I would love to see either Daniel Craig or Timmy win the Best Actor Oscar in 2025.
I think that Timmy is peaking at just the right time, and he knows how to work the media.
Daniel Craig needs to step up his campaign, if he wants to compete for the award.
He needs to go full "Jamie Lee Curtis" on Timmy.

I think Adrien is the favorite. But I wouldn’t pass Timothy wining for one reason. The Oscars know they are losing cultural currency. Less viewers each year, every years, movie theaters dying, so many award shows etc. a Timothy win would shake things up and appeal to popular tastes. However many of the members will likely not think of it like that. And we all know the Oscars are ageist when it comes to men.

R17: Because he's unlikable and he can't act.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 6, 2025 9:50 PM |
The Golden Globes usually play contrarian to the Oscars unless the performance is just universally praised which usually happens with one of the 4 acting awards each year. When I say universally praised, obviously they all are but there is usually one which is just heightened above the rest like Jamie Foxx in Ray or Casey Affleck- Manchester by the Sea. Then also because the categories are split into genres that throws another wrench in the game.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 6, 2025 9:58 PM |
R17, First of all, his movie and he were in the wrong GG categories.
Secondly, who cares what you don't understand?
R15, Exactly how would a Chalamet win "appeal to popular tastes" when his movie's setting is a very specific moment in time, place, and music, none of which is remembered or popular today?
But even if they were all still cared about, one cannot judge Adrien Brody's lead performance without seeing it, which I am 100% certain is true of r17.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 6, 2025 9:59 PM |

It seems likely he'll get a nomination but a win is very unlikely. He's too young and the movie isn't popular enough or beloved or have a huge critical appeal. It's not his time.
It'll probably be:
Adrian Brody
Ralph Fiennes
Colman Domingo
TimTim
And, either Daniel Craig or Sebastian Stan for the 5th spot.

R21, You wouldn't know it judging by his current major awards status.

Enty is reporting that TImTim's team is already hard at work trying to take down front runner Adrian Brody by trying to rehash old shit about Brody being banned from SNL and his shocking molestation of Halle Berry at the Oscars.
Timmy really wants that Oscar.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | January 7, 2025 10:50 AM |
Alas, r32, the movies of all your listed actors seem not to be "popular....or beloved...."
"The Conclave" for damn sure isn't bringing in youthful audiences. I doubt "Queer" or "The Brutalist" are, if they ever even seep into the public consciousness.
"A Different Man" isn't even out until the 21st, GG winner Stan or not. As with the RL subject, more people are apt to choose "The Apprentice," his film about Trump.
"Sing Sing"? Not ANOTHER "good man incarcerated" story?! BT, DT. "Queer"? GMAB! Audiences in significant numbers are not likely to embrace a gay "James Bond," as it were.
IOW, while the acting might be impressive, I don't think the Box Office numbers will be.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 7, 2025 10:54 AM |
R34, As if anyone cares about SNL's ancient history.
As for Adrien's smooch of Halle: Yes, it was uncalled-for. But it seemed more akin to that iconic "V-E Day" kiss than to a "molestation."

by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 7, 2025 2:30 PM |
Brody is a lock to win but I think now Colman Domingo is in second place. He got the loudest applause when the nominees for best actor in a drama were read and he seems to very well-liked in the industry.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | January 7, 2025 10:09 PM |
R39, Domingo is VERY social. He attends every party and industry function. He's made a lot of friends, which turns into votes.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 7, 2025 10:38 PM |
And, Domingo is VERY likeable and down to earth. He's one of those journeyman actors who "made it" and Hollywood loves that shit. Especially the actors. "If he can do it, I CAN DO IT, TOO!!!"
Frankly, TimTam is about 4th on the list. Adrian has momentum for a strong performance in a hip, arty movie. Ralph is "due" and in an old fashioned, well constructed classic kind of Hollywood film; Domingo is popular and in a "feel good" kind of movie. TimTamCham is in a musical biopic and H'wood awards voters love that, but as already said, he's young and being a bit obvious about his campaign. Which can sometimes work but can sometimes backfire. And, is he actually well liked? Dating a Kardashian really doesn't help him.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 7, 2025 10:48 PM |
If the claims about Chalamet sabotaging Brody's campaign are true, Brody should absolutely bring up the Daily Mail hit piece alleging diva and toxic workplace allegations on the set of A Complete Unknown. Even Magnold was accused of physical assault in that piece. The news broke during the summer and his PR basically buried it. The Daily Mail or the accusers should've come forward in the fall during the ACU press tour.

