Surfer rides record-breaking 108 ft wave in Half Moon Bay, California
The video says Santa Cruz, but this took place 50 miles north at HMB closer to SF. While this hasn't been verified by Guiness Book yet, the previous record was 89 ft. in Portugal. It took 18 months to verify that one
What an amazing video. I got goosebumps watching. The guy's so thrilled!

Be sure to watch it on YouTube for full screen view. Here's more information.

I thought they did that shit all the time. You mean the waves a usually smaller than that?

Yes. These waves occurred during a pretty massive winter storm a couple of days before Christmas. The water temperature is ~ 55°.
More action during the same day.

It's not like he rode on the top of the 108 foot wave. He was pretty close to the bottom of the wave the whole time.

This is the previous record. A much longer, more impressive ride. The water was more hospitable.

Ha, I love Datalounge folks saying, "well, he wasn't all that" about a surfer riding the largest wave ever. The Mavericks wave is harder, sloppier, more dangerous (rocks near shore) than the waves at Nazare. This wave, 108 ft tall, was actually pretty well-formed for Mavericks. At least two surfers have died at Mavericks on the big waves.
The same swell of this storm broke up the Santa Cruz pier. Don't fuck with Mother Ocean.

Waaaay larger than waves during an average winter storm. Interesting information about the geology that creates tge waves.
[QUOTE]After a strong winter storm in the northern Pacific Ocean, waves can routinely crest at over 25 ft (8 m) and top out at over 60 ft (18 m). The break is caused by an unusually shaped underwater rock formation.

I liked HMB when I went. Not much there really. We ate at that restaurant that is known for the waves slamming against the windows.
The only reason we stopped is because I wanted to see what the price of gas was! I miss Cackle Cackle and all the characters from the old days.

Yes, I remember Cackle Cackle! Twenty years has it been?

My link didn't take. Let's try this again.

Cackle cackle would be proud

Yes, but he’d be scandalized at the price of gas in HMB now!
He just vanished one day. I think he was one of our oldest posters and quite old the last time he posted. I can’t remember when that was, maybe 15 years ago but it might have been 20.
Hopefully one day Muriel will make an archive. In spite of all the pointless bitchery, this place is the last man standing as far as the gay internet goes and is a unique and valuable collection of gay culture from a time when we were still dying from AIDS to today, when we can get married and run for President.

My brain processes images weirdly, so it took me a bit to make out the actual surfer--to me it looked like old Elon Musk (pre- his most recent tuneups) in goony profile.

Your post omitted the original tweet claiming such, r18

What original tweet, R19? I'm not on Twitter, and don't follow surfing.

R17 - Maybe it's a confabulation or false memory on my part, but I remember someone posting to tell us Cackle Cackle had gone into nursing care. Does this ring a bell?
Either way, I'm perfectly content to imagine Alo's surfer body was slightly inhabited by Cackle Cackle and has shared in the the spirit.

The one claiming it was Musk on the surf board. The picture is a subtweet with cut off information about who posted.

It just doesn’t look bigger than those tow-ins they do in Hawaii to me. Maybe the ocean seems bigger there.

Yes R6 is definitely phenomenal. But good for the new guy too.

I meant the ride was more phenomenal looking, r24. And the geology beneath the waves at Nazare are geologically safer. A huge under-water canyon propelling surfers vs. underwater potentially crushing rocket that propels the exciting surf?

[QUOTE]When they reached the wave, Slebir let go of the tow and started hurtling down the near-vertical face of the wave. There was no time to look back to see how big it was. His only sense of the size came from how unbelievably fast he was going.
[QUOTE]Slebir figures he was doing 40 or 50 mph, but the wave was so huge it was sucking water up off the reef in front of him at nearly the same speed, so he felt like he was slowing down. That’s a sensation he’d experienced only once or twice before, so he knew he was in the barrel of something so big it could kill him. “Don’t fall,” he remembers thinking.
That speed and momentum would be sure death to anyone. Jesus, their athleticism! And their trusted tow drivers?

"potentially crushing ROCKS at r25."

Slebir also reported incredible. intense friction never-before-experienced beneath his board as the water churned.

Yes, I remember that too: The Price of Gas in Half-Moon Bay threads. For long-time posters, there needs to be some kind of DL wellness check

Harold, aren't you a "surfer dude" now? I'll shout you a bus pass to Half Moon Bay, as long as you also take your wife out on the water with you.

R27 retype the whole statement because your repair doesn't make it any clearer.
