Trump Wants to Privatize the United States Postal Service and Destroy it

[QUOTE]The USPS is older than the US itself, founded in 1775. It became financially self sustaining in 1970 and is one of the most well liked federal agencies, according to a 2024 Pew Research study.

The man is beneath contempt.

by Anonymousreply 1December 14, 2024 4:01 PM

This was the plan all along. His buffoon lackey Louis DeJoy has been working to dismantle the service from the inside for four years. Now here comes the next phase.

by Anonymousreply 2December 14, 2024 4:07 PM

Where is OP getting that the USPS is self sustaining? The article clearly states that it loses almost $10 billion a year.

by Anonymousreply 3December 14, 2024 4:08 PM

The USPS is too big a competitor for FedEx, UPS and all the rest of them.

by Anonymousreply 4December 14, 2024 4:08 PM

^ I see it in the article now, apologies. But it still doesn’t seem right and the paragraph immediately below seems to contradict it.

by Anonymousreply 5December 14, 2024 4:10 PM

Of course it loses money. It’s a public service. Does the Pentagon make a profit?

by Anonymousreply 6December 14, 2024 4:13 PM

r3, De Joy went on a mad dash to rip out sorters, replace sorters, move distribution centers, re-re-locate distribution centers and run the USPS into the ground, NECESSITATING the privatization of the USPS.

The retirement funding alone is just another post of cash that Republican Capitalists want to get their filthy hands on.

Get rid of DeJoy, change the retirement funding to normal levels, and return the Post Office to its real goals and watch it return to profitability. OVERNIGHT, which is what would happen if it were privatized.

by Anonymousreply 7December 14, 2024 4:13 PM

The USPS was the most efficient business organization in the history of the world. But, billionaires weren't getting any profit it from it, so bye bye.

by Anonymousreply 8December 14, 2024 4:15 PM

It now routinely takes a check two or three weeks to go from coast to coast.

by Anonymousreply 9December 14, 2024 4:15 PM

look to modern day Russia to see what Fuhrer trump has in store for your precious America.

by Anonymousreply 10December 14, 2024 4:15 PM

Bezos makes a huge profit. They do fulfillment on a contract basis for Amazon.

by Anonymousreply 11December 14, 2024 4:15 PM

DeJoy should not have been left in charge. For all we know he interfered with the mail-in vote.

by Anonymousreply 12December 14, 2024 4:16 PM

R9, a birthday card I sent in September from Michigan to California took 15 days to arrive.

by Anonymousreply 13December 14, 2024 4:24 PM

In September, I mailed a birthday card to my sister in L.A. The address is a single family home. The address consists of the house number and the street name. I even had the zip plus 4 code. She's lived there for over 30 years.

The card was returned to me a week later marked "address insufficient."

by Anonymousreply 14December 14, 2024 4:28 PM

R13, the undercutting of the Post Office goes back to Nixon. We are not now living in the golden age of postage service, but I’m sure that undermining it further will help.

by Anonymousreply 15December 14, 2024 4:29 PM

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

by Anonymousreply 16December 14, 2024 4:33 PM

r9, that was a standard 3-day post before Capitalists set their sights on not making the USPS a competitor for USPS, FedEx and the rest.

DeJoy has stocks in ALL of them. The demise of the USPS is to his BENEFIT.

by Anonymousreply 17December 14, 2024 4:46 PM

[QUOTE] DeJoy should not have been left in charge. For all we know he interfered with the mail-in vote.

I refuse to believe that President Biden couldn’t have found some way to remove DeJoy. However ugly and controversial it might have been. Joe just didn’t want to get down and dirty.

by Anonymousreply 18December 14, 2024 4:57 PM

The USPS is a mess and has been for years. You all are just siding with it because you’re contrarian to anything Trump. People don’t send letters anymore and the employees are dumber. The whole service is basically a welfare job for lazy POC who only hire their own.

USPS has seen a 80% DECREASE in volume of mail but ADDED 190,000 employees

Senator Rand Paul “Can you think of a private business where 80% of what they're, you know, doing to make money is going down in volume that would actually increase their employees? You've insourced 190,000 jobs, and it's just sort of inexplicable”

by Anonymousreply 19December 14, 2024 5:16 PM

If it happens, Trump supporters in rural and sparsely populated areas will be hurt the most.