Timmy is the ONLY A-list actor of his age group.
He has project, after project, after project lined up, which is something other actors his age don't have.
They all have to audition for roles. Timmy gets roles made for him.
People are practically begging him to work for them.
Other actors his age have to audition and beg for roles.
The Timmy haters are so sad because none of their bile (lots of it probably coming from Austin Butthead himself) spewed all over this thread will never change the fact that Timmy is a bona-fide A-LIST STAR.
He's invited to all the awards shows, talk shows (all over the world), and photo shoots.
No one in his age group even comes close. They can't touch him.
And the cherry on top is that he'll probably be nominated for an Academy Award this year.
He has already won. Sorry, haters!

Who are these big names supposedly begging to work with Timothee? Chris Nolan just cast a big film and Timothee was not included. I haven’t heard other directors begging to work with him. Because Timothee is frail, quirky and offbeat, he’s going to be stuck playing these oddball character parts.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | January 8, 2025 4:22 AM |
R50, You are certifiable. If you really want to continue this "vs Austin Butler" (notice your puerile "naming"), you have already lost. TIMOTHÉE HAS WON NO MAJOR AWARDS, so it is stupid and silly to assert he is "the ONLY A-list actor of his age group," while Butler HAS so won, and is also an Oscar nominee, which status you seem to hold in high regard.

by Anonymous | reply 61 | January 10, 2025 3:18 PM |
Timmy Stan, you know right that the movie cost $60-70 million to make, not including the massive advertising buy? It needs to make around $150M to start to be be profitable so it's not exactly a box office success. It's even doubtful that it will gross $70 million, so it's a giant financial loss for Searchlight. So much spending in hopes of getting Oscar nominations, but it still has a small audience of Boomers and older folks.

[quote] As of early January 2025, "A Complete Unknown" has grossed over $40 million domestically, making it the highest-grossing film for its distributor, Searchlight Pictures, surpassing previous titles like "The Menu" and "Poor Things"; this figure is considered a profitable run for the movie, although it hasn't reached the same box office heights as other recent Timothée Chalamet films like "Dune: Part Two" or "Wonka."

Chalamet confused the film crew with his behavior
Chalamet, who thanks to his interviews and appearances on television earned a reputation as a "sweet and down-to-earth guy", was a completely different person on the set. **"He was a real paranoid. We were forbidden to look him in the eye and even introduce ourselves before starting work, " says one of the crew members.
Conflicts with colleagues and film crew
Insiders also claim that Chalamet made scenes with other employees. Once, when the producer's assistant accidentally caught him on camera, the actor started cursing and demanding to delete all the pictures. As a result, the entire film crew received e-mails prohibiting the use of phones near the star.
"He is angry at everyone but himself, " said one of the insiders.
Toxic atmosphere on the set
Chalamet was not the only one who caused displeasure with his actions. Director James Mangold was also accused of mistreating subordinates. According to employees, Mangold even used physical force on assistants. However, the main star of the film, Timothy, remained his favorite, as his participation ensured the financing of the project.

He lost himself in the worst of Hollywood. The Kartrashians certainly didn't help but I don't think they're responsible for his personality change. People said he was an asshole on the set of Wonka, which was long before he signed the contract with the Kartrashians. Fame and money is like a potent drug to people in their twenties. He was more fun as an indie darling and now that soft, sensitive intellectual artist image is out the window.

