Pacific Palisades is lovely, but they have been prone to wildfires for decades now. This fire was especially out of control, so the odds of your house getting engulfed was dramatically increased.

There was a quite bit of media coverage when Suzanne Somers' house burned down. A news crew was around when she went to see what was left. The tabloids published tons of pictures of her crying in her car.

The Wise and Foolish Builders
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Same reason why these wealthy people continue to build in Florida and other coastal locations hit by hurricanes each year.
EVERYONE'S property insurance and auto insurance will be going up the next few years because of this tragedy. These insurance companies aren't going to be paying out for lost properties and autos without help from every American who buys insurance.

In a weird way, it's kind of comforting to see that even they aren't protected. It makes them seem less special. No amount of wealth or resources saved them. It's still sad, but the fact they're sharing it makes them seem like everyone else affected (except they have a lot more resources to bounce back, of course, let's not forget that).

I wonder how many of the people who lost their home and property were fully insured?
by Anonymous | reply 75 | January 9, 2025 1:35 AM |
Correct me if I'm wrong but if the properties or homes were mortgaged, they had to be insured. I believe that's a requirement from every lending institution these days. No ?
by Anonymous | reply 76 | January 9, 2025 1:41 AM |
Once the mortgage is paid off it is not. I bet most of the celebrities paid for their property in cash. I guess my point is since insurance companies are more reluctant to cover homes that are in high hurricane or flooding or fire risk zones, they may not want to cover these areas.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | January 9, 2025 1:46 AM |
They should reclaim the burned out land & put in bike lanes, outdoor kitchens & gyms (stuff that won't easily catch fire the next time around).

[quote] Once the mortgage is paid off it is not.
So I was correct - while the property is mortgaged, they have to have it insured. I knew once it was paid off, it is optional by the homeowner.
As for celebrities, I'm not sure how many plop down cash for their home - why give up all their cash in one shot when they can mortgage through a bank and use the bank's money ? Especially with rates so low over the past few years. Their own money could be earning higher returns in other investments. I've always heard wealthy people (celebrities and non-celebs) never use their own money to buy anything - they always use the bank's money.

I’m seeing some people on social media enjoying the schadenfreude of all these celebrities losing their houses. On one hand, yes, in many cases these people have the means to keep living and will financially survive it, but the truth is that it is devastating to lose your home (especially in a fire) no matter how much money you have or how lavish it was or wasn’t. Losing your domestic space like that is traumatizing and people shouldn’t be reveling in that.

Diane Warren lost her beach house. She was live on The View this morning in NYC. I wonder how she felt being on the opposite side of the country as all hell was breaking loose in Cali. She tweeted today: "Warren also reassured her 249K social media followers that the chickens, ducks, goats, cows, and horses living at her rescue ranch 'are okay, which is the most important thing. Stay safe everyone."

R91 Cameron mathison says he was born in 1969, so that makes him 55. However, over the years, many sources found documentation he was born in 1964, so that would really make him 60. I have a feeling it's closer to 60 and he shaved off five years when he first got started in the 90s.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | January 9, 2025 11:32 AM |
Before anyone asks for "proof" from the past 30 years, I don't have them. So let me rephrase: "Many sources have claimed to have had documentation over the past 30 years on Mathison, saying he was born in 1964."

[quote]My heart aches for all of those celebrities who have lost their homes.
Really ? My heart aches for EVERYONE who has lost their homes. Celebrities, non-celebrities, rich, poor, young, old. It doesn't matter who or where they are in life - these people have lost everything no matter who they are. No amount of fame, money or insurance can bring back what they've really lost.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | January 9, 2025 11:42 AM |
A reporter has said on MSNBC private insurance companies have not been renewing or writing new insurance policies for years - they have left California. Most of these homes have insurance through the state of California (The Fair Plan), and it's not going to cover much. She mentioned these people who still have private companies insuring them have 'bare basics' which doesn't cover much. These homeowners now have to document every single thing which they lost in the fire, and see if they are covered for it (with whatever policy they have and with whom).
And as I said in another post yesterday - she reiterated everyone in this country will see their insurance rates rise drastically because of this disaster. It's a real tragedy.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | January 9, 2025 12:00 PM |
FAIR Plan = You-shouldn’t-live-here insurance. They have it in other states too like Louisiana that have hurricane risk.

