We Love You, Nancy, Get Up!

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is in the hospital after sustaining an injury on an overseas trip in Luxembourg.

“While traveling with a bipartisan Congressional delegation in Luxembourg to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi sustained an injury during an official engagement and was admitted to the hospital for evaluation."

Battle of the bulge? And I wasn't invited?

by Anonymousreply 1December 13, 2024 4:34 PM

At 84 it's time for her to abandon her heels.

by Anonymousreply 2December 13, 2024 4:37 PM

The proper form is:
oh Nancy Pelosi we love you get up

Appalling.

🎶 Get up, Stand up. Stand up for your rights! 🎶

by Anonymousreply 4December 13, 2024 4:44 PM

At least she doesn't have to worry about deductibles and denied claims in Luxembourg.

by Anonymousreply 18December 13, 2024 5:51 PM

She allegedly took a fall down a flight of marble steps while at a public event in Luxembourg, with other Congressional delegation members present. Might have fractured her hip.

In the photos at the event she is wearing black STILETTO pumps, more fitting for a 20-something than a frail 84-year-old with balance issues...you go, Nancy, but more appropriate footwear might be a better choice next time.

by Anonymousreply 19December 13, 2024 7:56 PM

She should not be wearing heels at her age, especially having to go up and down stairs. Marble at that. It's horrible that she broke her hip, I'm glad it wasn't worse.

by Anonymousreply 20December 13, 2024 8:15 PM

Tee Hee Hee...

by Anonymousreply 21December 13, 2024 8:20 PM

Ugh. my mom was so sharp and driving and selling real estate well into her 80s. she suddenly started having falls and Yada, Yada, Yada she is 88 dementia and can’t remember how to walk. Poor Nancy is done. Wow - they will need caregivers in the San Francisco house now. Think of how altered her husband must be after the hammer attack……. Years ago I remember the reports of Barbara Walters falling on her face at a big party annnd - we all know how that turned out.

by Anonymousreply 25December 13, 2024 9:04 PM

Great investment opportunities in Luxembourg. She’ll be fine.

by Anonymousreply 26December 13, 2024 9:22 PM

It's been a long time that the word 'hip' was use in conjunction with Nancy Pelosi

Breaking a hip at her age, she should resign now so her House seat can be filled by someone able to vote. The Democrats need every vote they can get.

by Anonymousreply 29December 13, 2024 9:41 PM

She really should have retired by now. Turning 85 in a few months. R29 has an extremely valid point.

by Anonymousreply 30December 13, 2024 9:44 PM

Ridiculous that 84 year olds are in Congress.

by Anonymousreply 31December 13, 2024 9:47 PM

by Anonymousreply 35December 13, 2024 9:57 PM

Nearly 85, fragile, and broke a hip. I hate to say it but the end is near. When octogenarians start breaking hips, the end is usually sooner than later. Ask anyone who works in nursing homes or hospitals.

by Anonymousreply 36December 13, 2024 10:49 PM

I hope she's had her pneumonia shot. If not she'll probably acquire it while in the hospital.

by Anonymousreply 37December 13, 2024 10:52 PM

Hang in there, Nancy! Don't let them force you into resigning.

by Anonymousreply 38December 13, 2024 10:52 PM

It's sneakers or ballet flats from now on Nancy.

by Anonymousreply 39December 13, 2024 10:56 PM

When they break a hip it's usually all downhill.

by Anonymousreply 40December 13, 2024 10:58 PM
It's sneakers or ballet flats from now on Nancy.

It might actually be a wheelchair in her future.

by Anonymousreply 41December 13, 2024 10:59 PM

I think in the next year we’re gonna see a lot of these old politicians kick the bucket. They all should have retired years ago.

I’m hoping after rump’s presidency, we’ll see a renaissance of sorts and with it the ushering in of young engaging democratic politicians

Everything seems old and stale now

by Anonymousreply 42December 13, 2024 11:06 PM

Newish here - what is the "we love you, get up" from?

by Anonymousreply 43December 13, 2024 11:14 PM

by Anonymousreply 44December 13, 2024 11:44 PM

by Anonymousreply 48December 14, 2024 1:19 AM
Jesus Christ. Get out already! These people like Nancy and The Turtle, who are in poor health, have power over the country. TERM LIMITS!!!!!!!