He has had a lot of success, but he's only so-so as an actor. He must also feel the financial burden of trying to carry "A Complete Unknown" to success (which cost well over $70 million, but has only grossed $50 million and will soon be on streaming to try and make some extra cash).
And not to be mean, but he's not exactly growing into his looks. He has a kind of rat-like demeanor, which is only punctuated by the barely can grow moustache.

While this milestone is significant, A Complete Unknown still has yet to break even in theaters. The movie's budget is reportedly somewhere between $50 and $70 million, which likely places its break-even point somewhere around $125 million or more, a milestone that its current $70 million projections won’t reach.

Throw in a lot of expensive marketing, too.
A Complete Unknown isn't going to be a huge cash cow.
Sort of dumb of them to think that a biopic on Dylan could be a blockbuster...yeah, he was a seminal figure but let's be real...a big chunk of Dylan fans are either dead or long past the "hey, let's go to the cinema!" stage of life.
It's like Streisand thinking her book would sell millions of copies. She waited too long and many of her most diehard fans have....died.

R15, "A Complete Unknown" is a highly enjoyable film, and I, THE Austin Butler fan-troll, think Timothée was great as Dylan.
But upon sober reflection, I think the movie is a light-weight, offering zero insight into either the source of "Bob Dylan" from "Bobby Zimmerman" or the resulting influence on music and society.
That is, it relies on what the AUDIENCE now knows, on OUR hindsight from having "been there."
And unfortunately for the film, we KNOW the socially-aware Folk Movement is no longer viable, that it ultimately led nowhere, NOT EVEN WITH BOB DYLAN.
So younger audiences have no context and we Boomers have only nostalgia, but the star Chalamet belongs to the former while we Boomers still have the living Dylan.
Thus, the Box Office numbers will reflect just how many times his fans want to see Timothée on the silver screen in this role, and just how often Geezers want to re-live that brief moment of 60 years ago.
IOW, I don't think this movie will reap the financial benefits of repeat viewers. Add that to the superficial treatment of the subject and the milieu (was Vietnam even mentioned once?), and I don't see any major awards in its future.

It’s not AI-corrected. His voice was blended with that of a native speaker. That’s it. Not much different than being dubbed. It’s maybe four lines in a voice over that’s onscreen for less than two minutes in a three and a half hour movie.
None of that takes away from Brody’s performance. I suggest you just see it for yourself.

In light of the Karla Gascon drama, I think what we need right now is a Timothee Chalamet Best Actor Oscar.
Adrien Brody is too controversial, with him forcibly kissing Halle Berry, as well as his A.I. dubbing (cheating) in "The Brutalist."