Home owner’s insurance doesn’t cover wildfire, and a lot of people have had their fire insurance summarily cancelled in recent months and years. Semi-related, my parents had their own insurance cancelled because Farmers thought they saw a loose shingle on their ten year old roof. They live in the South, but not in a disaster prone area. Insurance is just. going to get worse and worse until it’s completely broken.

Let's not exaggerate - the stretch of Malibu homes along PCH that burned were at Las Tunas beach, which abuts Pacific Palisades. All of those structures are gone, but I don't believe the fire has stretched westward yet, to Big Rock Beach and that area. Hopefully I'm not wrong, it's a shame to lose that beachfront property.
r49 Dylan lives way up on Point Dume, they are not in the fire zone (yet). He's fine for now. r90 Affleck's new house in Brentwood is near the current fire perimeter but not in it, he's fine for now. That article mentioned celebrities living in the general area, not those who actually lost homes.
r152 Malibu Colony is a few miles westward of the fire zone, they aren't out of the woods but aren't in imminent danger.
Christian Bale owns a ranch in the back of Sullivan Canyon that appears to be just next to the current fire zone/perimeter, very close. There are other celebs in that rural area, they're probably the most famous people at risk.
by Anonymous | reply 163 | January 9, 2025 5:23 PM |
...and I revise my post at r163, the fires did reach Big Rock Beach in Malibu as Moonshadows was there, and is now gone. It's crazy to think of much expensive property has been lost in this.

*IF* the Cal Fire map I'm looking at is accurate....it would appear that about a dozen oceanfront homes, east of Big Rock Drive, are still standing. Fran Drescher's house is in that strand of homes.
If that pocket of homes really did survive, I'm guessing it's probably because they are directly opposite that heavily graded section of hillside (with the retaining wall) east of Big Rock Drive, on which there was far less vegetation compared to a 1/2 mile in either direction. (mostly just grasses, with relatively few of those highly flammable/explosive bushes & shrubs).
See: Google street view, 19734 Pacific Coast Highway.

Will Rogers’ home: "The actor’s ranch house, part of Will Rogers State Historic Park, was destroyed in the Palisades fire. In the 1920s Rogers built a 31-room home with 11 bathrooms, a guesthouse, a golf course, stables and a corral on about 360 acres. In 1944 the compound and grounds became a park and museum after his widow, Betty, donated them to the state. “The Rogers family is devastated by the loss of the California ranch and the overwhelming loss of the community,” Jennifer Rogers-Etcheverry, the actor’s great-granddaughter, said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to all those neighbors who have lost their homes.”
Topanga Ranch Motel: The historic row of rustic cabins, built in 1919 and once owned by William Randolph Hearst, was one of the last remaining examples of early 20th century bungalow motels. The motel had fallen on hard times, but in September, the state park system and partners promised to refurbish the motel rather than demolish it. “California State Parks mourns the loss of these treasured natural and cultural resources, and our hearts go out to everyone impacted by the devastating fires in the Los Angeles area,” State Parks Director Armando Quintero said in a statement.
Theatre Palisades: The theater, founded in 1963 by three TV writers, appeared in news reports to have been largely destroyed in the wildfire. The organization’s website said that all operations at its 125-seat community theater are suspended until further notice.

[quote]Perhaps the best way to protect your home is to have a large moat surrounding your property.
If you were a millionaire movie star, that is a really good idea, but not because it would keep the fire away by itself. With strong enough winds and hot enough conditions, embers will blow vast distances. And I know if you've got eucalypts around, in a big enough fire the heat will make their leaves release eucalyptus oil into the air and the fire will skip across the treetops burning on oil, which makes it super-fast and terrifying. I'm not sure how many other trees have that property.
But going back to the moat, if you had plenty of $$ you could organise to hook the moat up to a system with its own generator that would continuously pump water all over the roof and the outside of the house throughout immediate fire danger, and to which you could hook up your own high-pressure hose to cope with stray embers. The key problems with fighting big wildfires are electricity and water being unavailable. You could use your pool, but it's not enough water to last very long.

If people don't have or can't get insurance for their homes, are we going to see a considerable exodus from California in the coming years? How long is it going to take to rebuild both houses and businesses? Some of the roads need to be rebuilt and most of the ground has been reduced to ash and rubble. How big of a landfill is going to be needed for 30,000 acres of debris?

