Blondie's "Call Me." Their biggest hit, and Debbie Harry at her physical peak.
But the band was pissed because Giorgio Moroder took the song away from them and produced it with just Debbie's vocals and his own session players.
So the #1 song of 1980 had no official video, even though Blondie had released a full video album the year before.

R12, the Blondie/"Call Me" situation has been reported in bits and pieces over the years.
In this interview, Giorgio Moroder's right-hand man Harold Faltermeyer describes what happened during recording. Basically Chris Stein and Jimmy Destri were a mess:
[quote]Mr. [Chris] Stein was recording his guitar. And I was engineering at the time, so I remember that the guitar of Chris .... whenever he played it it was just like noise... I said, “Chris, what are you doing here? This sounds like shit... "you cannot believe what I heard. It was like hiss and buzz and ground problems and everything on his guitar ... it was unacceptable to record."
[quote]"I’m keen to everything new but if it’s just technical problems and this one didn’t really sound, it was terrible. We got them to do the performance and then I had a talk to the keyboarder. I said, “Yeah, I have another idea for this and that.” And then we tried to record it. We couldn’t get this stuff in sync and then Giorgio said, “OK, guys. This is it. We go back to Los Angeles.” Then they said, “Well, the record is not finished yet.” “We finish it back in Los Angeles.” So we took the tapes back and we finished it and then we had rather serious arguments with the band because I played the solo part on the song ... The keyboarder would have like to play it and he didn’t really like it what I did but, anyway, the thing was out and it was a huge hit."
The band basically disowned "Call Me." They could have put it on "Eat to the Beat" but didn't. No video. No promo push. Until oops, it became the #1 song of 1980.
It's really a Debbie Harry solo record. And she crushed it — the lyrics and that sexy, silvery-metallic vocal; it may be her best.

Everything instrumental on "Call Me" is Giorgio Moroder's session players and Faltermeyer.
Debbie is credited as writer and lead vocal.
Blondie the band is credited only as vocals. That had to have burned them, because women didn't just step out on their band — uh, I guess cuck in today's terminology — like that.

I'd do Debbie Harry in a microsecond even though she's old enough to be my mother. That woman is fire!

Because "Call Me" made Blondie the biggest pop band in the world for a minute, their record label forced them to try and record "Autoamerican" with Giorgio Moroder instead of Mike Chapman.
The band dutifully produced some demos. Shockingly, the sessions were a disaster and fell apart almost instantly.
I remember reading an interview with Moroder where he bitched about how terrible Chris Stein and Jimmy Destri were and how they were always fighting.
Rapture and Tide Is High made Blondie even bigger. But if Moroder had gotten his hands on Live It Up and Angels on the Balcony, Autoamerican could've been a truly classic early-'80s electronic album. In the "Live It Up" demo, you the potential for a blend of "Call Me" and Moroder's later work with Berlin.

There are a few lengthy comments with links on this Reddit thread about whether or not there’s an official video for Madonna’s “Holiday.” Interesting info…
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 11, 2025 10:48 AM |
I always assumed that odd “Holiday” video where they’re dancing in front of a person lounging behind that glass window was the official video, but it was so weird no one ever played it. It’s usual, but it’s so blah. There are few close ups. It looks like someone recorded a play from the balcony of a theater.

The Wanderer - Donna Summer
No More Tears - Streisand / Summer
On the Radio - Donna Summer
I always wondered why Moroder gave 'Call Me' to Debbie Harry and not Donna Summer, whom he had hit after hit with. At the time, Moroder was working on Summer's new-wave "The Wanderer" album, and "Call Me" would've fit in nicely with her vocals.

When they toured in 1981, Devo would often open with a theme they'd created that usually led into their song "Going Under." That song became a fan favorite, but they never released a video for it. A couple years later, Jan Hammer used "Going Under" as the background music in a segment featured in "Miami Vice" and the song became a popular tune on the show's Season 1 soundtrack album.

There are a lot of great older songs that don’t have videos simply because the songs came out prior to MTV.
