an equally attractive woman. They made quite the couple. Then I realized it was Matthew McConaughey and his wife.
I was walking in front of this guy with his young daughter and her friends listening to their conversation. You can tell he was doing his best to entertain them. At one point I heard the daughter say, “Can I feel your muscle daddy?” I looked back and watched him flex while she grabbed it. It was Clive Owen and his young daughter at the time.
David Duchovny is super sexy in person.

Late dinner at Joe Allen a few years ago. Table to the left was Christian Borle, still in a bit of stage makeup, trying to appear chill, but also looking like he was hoping someone would recognize him.
Table to the right was the little one from Penn & Teller. The one who doesn’t talk. But he was being quite chatty with the two twinks at his table. Is he a homosexual?

Many years ago at a restaurant in LA, actor Bill Nighy was having dinner with Dominick Dunne a few tables over. My friend went over after their meal was over to get Bill’s autograph for her son. I met Bryan Batt at his store in New Orleans. I was a huge Mad Men fan and this was not long after his character was written off. I really tried not to be a jerk and gush…but I did say that I hoped his character would return at some point. He was gracious, but I got the feeling he didn’t think that would ever happen…he was right.

Liam Neeson, just a regular guy. Colin Farrell friendly, but not overly so. I approached Saoirse Ronan who was polite; but Brendan Gleeson was with her and acted like I was a pfile for approaching a teen; i felt very embarrassed. Larry Hagman was brilliant; stetson and all. Tom Jones very quiet and smiley; like he was amused but didnt feel he had to do anything to impress. Ant and Dec are very down to earth and eager to be liked. McBongo; sat beside him in airport; low key; polite. Simon Cowell is aman of few words and tiny; but friendly. Paul Mccartney, very willing to chat music. Mickey Rooney was just not interested in anyone talking to him; i was in one of those hotel twirly door exits and it looked likehe may have gone around 20 times before escaping. He exited; i was stunned and said Oh my God...and before i finished my sentence ( with, its Mickey Rooney) he just shuffled around me and kept going, in a flap. All very friendly people....Conchita Wursr is The Best. Genuine. David Furnish was very friendly. Ive met lots of reality tv stars who have come and gone and they were the unfriendliest...especially while still in the competition; If you approacg people with respect and when its suitable, they are all nice. I'll give mickey a pass, he looked so over it all..and died that year.

Played basketball with ADAM SANDLER. No funny personality like we always see in interviews. He was just a normal person.
Played basketball with JAMIE FOXX. Nothing interesting to say.
Hung out in locker room with JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE and SNOOP DOGG. JT and I talked. He seemed nice. Snoop and I were alone in locker room and when he left, he said “Later, nephew.” I guess he’s my uncle now. Played basketball with these two also. I was the only person who would challenge Snoop for rebounds. JT let me take the final shot since I had an awful game and then I missed it. Embarrassing. Played opposite FRANKIE MUNIZ and ICE CUBE too but didn’t interact much. At these games, I also met DEAN CAIN who is really sweet and TERRY CREWS who was also nice.
DONALD FAISON came up to ME at a movie theater. He was excited to see me. That impressed my brother who was with me.
Took MVP bus to run the NYC Marathon with SEAN ASTIN. I finished the marathon 30 minutes ahead of him.
I was a longtime stalker of NATHAN LANE. Became friends for a short time and even had dinner together. That’s all I’m saying about that.
Met STEVEN SPIELBERG at a fundraiser. He said he liked my work!
Walked past DUSTIN HOFFMAN on the street.
Met PARKER POSEY at airport after Sundance. She was nice.
Worked with DAVID BOREANAZ, of course. As an actor, he was quiet and respectful. As a director, he was a lot of fun. So nice and very creative. He should direct a movie. He has talent.
Shared a hot tub with just WENTWORTH MILLER. Nothing interesting to say. We just talked. Also shared a hot tub with just GERARD BUTLER. We talked about acting and our careers.
At a party, I talked with SIMON COWELL, RANDY JACKSON, and RYAN SEACREST. Simon was nice. He wanted to leave the party though. Randy was as fun as you’d think. Ryan said they should have celebrity idol and I should be on it. He was such a normal guy. No gay vibes by the way..
Worked on same show as STEPHEN FRY and RYAN O’NEAL. I loved Ryan. He gave me a fighting tutorial, Stephen and I are friends. Great guy. We really connect because we’re both gay and bipolar. He said he wanted me to be his boyfriend, He’s happily married now.
Had a brief fling with BARNEY FRANK. Great guy. Funny and smart.
Friends with STEPHEN SCHWARTZ. He has emailed me every year on my birthday for over 20 years now. Very nice guy. I went out with him before Wicked opened on Broadway. He had no idea how it would be received. He said it will either be or hit or it’ll be another show like Children of Eden and The Bakers Wife where he’ll keep trying to make it work regionally,
Those are but a few. AMA

When I lived in New York City in the 80s and 90s I saw quite a few famous men at the Tower Video Store in the East Village/NoHo neighborhood.
Saw Nick Cage and was amused at the person behind the register who commented that he looked like Nick Cage. Tall wearing a black leather jacket and so obviously Nick Cage
I saw Matt Damon standing online with what I assume was his girlfriend or wife. I was a few people behind him and believe it or not there was a full-size cardboard cutout of him very nearby for I believe the movie Ocean's 11 He was very low key.
Saw Ben Stiller flipping through magazines wearing a denim jacket and looking very much like he looks on film. I wanted to say something to him, but I didn't I think he's very cute.
As I was walking out of the store Jason Patric was walking in. This was around the time he did Cat on a Hot Tin Roof on Broadway. He had very striking blue eyes and he cruised me.
At the Museum of Modern Art Store, I was looking at a book. looked up, turned to my right and there was Dennis Quaid standing there looking at me. When I left the museum, I saw Dennis and Meg Ryan getting into a cab with their young son. Dennis looked good his hair was shaggy and not combed back as it usually is off his face he looked very young, and he was young at that time.
At a performance of Chicago on Broadway I saw Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward during intermission. What got my attention was Paul Newman's voice. I heard a familiar voice and there was Paul Newman white hair, white beard looking good and his wife and another woman I couldn't identify. I remember thinking that Paul Newman had been in the movie Nobody's Fool with Melanie Griffith who was in the show at that time.

Some more I just thought of. I was on the set of reshoots for the first X MEN movie so I spoke with the very sweet HALLE BERRY. Met BRYAN SINGER who wasn’t interested in me. I was cute and youthful but maybe too old at 25. Also went out with Bryan and GARY GODDARD the night X MEN came out. We snuck into the back of theaters to hear audience reaction. In the middle of the night, we picked up all the papers and I read them all the reviews. Also, another day, went to FAO Schwartz with Bryan and IAN MCKELLAN to see the toys of Ian’s character.

[quote]Another one is DW Moffett at the height of his youthful good looks. Very down-to-earth guy whose interests were the stage and character roles. I think his handsomeness limited himself in the latter, but he never, ever wanted to be a big movie star. A case where losing his good looks actually helped him in the career he wanted.
r66 again. I looked up DW Moffett to see what he was up to. The last thing I saw him in was MAY/DECEMBER as Julianne Moore's ex-husband in a non-showy role, which is exactly the kind of thing he'd be drawn to.
He's apparently an instructor at a college in Savannah and works regularly in TV.
Oh, and he starred in the original Broadway production of THE LONELY HEART, which also is not surprising except he is straight as a string and it was probably risky career-wise for a straight guy to do that at the time.
DW, if you remember me at all, it's as the guy from whom you bummed a million smokes after [redacted] meetings.

When I owned my store (1987-2011), I had a number of famous men (and women) darken my doorway for those 24 years, I treated them all like real people, which most of them appreciated.
The nice ones (polite, friendly and respectful to me and my staff) :
JFK Jr (incredibly handsome, I honestly quivered standing next to him), Tommy Tune (touring in a B'way musical in the early 90s), James Woods (his relatives owned the café next door to my store, he was very kind and humble whenever he visited) , 'Knots Landing' actor Paul Carafotes (he was producing /trying out a play in my city during the summer of 2006 hoping it would go to B'way but it never did / handsome, hunky dude and so friendly), Rob Schneider (summer of 2001; I couldn't believe how handsome he was in person and what a hot body back then - incredibly kind and friendly), Neil Patrick Harris (summer of 2001 - very friendly and 'cute') .
The assholes (those who were unfriendly and overly-impressed with themselves) :
Andy Williams (in town, doing a Christmas concert), author Dominick Dunne ( commencement speaker at a college graduation), Ricky Paul Goldin (1980s soap actor who was not nearly as hot or famous as he thought he was / touring in a Broadway show in the early 90s) , Jai Rodriguez (really hot, but overly-impressed with himself - in town for a book signing).

Billy Campbell was the star of a play [italic]Fortinbras[/italic]. I was waiting outside in the dusk on the sidewalk for the theater to open, not many people around. I see someone approaching the theater on the sidewalk, and realized just as he got within a few feet and turned to go to the stage entrance that it was Billy Campbell. As he approached he was looking at me; as he turned, he and I looked deep into each other's eyes. Had I not been with a (one-time) date, I would have lingered after the play to see if anything would develop, as electricity was exchanged when we looked into each other's eyes.

