American Dataloungers

Where in the US do you live and do you like it? Pros and cons in regards to the city or state you live in?

by Anonymousreply 59December 20, 2024 2:50 AM

I live in Rockford, IL and I hate it. I moved here to be closer to my sister and regret it.

by Anonymousreply 1December 16, 2024 1:36 AM

I live in Houston. At least, it's not Beaumont.

by Anonymousreply 2December 16, 2024 1:37 AM

We live in Berkeley, CA. LOVE IT!

by Anonymousreply 3December 16, 2024 1:38 AM

Manhattan. I hate it. But I love it.

by Anonymousreply 4December 16, 2024 1:39 AM

Portland Oregon. The homeless/mental illness/drug crises these past 6 years have really dented my affection for this town (where I was born back in '69, though I've left and returned several times). Things have started getting better from the nadir. Also, honestly, since you're asking in late fall almost winter, the grey, overcast, damp and rainy weather from October through March really wears on the soul. Anyway, Portland in the late 80s through early 2000s was great, I wonder what the future holds. I don't feel dedicated to Portland as I was was, or particularly proud of the city, but I'm uncertain as to where I'd go instead.

by Anonymousreply 5December 16, 2024 1:46 AM

*once was

by Anonymousreply 6December 16, 2024 1:46 AM

Chicago. Edgewater. A short walk to Andersonville. Wine stores, coffee shops, tea bars, a paper shop owned by a gay couple. A short drive or train trip to Lakeview. It's wonderful.

Do join us R1.

DC. I've lived here for 12 years, and loved it. But, I am moving in February, only because I can't be in this city under the incoming administration (again). I feel it be so much worse this time around.

I am moving to Santa Fe, NM for a year. We'll see how that goes. I wanted to go somewhere very different.

by Anonymousreply 8December 16, 2024 1:50 AM

I live in Hell.

No. Really.

Philly and yes. I do like it

by Anonymousreply 10December 16, 2024 2:17 AM

I live in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Love the city, HATE the state government!

by Anonymousreply 11December 16, 2024 2:20 AM

San Diego, California -It's a great place to live. Fantastic weather and lots to do (theatre, restaurants, clubs, tourist destinations, etc.). Lots of military men on the beaches from local Navy and Marine Corps bases.

There governor ain't bad, either.

by Anonymousreply 12December 16, 2024 2:21 AM

I've lived in NYC, CHI, DC, LA, SF, SD and Laguna Beach. Back in Virginia now and love it. Enjoyed all of the places I lived. DC probably the least.

by Anonymousreply 13December 16, 2024 2:25 AM

I hope I hear good things about New Orleans. I plan to move there to write the next great American novel before I go off permanently to England.

by Anonymousreply 14December 16, 2024 2:36 AM

r14 As long as you stay in Kenner or Metairie and keep the visits to the actual city of NOLA to a minimum you'll be fine.

by Anonymousreply 15December 16, 2024 2:41 AM

As of last week, I now live in Sun City, Arizona. I thought I would be bothered by all the old drivers driving really slow, but they actually barely slow down at stop signs! So far I like it a lot.

by Anonymousreply 16December 16, 2024 2:42 AM

You writing a book, OP?

Your awkward syntax always gives you away, comrade.

Stop being so gullible, DL.

by Anonymousreply 17December 16, 2024 2:53 AM

r16, I'll see you shortly when i travel out to visit an elderly aunt for the holidays

by Anonymousreply 18December 16, 2024 3:00 AM

r17 This is why we make up our answers in posts like this, silly

by Anonymousreply 19December 16, 2024 3:01 AM

R17 Umm I’m not the OP

by Anonymousreply 20December 16, 2024 3:06 AM

Palm Springs, CA. I like the slow pace. I miss things like rain...

by Anonymousreply 21December 16, 2024 3:16 AM

I prefer to live in fancy hotels. Generally I leave town when I've burned through all the men who will have sex with me.

by Anonymousreply 22December 16, 2024 4:05 AM

Brooklyn, NY

CON: It’s loud, littered, overcrowded, noisy, expensive/almost unaffordable, and often vulgar. On a bad day it’s like an open-air insane asylum.