And there was already such a major housing shortage in the LA area as it is. Where are all of these now-homeless people going to go, especially if they can't or aren't able to re-build where they had been. Talk about a severe real estate crunch.

You can substitute the thousands who are not celebrities and perhaps show a bit of sorrow rather than the glee that is supposed to be funny or witty on this thread because famous people somehow deserve this kind of tragedy.
Losing your home, pets perhaps, possessions, heirlooms never mind the financial devastation is probably second only to dying. This thread’s cynicism and cruelty only serves to help me understand the rise of MAGA and dehumanization of others (including famous people) by their fellow man.
I’m 71 and have been amazed since the rise of MAGA of how terrible many people are. It’s all on full display on this thread. And barely a word on the causes of all this.

Hanks lives on Casale Road, in a massive mansion overlooking Rustic Canyon and Will Rogers State Park. His house was spared, however the home directly adjacent-above and to the north of him, at 1601 San Onofre Drive, burnt all the way down.
The massive compound at 1790 Alta Mura Road, two house above/north of Hanks and Wilson, one of the largest and most spectacular homes in the area, owned by the family of the late Warner Brothers Records mogul Mo Ostin, is gone.

The facts behind this concept are buried in the 3,000 posts in this thread but it's fascinating. One of the houses in the path of the fire didn't burn because the owner used the concept of Passive House Principles when it was built.

Beautiful words from John Mayer (whose house is unaffected)
[quote] johnmayer This is the most valuable thing I own. It's a folder of photos of my father, spanning his life from being a baby, an educator, a husband and a father. It's the only evidence of his life that will exist over time. These are the "documents" you read about people taking from their homes. When you hear someone say they've lost everything in a fire, this is much of that everything, if not all of it. Those who say they'll be okay still have their folders and their albums. Those who are inconsolable have lost them. Just behind the immeasurable loss of life is the loss of the proof of life. I don't practice prayer but tonight I will say one for everyone who no longer has these items. It's not about the art and the collectibles. It's the photos, the letters, the class rings, the eyeglasses and the things we keep to remind us that those we loved were here. May those who have lost so much find some semblance of hope and support from their family and friends. Stay safe, look out for yourself and for one another, and trust that humanity and all it entails, though sometimes hard to see, is alive and well. This is truly devastating.

I wonder if there will be a push for more monolithic dome structures to be built in California when the rebuilding starts. The problem is there's currently an enormous amount of red tape involved in the permitting for some reason.
While a bit sci-fi looking, they are the only structure that can withstand tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, fire, and even automatic weaponry. They're extremely energy efficient and resilient. Plus, they're wildly cheap to build and building can be completed in under a week.
Apparently living in dome structures is also extremely calming and centering. They're the housing of the future in extreme climate change.

by Anonymous | reply 335 | January 11, 2025 3:34 AM |
R334 There is more information about its design and materials on this site. There's also a ton on YouTube videos about them. I fell into a bit of a rabbit hole researching them after hurricane Helene hit.
Some of them, like the one on this page look very Kubrick-esque, but you can make them look any style you' like. You can make them look like a Malibu beach house or a charming little Hobbit cottage. I think the only limiting thing aestethically would be potentially needing to have a lot of furniture custom-made.
"A forest fire ran over a Monolithic Dome home in California. The home was unscathed. An EF-4 tornado struck a dome in Ohio. The dome saved the owners’ lives. The eye of a category five hurricane passed over a home in Florida. The homeowner sat safely inside and filmed it. There are dozens, maybe hundreds, of stories where a Monolithic Dome survived a disaster. We don’t hear about most of them because the house remained undamaged. Is it a disaster if nothing breaks?
The key to the Monolithic Dome’s strength is the double-curved concrete shell. When an object strikes the dome wall, the forces distribute across the entire structure. The outer air-form membrane and polyurethane foam act as additional buffers and can capture flying debris."

