I think they have been together for 30 years. Name is Claudio I think. It was posted on Tony's husbands social media. First time I have seen him acknowledge being gay.
Beautiful couple.

He’s been talking about it for a while now.
There’s an oral history of All In The Family called Those Were The Days that came out a few years ago, and Tony is quoted about the episode he was in, where he played MIke’s friend who Archie thought was gay. He talked about what it was like to do it as a gay man. I think that may have been the first time that he spoke about it publicly.
Plus, I think it’s basically an open secret that he and Ron Glass were a couple once upon a time.

Oh, yes. He was on General Hospital.
[quote]If you’re a longtime General Hospital fan, you likely remember one of the most-watched weddings in soap opera history. 30 million viewers tuned in to see Luke and Laura wed on November 16 and 17, 1981. After three years, Lucas Lorenzo Spencer (Anthony Geary) and Laura Webber Baldwin (Genie Francis) got married in a two-part episode on the ABC soap opera. The episode drew in lots of viewers in part because of Elizabeth Taylor, a self-proclaimed GH fan, played a guest role as a woman named Helena Cassadine, who cursed the newlyweds because she blamed Luke for the death of her husband.

I never understood Tony Geary's appeal. I remember back during the "Luke and Laura" era and all the women swooning over that balding queen. I didn't get it.
I also remember him doing a cabaret show at the height of his fame, which was a total flop and more embarrassing than anything Countess Luann has ever done.

People forget that long, curly hair was popular at that time, for women AND men (e.g., Peter Frampton).

Here he is in 1971 probably taped in late 1970 as Roger on a very early episode of All In The Family. I much prefer his straight ( ha ha) hair- much more attractive than his FRIZZY PERM of ten years later. I does not look like him at all. He was only 23 year old. He looks more like 33 year old in this episode.

I like some of the fashions of 1971. The girl in the middle is especially pretty and I particularly like her dress- God, I am so gay.

David Soul appeared in an episode of All In The Family around the same time but his case was the opposite. He had straight hair on Starsky and Hutch a few years later but on his 1971 appearance on All In The Family as Szabo Daborda he had a frizzy perm which was very unusual for 1971. This was a funny episode by the way.

To the poster at r17: I didn't mean to impugn his reputation, and I never watched the soaps and couldn't care less about Mr. Anthony "Tony" Geary, but I did hear this tidbit about being nude on set as backed up by this discussion board from 15 years ago. He apparently had said as much in a TV interview in 1982, which is where I probably heard it as a 16 year old boy, and it's stuck in my mind. At the time it was probably considered "method" and semi-OK. Now it could be considered harassment by a male actor with a higher status over a female actor with lower status (I have no idea who his co-star "Emma" was but everyone knew "Luke and Laura" at that time).
by Anonymous | reply 55 | December 27, 2024 9:47 PM |

How many times Tony play either a rapist, mentally ill mute or killer before he got GH? I remember him as George, the rapist on Y&R. He was creepy, needy and threatening. On Bright Promise, I think he was mute. So he broke a bit out of type as Luke, and how people got the chemistry thing with Laura was weird. Laura had cute Scotty at home, and his dull law books. But then, vampire Barnabas Collins became a fan sensation on Dark Shadows, and he was in his 40's and hardly conventionally handsome.

by Anonymous | reply 61 | December 29, 2024 12:42 AM |
r57 Luke and Laura is before my time, but last year I watched a youtube channel that had clips of their entire love story. I now understand it. Even though Luke is ugly he does have chemistry with Laura-- or at least the writing was so good and taboo (he raped her) that it worked. I wish daytime soaps were so well written. I actually was at the edge of my seat. LOL. Also everything about the late 70 is just so gritty even when unintentional that it just worked.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | December 29, 2024 12:52 AM |
I've known Geary was gay for years. Not exactly a secret.
There was an essay in an academic book about soaps where the writer went to a few days of filming on the GH set somewhere in the early 00s I think, at a time where both Tony and Genie were still on GH (and before Genie's lengthy hiatus from the show).
The essay said that Genie was in charge of when and how to kiss Tony, and the reason was that Tony is gay and HIV positive, and Genie made her control of physical contact a part of her contract.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | December 29, 2024 12:58 AM |
That's exactly right R62. He did have chemistry with her and we all thought he was unconventional in his looks. He had something that we all liked. The storyline was kind of dirty and sexy, too. It really grabbed me and my friends.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | December 29, 2024 3:24 AM |
I was a young teen aged girl at the time of the whole “Campus Disco” era. They did a long slow burn with Luke and sister “Barbara Jean.” There was that whole Frank Smith and the Mob and the mob daughter he was supposed to marry. The whole story took a long time and as I recall he did the whole falling in love with Laura was full of adult yearning and hints of sex that had this 13 year old racing home from school and grabbing a tub of Friendly's Ice Cream. The whole world of GH was exciting then - the Floating Rib, Heather Steven Lars and the LSD, Tracy Q & Mitch. pre internet at 13, 14 life was Gopher on The Love Boat, Eight is Enough, Happy Days. All of the tv guys were clean cut and preppy. There was something about Tony Geary telling Laura that he was in love with her and couldn’t sleep and couldn’t eat and would be dead by the next day - with Rise in the background. it was sort of thrilling. And stupid me - I didn’t know that he taped her. They cut to a commercial - it was a Friday afternoon. I remember my little friend Beverly called at the commercial and we both said WHAT JUST HAPPENED? It was very exciting back then.

Thanks for the pic R80. I'm mesmerized by the junk of the shelving behind them. Is that a small nativity scene on the bottom shelf - a man standing with a staff and some lambs or something. So Mormon Tony, well he's from Coalsville Utah, had a nativity scene on display. Weird.

r65, right on! I got hooked a couple of years before, during the David Hamilton storyline and then things really heated up when Scotty dumped Bobbie Spencer for Laura, who was 16 years old. Scotty was in law school so was at least 21 or 22. I was 11 years old, and it didn't faze me that they had her character in sexual relationships with much older (David, Luke) men. Just about my entire sixth grade class watched the show.
I remember the rape scene and honestly didn't realize it was rape until I watched it as an adult. I thought Laura kept saying no because she wanted to but didn't want to cheat on Scotty. Then when the police found her in the park crying and asked if she'd been raped she went with that as an excuse.

I never watched the soap, but I remember being a senior in high school and all the girls were talking about 'the wedding' episode (they all stayed home that day to watch it). A few days later, they brought in all the magazines with photos of 'Luke and Laura' on their wedding day, and I found nothing attractive about him.
Then I remember reading that he was joining 'Dynasty' as Blake's nephew (Ben's son) in January, 1987 to help boost ratings for the season, but then they changed the character to Blake's niece (Ben's daughter). I always wondered why they did that. Terri Garber was dull as 'Leslie'.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | December 31, 2024 12:40 AM |
R88 that would have been hilarious. I think Tony is OLDER than Chris Cazenove who played Ben. And yes, Terri Garber so good in North and South, was a big dud on Dynasty. They gave her a stupid haircut and no sl,
by Anonymous | reply 89 | December 31, 2024 2:22 AM |
I suspect the heartbreak he endured with Elizabeht Taylor (who wound up marrying a Tony Geary lookalike in Larry Fortensky) might have caused him to turn to men.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | December 31, 2024 2:56 AM |
Between his heart breaking romances with Liz Taylor and director Marlena Laird, Tony found comfort in men.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | December 31, 2024 9:54 AM |
R89 Actually, Cazenove was 4 years older than his proposed son. Don't forget, Joan Collins was less than 12 years older to her 'son' Gordon Thomson (and complained about his being cast as her son!) but no one cared. I think the producers just wanted a cast of good looking people - age be damned ! I don't think ages were a major concern on that series.

Taking roles playing a rapist was maybe a good “cover” for Geary in those days. Late actor Peter Coffield did that, too, back in the 70s, playing a rapist in “Cry Rape.” Coffield also played Nancy’s ex-boyfriend on an episode of “Family” wherein he got rapey with her while hopped up on amphetamines.