R10 Agreed on Bill Clinton. It was kind of startling, actually.
I lived in Los Angeles decades ago so met plenty and most are far more normal than anyone would think. Chevy Chase is tall and muttered under his breath “cheeseburger cheeseburger” at my restaurant. Mel Gibson is not tall, has a weird sense of humor but was also totally cool sitting at the tiniest, worst table at same restaurant. Jeff Bridges was a movie star, period.
Met Jimmy Page in London about 12 years ago and he was sweet. He hugged me and I realized how thin he was. Perfect skin.

I almost ran into JFK, Jr. at the Democratic Convention in 1988. I was wandering around the outer perimeter of the hall, and he was turning a corner. Really tall. (I am short) and very good looking. Very good looking. He had on a suit, all dressed up. I think he was going to speak at the convention that night.

Bill Gates -- When I worked at Microsoft in the 1980s, our team would meet with him monthly. Very focused, nerdy. Not charismatic.
Obama -- Shorter than I'd thought. "On" all the time. Looks right at you when speaking to you. Very charismatic.
Al Parker -- Much shorter than I'd thought. Smelled good. Huge dick on a short man. I met him at an AIDS benefit in NYC, I was in the men's room peeing when he came in to pee. If it was a video, I'd've dropped to my knees in a minute.

Working in Hollywood I've met and known many famous men. Most of them aren't particularly interesting. Every now and then you run into a truly nice guy -- John Stewart, Steve Gutenberg, Adam Sandler come to mind. Sometimes you run into someone who is truly horrible. The entire Hanks family, for instance. James Woods (not surprising).
But for some reason the encounter that still sticks in my mind is flying to NY next to Timothy Hutton and realizing that he had the worst body odor I've ever encountered. I tried to change seats by the flight was full. It was 6 hours of odoriferous hell.

Late perennial supporting actor Robert Webber, many times. He met my Canadian parents on a golf course in South Carolina back in the 1960s.
Nice guy. Heavy whiskey drinker but never a messy drunk. We knew not to ask too many questions about Hollywood but once in a while, after a few fingers of Wiser's, he'd say a few things about actors he didn't like.
Did not like Ryan O'Neal or Sean Connery. Absolutely loved Leigh Taylor Young. Said she was a troubled young woman who should have stayed away from Ryan.
He was closer to my eldest sister. She's cagey about it but I think they had something going. I will ask her more about his assessments of other actors.
Also, one afternoon in the late 1980s I almost literally ran into Pierre Elliot Trudeau (Justin's more significant father) in Montreal, on Ste Catherine St in Westmount, right in front of Westmount Square. He was in a hurry, running across the street paying no attention to traffic. Probably coming from lunch at Hong Kong House.
A little man with a big nose and a lovely smile. Shocking charisma. We shook hands. I told him I was "enchante" to meet him and he replied, "c'est moi qui est enchante"

While at my Wall Street law firm job: William Webster (head of the CIA)

Coming out of a movie I was headed into: Ed Koch (then ex-mayor and movie reviewer) who surprised me with his tallness
While filming: Bill Murray (I worked in the old McGraw hill building a million years ago, and they filmed a scene for ghostbusters in the restaurant in the lobby, I don’t know if it made it into the movie)

As I mentioned he was jaywalking and my taxi driver had to slam on the brakes not to plow over him. Gene was unperturbed and actually put his hands on the hood and leaned forward and looked right at the driver and said “howaya?”
When my car pulled away the driver said to me, “hey that’s that guy, from tv.” I told him it was Gene Shalit and didn’t get any recognition from the name. The driver was a working class outer borough guy like most drivers were in the 70s.

He watched Williams’ rise with enthusiasm, then one day in 1980 or 81 he saw Williams in Sausalito. He approached him expecting at least a polite greeting but Williams looked at him like he was dogshit.

I remember having dinner in a very popular restaurant (at the time) in Manhattan in the summer of 2006 with my friend Claire. Her brother was the bar manager so he was able to get us a table on short notice. We got seated in the front window area, and there was a two-top right next to us, to my left. Her brother came over to us once we were seated, and told us a celebrity couple would be seated next to us, as they were finishing their drinks at the bar, and asked us not to be 'starstruck' or bother them. Sure enough, about ten minutes after, Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen take the table next to us, with MS carrying her martini from the bar. (They made a stunning couple). We don't say a word to each other throughout our meal - we just look straight ahead at each other and listen to everything they say, which is easy to do with them a few feet away. Mary never touched her dinner - instead she ordered two more martinis. (Danson drank water). By the time she was into her third martini, she was definitely 'tipsy' and became more boisterous (he kept 'shushing' her). They had been discussing a movie she was offered which he kept telling her to take, because 'the money was good'. She kept shaking her head no, and repeated 'I'm not doing it'. I guess he pushed too far because she yelled, 'I told you I'm not doing it you fvcking dickhead, now leave me alone!' and pounded her fist on the table, spilling what was left of her third martini. Claire and I jumped in our seats and everyone else turned to look at them. The waiter rushed over, Danson gave him his credit card, as he helped her get up to leave. Danson turned to Claire and me and apologized for ruining our dinner. Once he slowly escorted her out the door, Claire's brother came over to us. He told us that happens often with her, no matter who she comes in with. He also told us Danson was taking care of our tab for us - he left his credit card 'open' to add our bill to his when we were done. He was a true gentleman in the way he handled that situation.

Barenaked Ladies – hung out with them on their first big-venue tour. All very nice guys at the time (1993), and Ed Robertson (the dark-haired singer) has the most beautiful eyes in person.
Charlie Watts – at St Pancras Station, waiting for the Eurostar. A commanding presence and very dapper, even in jeans.
Gilbert Gottfried – almost ran into each other on a street corner in Chelsea. Tiny man, but not as ugly when his face wasn’t all scrunched up. Very apologetic.
Rick Mercer – met several times over the years, but I’m not important enough for him to remember.
Paul Gross – walking through an airport with Wendy Crewson. Tall. Gorgeous. Crewson caught me staring at him and winked at me in an “I know, right?” kind of way.

LET ME CLARIFY: I never meant to imply or suggest Steenbergen was an 'alcoholic' (awful or not). I only relayed an experience I had about 20 years ago in a Manhattan restaurant where I was dining next to her and Danson. Who knows ? She could have been having a bad day and needed a few martinis ? In the early 2000s, I had actress Tyne Daly visit my store around Christmas time. I was shocked to see her walk through the door, but then again, her brother and sister-in-law (he was married to Amy at the time) were regulars, as they did live in the neighborhood (they were somehow connected to the repertory theater in my city). I offered to help her and she just nodded and thanked me, she picked out a few gifts on her own, and when she came to the counter to pay I couldn't help myself and broke my own rule: I did tell her I loved her in 'Gypsy' and that was the second Broadway show I had ever seen and still my all-time favorite. I told her I saw it in May, 1991 when she returned to the show, and all because of her and the show, I became a huge fan of Broadway musicals.
She smiled and thanked me. Then she asked, "What was the first Broadway show you ever saw ?" and I told her 'Aspects of Love' about a year before I saw 'Gypsy'. She then asked with a laugh, "Did you stay awake through the whole thing?"

If we’re counting CHRISTIAN BORLE, he and SUTTON FOSTER lived in the building next to mine and I saw them together from time to time and they seemed happy. I was also in a show with Christian. Interesting story: We were in Jesus Christ Superstar together. It was our Broadway debuts. We went out to lunch one day and talked about him doing Footloose on the road. I asked him if they called and asked him to do it on Broadway, would he leave JCS to do it and he unequivocally said no because he thought the show we were doing was so great (this was before the reviews came out). Then a couple months later, he was offered Footloose on Broadway and left our show to do it. That’s how I learned that it never matters what we say we’d do in a situation until we’re actually in that situation I auditioned with TOM SELLECK for a TV movie. He’s a big man and very magnetic. I could see up close why he is a star. I auditioned for a CLINT EASTWOOD movie at his office. He wasn’t in the room for the audition but I saw him while I was waiting to go in. He took a close look at me and I think he thought I looked too young for the role. Here’s my COLIN QUINN story. I always thought he was cute on SNL. One day, I went to see him perform at the Comedy Cellar and I laughed really loudly at a comedian while Colin was waiting to go on. Colin looked over at me and smiled. I knew one of the other comedians and I talked to him afterwards before I left. Well, apparently after I left, Colin told me friend that he thought I was hot. When my friend told me Colin said that, I was over the moon excited. So I went back another night and then talked with Colin briefly and told him I was writing a screenplay and that I wanted him to read it when I finished it and he gave me his email address!! I kept coming back to flirt with him but nothing was happening. Then my friend told me Colin said to him that he’s not gay but if we were ever in prison together, I’d be the one he’d want! Nothing ever happened between us. He did read the screenplay and gave me notes. He eventually got married and I think he even had a kid.

