Times Square New Years Party—Capitalism Fail

I just watched the ushering in of the New Year on TV.

My God, Times Square is the epitome of how awful capitalism can be. Screens everywhere trying to entice us to buy thing, performers no one has ever heard of pretending they’re celebrities we need to pay attention to, stupid TV hosts saying and doing nothing of any importance that we’ll talk about endlessly as if it affects our lives at all, and on and on.

by Anonymousreply 48January 1, 2025 7:12 PM

Yet you watched.

by Anonymousreply 1January 1, 2025 4:12 AM

R1, because capitalism separates us from our friends and families to work and makes us think watching TV is some communal event connecting us

by Anonymousreply 2January 1, 2025 4:13 AM

It’s all to distract us as the rich run away with everyone’s money. bread and circus, folks

by Anonymousreply 3January 1, 2025 4:15 AM

Notice how with those Times Square advertising screens, you really can't make out anything. They all cancel one another out. It all blurs together.

Yet the dumb old "Camel" sign remains memorable and iconic. Admiral, Canadian Club, Bond, Castro...I can still see them.

How shocking.

For a different experience next year, how about a trip to China, Cuba, Laos, or Vietnam for a Communist New Years Eve. That way you can compare the two and determine who does it better.

by Anonymousreply 6January 1, 2025 4:20 AM

Yeah, let's bring back cigarette billboards! Who cares how deadly cigs are, the billboards were "iconic."

by Anonymousreply 7January 1, 2025 4:22 AM

I have friends who are visiting Hanoi in Vietnam. They seem to be having a great New Years

Um, when you go to Chinese cities, you see they are the cities of the 21st century while NYC is stuck in the 20th. Shanghai and Beijing will blow your mind with their tech, cleanliness, and efficiency

You seem to be stuck in the 1970’s

by Anonymousreply 10January 1, 2025 4:25 AM

R6 - yeah the jokes on you - Vietnam is a great country and I've heard good things about Laos.

by Anonymousreply 11January 1, 2025 4:25 AM

The guy ranting about communists doesn’t even have a passport. He still thinks the US is the greatest country ever.

Go see the world and see how so much of it has surpassed the US

by Anonymousreply 12January 1, 2025 4:26 AM

How about New Year's in Germany, where you can get held down and finger banged by Mohammed and his friends?

by Anonymousreply 13January 1, 2025 4:28 AM

R13 - I'm listening...

by Anonymousreply 14January 1, 2025 4:30 AM

All I know is, is that someone is on a tear here starting umpteen new threads to, for some reason, bury umpteen others that people were actually interested in.

Or am I imagining things (I don't think so)?

by Anonymousreply 15January 1, 2025 4:31 AM

Be careful OP, that kind of free thinking is going to get you put on the list!

by Anonymousreply 16January 1, 2025 4:32 AM

Free thinking? Nah. Groupthink is more like it. Something is popular? Then shit on it!

by Anonymousreply 17January 1, 2025 4:38 AM

As I get older, I too am getting sick of the constant advertising everywhere to get me to buy things. It’s unrelenting.

My New Years Resolution is to stop buying shit

by Anonymousreply 18January 1, 2025 4:39 AM

I resolve to spend more money on man whores.

by Anonymousreply 19January 1, 2025 4:42 AM

Old men aren’t in the demographic most businesses try to get to buy stuff.

They know you’re an old curmudgeon who will keep wearing that ripped sweater until you die.

The businesses all made their money of you when you were younger and thought you were pretty enough so bought tons to junk thinking it would make you pretty.

Now you’re alone…and still ugly.

The magic of capitalism

Will we?

by Anonymousreply 21January 1, 2025 4:56 AM

Bravo r20. The Eldergays are still waiting for that Camel billboard to come back.

by Anonymousreply 22January 1, 2025 4:57 AM

Were the fireworks good? I missed it.

I lived in Shanghai for 4 years and can quite honestly say that you’re totally full of shit. 0/10 for trolling.

by Anonymousreply 24January 1, 2025 5:28 AM

It's the last time I'm watching it. CNN was horrible, who was that chick they had singing at the end? All the hand holding and kissing acting like all is well, I'm simply too old to pretend that the world isn't on fire and 2025 is the start of 4 years of misery.

by Anonymousreply 25January 1, 2025 5:36 AM

R3 My hope is the new generation sees through the lies but it's not looking good. As long as people have their phone screens glued to their face and TikTok to scroll, the world can burn.

by Anonymousreply 26January 1, 2025 5:38 AM

I watched some fireworks around the world this afternoon (day time in the USA) and Dubai had an impressive display. Australia did well, they feel rather removed from the rest of the world and people there tend to love to travel.

by Anonymousreply 27January 1, 2025 6:05 AM

Amen.

by Anonymousreply 28January 1, 2025 6:07 AM

This thread is like watching an All in the Family rerun from 50 years ago. Do the younglings think it's a new thing to rant about capitalism?

by Anonymousreply 29January 1, 2025 6:10 AM

Yes, r29 and in a few years they'll all "discover" Ram Das and Buddhism!

Yawn.

by Anonymousreply 30January 1, 2025 7:21 AM

“What a glorious garden of wonders the lights of Broadway would be to anyone who was lucky enough to be unable to read.” -

G.K. Chesterton in Times Square, 1922

by Anonymousreply 31January 1, 2025 7:38 AM

Welcome to Earth! Will that be cash or charge?

by Anonymousreply 32January 1, 2025 8:15 AM

One couldn't do any better than Times Square to see the essence of America. Capitalism! Drama! Music! Chain restaurants! Aggressive cartoon characters! "Good Morning, America"!

by Anonymousreply 33January 1, 2025 12:09 PM

[quote]I lived in Shanghai for 4 years and can quite honestly say that you’re totally full of shit. 0/10 for trolling.

Shanghai has changed since you lived there from 1956-1960.

by Anonymousreply 34January 1, 2025 12:28 PM

Nothing like ringing in the new year from the gulag.

by Anonymousreply 35January 1, 2025 12:34 PM

I’ve lived in NYC for 20 years and can’t imagine this crumbling sewer could be anywhere near the greatest city

by Anonymousreply 36January 1, 2025 1:40 PM

We're tired of shopping.

We want to go to one central government site to get our uniforms.

Fuck capitalism.

R37, I kind of like that outfit

by Anonymousreply 38January 1, 2025 2:12 PM

R37, the best fashions actual come from socialist countries—France, Italy, for example

by Anonymousreply 39January 1, 2025 2:13 PM

American culture is just buy buy buy buy buy buy buy

by Anonymousreply 40January 1, 2025 2:20 PM

R37, having one outfit would make our lives so much easier, actually.

by Anonymousreply 41January 1, 2025 2:21 PM

I fear a world run by Shen Yun.

Team China here

I watch tv once a year - to watch the ball drop on New Year's eve. Catching a few minutes of those simpering phonies chases me off for another year. What hellscape of flop sweat.

by Anonymousreply 44January 1, 2025 3:15 PM

[quote]You seem to be stuck in the 1970’s

So is the OP.

by Anonymousreply 45January 1, 2025 6:10 PM

I watch tv once a year

Good god, another fucking lie, it's shameful but people don't care anymore, they just fucking lie like r42, a cunt supreme.

by Anonymousreply 46January 1, 2025 6:18 PM

OP, Do you have a Che Guevara t-shirt? Did you get it on Amazon?

by Anonymousreply 47January 1, 2025 6:28 PM

[Quote] OP, Do you have a Che Guevara t-shirt? Did you get it on Amazon?

Yes, our oligarchy allowed me to get one
