Morning Workout Motivation

Does anyone have any recommendations to help me get motivated to workout in the mornings?

I'm the queen of procrastination. I wake up and tell myself I'll work out at Noon. At Noon, I say I'll work out after work. After work, I say I'll work out tomorrow morning, ad nauseum. I love my after work walks but it's dark now at 4:30 and my preference has always been to go out about that time. I can't seem to talk myself into walking earlier in the day or doing any other workout for that matter.

Get a gym subscription and never go like most people, but tell yourself you did, and lie to everyone else.

What's a "workout," for you, Cosmo?

Why not just go out for a walk every morning? Start with 5 minutes. Every week, add 5 more minutes until you've reached your target.

Forget the gym. You'll never go.

Thanks, r2.

I am 70 and walk 4-5 miles 5 times a week.

Don't think about it, just let it become a habit.

One saying I heard is:

You can skip exercise one day.

You can skip exercise two days (in a row).

But don't skip exercise three days in a row.

Get an online personal trainer. I work out at 5:30am 3x a week because I know I won't do it when I get home - I will be too tired.

Having someone you're accountable to helps - I'm also losing money if I don't do the workout. He will call and call and call.

Same here, Cosmo.

Here's what I have to tell my lazy self in the morning. "I can at least stretch for 5 minutes".

If I over-promise to myself "I'll get up and work-out for 1/2 hour or more" then I feel overwhelmed, turned-off and my perfected avoidance thinking kicks in.

But if I under-promise and then do it, pretty soon I keep going and I get in at least 1/2 hour of dedicated movement and meditation.

Damn exercise. Mostly because it works. I actually do feel more mental and physical well-being when I put the time and effort in.

Stick with your evening walk then. Get yourself a headlamp and a reflective vest. Walk on well-lit streets, with sidewalks if possible, or see if you can walk the track at the local high school.

Chemistry. I buy expensive pre-workout powder and mix it in a juice drink at 615am. To swallow that is to commit; the train has left the station. I wash face, brush teeth and quick-shower (it’s crazy but I shower twice, before to invigorate and not stink, and after to freshen up and not stink), get into the workout gear, and I’m in the car at 630. Workout is 650 to 730. Home 745 for shower and breakfast.

Other ways to help commit: Setting up the workout clothes/bag the night before.

The pre-workout supplement gives me a caffeine like lift for the next couple hours, but with no jitters. It’s worth the price because of the motivational function it serves from the moment I swig it down.