PRO: It’s lively, electric, artistic, diverse, beautiful, pedestrian-friendly, and very very queer. Surprisingly peaceful. Usually. Great food, drink, shopping, art, live music, multiple independent bookstores all in walking distance. Amazingly, my part of Brooklyn has almost no chain stores. I love the architecture and the neighborhood parks. Kind, interesting neighbors on my block.

by Anonymousreply 23December 16, 2024 6:19 AM

A Philly inner-ring suburb, Delco. I like it; it is walkable and safe. It is close to the cultural activities of Philly.

by Anonymousreply 24December 16, 2024 6:33 AM

Are you serious, R9? You're just a few miles from my sister.

by Anonymousreply 25December 16, 2024 7:43 AM

[quote]I hope I hear good things about New Orleans.

I lived there in the '90s and it's falling apart. If your novel is about carjacking and outrageous insurance rates, you'll be fine.

by Anonymousreply 26December 16, 2024 7:45 AM

I live in southwest Minnesota in a town called Walnut Grove. It’s small, but has its very own mercantile. If I want some gay action on the down low, I sneak into Sleepy Eye or Mankato.

by Anonymousreply 27December 16, 2024 7:53 AM

Flyoverstan City, Flyoverstan. In the center of the country, this charming locale features a small culturally neutral metro surrounded by corn. Dating prospects are great if you’re on drugs. Higher end shopping is best done at home. Rent is so reasonable you can afford to visit warmer locales when it turns to Canada in the winter.

by Anonymousreply 28December 16, 2024 10:33 AM

Fabulous Hartford CT. It sometimes surprises me.

by Anonymousreply 29December 16, 2024 11:38 AM

Dallas

by Anonymousreply 30December 16, 2024 12:12 PM

R23, you could be describing a lot of philadelphia

by Anonymousreply 31December 16, 2024 12:39 PM

There is no place like New York City. I have a love hate relationship with it but it’s truly a unicorn of metropolis.

by Anonymousreply 32December 16, 2024 8:17 PM

I moved away from Seattle. Huge mistake.

by Anonymousreply 33December 16, 2024 8:24 PM

I moved away from Seattle. Best thing I ever did for myself.

by Anonymousreply 34December 16, 2024 8:26 PM

I'm a king in Queens. I'd live somewhere else so long as I didn't have to drive.

by Anonymousreply 35December 16, 2024 9:32 PM

I live an hour North of SF. It's okay, but it's fucking expensive as hell and at $69,300 per annum, and am considered to be living at the poverty line.

However, I can't think of any other place that I would go that would be 1) cheaper and 2) interesting to live. I have lived in New York (not the city), Southern CA (LA and SD), SF (city) and was born in Hawaii (I'd never want to live on an island).

Oh, I'm about to turn 56 too with no retirement.

Living the dream.

by Anonymousreply 36December 16, 2024 9:40 PM

Richmond Virginia . I like it but it’s lately gotten inundated with five over ones like everywhere else. My neighborhood is beautiful of course, a DLer would never live in a dump. I can walk to mass and the bar and to Mother’s.

by Anonymousreply 38December 18, 2024 1:08 AM

What's a "five over one"?

by Anonymousreply 39December 18, 2024 1:11 AM

Houston.

Pros: lots to do. Great museums, symphony, opera, ballet, great medical facilities. Fantastic dining scene.

Cons: summers, traffic and you have to have a car. It's not a walkable city as it's sprawling.

by Anonymousreply 40December 18, 2024 1:18 AM

R36, what's so interesting about living 1 hour north of San Francisco? If you're 56 with no retirement, IMO, you've got to make a move to somewhere with a lower cost of living.

by Anonymousreply 41December 18, 2024 1:21 AM

[QUOTE] I like it but it’s lately gotten inundated with five over ones like everywhere else.