R10 All due respect, but we have term limits for members of Congress. They're called elections. All 435 members of the House are up for election every two years. All 100 Senators, every six. I understand the power of incumbency can be very strong, especially for members like Pelosi who may be 84 but she remains extremely popular with her SF constituents (like me) because of her long record of legislative achievements. But when enough people are seriously ready for new leadership, they will choose it on their primary ballots.

The issue I have with people demanding Congressional term limits is it's rarely thought through and doesn't take into account (for better or worse) how Congress was designed to work from its inception. Both chambers are extremely hierarchical and bestow the best assignments (committee chairs/assignments, ranking members, etc.) on the members with the greatest tenure that each party conference considers their best. Another function of Congressional tenure is it cultivates greater experience in public service/leadership the longer the folks are in their seats. Go enacting a Constitutional Amendment forcing term limits (because that's the legal threshold you're dealing with here), and you're unwittingly cutting off a critical pipeline of future talented, experienced Senate and Presidential candidates, and so forth. Bad news.

Instead of a term limit amendment, I’d propose something more like a productivity requirement in order to be qualified to stand for re-election to Congress. And I don’t mean bills to rename post offices and committee roles to investigate what the meaning of “woman” is. You have to meet a standard, to be defined in the amendment, to be a productive legislator and get a certain number of bipartisan bills on the floor for votes in each session, or you’re basically incompetent and not eligible for re-election. See my thoughts at reply 19 in the linked thread.

Now, where we [italic]absolutely[/italic] need term limits via Constitutional amendment is on all federal judges up to and including SCOTUS justices. My two cents.

by Anonymousreply 54December 14, 2024 5:30 AM

Pity.

by Anonymousreply 55December 14, 2024 5:46 AM

I'm very surprised to learn she was wearing stilettos. I'm only 60 and high heels became a thing of the past in my early 40s. Kitten heels from then on. I've always been a clumsy person. I don't think my balance has deteriorated yet, but I always use hand railings in public places. I just feel more secure that way.

by Anonymousreply 56December 14, 2024 5:48 AM

Well said, R49.

by Anonymousreply 57December 14, 2024 6:07 AM

I admire Pelosi for her effectiveness as Speaker in getting legislation passed, and she has a spot in history as the first female Speaker. However, I think it would have been best if she had retired 2 years ago when her term as Speaker came to an end. She could have gone out on a high note.

by Anonymousreply 58December 14, 2024 8:06 AM

My 83-year-old grandmother broke her hip, acquired pneumonia while in the hospital and died.

by Anonymousreply 59December 14, 2024 8:28 AM

50% of all older people who break a hip at that age die within a year. Not form the break, but from being hospitalized and dying of some related infection, just like what R59 laid out.

by Anonymousreply 60December 14, 2024 9:00 AM

She still has time for some truly inspired stock trades before the end

by Anonymousreply 61December 14, 2024 9:17 AM

Did she push her “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” button?

by Anonymousreply 62December 14, 2024 9:58 AM
50% of all older people who break a hip at that age die within a year.

Up to a third of older adults who break a hip are dead within a year, not half.

My 82-year-old uncle broke his hip five years ago and is fine today. He fell and broke it at 8pm at night, my aunt and cousin dragged him into his bed and gave him a Tylenol, and he slept for nine hours until they called the hospital the next morning. (First, they had to convince him it wasn't just a pulled muscle that would go away in a few days.)

by Anonymousreply 63December 14, 2024 11:43 AM

She was really foolish to be wearing high heels at her age; any fall is potentially catastrophic.

by Anonymousreply 64December 14, 2024 12:10 PM

R43 R52 It's from a poem from 1964 called "Lana Turner Has Collapsed!" by Frank O'Hara

Lana Turner has collapsed!