I was talking to Diana Rigg after a show (okay -getting an autograph) when a guy who was part of the production staff came to take her off to a party. She clearly didn't want to go to the party -and even more clearly didn't want to go with him. She put him off for a few minutes by continuing our conversation. When he came back again she said to me, "Well that's all settled then. You'll be my 'date' for the party and we can continue our lovely conversation." I don't know which of us was more surprised. Clearly, she picked up that I was gay and not threat to her -and we really were having a great conversation about theatre. We stayed at the party for a bit under two hours, and then she pleaded her need for rest, so I took my cue and said I would escort her downstairs and see that she got a taxi. She thanked me for rescuing her and gave me a peck on the cheek.

I smoked a cigarette with Lisa Stansfield on the sidewalk outside a restaurant in SoHo (NYC) back in 2003. She told me she had an apartment in the area. She was lovely, very kind and charming (we'd both had some drinks and were quite tipsy). Photographs do not do her justice, she is stunningly attractive in person. Just gorgeous.

U2 band members.
I was working in a high-end chain hotel.
Bono: upstairs in the club room area, chatting up a young attractive female coworker. She was in the coffee area, restocking stuff, and he was just standing there, talking to her.
Adam Clayton or The Edge (sorry I can't remember which one): sitting at a table in the bar. My coworker, who was serving that table said he had really bad B.O.
Larry Mullen (drummer): small but good-looking. We crossed paths in a hallway and he greeted me with a nod.
All 4 of the band members: hanging out in the club area with very typical-looking women groupies.

The rest of the people weren't so awful, R249 -it's just that Diana was forced into attending (to please one of the producers, I think) and so she did her duty and left as soon as it was feasible. The whole evening was one of the highlights of my life -but I'm sure it was one she'd rather forget as quickly as possible. I never got to see her in person again, but I like to think she would have remembered me. She was one of those people who gave you her undivided attention, and made you feel like she was genuinely interested in what you had to say. A truly great actress.

My LARRY DAVID story. I was cast in a small role of a food delivery boy in an episode about Larry David going into The Producers with DAVID SCHWIMMER. In the scene, I would be delivering food to a production meeting with Larry, David, MEL BROOKS, Susan Stroman, and Cady Huffman. Well for Curb Your Enthusiasm, they just have one big trailer for the whole cast. I was there early. A PA took my breakfast order and I got into costume. By the time the rest of the cast came to the trailer, I was in a food delivery boy outfit eating French Toast. Larry just stared at me like what was I doing there? Ok, then everyone went to set but I was left behind because I wasn’t in the first half of the scene. Then, NATHAN LANE who was in the next scene entered and we made small talk. When it was my turn on set, the director brought me to Larry to go over the outline for the scene (there is no script). When Larry saw me, he went OHHHHH! He didn’t realize I was an actor. He thought I was an actual food delivery boy eating in their trailer. It was a real life Curb moment.

I didn't have the nerve to make a first move but I felt like it was open and waited on him to do it. After flirty talk and lots of touching shoulders and arms (by him) I gave up and went upstairs. I said I was going upstairs and hoped we could talk again sometime (we exchanged numbers but never talked again) and hoped he'd bite but nothing. Then in my room hoped I'd get a call and nothing so i just jerked off to the memory of him squeezing my shoulder. Don't judge.

R266, I lost but had a great time. They film 5 episodes a day (a week's worth of episodes) and when you're not filming the episode that you're in you get to sit in the studio audience and watch the other episodes being taped. I passed Vaughn walking downtown Michigan Ave., as well. He had the hood of his sweatshirt drawn tightly around his face, which is why people weren't recognizing him. Both of them got out of their limos and walked over to the crowd of people nearby and started signing autographs. I was in the front row of that crowd and inches from both of them.
From a purely physical point of view, these two were nothing out of the ordinary, looks wise, stature wise, weight wise. Take them out of their tuxedos and put them in ordinary street clothes and have them walk the streets and no one would pay them the slightest bit of attention because they were both so ordinary looking.

R150 - The barista firing incident was in 96/97 and, boy, did I hear about it. We ran into WKS in the early/mid aughts. A Rehab Institute employee accused him of assault shortly afterwards. My friend and I were all 😒 🤮 .
I looked at Wiki to confirm the time frame, and...
[QUOTE]In 2004, a former employee of the Center for International Rehabilitation (CIR) alleged that Smith had sexually assaulted her in 1999, and sued him.[14] Smith denied her charges, calling them "outrageous" and saying that "family and personal history have made me unusually vulnerable to these kinds of charges".[15] Smith later resigned from the CIR.[16]
[QUOTE]A spokesman for the organization later acknowledged that two separate federal sexual harassment claims against Smith, by former female employees of CIR, had been "settled amicably."[17][18] On January 5, 2005, the court dismissed the employee's lawsuit.[19]
He married a younger woman at 50 and has 3 kids.

I was at a birthday party he also attended maybe 10 years ago, and he was so nice and easy going. The funny thing is I didn’t recognize him (though he looked great) because I never watched his hit shows back in the day. So when I asked what he did and he said he was in the entertainment industry, I imagined he did lighting or sound or something.
I said, “You look like an actor.” He said, “What does an actor look like?” And I said, “Well, your face is very classic. Like you could be someone in the 1800s, or the 1920s or the 1950s… or now. That’s a big plus for an actor because they can play a lot of parts. People must have tried to get you to act?” (!!)
Anyway, he’s still very handsome in person. And a nice guy. Modest. And I did EVENTUALLY catch on to the fact that he was indeed an actor, and not some even-featured sound guy who should have been an actor : )

Back in the summer of 2001, I was in NYC on business and had nothing planned on one particular night. I was looking for a Broadway musical to go to (not many had performances on a Sunday night) and ended up at 'Full Monty'. Next to me was another single seat on the aisle, and right before the curtain went up this handsome older guy (maybe 50ish) sat next to me. He just ooozed 'sexy'. I wasn't much into older guys back then (I was in my late 30s) but this guy was just incredible - I had to remind myself to watch the production, and stop looking at him.
During intermission he turned to me to make conversation about the show - he said something about he knew the producer or something. Looking at him face to face, I knew he was an actor but couldn't place his name. He got up to leave for a few minutes and wow! what a body on this guy, and a beautiful hairy chest his shirt was unbottoned a few buttons). I was trying to figure out who he was and kept thinking he was in gay porn. He asked me if I was visiting the city, and I told him I was there on business for a few days.
At one point in the second act, I noticed he moved his right leg and now his leg was touching mine (he didn't have to do that - there was plenty of leg room). Then during one of the actor's dance scene, he leaned over to me and whispered 'that guy has a great ass'. When the show was over and we stood up, he asked me if I wanted to go for a drink. I said fine, and he asked me where I was staying, so we headed back in that direction (a few blocks away) and he suggested we go to the hotel bar. Once we were seated at the bar (I don't drink, so I'm sipping a club soda - forgot what he drank), I realized we never ever introduced ourselves - we were just walking and talking. I offered to shake his hand and introduced myself (I even jokingly commented we had not introduced ourselves) and then he introduced himself with a sexy smile, "I'm Martin. Martin Kove." I responded, "Isbecki !" and he laughed - knowing I knew him from 'Cagney & Lacey'. Now it all came together - this guy was drop-dead gorgeus.
As we were talking (he was very polite and interesting) he asked what I thought of the show, and I told him it was 'Okay' - I was expecting something better. He agreed. He then said he knew the producer, and he was asked to replace one of the actors in the show in November (the producer thought it needed a 'familiar name'. I remember blurting out the words, "You certainly have the looks and body for it." He winked and told me I was 'sweet' and then said he's not confident he could pull off the singing.
After about ninety minutes (I was exhausted, I had a very long / busy day) of great conversation (in which he never mentioned a wife / girlfriend / boyfriend, and he never asked me about anyone I was seeing), I told him I had to call it a night. He asked me if I wanted him to take me to my room, and like an idiot, I said 'no'. I was so tired, and so awe-struck by him and his looks, I was afraid I would embarrass myself with him (what if I couldn't get an erection because I was nervous ?). He then scribbled down his number on a napkin (I believe I still have it somewhere) and told me 'If you change your mind the next couple of days...' I never did. He did walk me to the area off the lobby where the elevators were, told me what a great time he had, and said again, 'You have my number...' Then he gave me a kiss on my cheek and patted my ass - just before the elevators opened. I honestly thought I was going to pass out right there and get crushed by the doors.
I don't think I slept the next few nights, or paid attention to the business meetings I had over the next few days. I couldn't get that Sunday night out of my head - kept seeing 'Martin' in front of me. A beautiful memory from 20+ years ago I will treasure forever.

Kove never mentioned the words 'wife' or 'kids'. Or if he did, I was just hypnotized by his looks and body.
The producer / friend of 'Full Monty' knew what he was doing asking Kove to replace one of the actors - my God, watching him on stage as a stripper ? Even in his mid-50s ? Every gay guy in America would line up around the block for tickets each day - just to see that VPL up close. Who in the audience would even care if he could whistle a tune ? (I don't know for certain, but I don't think he did take the offer).