[quote] ‘A Complete Unknown’ and Timothée Chalamet’s Late Oscars Surge Could Result in a Best Picture Spoiler
The Oscar race is jam-packed with social media controversies, unexpected nominees and an awards-filled weekend colliding with the Super Bowl. As Critics Choice, DGA and PGA get set to weigh in, a late-breaking contender has shaken up the conversation: James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown.”
Initially eyed for a 2025 release, the Searchlight Pictures drama instead debuted in December. Now it’s making a bid for Oscar gold, and it could be the year’s ultimate spoiler — particularly since awards season darling “Emilia Pérez” has been engulfed in controversy over offensive tweets by its star Karla Sofía Gascón.
History suggests an upset is possible. Take the 2005 Academy Awards: Martin Scorsese’s Howard Hughes biopic “The Aviator” went in with 11 nominations, and the night looked to be a coronation. But Warner Bros. threw a curveball.
After a private screening in the fall, the studio fast-tracked Clint Eastwood’s boxing drama “Million Dollar Baby,” originally slated for the following year. The move paid off. Despite “The Aviator” winning five Oscars, “Million Dollar Baby” claimed best picture and three other statuettes.
Turning a late-season release into an Oscar juggernaut is no small feat, especially without a major film festival debut. The last December release to win best picture was “The Shape of Water” (2017), but it had premiered at Telluride.
Does “A Complete Unknown” have a real shot?
One Oscar voter tells Variety, “There’s not a single movie this year I’ve loved more. It was like being at a Bob Dylan concert — and I’ve been to Dylan concerts. You just take it all in.”
In addition, amid political turmoil and just weeks after the devastating L.A. wildfires, voters may be drawn to the movie that uplifts them the most. Though many may feel that to be Universal Pictures’ blockbuster musical “Wicked,” equally compelling is Mangold’s vibrant and poetic look at one of the most consequential figures in rock history.
While “A Complete Unknown” has eight nominations, its Oscar fortunes may turn on whether this year’s race follows the trend of a picture/director split, where the top two prizes go to different films.
Brady Corbet is the presumed frontrunner for his historical epic “The Brutalist,” but his relative lack of industry recognition could be a hurdle.
Mangold, by contrast, is a Hollywood veteran. He directed the best picture-nominated “Ford v Ferrari” (2019) and made history when “Logan” (2017) became the first superhero film nominated for a major Oscar prize for adapted screenplay. That industry respect could work in his favor.
The film also plays as a quintessential boomer movie, resonating deeply with older Academy voters who see it as a throwback to classic Hollywood craftsmanship. And then there’s its star power: Timothée Chalamet, who portrays Dylan, recently hosted “Saturday Night Live” — a moment that added to the film’s visibility.
Ultimately, timing is everything. With PGA voting closed and DGA ballots due Friday, “A Complete Unknown” is gaining steam at the perfect moment. Could it crash the party in the final hours and take the night’s biggest prize? Don’t count out Mr. Tambourine Man.

by Anonymous | reply 321 | February 11, 2025 3:08 AM |
R317, You have a point, but not one that many will agree with. Fiction is not automatically superior to fact. Imaginary is not ipso facto superior to reality.
It is why impressive portrayals of consequential humans such as Lincoln, Churchill, Robert Oppenheimer, Elizabeth II, Ray Charles, Jake LaMotta, Stephen Hawking, and yes, Freddie Mercury won Academy Awards.
One might argue that the actor depicting a real person has it "easier" in that it's an "imitation" of available materials, letters, photos, videos, what have you; whereas the actor and director must be more "creative" with a fictional character (though presumably even the fictional one has a "voice" and a description).
But that argument can be flipped around. An actor of an imagined character has more leeway and thus doesn't have as much risk of viewer disapproval. "Fact-checks" can't get in the actor's way. There are rarely complaining (or praising) fans (Agatha Christie readers being quite the exception).
So to be specific to this year: Is Timothée Chalamet a credible Bob Dylan, real person? IMO, yes. But have the director and screen-writer provided enough of a framework for him to become Oscar-worthy? IMO, no.

Agreed. Having loved ACU, I watched Scorsese's brilliant documentary 'No Direction Home.' All the fascinating archive footage of Dylan accorded with TC's portrayal, nothing in his acting jarred. (Norton's Pete Seeger also hit the bull-eye wonderfully well.)
I suppose the anguish and arc of Brody's story-line in 'The Brutalist', and his obviously impressive performance, is likely to compel more voters. As against that, there's the rise of an American genius who stamped himself unforgettably upon a time of unprecedented social change. My valueless non-vote is for TC in ACU.

Here's the real comparison to 2023:
Austin Butler won #5, GG.
Brendan Fraser won #4, CC.
Austin Butler, #3, BAFTA.
Brendan Fraser, #2, SAG.
Brendan Fraser, #1, AA.
THIS year the "countdown" has been:
Adrien Brody, #5, GG.
Adrien Brody, #4, CC.
No alternating or sharing. Adrien all the way.
Next up: BAFTAs.