Again, but this time explain what you mean in English.

by Anonymousreply 42December 18, 2024 1:22 AM

r41 And where, at my age, do you suggest I pick up and move to?

I have a very stable job here, and at my age, I'd be worried about finding another job at all (ageism is alive and well). I will also likely be receiving an increase in the very near future (I already received 3 raises in my first years and a half of the job, so that's not too shabby). I'm being promoted as well, and this organization is on the verge of some significant expansion (we're a very niche nonprofit Land Trust, and we do work that 99% of the land trusts in CA can't and don't know how to do).

At my age, I'd be nuts to try to start all over somewhere else and trust that I have any job longevity. The best I could hope for is to move somewhere cheaper within the state...and CA isn't exactly a cheap place to live. The places that *are* cheap are in the middle of nowhere or shitholes.

So there it is.

by Anonymousreply 43December 18, 2024 1:29 AM

Flawduh no pros.

[QUOTE] Flawduh no pros.

Another gibberish post? F&F'd.

by Anonymousreply 45December 18, 2024 1:34 AM

R45 is a retard.

by Anonymousreply 46December 18, 2024 3:50 AM

R45. It's called satire. Please FF me.

by Anonymousreply 47December 18, 2024 4:30 AM

Southern WV. I like it here it's beautiful and much cheaper to live than Chicago which is where I'm from. I do miss Chicago very much though. The bad about living here is there are no good restaurants and about the only places to shop are Walmart and the Dollar stores. There's really not many museums or even movie theaters here. But, I do like the people here and I probably wouldn't move again, but still I think of Chicago as home.

by Anonymousreply 48December 18, 2024 4:34 AM

Dallas, it’s easy to live in, not very expensive, plenty to do, friendly people, direct flights all over the world.. Cons, it’s hot in the summer, not walkable, shallow people, unattractive, treeless, flat landscape, in a red state.

I live in SF (in "The City"). I've been here most of my adult life. It has deteriorated over the decades which has really escalated from the time of COVID. No way I would recommend anyone moving here now. It's way too expensive for what you get and I'm not just talking about properties.

by Anonymousreply 51December 18, 2024 6:20 AM

[QUOTE] [R45] is a retard.

And you're a filthy, stinking aborted baby that was tossed in a bin.

by Anonymousreply 52December 18, 2024 11:50 AM

Go kill yourself R47. Your satire isn't funny and no one will miss you once you're gone.

by Anonymousreply 53December 18, 2024 11:53 AM

Someone is really cranky this morning.

by Anonymousreply 54December 18, 2024 2:11 PM

In a van! Down by the river!

by Anonymousreply 55December 18, 2024 2:32 PM

I’m in upper manhattan - Hamilton Heights. Pros - “cheap” rent for manhattan, lots of really beautiful 100+ y. o. buildings - both brownstones & 6 story apartment buildings. Still a very mom & pop store type neighborhood overall - so it feel more like old school NYC, almost anything you buy is 30% cheaper than midtown, lots of families with young kids , close to the river / park, doesn’t feel any more dangerous than Chelsea did back in the 80s.

Cons - It’s primarily a residential neighborhood - so there’s not much to do up here; and not an affluent one - so there aren’t a lot of offbeat shops to poke around in on a Saturday - although there are a fair amount of gentrified bars & restaurants. It’s simply not Hells Kitchen or the Upper West Side and the subway down to midtown / the Village can take awhile, especially at night.

by Anonymousreply 56December 19, 2024 12:48 AM

I live in Phoenix. The high today was 81°. Yes, it sucks during the summer but the winters are glorious! A few days ago it was 63° and I was chilled to the bone.

I love the mountains and desert landscape and seeing coyotes, roadrunners, and once in a while, the desert fox.

by Anonymousreply 58December 19, 2024 2:39 AM

I’m freezing on the East coast. Arizona sounds wonderful this time of year.