I was trotting along and suddenly

it started raining and snowing

and you said it was hailing

but hailing hits you on the head

hard so it was really snowing and

raining and I was in such a hurry

to meet you but the traffic

was acting exactly like the sky

and suddenly I see a headline

Lana turner has collapsed!

there is no snow in Hollywood

there is no rain in California

I have been to lots of parties

and acted perfectly disgraceful

but I never actually collapsed

oh Lana Turner we love you get up

by Anonymousreply 65December 14, 2024 12:37 PM

R43, R52 It’s the final line from a poem by Frank O’Hara titled Poem [Lana Turner has collapsed!], the line being “oh Lana Turner we love you get up”

by Anonymousreply 66December 14, 2024 12:38 PM

Has Trump called Nancy yet to offer his good wishes for a speedy recovery?

by Anonymousreply 67December 14, 2024 1:24 PM
I hate to say it but the end is near. When octogenarians start breaking hips, the end is usually sooner than later. Ask anyone who works in nursing homes or hospitals.

She’s a bit more active than the average 84 year old, is a normal weight, and doesn’t have any pre-existing signs of cognitive decline…so she’ll probably recover okay from this.

But yes, this is a sign that it’s time to retire and stop traipsing around the world in heels.

by Anonymousreply 68December 14, 2024 1:47 PM

I’ll bet she’ll be flown to Washington to have surgery for her hip fracture, rather than linger in a socialized medicine country’s hospital.

by Anonymousreply 69December 14, 2024 1:50 PM

R59 I'm sorry to hear that, but that's what I'm talking about (R36). What happened with your grandma is very common - I've seen this a number of times.

the end is near...most elderly folks die after a fall.

check out the stats...they don't last long

by Anonymousreply 75December 14, 2024 5:13 PM

Most elderly people don’t die today after hip fractures, because they’re treated surgically and they’re able to get up and walking shortly after.

Years ago, they were thought too old to undergo surgery, so they’d be left in bed for weeks while the fracture…which inevitably led to death.

That being said, a major fracture and surgery can definitely result in a functional decline compared to how the person was pre-fall.

I've noticed that it's primarily people who could qualify for AARP benefits and senior housing communities that feel some type of way whenever the nursing home that is our government leadership starts getting called out.

by Anonymousreply 84December 14, 2024 7:41 PM

My friend's 95 year old mother fractured her hip last year, had surgery and three months of rehab and is back in assisted living, snapping at the CNAs and demanding as she always does. She's now permanently on a walker, is the main difference. The effect of this type of injury varies from person to person.

by Anonymousreply 85December 14, 2024 7:56 PM

R84, I'm older, and I'm sick and tired of the gerontocracy in Washington. Until recently, one dared not speak of it here, even though it applies to both parties.

I want our elected officials to be young enough that they have to lie in the bed they make. An 80 or 90 year old can fuck everything up and shrug -- "après moi, le deluge" -- secure in the knowledge that they won't live to deal with the mess they leave behind.

Plus, people get set in their ways as they get older. It happens to everyone. The advantage is that it gives the government some stability, but the price is that it also gives it rigidity. The world changes fast, the post-WWII order is gone, and we need to be flexible.

by Anonymousreply 86December 14, 2024 8:52 PM

I'm surprised that Nancy is still trying to block AOC's career. It's clear that AOC has been slowly shifting center-ward, over the past couple of years. I assume that shift will pick up apace, with the current political climate (and when I say "shift centerward", I mean center-left).

AOC is a lot of things, but she is intelligent. Intelligent enough to realize that to have longevity in the House, and have real power there, she has to make compromises and have the appearance of being someone who will compromise. Sticking with the "Squad" isn't going to do that for her or her reputation, hence her distancing there.

I personally believe she wants to be Speaker at some point. I don't think she'll ever be seen as POTUS or cabinet material, she's not meant for the executive branch imo.

by Anonymousreply 87December 14, 2024 9:11 PM

Now that Di Fi is gone, the prize for grotesquerie goes to Chuck "Methuselah" Grassley. Unless Nan comes back using a walker.

by Anonymousreply 88December 14, 2024 9:53 PM

r86 The problem is that we have leaders who still see themselves as they were when they entered into politics. The natural byproduct of this purview is to also see the world as it was when they first entered into politics. And we all suffer for it.

They've mentally "de-aged" themselves and insist on gaslighting the constituents that they are fully capable of doing the job they've been elected to:
