Darlene Love performs Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) at 83 on Fallon

This brought a tear to my eye for two reasons: 1) She started doing this tradition yearly on Letterman 30 years ago and I’m glad she’s still given the opportunity. 2) She is 83 and still crushing it!

I thought she did this every year but on The View, not Fallon. (Maybe she’s always done both?) I think The View is having Jordan Sparks for their Christmas show tomorrow.

Here's an edit of different versions of "Christmas" from Letterman's IG page. I cry when I hear it, too, OP. The Phil Spector album was released for Christmas 1964, and by the time it, and the song, became familiar, it was a big song for people who had people in Vietnam.

I had an across the street neighbor who died there, and there was a girl who lived down the street whose sister had a boyfriend in Vietnam. My family and hers used to celebrate one night during each December, and I was always asked to either play or bring that record, and it was so sad one year. I don't know if he ever came back.

The Phil Spector Christmas album was released the morning of 11/22/63.

Thank you, r4, I had read that they canceled that release because of other events that happened that day. In any case, I got it for Christmas, 1964.

Was that Lupone?

Cher sang backup on the 1963 version. She and Darlene re recorded it as a duet in 2023.

I attended Darlene’s Christmas concerts in NYC the last two years. She was incredible. This year’s one was canceled though and they didn’t say why.

I thought she died a few years ago.

Was it Tuesday night's show ... when was this aired, OP? We may be able to watch it On Demand on big screen.

This bitch luvs the religious right.

Of course she'd end up with a glowing DL thread in '24.

by Anonymousreply 13December 31, 2024 2:09 AM

r13 do you know where you are? The religious right is hated here, for obvious reasons.

by Anonymousreply 14December 31, 2024 10:31 AM

Yes R14 but Darlene Love has been a supporter of them for years & this thread is in big denial of that.

Vanity, John Schneider, Joan Rivers, etc. have all been given fawning threads on here at one time or another.