My friend plays Ultimate Frisbee and said that Woody Harrelson showed up for a game. (It's the type of thing that you can just show up to.) Anyway, because there were a few people who didn't know each other, people were introducing themselves. Someone asked Woody: "What's your name?" and he rolled his eyes.

Scott Baio. On a flight to Vegas. He sat in coach. Asked for extra snacks. A family from Utah recognized him and wouldn’t leave him alone. He was nice to them. I just thought it was hilarious how starstruck they were. I just went back to my Stephen King book.

Bryan Singer at a movie premiere. Was with a very young man. Was going to ask for his autograph cause I’m a X-Men fan, but he went to the bathroom and some old guy was bothering him in there for his autograph so I just said forget it.

Jaromir Jagr - met in a hotel in Annapolis, MD. I was at the bar with co-workers and he was with an older man. He was wearing shorts. We made eye contact a few times. I (discreetly) gave my junk a tug a few times over the course of an hour, as did he. We met in the men's room, did a 30-second show-and-tell, and then had to leave. Too many people. Nice uncut cock. ~2002
Matthew McConaughey - saw at Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. He was with his wife and children. Handsome. ~2015
Paul Newman - saw. He was filming The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds near my house where I grew up. 1971 Matt Bomer - met him in Dallas. We went door-knocking for Beto in 2018. Very nice guy. And handsome as fuck.
Dana Goldberg - same as above, but not handsome.
Bill Clinton - met at a fundraiser/speech. I agree with the posters about his charisma. 2016
Danny Glover - saw in a hotel where my son had an academic competition. 1996ish
John Savage - he had just did a part in The Exonerated and came out in front of the theater. He was still handsome but very short. 1998?
Several other celebrities at HRC charity event meet-and-greets.

Spent a few days at the same hotel as Aaron Neville. I never spoke to him, but he seemed very nice to the people who did, and was laid back, I thought. He was a really big man.

Brad Pitt: He was filming of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” in the lobby of an Art Deco building in downtown LA, and set security was blocking guests from getting to my friend’s rooftop birthday party. When Brad found out about the snafu, he personally came upstairs to apologize to her. I was standing next to her, and he was charming, sincere, and had a golden glow. A genuinely sweet guy.
Greg Louganis: He was doing a book signing in Laguna Beach and we somehow got the (incorrect) messsge that he wanted my husband and I to tag along with him to an after party at the Wyland Gallery. We arrived after he did and were turned away at the door, but Greg overheard the exchange and gave us armloads of swag and a sheepish, “Sorry guys.” Very sexy but painfully shy.
Edward Kerr: Sexy actor from “Seaquest DSV” and a bit part in “Sex and the City.” Seatmate on a flight to his hometown in Missouri. Asked me for some professional advice about his then-current relationship (with a woman), and we felt like old friends by the time we parted. He even gave me his number to catch up over coffee back in LA, but I never used it.

Mmmm, Edward Kerr. One of my favorite C-List, “Hey, it’s that guy” actors. So cute.

I remember standing in Manhattan waiting to cross the street at a corner, and Greg Louganis came up from behind me and stood next to me (it was just when his hair was starting to turn gray - so maybe 25 years ago ?). Anyhow we smiled at each other and said our hellos, and somehow mentioned to me he was in town judging one of the dog shows. Then the light changed, time to cross - and he was lost in the crowd. I remember how strikingly handsome he was and what a beautiful body on him - especially his ass as he walked away (he was dresses in a rather revealing 'muscle shirt' which nicely revealed his muscles, and tight shorts - he knew how good he looked).

I've told this story a few times but I'll mention it again - Rosie O'Donnell at the premiere of the Sian Phillips musical 'Marlene'. My friend and I had stayed at the red carpet for about twenty minutes on opening night (we just happened to be walking by there when the limos started pulling up) and then we left. We were about a block or so away from the theater when a SUV (not a limo) pulled up, and out of the back seat came Rosie. She didn't have anyone with her, and kept telling the driver she was 'fine' - once she was near the two of us, she asked my friend and I if we could walk her to the theater and 'block her' from the cameras. She was very nervous.
We turned back towards the theater and walked with her (she kept thanking us) and once we made it to the red carpet she told the both of us where to stand to block her (she knew exactly what she was doing so no one could get a clear view of her). Once inside the lobby she thanked us again and again, and then asked if we wanted to stay for the show. She went to the box office and came back with two tickets in the front row of the balcony. Once we took our seats, we could see her below in the orchestra section - she met up with Regis Philbin and his wife, and Barbara Walters and some woman.
by Anonymous | reply 327 | January 15, 2025 11:52 AM |
Speaking of Barbara Walters, she and a few other women sat right in front of me and another friend at the revival of 'Most Happy Fella' (May, 1992). She was much smaller than I expected - kind of looked like a frail bird. She took the seat exactly in front of me dressed in pastel pink, but never looked at anyone in my row nor acknowledged or said hi to the people in front of her (everyone was staring at her). I guess she and the other women heard the whispering in the area around her, so one of the women stood up (right before the curtain went up) and said in a rather loud voice, 'Yes, this is Barbara Walters sitting here and she'd like to be left alone so she can enjoy the show like everyone else here. Please do not bother her during the show or intermission. '
The woman was not rude in any way, she was very direct. I have to hand it to the woman - she took care of that. Everyone faced the stage and no one bothered Walters - not even during intermission. As a matter of fact, during intermission, Walters got up from her seat to stand but never left her seat. She was standing facing me and my friend, but never ever made eye contact with us or anyone else - she was just continuing to chat with her friends but had trained herself not to look around at the people in the theater. She did the same thing when she and the women left the theater - she focused her eyes down to her feet while the others walked her out.

Met Robert Duvall at the luggage carousel in Milwaukee in the 80s. No hairpiece but I knew it was him. We chatted a bit; he was in Milwaukee to visit his brother who was a Jesuit priest teaching at Marquette University. I told him I was a fan from Boo Radley on to Tom Haden and we shook hands. Gracious guy.

Yeah Jack, this is Faye Dunaway... Look I've raced some of the stuff from the O'Neill interview but I'm not really interested in Terry O'Neill - he's a BIG, BIG LIAR and I'm really not interested in in him and you know all and dilly-dallying and carrying over Mommie Dearest...I don't even want to discuss it in my interview or on this Lloyd-Webber thing: those are NEGATIVES and I notice that you have nothing in about Marlon Brando, you have nothing in about Johnny Depp which I did two films with, I don't expect you to get get him for an interview, but you could put some footage in of the of the Kusturica movie which I was BRILLIANT in and it was not well sold in this country you can talk about the Marlon Brando film that I was wonderful in. All the POSITIVE things along that that period, the Marlon Brando film was going on at the same time that the Lloyd-Webber STUPIDITY was going on and you all have to put in the Lloyd-Webber STUPIDITY, you can't put in that I worked with the wonderful Marlon Brando and talk to the director of that movie FOR CHRISTSAKE! And I'm not gonna approve it and I'm really upset now because that uh for two nights now tried to thread through that STUPID interview with a with a man that I will not even waste my time discussing. And and you know who, suffice it to say, stopped working when he married me and pretended to be my manager for a very long time so LET'S NOT EVEN GO THERE! It's very upsetting to me! And then to put my uh our child in JEOPARDY the way he has. So I'm not interested in these NEGATIVE things that you all are putting in there with me in! I don't want Llloys-Webber in, I'd like you to cut him out, and I'd like you to really trim down everything to do with that Mommie Dearest, I'm not gonna talk about it, maybe one thing I'm gonna say about it and THAT'S ALL. It's just like uh you know an obsession, why can't you be obsessed about POSITIVE THINGS?! About Marlon Brando? About the Kusturica movie that was THE HIT OF ALL THE EUROPE AND CANNES? About uh, the film I did with Brando and talk to that, YOU KNOW?!

Ted Turner - in the gym of the hotel I was staying at in Beijing. He was doing bicep curls while dressed in a shirt and tie. His assistant stood by holding his suit coat. Saw him again later the same day in the lobby with his Jane Fonda-lookalike significant other.

From a few set visits in the 1980s-1990s:
- V (I've posted about that before) ... hung out with the younger actors. Blair Tefkin was friends with a girl named Hilary Shapiro, who wasn't in the show but achieved DL fame as Yvonne, the aerobics instructor on The Golden Girls. She was around. Since the topic is men, Jeff Yagher was very nice and handsome and didn't want to be left out of what the people his age were doing.
- Newhart ... visited a friend who was working there. Never saw the main set, but was in the building. Peter Scolari introduced himself and sat down to eat a bag of Pepperidge Farm cookies and offered me some. Very short, very intense, obviously quite smart, didn't feel the need to be "on." At one point Julia Duffy came by pushing her new baby in a stroller and he introduced me. She was perfectly pleasant.
- Dynasty or The Colbys ... I swear I don't remember which one (I'm sure someone can school me). On location at some outdoor glass cathedral looking over the ocean in what must have been Orange County. I'm not even sure why I was there, but they were supposed to be shooting a wedding scene. Instead, everyone was milling around. Charlton Heston was EXTREMELY tall and sat in a chair by himself, ignoring all the chaos and reading a military book. I stepped aside for a smoke and John James joined me and engaged in idle conversation the way smokers used to do. Nice guy but extremely bland. Probably had three cigs with him before I left the location. God, I wish I remember why I was even there.

Rick Schroder came to visit my elementary school to talk about motivation and healthy eating. Unsurprisingly, most of the kids didn't recognize or care who he was, although I was familiar with him. I don't remember his speech except that it was really boring and us kids started getting antsy. He looked angry when someone flew a paper airplane towards his face. He ended up leaving before finishing his speech, calling us "a bunch of dumb kids." It was great!

When I was around 10 years old, my mother and my aunt would take us kids to spend the day at a new hotel in Newport RI (called 'The Sheraton Islander' back then) to have lunch and use their pool (they used to sell 'day passes' to non-hotel guests). We'd sit outside on the patio under the umbrella to have lunch, then my mother and aunt would sit by the pool and we kids would be in the 'kiddie end' of the pool with the lifeguards, or playing kid games they had set up for us.
One day, this tall, blond, handsome, shirtless guy in sunglasses and in blue and white striped shorts, with the hairiest chest I had ever seen in my ten years, walked through the crowd (causing a bit of quiet hysteria) to join another man at one of the tables to have his lunch. Everyone turned to look at him (including my mother and aunt) and everyone whispered and smiled in his direction, yet no one got up to approach this mystery handsome man (I think I probably knew I liked men when I saw his chest). The public was civil then, and left this man alone to have his lunch with the other guy.
I wasn't exactly into movies then (except for Disney cartoons) but he turned out to be Robert Redford. He was filming the movie 'The Great Gatsby' in Newport that summer, and the cast was staying at this new hotel in Newport. It was more than fifty years ago, but I still remember it as though it was just last week.

Neil Patrick Harris -
July of 2001, he and a female friend of his came into my store on a very slow summer day (my area was very quiet in the summer months, waiting for the students to come back to the colleges). I had no idea who he was, didn't recognize him at all. Just noticed this really sexy gay guy was in my store with a rather ordinary looking female friend. Turns out the female was just starting a job at one of the colleges in my area, and the guy had been there for the past week to help her move in and settle in (a few blocks from me). They were friendly and chatty. He kept saying how much he liked my store, and he'd be back when he came to visit his friend.
Before they were leaving, the female said to me, "You don't have any idea who he is do you ?" The guy blushed and smiled, then the female said, 'He's Neil Patrick Harris - the actor from Doogie Howser'. The three of us started laughing and I made stupid excuses like 'I didn't realize Doogie turned into a handsome doctor...'
Then he asked me if I was heading to NYC in the fall (we had talked about NY earlier in the conversation) and then gave me his phone number to call him when I was out there, and he'd have tickets waiting for me at the theater for the new musical revival he was going to be starring in, 'Assassins'. I thanked him, grabbed his phone number, and said 'See you in NY in a few months.' Of course, 9-11 happened, the revival was canceled (as were my planned visits to NYC) and I never did see NPH again (I did see his friend a few more times, and she only lasted at her job for a few months - she was heading back to NY to return to her old job).

I waited on Christopher Atkins when I worked retail in Dallas, while he was filming 'Dallas'. We are about the same age. He whipped out an Amex gold card ( a big deal 40 years ago), and told me he was buying a present for Leslie Ann Warren. He seemed embarrassed with this conspicuous spending and was almost apologizing for it. It struck me as sweet, if not a bit awkward. I never was into him and never followed his career, but I hope he turned out ok, and not messed up. Seems like he got a lot of big attention at a very tender age.

Ricky Martin, 4 times. Beautiful in person. Very nice to his fans, after an MTV show, at a CD signing, on the Today Show Plaza, exiting a hotel, etc.
Adam Lambert, more than a few times. Total sweetheart, hugged me once for a gift, another time for something personal.
Jim Shore the Tchotchkes Man. Once. Very nice, humble. It was at a signing event, and he spoke kindly to me ashe signed an angel for my seriously ill mother.
Peter Jennings. His London ABC studio could be seen rather close-up from my hotel, where I was with a student tour group. So we went over, met him. Gave his undivided attention to each of us in turn.
Al Gore. Exited his Town Car to hustle into the CBS studios, but as the only one who noticed I got a handshake!
President Carter, autographed book. President Clinton, autographed book and a hand-hold on line. Mario Cuomo, brief conversation after a college visit. Howard Dean, photo and a signed Jim Shore "Democratic donkey." And assorted other famous Democratic men. All great, friendly, looking as good in person as on TV (Dean moreso).
But the two highlights of my "Famous Men I've Met" experiences were:
Meeting and being embraced by LITTLE ANTHONY! After a local PBS concert.
And eating dinner in a restaurant booth seated right next to the great and greatly under-appreciated singer CHAD MITCHELL, my having been invited by one of the entourage wives after meeting her in the venue restroom after a Trio reunion concert! I was, maybe still am, madly in love with Chad my entire life. I was truly living the dream. He was awesome. Too bad he mentioned he was about to embark on a Hawaiian vacation with his wife (Oh, well. I was married anyway, haha!).

It was a very hot summer day, and he had tight jeans and a black muscle shirt on. I got hard just standing next to him. I heard about this secondhand. I was working at a theatre box office where everyone but me was a lesbian for some reason. They say that the theatre is full of gay men but this was like a coven. One night Russell Crowe appeared and asked for a ticket for a show. The lesbian at the counter apparently went all gaga until Russell asked her if she could use her computer to see if he could get a ticket. She finally pulled herself together and got him the ticket. Goes to show even lesbians could have been struck dumb by the hot and charming Russell Crowe. The lesbian came back into the office to tell us all about it.

I was 15 minutes into watching A Real Pain when I remembered that I saw Jesse Eisenberg about ten years ago. He was on the phone standing outside of a building on University Place in NYC as I was walking down the street. He scowled at me as I was passing him by and I got a nasty vibe from him.
I did not go back to watching the film as I was only watching for Kieran Culkin, and this memory turned me off.

R386 Very different—I was in the Jefferson Market Library (NYC) just a few weeks ago when I realized Jesse Eisenberg was walking toward me. I must have had a look of recognition on my face, because he gave me a friendly “hi.” I said “hi” back.

the upside is people are often very nice and I am aware that it takes a bit of courage to approach a stranger and say something nice, so I appreciate that. On the other hand. It can be weird if someone is running after you, yelling your name and you don't know a. if you know them, b., if they are crazy and maybe dangerous. Sometimes people watch you for a while which can feel weird. I don't relish the selfie request. Also, not often but people do say some questionable things sometimes, like " you look better on screen" or "you are Sooo much better looking in person" I don't disguise because I found that attracts more attention. I am NEVER disappointed when someone doesn't recognize me and that happens fairly often.

I had quite a long convo with Elizabeth Montgomery not recognizing her either until later. A really lovely woman. Looked different without hair and makeup. Such a nice person. RIP

This is not an actual meet, but it's an interesting story to share...
When I owned my gift store, I designed my own store bags / logo. They were very different, and my customers seemed to love them - they were very complimentary on them when I handed them their purchases in their bag.
One customer who started coming in during the early 90s was this 'elder queen' who appeared to be rather wealthy (don't know if he really was, but he did spend a lot of money in my store). He really was a hoot. He loved my store, and would visit just about every week. At one point, he told me he was going to NYC that weekend to see Glenn Close in 'Sunset Boulevard' (it was early in her run), and somehow was guaranteed (by a connection he had at the theater) to meet her backstage after the matinee. I helped him pick out something for her (I can't remember what it was) and put it in my store bag after I gift-wrapped it for him. Off he went...
The following week he returns, and can't wait to tell me all about the show (he even sang part of 'With One Look' for me and my customers, completely off-key) and meeting 'the wonderful Glenn Close' after the show. He tells me in detail how she opened the bag and pulled out the gift (he gave her a bouquet of flowers, too), she unwrapped it, and thanked him. Then he said what she really loved was my store bag - she decorated her dressing room with a collection of store bags from different places in NYC hanging on her wall, and added mine to the collection. I laughed, made a polite comment, not really knowing if he was imagining this or it really happened.
THEN he pulls out a bunch of photos he took of Glenn Close in her dressing room, and one is of her standing near her wall of 'bags' and she's pointing to mine, as she's smiling to the camera ! I was completely shocked. He told me I could keep the photo because he had the negatives, so he could make another copy of it. I put it in a frame I had and had it on my counter from that day forward (and have no idea where it is today). I wonder if she packed up her collection of bags and took them with her when she left the show - or did she leave them behind for Betty Buckley ? Or did she throw them all away ?
I have no idea what ever happened to that guy - he kept returning for a while, then disappeared. (Customers often did that - you become their 'favorite store', they can't get enough of you, then another store catches their eye and they disappear from yours). He was memorable, though.

