I once read that Warren Buffett only pays the head of his entire personal security 70-80k a year. I don’t think these rich guys treat their security all that great. There was some academic interviewed on The Majority Report who attended a conference in Silicon Valley about futurism and societal collapse. All the VCs and rich guys were only interested in discussing how to enslave security to protect them from peasant revolts without having to pay them or shelter them well. They came up with bomb collars.

Musk, like Trump, is someone who navigates through life by intimidation. In reality they are both very likely terrified little men. Terrified that one day people will see what sad creatures they are behind the scenes when they're not in control. They operate on the belief that everyone who has any involvement with them is scared of them. Trump has the power of the Presidency to back him up, but even that has its limits with some people. Musk only has his money and the power to fire people who work for him to back him up, or remove their little blue checkmarks. His perceived power is on much shakier ground and I live in hope (and expectation) that he and RFK, Jr., and the various nitwits they'll bring on board in the Trump administration, will be the first to fall. They will hopefully be the first dominoes to tip in the long line, bringing down higher and higher players until the last tile (Trump) falls.
I have a lot of hope that this incoming Trump administration will be the thing that finally gets democrats and many voters who've fallen for republican lies for decades to wake up. If things work out well the next 4 years (or however long it takes) will be the final nail in the GOP's coffin. The political system in America has needed massive changes for a very long time. Hopefully the next few years will be what causes it. I'm old, so I just hope I'll be around to see it if it happens.

Musk assumes he can acquire the support of the MAGAs simply by acquiring their leader, but Trump’s popularity is not transferable and Musk is a particularly unpleasant, thin-skinned and socially inept guy. For a while, the fact that he was supporting Trump was enough to buy him some popularity beyond his own geeky fanboys but I don’t think it will last. Wait until he tries to slash the social safety net.
The fact that 50% of Teslas are made in China and Musk is looking to expand his operations there is anathema to MAGA. An illegal immigrant beholden to the CCP is ultimately untenable to MAGA. Trump has put himself in a bind by giving Musk so much power. 🍿🍿

The elephant in the room is that @elonmusk, who is not MAGA and never has been, is a total fucking drag on the Trump transition. @realDonaldTrump
He’s a stage 5 clinger who over stayed his welcome at Mar a Lago in an effort to become Trump’s side piece and be the point man for all of his accomplices in big Tech to slither in to Mar a Lago.
He told Bob Iger at @Disney to “go fuck himself” over Ad money, but he won’t tell Xi JinPing and Li Qiang to go fuck themselves and he’s perfectly happy to take their money to fund his Shanghai Giga Factory.
Elon cock blocks the nominee meetings and tries to undermine anyone and everyone who doesn’t do his bidding. It’s wildly inappropriate how a guy with no experience in politics who has been a Democrat his entire life is now staffing the Trump admin.
He’s completely compromised by the CCP and he has unfettered access to President Trump.
This is fucked up and we need to stop it NOW!
It’s the biggest elephant in the room and everyone is too scared to talk about it.
Why is Jared Birchall, @elonmusk’s money manager who is also CEO of @neuralink, ELON’S company that wants to put chips in everyone’s brains, at Mar a Lago interveiewing candidates to work at the state department? What the fuck are Jared’s qualifications aside from the fact that everyone who works for @elonmusk is a full time Xi JinPing dick sucker? How is he qualified to choose candidates to work in the State Department… you know the same @StateDept that’s supposed to handle CHINA?
Hellllooooooooo @marcorubio what the hell are we doing here?
Is this MAGA?
This is not “attention seeking” @elonmusk.
It’s called accountability. You want to be so rich that you can bully everyone into not holding you accountable so you can pursue your own conflicts, which are EXTENSIVE.
I’m happy to list all of them.
I’ll need a larger character limit on X though to do that.

Trump turns on everyone, he has Elon's money, he will dispose of him eventually. Trump has no inhibitions about changing his story, he could say all elephants should be shot and the next day say he never said that or that someone else said it. A normal person would lose face over embracing Musk one day and publicly rejecting him the next but Trump won't. Trump enjoys risk, he has to feel untouchable after being re-elected, he will gleefully tell Musk to fuck off eventually. Trump shits on everyone.

And along the way stating clearly that for them it has never been about any bullshit like restricting immigration to raise wages for the native populace. It's always been about everybody, immigrant and native born, being content with corporate serfdom.
I really hope we don't hear a lot of Democrats asking everybody to simmer down and work with Silicon Valley on this whole H-1B thing, to find an "acceptable" solution. Nah, go for the class warfare on this one.

This Vivek tweet has the ultra-online wing of MAGA up in arms.
An excerpt—
Our American culture has venerated mediocrity over excellence for way too long (at least since the 90s and likely longer). That doesn’t start in college, it starts YOUNG.
A culture that celebrates the prom queen over the math olympiad champ, or the jock over the valedictorian, will not produce the best engineers. A culture that venerates Cory from “Boy Meets World,” or Zach & Slater over Screech in “Saved by the Bell,” or ‘Stefan’ over Steve Urkel in “Family Matters,” will not produce the best engineers.
(Fact: I know *multiple* sets of immigrant parents in the 90s who actively limited how much their kids could watch those TV shows precisely because they promoted mediocrity…and their kids went on to become wildly successful STEM graduates).
More movies like Whiplash, fewer reruns of “Friends.” More math tutoring, fewer sleepovers. More weekend science competitions, fewer Saturday morning cartoons. More books, less TV. More creating, less “chillin.” More extracurriculars, less “hanging out at the mall.”
Most normal American parents look skeptically at “those kinds of parents.” More normal American kids view such “those kinds of kids” with scorn. If you grow up aspiring to normalcy, normalcy is what you will achieve. Now close your eyes & visualize which families you knew in the 90s (or even now) who raise their kids according to one model versus the other. Be brutally honest.
The MAGA civil war has begun!

To prove he is r ight and Trump is shit, Elon will turn on Trump, because Elon knows if he doesn't Trump will turn on him... Trump is going to do something insulting to Elon. This is easy to predict because Elon is thin skinned and Trump insult people as easily as he breathes. OK. So Trump says or does something Elon gets personally insulted by, and to show Donnie who is in charge, Elon flexes his muscles, and helps the Democrats. It could happen. To the issue of the ultra-rich and their security…
(1) I don’t think there is any level of security that guarantees someone will be free from harm. You can eliminate much risk; you cannot eliminate all risk.
Look at what happened to Trump at his Butler PA rally. Given both Trump’s resources plus his status as a former president, he’s got more security than most anyone anywhere.
(2) Even setting aside how effective high-level security can be, who wants to live like that? I’m one of the poors; I’d love to have endless fuck-you money. But at what cost? You can be filthy rich but you have zero spontaneity or true freedom in your life. Just to get a Big Mac you need a security detail? Who wants to live like that? No, thanks.
Look at what happened to Trump at his Butler PA rally.
You mean the razor-blade-to-the-earlobe trick that Shitler pulled to make Americans think he was shot at?
I'll cut to the chase: we turned heaven and earth over to find Luigi, flay him open for the world to see what happens to an assassin, and are moving through the slow torture and grind of our "system" of justice. Compare and contrast that with Tom Crooks, of whom we know next to nothing (and bear in mind that someone at that rally was killed). I could go on for thousands of words, but the point is that these two events are in no way similar, whether we're discussing motivation or outcomes.
Using the so-called assassination attempt in PA as an example of security (or security failure) is a non-sequitur. IOW, it's not a failure if the intention was to elevate the target as a matter of public perception.
but why HASN’T the Democratic Party been running on this issue
Have you been in a coma for the past 2.5 years?
Facts don't matter. Truth is no longer true. Despite running the economy to it's best state in decades as exemplified by the lowest sustained unemployment period in history, literally leading the world out of the pandemic abyss, it did nothing to help the Democrat win. Biden brought manufacturing jobs back — jobs that explicitly did not require a college degree yet paid college-degree wages — and it did not even merit a blip on the campaign trail. No one paid attention to reality; it was much better for the Republicans when we thought immigrants were eating cats and dogs, murdering innocent young women, and terrorizing communities than to point out the fact that Americans are fully employed with rising wages.
When historians study the collapse of the USA to Russia and China, they'll look at this election that should have been a blowout for Democrats and wonder why the American people fell for the lies, half-truths and outright fabrications about our system. Then this argument will give them an inkling: the American people are stupid, lazy and ignorant, and they love it. Thinking is hard. Much better to listen to a snake oil salesman and throw away your, your children's and your grandchildren's future... to own the libs.

I begrudgingly voted for Harris even though I knew she was going to lose and she's a corporate bot, BUT---the bullshit above is why the Dems have lost the working class vote. The economy is NOT in its "best state" for most Americans. Inequality is higher than ever, and that unemployment rate you're crowing about includes jobs that don't count as such---no or limited benefits, no or limited labor protections. The American worker feels more expendable and exploited than ever and if you look at those two issues together, they are.

The issue won't go away until corporate money is forced out of politics, but that won't happen without a real mass movement in the streets.

Anybody hoping for Americans taking to the streets anytime soon is setting themself up for major disappointment.
NFL playoffs start in a couple of weeks. Then the Superbowl. By that time, it will be time for NBA All Star Weekend, followed closely by NCAA College hoops tournaments. Then the NBA/NHL playoffs begin, which last till the middle of June.
Unless you can magically pry Americans away from their TV sets, don't bet on them takin' it to the streets any time soon.

All of Cait's Republican "pals" probably talk shit about her behind her back. But, a part of me would love it if Cait and Nancy Mace got into a spat.

"Are you suggesting the economy under Trump was BETTER for "the working class", [R202]??
Nice try."
Nice try, you dishonest moron. I said I voted for Harris specifically because with all other things equal, a Republican economic platform will always be worse for the working class. That *doesn't* mean that the economy now is better than it ever has been for workers.

Who would out-histrionic who in this scenario?
And how does Caitlin finagle an invitation to Mar a Lago? I can see Trump asking who let her in.

I love how the most famous transgender woman in the world has publicly endorsed Elon Musk for saying that Americans are too retarded for tech and need to be replaced with more intelligent Indian immigrants. Keep twisting the knife into MAGA, y’all!

I have no doubt there's some disordered individual out there who is contemplating it as I type this post. But he's probably better protected than Trump with former Mossad types guarding him. He's probably surrounded by a human shield as he moves from an armored vehicle into whichever place he's going and his schedule is unannounced. Probably the only way to get him is using a shoulder fired rocket launcher if his private plane is on a flight tracker. Of course, he's thought of this. He suspended a Twitter user who tracked his and other famous people's private jets.

So Trump has disavowed the “nightmarish invasion by foreigners” issue that was the cornerstone of his political career. He’s not even in back in office and he’s betrayed everyone who voted for him. I guess that’s what having experience does, he can wreck everything in a much more efficient way.
by Anonymous | reply 220 | December 29, 2024 12:38 AM |
Trump is siding with Musk and against MAGA. In a couple weeks, all of the MAGAts will be singing the praises of Elon and denying that they ever opposed H-1B.

Trump would have said ANYTHING to get elected. Everyone knew that, including all the MAGA nuts. Not one of them believed him mentally well or competent. Remember that.

One MAGA at my workplace said he wasn't worried that Trump would cause a nuclear war because if he did anything too crazy,, the "deep state" would kill him. Which is insane, since only the president can start nuclear wars and he can do it easily within a few minutes.

The democrats aren't getting into this fray because they're smart enough to sit back and watch them eat each other alive & tear the republican party apart. Like I've said before, Trump, Elon, Vivek, and the rest of the MAGAT crowd will do more to help the democrats retake power in Congress in 2 years than anything the democrats can do themselves.

Just stop there. " Democrats" and "smart" should never be used in the same sentence unless it's " Democrats are not smart." 2024 is a perfect example of how "smart" Democratic politicians are.

I was talking to a Republican friend of mine this weekend who loathes Trump. He is looking forward to the midterms where he thinks that people will be so sick of Trump's chaos that the Democrats will see huge wins. He is already looking into which races need $.
I admit I admire his attitude; I am still wiped out with nothing to give my party. I also appreciate his assumption that we will have elections in two years.

by Anonymous | reply 247 | December 29, 2024 4:41 PM |
Very interesting, r246.
Elon Musk’s former pal, philosopher Sam Harris, claimed the billionaire is in the throes of social media addiction, “snorting ketamine and tweeting at all hours of the day and night,” he added in the Friday episode of his The Bulwark podcast. Harris called Musk’s X behavior “palpably, visibly deranged”
I'm sure Musk thinks he's indestructible, but have he or those around him (his boards of directors, security, the household staff) developed contingencies should he OD? Would they call 911 and the authorities like everyone else or would they try to go about covering up his death and causes? I very much doubt he'd wind up on a county coroner's slab like Matthew Perry.
That *doesn't* mean that the economy now is better than it ever has been for workers
Way to move the goal posts, R213. The economy is in better shape than it's been [italic]in decades,[/italic] but certainly not [italic]ever.[/italic] I agree, there are issues that are worse now than ever; income inequality is at a zenith, the value of money has been eroded with inflation, and we are faced with an uncertain future as the nature of work, both manual and intellectual, is undergoing radical change. In terms we can understand and have a long-standing basis on which to compare, however, the US economy is performing like at no other time.
And all of that is about to change.
MAGAts voted away the stability that Biden brought. One of the advantages of his age (since all we've discussed are the disadvantages) is that he understood the fundamentals of the economy, how it works, and how you invigorate it without spiking it. Trump will spike the economy with some budgetary tricks (for instance, I expect he'll start issuing stimulus checks when his numbers go south, and as we saw during the election, there is a constituency that thinks this is "free money"), but if he actually follows through with either the mass deportations [italic]or[/italic] tariffs, it will crash the economy; if he does both, we're looking at a depression that will make the Great Depression look like a walk in the park.
The goal of the oligarchs is not to make average American lives better. It is to make themselves richer, and the way they do that is by concentrating wealth at the top and keep everyone else fighting over the scraps. It's why Elmo said that there was going to be some pain in the coming months. The easiest way to understand what he wants to do is to look at Russia's economy, where oligarchs reign supreme and common citizens get nothing.
