Why are there so many Dexters?

I just watched the premiere of Dexter: Original Sin, and it was pretty good.

It was good seeing Patrick Dempsey, Christian Slater, and Sarah Michelle Gellar all in one cast.

The guy who plays young Dexter (Patrick Gibson) is pretty cute too.

Be prepared for lots of early 90s music and references.

They're trying desperately to redeem themselves after the terrible, terrible finale.

Paramount is milking Showtime’s IP. Dexter was at least big in reruns on Netflix. The same cannot be said of two planned Billions spin-offs.

The problem with the show is that we already know Dexter’s backstory which was covered extensively in the original series. So the prequel has no purpose.

I'm loving Original Sin. It feels as exciting to watch as when Dexter first premiered. I'm enjoying being back in that whole universe. I had very low expectations, but have to admit they've nailed it. With the exception of Harry, all of the younger character iterations are spot on. I like Christian Slater, but I don't know why they couldn't just use James Remar again with a Vaseline lens.

Surprisingly, I never watched the original Dexter, so I have no point of reference for "Harry."

As far as I'm concerned, Christian Slater is Dexter's father.

I subscribe to Max, so I'll eventually get around to watching the original Dexter and Dexter: New Blood.

But for now, I want to watch the entire first season of Dexter: Original Sin.

Episodes 2 and 3 are both out now.

It's weird that the opening credits they released a few months ago aren't the same as what appears before the actual show now. Most of it is just a slightly different order of scenes, but originally Dexter ended by putting on a graduation cap and gown before walking and with Harry and Deb and Sarah Michelle Gellar's "special guest star" credit was included as part of the opening instead of after.

Dexter was a good show, I watched everything twice

Episode 2 felt a bit like filler, but Episode 3 was really great.

I'm starting to love this show.

My favorite are the shirtless scenes of Dexter in bed. Yum.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is great. Why isn't she listed as a main cast member? She only gets "special guest star" billing, but her acting is as good (if not better) than the main cast members.

Christian Slater. Oh, boy. I really like him, but the plastic surgery he got on his face is so distracting. You can tell he has had work done on his face, but his eyes are the most obvious part. He looks like a New York socialite woman.

And when did Patrick Dempsey become a Latino? He looks like a hot Cuban daddy.

Patrick Gibson has nailed Michael C. Hall, down to his mannerisms and timbre of his voice.

The young Deb was a good casting choice too.

Plus I'd watch anything with Christian Slater in it.

I believe the same writers as the original are involved.

I'm also enjoying this series. I have fond memories of the original as it was so unusual and have to admit I get a pang of excitement at the opening credits. The casting director deserves a bonus. I had to double check the actor playing young Angel wasn't actually him.

This Deb is like a standard hot sassy teenage girl.

I just started watching Original Sin. It's surprisingly good - much better than I expected it to be. And certainly better than the sequel from a couple of years ago.

I also have to say: I never found Christian Slater attractive but he's aged well. He's quite DILFy now.

Very impressed with episode five.

The writing is fantastic, and the actors are doing a great job.

I loved the ending of the episode.

The only thing that bothers me are Christian Slater's eyes. They are so distracting! He has obviously had plastic surgery, but it looks like they botched it around his eyes.

Actually, episode 5 was the first one I didn’t like. It felt like it dragged more than the others for some reason.

Patrick Gibson and Christian Slater are terrific as father and son.

The actor who plays Young Dexter is a whopping 6 years younger than Hall was at the start of the original Dexter, which was full of flashbacks anyway.

Joan Collins was always credited as "Special Guest Star" on Dynasty.

it's an old trick when you have a big star on a show, but you cannot give them first billing because the show already has its designated stars playing the protagonists billed first.

New Blood was weird. It had one of the best episodes of Dexter ever the second to last one when he and Harrison kill Clancy Brown and Harrison is learning the code and you expect there to be a season 2 where they're father son murderers in LA or something. Followed by the worst episode ever the finale where Harrison shoots his dad with Chekhov's hunting rifle for killing the wrestling coach/town prison guard he met 3 weeks ago in an escape attempt.

R75 - I think they kind of set it up that Dexter would be “Harry” to Harrison and the series would continue that way. They can still do that with Dexter being alive, but they can mirror Original Sin by having the “alive” version of Dexter mentor Harrison.

this show was never good. it was at least fun and camp for a while. after john lithgow it became unwatchably dull. i saw some clips from the newer episodes and the acting was absolutely pathetic.

There really isn’t a hint of originality in this show is there? It’s literally all of the exact same characters and exact same premise as the original show. And it’s even telling a backstory we already know all the details of. I kind of wish they’d focused the prequel on Dexter’s biological brother and what happened to him between being separated from Dexter as a kid and turning into the Ice Truck Killer in season one of the original.

I thought he drowned in a pool accident?

The kid who drowned was Harry's biological son, Harry Jr. Dexter's biological brother is Brian Moser, the other son of Harry's CI Laura who we saw pulling the tails off of lizards earlier in the season. Harry takes in Dexter after Laura dies, but not Brian. In season one of the original show, the villain turns out to be the adult version of Brian. But what happened to him between Laura's death and showing up in season one of the original is kind of a mystery. Would have made for a much more interesting show imo than this rehash of the original Dexter.

R97, I was predicting that the kidnapper was someone in the police department. At first I thought SMG was going to be the kidnapper. While I wasn’t necessarily expecting Patrick Dempsey to be the kidnapper, I wasn’t exactly surprised either since I figured it was going to be someone from the police department. Its always the person you least suspect, so I was looking for the character you’d least suspect.

Dexter was hinting that he might kill the Chief Spencer character.

I'm guessing he will, because his dialogue for the past couple of episodes has been about his intense hatred for people who kill kids.

The Dexter: OS finale was great.

It tied up the season very nicely (just in case the show doesn't get renewed).

However, it left a couple of things open-ended, to set up a possible second season.

I really hope this show gets renewed. I enjoyed it a lot.

I am rewatching the original Dexter now. The season with John Lithgow is so good!

R122 Dexter season 4 is one of the best seasons of tv I’ve ever seen. It was nearly perfect. Especially John Lithgow.

And the ending, wow!

Good finale. It made me feel bad for Brian- Harry really did fuck him over by taking away his only family and the only person he loved and sending Brian to foster care. Dexter and Brian shouldn’t have been separated. It was so sad when Dexter asked for his mom and Brian said ‘Mom’s busy right now” and they were both feet from her dismembered body. He was a good big brother.

I wonder if there will be a season two.

Most importantly, Patrick Dempsey’s sleazy cop vibe was really doing it for me this episode. The tight jeans, leather jacket, slicked back greying hair, and mustache? Yes, please.

I am enjoying the show. I never found Patrick Dempsey hot until now. him naked under plastic wrap was sizzling!

We already knew Brian’s backstory. I didn’t think going over it again adeed much. Except for Harry’s death, we’re now pretty close to where the original series begins. How is Brian going to lay low long enough to emerge as the Ice Truck Killer in a few years? Why would he give up his Dexter obsession in the interim?