Again, when I had my store (1987-2011), in the early 1990s I had this young lady who would come in all the time and by greeting cards to 'send home'. She was a college student, and I loved chatting with her when she came in - a real pleasure to have her visit (and she spent a ton of money). I knew she came from CT, and she told me a lot of the cards she bought she sent to her mother, two or three a week (they were the 'fine art' museum cards), and her mother was keeping every one in a photo album. She and her mother had a close relationship, from what she shared, and she really missed her.
At one point, I knew 'parents weekend' was happening soon, and I told her if her mother was visiting I'd love for her to bring her in so I could meet her. She told me she didn't think her mother would be here for that weekend, because she would bring too much attention to herself. I guess I gave her a puzzled look (as I immediately thought, 'What a narcissist her mother must be') and she asked, "Did I ever tell you who my mother is ?" I had no idea, and she said "Diana Ross". WHAT ? She told me she thought I knew, because almost every time she came in my store, I was playing her music. I told her I was playing her mom's music because I love her music! This was her eldest daughter Rhonda Ross, who was beginning her own career as a jazz artist in local clubs in my area. She said 'Next time my mom is in town, I'll try to bring her in if there's not too many people around." Unfortunately, she never did - but Rhonda did bring me her new CD autographed at the time ("The Lady Sings...Jazz and Blues").
Before she graduated, she did bring her younger sister in - she, too was going to attend the same school. This was Tracee Ross, who became a regular customer of mine also (again, buying tons of cards to send to her mom) and all I can say is she was the opposite of Rhonda. Not the most pleasant person when she would visit, and not the friendliest (she never made eye contact with me or my staff).

I made a pass at a star pro athlete I didn't recognize whom I encountered at a gay cruising spot. In an ironic twist of fate he knew exactly who I was when he threatened to cut my throat because we had previously met and I had forgotten. When I told him I felt sorry for him, he had a startle response.
There was a future pro athlete who threatened a gay guy who was promoting a gay literary magazine in the dining room of our dorm in college. I stood on a table behind him with a chair over my head ready to bring it down on him if he tried anything. People tut-tutted me: "Violence is never the answer," but he was not so judgmental. Later I caught this same future pro jacking off in the "active" men's room at a l ibrary on campus and I can describe his penis in excruciating detail.

I've seen several famous men on the street in NY - but it doesn't register sometimes until you have passed them. George Carlin, Peter Jennings, Gregory Hines, George Michael, and many others.
I'm 6'2" so most of them are shorter than me, which shouldn't be surprising, but you do realize stars are NOT larger than life and are just regular people going about their business.

My brother was asked to stand up in a wedding in 1977, give or take a year. The bride was the daughter of one of the Hollywood studio heads. The orchestra at the reception played mostly Henry Mancini, probably because he was conducting (!). This was the back yard of the father-of-the-bride's house. My brother said essentially every last Golden Age star/icon that was still alive was there. I could go on with a nauseating list of name dropping.

I've had casual encounters with Justin Timberlake a number of times. He's a narcissistic, smug, uptight asshole. Surrounds himself with bodyguards, even on the movie set where I was a day player, and will refuse to look anyone in the eye. Pretends you're not really there by looking right past you.

Well I'll tell a story concerning Sondheim that I've told before but I'll tell again because it was such a close call.
During the controversial Follies revival with Blythe Sondheim along with the director gave an interview in the auditorium of the Guggenheim. I brought with me my souvenir book of the original production which I had kept in perfect condition from the day I saw it. I wanted him to sign the cover which I would frame and treasure for the rest of my life and was waiting while he was talking with Betty Persky and Comden and Green. I was with a friend and through an act of God there was a guy ahead of us with a cd of Into the Woods. He held out the cover for Sondheim to sign and very surprisingly he turned on him and said angrily 'I AM NOT A COMMODITY!' My friend and I looked at each other and got out of there, fast. If he had turned on me like that it would have hurt so much and I would have never forgotten it.

R425 - most people don't realize how thin and skinny most stars are. I would say 90% are on the lower end of the healthy BMI weight scale.
For example, a 'healthy' BMI (yes I know it's a bullshit scale) for a 6ft tall man would be 138-183 lbs. I'd say many male stars would fall around 155-160lbs range, which is atypically thin for an average US male.
by Anonymous | reply 427 | January 19, 2025 11:29 PM |
True r427. One thing about seeing celebs in person is how extremely thin they are. The camera adds weight and they have to be very thin. Many of them look underweight. I saw Matt Bomer filming something on the street in NY and he's another one who looks like a scarecrow. He looks great on camera but IRL he looks like he needs to gain about 15-20 lbs.

I was at a matinee of Into the Woods and was a few rows away from James Lapine, who was attending with Sondheim's widower/husband, Jeff Romley. I noted it with amusement and thought it was nice to see the show with them both there. But then 10 or so minutes into the show, in swooped JLo with about a million kids (but no Ben Affleck). Patti LuPone complained about it, and must have also been close, but I didn't her there.

R431 - agreed. But that IS part of their job - to maintain their look - just like models.
I can understand the thousand different diets, workouts and Ozempic crazes in celebrity culture when they are pressured to be thin. But that's the industry - and it's always been that way.
Once you have some money, it becomes a 1000% easier with your low-cal food pre-made, assistants, trainers, etc.

At the bottom of "the" escalator in Trump Tower I walked past Donald Trump on my way to Tower Records! How's that for a sentence?!
In Paris in some boutique next to Maxim's there were Andy Williams and Claudine Longet, post-Spider. They were shopping, I was shopping, so I decided not to have the twain meet.
On Broadway stage-door lines I've met Denzel (Brutus in "Julius Caesar"), who was all smiling and friendly and cooperative with photos; Tim Curry (the original "Spamalot"), who happily signed my "RHPS" album cover; Ian McShane ("The Homecoming"), who signed my copy of a CD of his (he sings...adequately) without comment; and Clay Aiken, Christopher Seiber, Rick Holmes, Tom Deckman, Bradley Dean ("Spamalot").
Speaking of the last, I saw Tony Roberts stride through Shubert Alley looking bemused at the Shubert crowd for Clay! And on its closing night, I watched as Eric Idle was the final one to leave the theater. I think I said "Hi, Eric!" But maybe I just wish I had!
The only famous athlete I ever met was Boston's Nate "Tiny" Archibald at a small gathering at Lehigh University. He had professional photos for signing, but I asked him to sign a newspaper article with a huge headline of the Celtics defeating the 76ers, Game 7, Eastern Conference Championship!
At book signings I met and spoke to Malachy McCourt, telling him how much I had enjoyed his appearances on "The Merv Griffin Show"; and Mickey Spillane, to whom I said that "I, The Jury" was one of my favorite books (you will NOT guess the ending!). He was very chatty with the 20-Something (female) me 😉!
And at my only other book-signing, in America's oldest bookstore, Bethlehem's Moravian Bookstore of 1755, I met the wonderful Christopher Radko, purveyor of beautiful Christmas ornaments (turn in your DL card if you don't know of him!). (He was there because he wrote the Forward to the book "A Very Vintage Christmas," by Bob Richter, seated next to Christopher.) He was kind and personable and seemed grateful for his success. The store has a permanent display area of available Radko ornaments, of which I've purchased more than a few!

r393- I enjoy being recognized. It doesn't happen non-stop every day but when it does, it's nice. I always make sure it's a good experience for them. I generally get approached outside of the big cities or among tourists. I don't know how I'd feel about it if I were someone like Hugh Jackman or Tom Cruise and turning heads absolutely everywhere I go. I will tell one funny story. Once, someone called out to me on the street and I just assumed it was a recognition so I happily stopped for him. But it wasn't a recognition. He was asking for money! Since I turned around openly when he stopped me, I then had to stand there and listen to his sad story.

When I had my store, NE Patriot Adam Vinatieri was a regular (along with his wife). They lived in the next town over (where there were a number of nice gift shops), but they would always come to mine (as he said to me once, 'We know we can trust you.' Trust is a very big thing with high-profile people when they shop stores /. go to restaurants...and if you can establish that trust with them, you're golden).
At the time, Vinatieri and Brady (who never came in my store, but was a regular at the restaurant a few doors down from me) were the 'power duo' on the team. He was such a handsome, sexy guy with the perfect body. He and his wife couldn't be any nicer, and at Christmas time, they'd spend a fortune. Once he left the team, he sold his house and I never saw or heard from them again (even though before they left, I reminded them that they could order online and I'd be happy to ship anywhere).

If this counts, I met many famous gay porn actors from the 80s and 90s when I attended the trade shows at the Javitz Center. Most of them were there pushing their greeting cards and calendars for us retailers to buy. Most were much shorter than I expected (but still with unbelievable bodies), most weren't too friendly (they really didn't want to be there with a bunch of gay store owners wanting to touch their pecs and more) . Jeff Stryker was the most uncomfortable - he really didn't like being in crowds, even though his merchandise seemed to sell the best. (Looking back thirty-plus years, maybe he was neurodivergent ?)