And they'll blame Democrats for it, of course.

by Anonymousreply 20December 14, 2024 5:17 PM

And R20 will be jerking it, thinking about that extra 60 cents they’re paying for a delivery.

How your Trump Derangement Syndrome?

by Anonymousreply 21December 14, 2024 5:19 PM

Unlike you and Trump, R21, I feel sorry for the suckers who've been hoodwinked.

by Anonymousreply 22December 14, 2024 5:22 PM

The government is a shitshow:

USPS has seen a 80% DECREASE in volume of mail but ADDED 190,000 employees

The IRS spent nearly $50B for enforcement which returned $4B in revenue

I hope they clean up the waste

There is a lot of things that could be privatized such as the roads they could do a by the mile basis to use them. The investor class did it with medicine, prisons and utilities without much resistance. The change would be a simple legal arrangement and a billing system. Americans are used to being corralled and billed they are trained to accept it as logical and rational. In fact this is what the majority of voters voted for.

by Anonymousreply 25December 14, 2024 5:39 PM

It was the USPS that proved the existence of Santa Claus.

They've been trying to end the USPS for like 30 years. It ain't happening

by Anonymousreply 27December 14, 2024 8:44 PM

They’ve never been anywhere near this close to doing it, R27.

by Anonymousreply 28December 14, 2024 11:37 PM

Can't get my meds and Social Security check delivered, but these cheap eggs sure is tasty!

by Anonymousreply 29December 14, 2024 11:52 PM

That is the reason for Trump installing DeJoy as postmaster general, to make it less efficient and profitable so they can kill it and privatize it.

by Anonymousreply 30December 14, 2024 11:59 PM

Kill it, privatize it, and make sure every mailed democratic ballot mailed is directed to a shredder.

by Anonymousreply 31September 11, 2025 4:02 PM

He already started by putting Dejoy in as PMG..remember how he destroyed the sorting machines. This will put the icing on the deplorables cake

by Anonymousreply 32September 11, 2025 4:07 PM

Effective statement from 2024 Trump voter: "Please destroy the United States of America as we have known it."

As if it weren't damaged enough already.

by Anonymousreply 33September 11, 2025 5:07 PM

DeJoy's contempt for the agency was/is criminal sabotage. Still, on the utility of a large USPS, it may be one issue where I share some degree of agreement with Trump.

Why is there a federal agency with 600,000 employees so that Data loungers can send birthday cards to their sisters? Why in an age of electronic accounts does anyone need to have Social Security checks delivered by a civil servant in a uniform every month? Why, when it's estimated they two-thirds of the residential mail is unsolicited "junk mail", is it necessary to keep that tradition alive?

Tradition and habit and Norman Rockwell imagery and commemorative stamp collectors aside, what couldn't be handled in other ways or some mix of private and much slimmed down USPS services? Who is left who receives useful, wanted communications or deliveries by way of USPS?

by Anonymousreply 34September 11, 2025 5:24 PM

This is of course the conservative plan. Privatize government services for private companies make profits off of taxpayer money. They’re trying to do it with public school and the VA. They fired tons of civil servants, only to start hiring contractors to do the work. US postal service is next on the list

by Anonymousreply 35September 11, 2025 5:29 PM

Although it's sad to think of the USPS being gone, it's an entity that's gone the way of elevator operators since the advent of technology that replaced the mail. In the last several years, the USPS has been operating at a loss except for one or two quarters. That is your money and my money being spent to sustain an institution that delivers mostly mail junk nowadays.

by Anonymousreply 36September 11, 2025 5:48 PM

Fuck off R34 and R36.

by Anonymousreply 37September 11, 2025 10:48 PM

Stupid Americans are so businessbrained. We worship the very word business. The USPS ought to be a SERVICE, talking about profitability is ridiculous. The entire economy "profits" from fast, cheap, and efficient shipping. We could have developed a high-tech system that reduces road traffic and gives us the fastest and cheapest commerce infrastructure in the world. Oligarchs would benefit tremendously from such a thing, but they hate the idea of something they can't own existing too much.
