While the 438 million worldwide gross would be respectable for many films, Gladiator 2 cost an astounding 350 million.
Gladiator 2 was a flop

That’s why studios charge more for streaming or streaming partnership deals than in the past. Streaming is just important as BO and now factored into the profit margins from jump street.

What R1 said. No studio really expects a movie to turn a profit purely from theatrical.

I am the Earth Mother and it was a flop.

No studio expects to turn a profit from theatrical, but a film is expected to hit a break even point to not be considered a flop.
For Gladiator 2, that break even point was $700 million.

It was disastrous. Mescal is a great actor in "intimate" roles but was horribly miscast in Gladiator 2.

R4 Yeah but movies make money after the theatrical release from rentals and streaming. Not as much as they used to but they still make money.
Something like Joker 2 is a flop. It will probably never make its money back.

Joker 2 is a colossal flop of epic proportions. Perhaps the biggest of its kind since that Kevin Costner flick.

Agree with r5, he was distractingly bad.
I don't know that people want to see these sweeping epic films anymore either, they're so seldomly done well. And Ridley has as many stinkers under his belt as he has hits. He's catering to an audience of years past.

Gladiator 2 was criticized for being garish and campy, not sweeping.

I don’t get the harsh criticism of Mescal’s performance. Or am I just Mary mistaking sexual attraction for good acting.

Gladiator 2 was awesome and I am not in the minority. It currently has an 85% on popcorn meter, that’s rotten tomatoes audience score. People who have actually seen it, really enjoyed the film.

I personally believe he was just as good as his dad, Russel Crowe. Gladiator 1 is just a much superior film.

Gladiator 2 was a poor imitation of the original.
The CGI baboons and the sharks were laughably bad. The plot was not good. The twin emperors were unintentionally hilarious. The was absolutely no gravitas to the movie… at all.
Paul did fine, not excellent, but fine. Denzel really stole the show except in the ludicrous finale.
Paul needs to star in a gay rom com with copious nudity.

I watched it on New Year's Eve and fell asleep about halfway through. It just didn't engage me the way the original did. Most of it felt like a lazy remake of the original. Paul was definitely miscast; hate on Russell Crowe all you want, but he was one of the reasons the original worked.

It looked dumb, even by today's low low standards.

Glaaaaaaaaadiator

I just watched it on streaming.
It's homophobic crap. Caters to teenage Trump fanboys.
The "twin" emperors are poorly conceived characters.

Caracalla was not effeminate but rather hyper-masculine. A true brute. And Caracalla and Geta, whom he killed in his mother's arm, were not twins.

Gladiator 1 is no “Spartacus” (1960). But it hums along. Gladiator 2 is like “The Silver Chalice” (1954) – Paul Newman’s film debut.

Gladiator II was a huge disappointment.