I saw Walter Mondale give a campaign speech on Boston Common. Reason I went is because Gerry Ferraro was supposed to have been there too and I wanted to see both of them together. But she ended up making a separate speech in another city. It was raining lightly and Mondale began the speech by saying. "All right, let's get this over with." Mr. Charisma.

R452- my husband supported me when I was starting out. Now, I support us both. I’m lucky my show reruns all day everyday all over the world. For a good time, I was making about. $150,000 per year from residuals. I make considerably less now so I supplement the income with a full time job as a mental health peer counselor. I’ve been directing theater lately and I’m only auditioning for the very interesting projects. I love my manager and agent. I’ve been with them for over 10 years after jumping around a lot. They do their job. I do mine. I’ve had agents drop me in the past. One agent dropped right before I took off. Too bad for them,

thanks for sharing r452. That is interesting. To achieve success (with both finances and fame) within show business is rarified air. I am happy for you. You actors are a special breed, I have never been able to understand how actors can take the constant rejection (auditions, etc) and keep going (it would kill me).

I saw Nick Lachey going into the gym at the Four Seasons in San Francisco. At the same hotel I saw Garrick Utley in the restaurant or whatever it was (seemed more like a very large pub) eating alone, wearing very expensive-looking clothes (gray turtleneck and jacket). Same trip saw George Soros interviewed at Berkley at something sponsored by the Commonwealth Club of California.

Okay, this is a nice story about a celeb, though it wasn’t the first time I met him.
I worked on a play starring Richard Thomas, who is very sweet, BTW. (I suspect he’s bi, just from his nature, but never saw him with boyfriends or anything.)
ANYWAY - there’s an Upper West Side bookstore used in the movie “You’ve Got Mail” that has a big staircase coming down into the main room. I was coming down the stairs one evening after browsing drama books and heard, “__[bold] insert my first name here[/bold] __!”
It was Mr. Thomas across the room, in line at the cash register. The thing is, he has a very distinctive voice that was especially familiar to people back then, even if they didn’t know exactly who it belonged to. So the WHOLE STORE looked up and watched this little scene play out as I glided down these long stairs, talking to him. Then we chatted in line.
It’s silly, but it made me feel special for a few minutes : ) Like a lot of actors, he’s very personable and can create an immediate connection. He’s the kind of person who would make a good friend.

'Casting couch!!! Does it STILL exist?'
It's existed forever so I can't imagine that the #metoo movement could end it.
There are so many actors of comparable abilities and looks before you put all the hundred if not thousands of resumes in the shredder you have to start somewhere.

What is the most well-known show you've worked on? I was a series regular on "Bones."
Whose behavior disappointed/surprised you? David Boreanaz's energy and creativity as a director. He is so quiet and reserved when he's acting.
Do/did you make a comfortable living when acting? Yes.
Casting couch!!! Does it STILL exist? Not in my experience. I did go out with Bryan Singer and one of the X Men producers after X Men opened and the producer said "I can't wait for X-Men 2 auditions!" Make of that what you will.

Robert Mitchum when he was shooting a TV Series at my school. Just passed by smoking and noticed me staring at him starstruck. Charismatic. Gave my little movie buff twink self a little wink.
Was positioned near Ben Kinsley (and Leslie Caron) as an extra in a movie. Just remember a long cold night of waiting and having to sing "The Internationale" over and over.
Prince leaving a small club. Tiny ,elegant. Remember my friend cracking me up saying he looks like a male Gina Lollobrigida.

This isn't an experience I had but I read it at nextdoor.com and it was funny: some lady posted that she was going through the checkout line at WalMart, and the guy in front of her "looked just like Robert Redford, but it couldn't be him because what would he be doing here in this part of the US?" ... he was buying some snack stuff, btw.
And of course, you have to know the inside story, that is, his financial advisor lives in that particular somewhat-but-not-quite Flyoverstan location. So, yes it was him, and FYI, he is there generally a couple of times a year. And he also thinks it's very funny because people will give him "wow, he looks just like Robert Redford" stares but almost never walk up to him, because people can't imagine why he would possibly be there.

Sat next to John Lithgow on a flight. His demeanor was very much ‘Don't speak to me’ so I didn’t. The flight attendant handed him a folded up paper when we landed and said that another passenger asked her to give it to him. He opened it, scanned it quickly, sighed, and then stared out the window.
At a radio station, after giving me an autograph, Corey Hart posed for a picture with the radio execs and with Kim Carnes, who was also there. He gave me a wink and smile when he saw me watching.
Michael York stood next to me at a urinal in Los Angeles but I was too nervous to look.
Outside a hotel I told Rob Lowe that my co-worker thought he smelled good (he’d passed her earlier) and that she wanted to know what he was wearing. He laughed and said ‘hang on let me check’ and then asked his wife who was already getting in their car, and yelled out his answer. I can’t remember what he said.
At a press event I introduced Prince Edward to some people who were featured in a documentary I was working on. He was very polite and engaging, and later made eye contact as I was leaving and I thought for a minute that Britain’s first gay wedding might be in my future.

In the late 1990s, an independent comedy about an Italian family was filmed in my city. The big name from the movie was actress Adrienne Barbeau, who somehow accepted her role, because she knew the young writer / star and wanted to 'help him out'. (At least that is what the paper was reporting at the time). Anyhow, part of the movie (shot in the early Spring) was filmed on my street on a drizzly day - a beautiful house diagonally across the street from me was for sale (and at the time vacant), so they were able to use this house as Barbeau's house in the movie. Not sure if they ever filmed inside, but they did film from the outside (in the middle of my street which they shut down) - take after take of Barbeau coming out the front door, walking down the walkway and getting into a yellow cab. It was interesting to see the small details which they changed each time she exited the front door: I remember first she came out opening an umbrella and wearing a black raincoat, then she came out asjusting a black rainhat, then she came out putting her keys into a handbag, then she came out with no handbag but putting gloves on while walking to the cab, etc. These takes must've gone on for at least a half hour, and you could tell by the end she was frustrated. (A small group of neighbors gathered in front of my house to watch in the drizzle, but I stayed inside watching everything from my front window). In the end it was all for nothing, apparently, as that particular scene didn't make it to the final cut (though maybe it made it to DVD?). Other scenes of my street (filmed from a car the lead actor was driving) did make the cut - you could see a glimpse of the front of my house in one.
Speaking of neighborhoods, I found out last summer that Joy Behar and her first husband lived one street over from me back in the mid-80s when her husband taught at the college in my neighborhood, and Joy was a substitute high school English teacher in the city's school system. I don't think I ever met her during my walks through the neighborhood back then. From time to time, Joy has mentioned living in my city on the show, and always says how much she enjoyed living here those two years (probably because it has a very big Italian culture and some great Italian restaurants).

Sat next to As the World Turns actor Scott Bryce on the subway. He was reading a script and caught me looking at it. He just smiled. Saw All My Children star Julia Barr at a coffee shop. Really, really tiny. Sat in the seat behind Guiding Light actor Vincent Irizzary at a Broadway show. He was alone. Nice hair.
I was seated at a table next to a group including Ben Stiller at a Chicago restaurant. The rest of his group were laughing and having a great time. Stiller sat stone-faced throughout the meal.
by Anonymous | reply 502 | January 26, 2025 12:59 PM |
Vince D’Onofrio was kind as far as I could tell. I was dead serious (and less effective) as an actor back then so I didn’t talk to him while we were on the set. He tried to strike up conversation but I stayed in character.
SJP was nice to me. I was about to do an Off-Bway revival of Starmites (2001) and she seemed interested, saying that her brother was in the original. Mostly, she and Anne Bancroft talked about all their houses though.

r502, I just learned that Stiller is a horror to work with if he's directing/producing. Loves to fire the crew right and left (e.g. he fired his driver for having the driver's dry cleaning in the front seat), and you don't know which Stiller your're going to get on any given day. The average day on Severance is a 16 hour day because he does endless takes. A show like Severance shouldn't be more than 12 hours (average day for us).
I've seen a ton of famous men in person, but it's not really fair, because I work in film/tv.