Brody won the Oscar at 29 for his work in The Pianist. Chalamet is 29 and nominated for A Complete Unknown. Does anyone think Timothee at 29 is capable of delivering the level of performance that Brody gave at that same age? I like Chalamet but he just isn’t that kind of talent.

R368: 35% told PostTrak they went to see A Complete Unknown for Chalamet, while 20% came for the cast, while 51% bought tickets because it was a Bob Dylan biopic. [quote] the odds for lead actor actually favor Timothée Chalamet for playing Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. The musical biopic is also contending for ensemble, supporting actor (Edward Norton), and supporting actress (Monica Barbaro); Brody, however, is the sole SAG nominee for The Brutalist, suggesting a lack of support overall for the film.
by Anonymous | reply 431 | February 21, 2025 2:16 AM |
"His acting was not like an impression, but he embodied this very complicated, real life person, which I think is a challenge. I think some others in the category, it was almost an imitation." Who could be these others the voter is referring to? LMAO!
by Anonymous | reply 432 | February 21, 2025 9:04 PM |
R432, Neither the quote-without-context-and-r# nor your "LMAO!" makes any sense.
Either name the actors, or don't.
But just in case and FYI, Sebastian Stan's Trump was in no way a simple "impersonation" (not going to reiterate an earlier post of mine). We learn clearly who formed his character and in what ways. We see vividly who Donald Trump was before he was Trump, how he personally went to his father's tenements to collect rent, e.g.
And if the praised actor is Chalamet: "embodied" Dylan is a bit of an exaggeration, as the movie's Dylan, while showing his independent loner streak, fails to show us why Dylan was moved to write songs of social change. He is shown walking out on media-connected Limousine Liberals; shown being a bit of a hound dog; shown visiting Woody Guthrie (why so important to Dylan, when he slags off Pete Seeger?); and whoa, Nellie! "going electric"! Maybe I've forgotten them, but I don't recall scenes of Dylan's opining on politics.
Ultimately, "ACU" is incomplete. The movie's actual success is not in the acting or the writing; it is in the minds of the audience. The AUDIENCE fills in the blanks---before, during, and after---and it is WHAT WE KNOW that infuses meaning to "A Complete Unknown." Were this movie a work of fiction, with the blanks perforce unfilled, I wonder what the reception would be.

by Anonymous | reply 441 | February 24, 2025 3:11 AM |
Timothee's speech at SAG was so cringeworthy. At least everyone knows now that he thinks really highly of himself and wants to be known as one of the greats. He could have just said "thank you," but he had to ruin it by his delusions of greatness.

by Anonymous | reply 446 | February 24, 2025 3:36 AM |
Agree with others here - although Timaaaay gets a boost from this award, ACU didn't take the overall ensemble trophy at the SAGs (Conclave did), which doesn't help it. I still believe that Brody is the front runner if by a hair.
Anora won big at the DGAs and PGAs. That bodes well for it at the Oscars. Those voters will likely split up the voting among the major frontrunner films: Brutalist (actor, director); Anora or Conclave (Picture); Emilia Perez (BS Actress); The Substance (Actress). Sean Baker could sneak in for Best Director and Conclave or The Brutalist for BP, but I think this is what we'll see.
The strong noms for ACU (Actor, BP, both BSAs, Director, Costume, Adapted Screenplay) will be its reward.
by Anonymous | reply 447 | February 24, 2025 3:29 PM |
To add to my post above ^^, Mikey Madison could still sneak in at Actress if Anora wins Best Picture. She is the central actor in that film and voters may want to recognize that.
by Anonymous | reply 448 | February 24, 2025 4:17 PM |
If the Oscar voting closed before SAG, this has no impact. SAG often goes for the popular choice only to see that person lose at the Oscars. And Timmy has been nominated only twice for an Oscar, but we are supposed to think that he is great? I can't stand him and his me generation foolishness.