R1 and R21 -- Bizarrely, after he sobbed about it on CNN, it seems like James Woods's house didn't burn down after all. It survived... "a miracle!"
by Anonymous | reply 400 | January 13, 2025 4:17 PM |
If you werent too busy switching accounts, you'd have seen that was already posted.
by Anonymous | reply 401 | January 13, 2025 4:31 PM |
I can't stand Woods's politics, but he's in his late 70's, alone in life (he does mention a "wife" although I don't see any notation that he's married) and had to flee his home due to a catastrophic fire. He truly believed it was gone, based on what he saw when he left and what his neighbors told him. I don't blame him on getting emotional over it on tv, or being overjoyed and grateful that his house survived. And I'm sure there is plenty of smoke damage to contend with, at his home and any of the other standing houses.

by Anonymous | reply 404 | January 13, 2025 4:40 PM |
James Woods was photographed some years back with a woman in her early 30s and she was listed as fiancee. Maybe, they have married.
I think Woods is one of those actors who never became a mega wealthy and the house might be one of the few major assets he has and he was probably overjoyed because it's still standing and he doesn't have to deal with rebuilding or finding another home.

R401 What are you, a bitter nine-year-old girl? "Switching accounts?" What does that even mean? Is that what you do, "Anonymous"? How fucking insipid, but by all means, enjoy your conspiracy theories. And, knowing that your type gets its panties into a twist over such "crimes," I did search "Woods" and no such update showed up. Sorry for the many valuable seconds this robbed of your productive life. Hope tomorrow is a better day for you.

Can confirm that Fran Drescher's house on PCH survived (although I would imagine there's some smoke damage). I saw an aerial shot of it on the local news.
by Anonymous | reply 407 | January 13, 2025 6:49 PM |
How do you remedy smoke damage? I would imagine everything would need to be repainted in side, probably anything fabric thrown away, hard surfaces would be okay with a cleaning I would think...all of that still better than the alternative.

r408, a co-worker of mine today said that even though all the windows and doors were closed, the entire interior of their house is covered with ash. She was trying to figure out how to clean it all off. So smoke and ash cleaning.
by Anonymous | reply 414 | January 14, 2025 4:25 AM |
My mother’s house floors would be covered in ash daily during the worst of the Australia fires in late 2019, and there were not even any fires within 20km. Good thing she had wooden floorboards and ceramic tiles and no carpets. The wind blew so much ash over, there were days when we couldn’t see our hands in front of us.
And we bought dirt cheap 3M n95 masks, which came in handy in early 2020.
We had to take down all her curtains to be dry cleaned and beat and shampooed the rugs.
by Anonymous | reply 415 | January 14, 2025 12:01 PM |
R414 She WON'T be able to clean it all off - not by herself or with friends or family. She needs to call in professionals (and good luck with that - they will be in the highest demand and charging premiums) - the ones who clean up after disasters.
Can't recall the name, but the commercial is always running in my area: "How do you make what happened look like it didn't even happen ? Let'er rain Randy !" They guarantee if your workplace or home is 'hit by disaster', you call them and they will make it look pristine and ready to move in again.
These 'disaster clean up companies' are franchised all over the country - if they were smart, they would all head over to LA.

It was Ryan's house apparently R421
Following Ryan’s death, sources told The Post that the actor left behind a $30 million estate.
The estate included the $5 million Malibu beachfront home, which he bought in 1976 for just $151,000, as well as an Andy Warhol portrait of Fawcett he fought to keep.

If she's tagging the LAPD, she must be in the Palisades, as Malibu is not in Los Angeles.
by Anonymous | reply 449 | January 17, 2025 9:00 PM |
Good point, R449 -- you're right, that would indicate Palisades. I knew she lived somewhere around Palisades/Malibu because of the Instagram photos hiking above the Palisades & Malibu, and/or walking on the beach in Malibu.
I saw some photos (including two interior photos) of Fran Drescher's house, which has been yellow-tagged, meaning 10%-25% of it was damaged. Looks like most or the damage was confined to the eastern exterior of the house, in the walkway between her house & her next-door neighbor. A tree, or something, caught on fire from embers being blown between the houses? A bathroom sustained a fair amount of damage -- a large window blew out, with burns around the frame.
Here's a shot of her living room. (Compare to her Instagram post of Dec 25).

r439 I think she's the one who filmed a short video before leaving her house with a G-Wagen in the driveway, and then later pics showed that same SUV burnt to a crisp along with the house. Guess Fletcher Jones is already helping get her in a new one.

I have some not-very-religious Jewish friends who dig Christmas. They get all emotional at Charlie Brown Christmas special.