r507 hmmm...
Patrick Wilson: yes his ass is everything. Looks like Paul Newman's son.
George Clooney: looks like someone's dad, complete with acid washed jeans and big white sneakers, but when he puts on a suit, he's attractive
Ben Stiller: looks exactly the same, wee little man
Anthony Hopkins- a class act, lovely man. Remembers everyone's names.
Al Pacino last year- he's old with a gut. At least his face lift finally settled
Daniel Kaluuya- gentle, quiet, kind guy
Stephen Yun- very serious, quiet, better looking in person
Simu Liu- douchey fratboy. But he can bboy really well.
'John Cho- another serious quiet guy. Also better looking in person
Lewis Pullman- his dad Bill, raised him right. Good guy.
Jason Momoa- was really hot, but became a bloated douchebag
Max Minghella- very humble, dry sense of humor, kinda cute in person
Joaquin Phoenix- quiet, serious, freakin' talented
James Franco- extremely charming, too method though. Really doesn't want to be a handsome leading man, wants to be a craggy character lead like Benecio Del Toro.
Jo Koy- much more attractive in person, but for his big fake teeth. Very kind to crew.
Matt Damon- yes his butt is juicy
Don Cheadle- dry sense of humor, treats the cast and crew well. Doesn't take any shit.
Vin Diesel- off camera, yards of chiffon vomits out of his mouth. Steroid belly. Total jerkwad to the cast and crew.
Jason Statham: shorter than expected, can be difficult with other Alpha action actors in action sequences. I think he's handsome in person.
Dwayne Johnson- looks exactly like he does on screen. When I worked with him, he was fantastic, but now I hear not so much.
Elijah Wood- has those luminous unblinking blue eyes that are slightly creepy (a la Sin City). Big smoker, tiny guy. Loves DJing obscure music. Aesexual vibe.
Jack McBrayer- freakin' funny, very sunny and happy. Surprisingly sharp wit.
Stephen Colbert- one of the wittiest men that I've met in my life. Also very kind, but doesn't take shit.
Bill Murry- asshole, but his brothers are kind
Michael Jackson- scarily thin- his legs were like my arms. Fragile looking, but when on stage, became Michael Jackson. He did have vitiligo.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II: Incredibly handsome man, and knows it. Sloppy personal habits. Also aesexual vibe. If you look at his IG, no women except his mother...
John Waters- looks exactly the same in person, very dry sense of humor. I adore him.
Pre-Guardians Chris Pratt- chunky, sweaty, prankster, loved showing his naked ass like Will Ferrell
Adam Scott- can be handsome or odd looking depending on the lighting and angle. Good guy.
David Hasselhoff- much taller in person, has a great smiling resting face. Pleasant to work with.
Cary Elwes: a total doll, I adore him. I worked with him when he was heavy (gained weight from a back injury on a stunt from Kiss the Girls), and am happy to see that he's thinned out.
Michael Bolton- asshole. Also hair plugs.
Milo Ventimiglia - has a lot of charisma, good looking in person, good guy. Sad that he lost his house in the L.A. fires.
Tyler Christopher- lovely guy, so handsome in person. It was shocking when he died, because I had no idea that he had substance issues.
Heavy Jack Osbourne: had a great work ethic
Billy Zane-really gorgeous double lashed eyes. Very smug.
Nestor Campbell- another gorgeous double lashed eye guy. Very pleasant, good guy.
Keanu Reeves- surprisingly tall, pale, with gray beard/hair. Very quiet, but incredibly kind to any non crew that comes up to him or people yelling out at him- he'll always wave back or talk to them.

Sylvester Stallone: much shorter than expected, very red (niacin?), and has way more tattoos than I thought
Wyatt Russell: a bit self absorbed (much like his sister Kate, who is very self absorbed), very attractive in person
R514, both look like they have basketballs attached to their backsides. Wilson's is not hairy (he'll change in front of you if needed).

Forgot to add:
Colin Ferrell: What a guy- loves kids, dogs, extremely helpful and gregarious, the guy can dance.
Vince Vaughn: has that gray pallor of a smoker, also surprisingly tall, also gregarious
Luke Wilson: has that attractive guy next door, very nice and lowkey
Chris Klein: very pinched looking in person, was subdued at the time (it was when it was announced Katie Holmes was pregnant)
Owen Wilson: very demanding, overly concerned with how he looks. Likes to use La Mer, which I haven't heard of any other man ask for
Jeffery Tambor- extremely intelligent, has interesting stories, bit of a prankster

It's unprofessional but Ben Stiller is an asshole for taking away that guy's job over something like that. He's not talented enough to justify that level of cuntiness.

I had the biggest crush on Aidan Quinn...He beats up his girlfriends.” I wonder if that’s true.
One of him does.

I told my embarrassing story on here once - My office building lobby was all marble and echo-ey. I noticed barely famous but hunky Fabio checking in at the reception desk and yelled out "I love you Fabio!" which sounded really loud and is unlike me to fangirl out like that in a public place esp. considering I was a guy in my 40s in business attire at the time. He just looked over at me, gave a little smile and said thank you.

^^ I love that!
It would have been even funnier if you had a friend with you who had to drag you into the elevator…

R497. Moonstruck interiors were filmed in Toronto but they did shoot some exteriors in NYC. I believe the house you were looking for is located in Brooklyn Heights.

r538, one of my best female friends went out on a date with Fabio. It was going along well until she went to his house. As soon as she saw a motorcycle displayed in the kitchen, she was PEACE OUT.

I love the dry cleaning in the front seat story. Honestly it does sound like a Lauren Bacall parody. 'What is your dry cleaning doing in the front seat of this car even though I'm alone and always sit in the back seat?! Did I give you permission?! Do you think a star like me would even entertain the thought I would be in a car with your dry cleaning?! Do you know who I am?! You are fired you disrespectful insect! Are you anybody?!'

I hope the driver responded, 'Well fuck you, you no talent nepo baby who couldn't get a job as drug store clerk if you didn't have famous parents!'

Poor Jerry and Anne. They seemed like such nice, down-to-earth people.
After Jerry Stiller retired, the NYT reported he would take a lawn chair out to the sidewalk in front of his building and kibitz with anyone who wanted to stop and talk. He also called Divine "my second wife."

And besides, he's straight.

Not men but I ran into (literally) Greta Garbo somewhere in the East 50s. She came around a corner, walking briskly and we collided. She gave me a startled look and then kept on going.
I saw Lauren Bacall sometime in the 70s walking up Madison Avenue. She was wearing an impeccable tweed suit. You could tell it was expensive the way it moved along with her stride. She looked every inch the star. I had just seen her in Woman of the Year on Broadway. I remember how she appeared in the opening scene on a platform that slowly turned as the spotlight hit her and then stopped short, causing her to almost tumble onto the stage. She gave the audience a WTF look and began the show.

Saw Patrick Wilson jogging shirtless near Times Square a few summers ago. Those are some BIG TITS, whew.

Saw Donny Osmond ca.1990 in an Irvine, California supermarket parking lot. I lived in Irvine and so did he. I wouldn't have noticed him if not for a couple of women squealing which called attention to him. I didn't interact with him but he looked good and responded pleasantly to the women smiling and waving as he kept walking.
My roommates saw him several times and even exchanged small talk with him. Said he was friendly and pleasant, his wife not so much.

r555, a few summers ago, he would have been bulking up for Aquaman 2.

R554 I don't know, I guess I think that if your friend thought Fabio was going to have perfect taste, she was probably barking up the wrong tree in the first place.

Re Donny Osmond: Claudia Lamb, who played Heather on Mary Hartman, has written about the fact that the Osmonds were on the next soundstage. She said the kids were perfectly nice and would play with her on the backlot, but the parents treated the Mary Hartman cast like Beelzebub incarnate.
One day they were riding bikes and the girls at the gate screaming for Donny managed to break through and start stampeding toward them. Donny looked at Claudia and said, "RUN."

Claudia Lamb ? That ugly little kid on Mary Hartman ? She wrote her memoir or something ? And you actually read it ?

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa Chatted me up years back, went on a coffee date next day. Took off like a bat out of hell when I told him I'd recently tested poz. The sheer terror and bewilderment in his eyes was quite interesting to behold.

I met Muhammad Ali as he stood in the middle of a gate waiting area at La Guardia struggling for ten minutes to put a pen into his sport-coat's breast pocket as he was surrounded by about fifty travelers watching in a circle around him at a distance of seven feet, with his co-traveler/assistant standing even farther away with his head turned.
I use the term "met" because it felt much more personal than "seen in person" can express.

I met Greg Louganis on the California AIDS Ride back in 1997. We were at a lunch stop, and decided to partake of some McDonald's, and Greg (who was also on the ride) invited us to sit with him and his buddies. He was absolutely charming, and a pleasure to talk to.

I saw Anthony Bourdain filming a video on the street.
Saw Andre Leon Talley at Lincoln Center.
Sat next to Willem DaFoe at a Famous Famiglia pizza shop on 111th and Broadway. He was talking to some very good looking younger guy and I don’t know if it was his son or a friend or a Columbia drama major. I didn’t realize it was him until I was getting ready to leave.
The guy who played Henry on As the World Turns lived in the same neighborhood and I saw him around several times. Spoke to him once as we were in line at a Chipotle. He was really nice.

R570 A good friend of mine met Greg Louganis when he was making an appearance at an SF bookstore back in the 90s after he had written his autobiography. Louganis took a liking to my friend and invited him to dinner.
R570 Within a month, Louganis was begging my friend to leave SF and come live with him in LA. My friend had a good stable job in SF and I warned him not to do it, but my friend, being starstruck and lured by the thought of living among the rich elite gays in SO CA, quit his job, packed up everything, and moved to LA to live with Louganis.
Almost from the start, Louganis was a nasty prick who would berate my friend, disappear for days without telling my friend where he was, and would bring men back to the house and have sex with them, not even trying to be discreet. After a year of emotional abuse, my friend came back to SF.
To this day, every time I see Louganis on TV acting like some kind of gay cherub, I scoff.
