With carriers adding hand luggage fees, the difference between no-frills and full-service airlines is becoming impossible to distinguish
Legacy airlines are now coming for your carry-on bag

Will it be cheaper to send your luggage ahead by DHL?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | December 28, 2024 3:52 PM |
Ouiser, you know I love you more than my luggage.
Your emotional baggage is becoming less expensive than traveling with my luggage.

OP--it's a paywalled article. Tell us who is "coming for our carry-ons" since we can't read it ourselves.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 28, 2024 4:44 PM |
Where will they go after reaching the bottom? Flying sounds like a damned nightmare. Why can't airlines get their shit together?

Deregulation, r4
by Anonymous | reply 5 | December 28, 2024 7:06 PM |
I didn't think of that R4.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | December 28, 2024 7:10 PM |
I don't mind. Its the way the world is working these days. Too many people bring too much crap on. And take forever loading them, hogging up space to make everyone else take forever loading their bags in rows away from their seats. Women are the worst offenders.
If you can't afford a $30 bag then you should really evaluate flying.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 28, 2024 8:04 PM |
I honestly loathe the cheap mutherfuckers who try to jam their too-big-for-the-overhead-compartment.
Bitch, if you can afford to fly, you can most certainly afford 50 bucks for a checked bag.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 28, 2024 10:36 PM |
I would rather they exchange fees. (I don't mind waiting for -- and paying for -- my checked bag. I always check my rollaboard.) Make checked bags free and charge people to bring their rollaboards on the plane. They slow down the boarding process and make everything less pleasant.

The enshittification of everything, late capitalism's form of entropy for the masses
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 28, 2024 11:38 PM |
I don’t mind it in theory. Last flight I was on they took a few coats out of the overhead to make room for carry ons and told people they had to hold their coats. On a seven or eight hour flight. I didn’t see if they eventually made room for the coats elsewhere, but they didn’t make any promises to the passenger who got their coats thrown at them.

^Are you a nervous flyer? She sounds like a nervous flyer.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | December 29, 2024 12:03 AM |
I’ve never heard of Legacy Airlines.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | December 29, 2024 12:07 AM |
R3, airlines are starting to charge for carry on luggage
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 29, 2024 12:12 AM |
R14: You're an idiot. It's obvious that's the point of the article. It's paywalled, so we don't know which Airlines to which they are referring.

I'm affluent I NEVER fly in economy. I always fly business class.

The point of the article is that it’s eventually coming to all airlines
by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 29, 2024 1:23 AM |
I've always thought the airlines should charge fro carry on bags and the fee should be much higher than the fee for checked luggage. This would encourage people to check the massive items they attemp to shove into the overhead bins (items that clearly should have been checked but the passenger is trying to avoid the fee).
The large bags shoved into the overhead bins seem to be a huge safety issue. If a plane encounters turbulence or other problems, the massive trunks showed overhead easily can become loose and injured passengers.

I like your idea, R9!
Works for me.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | December 29, 2024 2:16 AM |
I wouldn't care so much if they just priced it with one cost for full baggage, paying flight attendants and pilots well, and seat selection. Make it more expensive on the short flights.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 29, 2024 3:17 AM |
Pro tip: volunteer to have your larger carry on checked in when they ask (and they always do). It's free.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | December 29, 2024 3:37 AM |
I always check a bag to avoid the jockeying for overhead space. I love to smugly waltz onto the plane with nothing but a book in my hand.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | December 29, 2024 4:01 AM |
R1 Right. 😆 I love you. This is why I don’t do low rent airlines. You get what you pay for.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | December 29, 2024 4:10 AM |
I wish they'd just weigh us and our baggage at checking, adjust our ticket price based on our over/under and away we go
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 29, 2024 4:19 AM |
I have a vague memory that in the first few months after 9/11 it seemed that the boarding process became fairly quick and efficient. I remember that it was because most people were checking their bags instead of carrying them on. Does that seem to be a correct memory? Did the airlines limit carry-ons in those first few months, requiring everyone to check their bags and only allowing personal items such as purses, backpacks, briefcases, etc?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 29, 2024 4:35 AM |
R24 Fuck you.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 29, 2024 4:48 AM |
I agree with the person who suggested they exchange the fees. At any rate, I am not perturbed about this because as said in posts above people try too bring too much on board and it slows the boarding process.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 29, 2024 4:49 PM |
It's like the airlines want to create a more contentious environment instead of fixing it.
Bring on la revolution.

I have yet to be on a flight that was actually delayed because people took too much time bringing things on board.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | December 29, 2024 10:00 PM |
Yes, people carry on bags but I’ve never seen it delay a flight. Everyone gets on. The bags get stowed, Flights leaves on time.
This is much ado about nothing.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | December 29, 2024 10:37 PM |
I recall a time when you could check bags for free. It wasn’t that long ago.
Now, airlines see it as a cash cow
