25 Years ago this evening, Barbra welcomed Y2K with her 'Timeless' concert

Barbra Streisand kicked off the 21st Century with her 'Timeless' Concert in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Hotel. The concert was 'leaked to the press' nearly a year prior on January 5, 1999. She was paid the most money than any other performer had ever been paid for a live performance - $10,000,000 according to sources at the hotel. The concert was confirmed by her manager in late April, 1999. Tickets went on sale May 2, 1999 : the cheapest tickets went for $500 while the most expensive were $2500. The arena sat 13,000 and the concert sold out within hours. A second show was added for New Year's night at the end of November, and this sold out within hours, too. There were plans that John Travolta would be joining her on stage for a few duets, but the plans fell through.

This was Streisand's second time doing a New Year's Eve Concert - the first time was 1993/94 when she gave her first live public concert in decades at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. She toured with the concert in Australia in March, and then in NYC and LA in September - all which sold out.

[quote] Barbra Streisand kicked off the 21st Century

She didn’t.

[quote] The 21st century is the current century in the Anno Domini or Common Era, in accordance with the Gregorian calendar. It began on 1 January 2001 and will end on 31 December 2100.

I prefer to think she ushered in the 21st century in her underground mall.

That was an amazing concert! She was still in great voice and hit the high notes — especially on Somehwere. D5s galore!

Technically it was 2001 but as far as most people are concerned the 21st Century started in 2000.

Most people do not concern me, R4.

Act like a man!

The worst thing about phones is how they've destroyed concerts, raves, and the like. Audiences are so lame and unengaged now. Artists should really force that yonder bag thing with venues.

r5 that should be the motto of eldergays. Shut off from the world in their hovels.

I enjoyed this CD, but loved the 1994 concert better. That's the live CD I play all the time - the ones from 2000, 2006, 2012 and 2019 pale in comparison (as do the DVDs).
