We Love You, Nancy, Get Up!
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is in the hospital after sustaining an injury on an overseas trip in Luxembourg.
“While traveling with a bipartisan Congressional delegation in Luxembourg to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi sustained an injury during an official engagement and was admitted to the hospital for evaluation."

She allegedly took a fall down a flight of marble steps while at a public event in Luxembourg, with other Congressional delegation members present. Might have fractured her hip.
In the photos at the event she is wearing black STILETTO pumps, more fitting for a 20-something than a frail 84-year-old with balance issues...you go, Nancy, but more appropriate footwear might be a better choice next time.
Jesus Christ. Get out already! These people like Nancy and The Turtle, who are in poor health, have power over the country. TERM LIMITS!!!!!!!
R10 All due respect, but we have term limits for members of Congress. They're called elections. All 435 members of the House are up for election every two years. All 100 Senators, every six. I understand the power of incumbency can be very strong, especially for members like Pelosi who may be 84 but she remains extremely popular with her SF constituents (like me) because of her long record of legislative achievements. But when enough people are seriously ready for new leadership, they will choose it on their primary ballots.
The issue I have with people demanding Congressional term limits is it's rarely thought through and doesn't take into account (for better or worse) how Congress was designed to work from its inception. Both chambers are extremely hierarchical and bestow the best assignments (committee chairs/assignments, ranking members, etc.) on the members with the greatest tenure that each party conference considers their best. Another function of Congressional tenure is it cultivates greater experience in public service/leadership the longer the folks are in their seats. Go enacting a Constitutional Amendment forcing term limits (because that's the legal threshold you're dealing with here), and you're unwittingly cutting off a critical pipeline of future talented, experienced Senate and Presidential candidates, and so forth. Bad news.
Instead of a term limit amendment, I’d propose something more like a productivity requirement in order to be qualified to stand for re-election to Congress. And I don’t mean bills to rename post offices and committee roles to investigate what the meaning of “woman” is. You have to meet a standard, to be defined in the amendment, to be a productive legislator and get a certain number of bipartisan bills on the floor for votes in each session, or you’re basically incompetent and not eligible for re-election. See my thoughts at reply 19 in the linked thread.
Now, where we [italic]absolutely[/italic] need term limits via Constitutional amendment is on all federal judges up to and including SCOTUS justices. My two cents.

I admire Pelosi for her effectiveness as Speaker in getting legislation passed, and she has a spot in history as the first female Speaker. However, I think it would have been best if she had retired 2 years ago when her term as Speaker came to an end. She could have gone out on a high note.
50% of all older people who break a hip at that age die within a year.
Up to a third of older adults who break a hip are dead within a year, not half.
My 82-year-old uncle broke his hip five years ago and is fine today. He fell and broke it at 8pm at night, my aunt and cousin dragged him into his bed and gave him a Tylenol, and he slept for nine hours until they called the hospital the next morning. (First, they had to convince him it wasn't just a pulled muscle that would go away in a few days.)

R43 R52 It's from a poem from 1964 called "Lana Turner Has Collapsed!" by Frank O'Hara
Lana Turner has collapsed!
I was trotting along and suddenly
it started raining and snowing
and you said it was hailing
but hailing hits you on the head
hard so it was really snowing and
raining and I was in such a hurry
to meet you but the traffic
was acting exactly like the sky
and suddenly I see a headline
Lana turner has collapsed!
there is no snow in Hollywood
there is no rain in California
I have been to lots of parties
and acted perfectly disgraceful
but I never actually collapsed
oh Lana Turner we love you get up

She’s a bit more active than the average 84 year old, is a normal weight, and doesn’t have any pre-existing signs of cognitive decline…so she’ll probably recover okay from this.

Most elderly people don’t die today after hip fractures, because they’re treated surgically and they’re able to get up and walking shortly after.
Years ago, they were thought too old to undergo surgery, so they’d be left in bed for weeks while the fracture…which inevitably led to death.
That being said, a major fracture and surgery can definitely result in a functional decline compared to how the person was pre-fall.

R84, I'm older, and I'm sick and tired of the gerontocracy in Washington. Until recently, one dared not speak of it here, even though it applies to both parties.
I want our elected officials to be young enough that they have to lie in the bed they make. An 80 or 90 year old can fuck everything up and shrug -- "après moi, le deluge" -- secure in the knowledge that they won't live to deal with the mess they leave behind.
Plus, people get set in their ways as they get older. It happens to everyone. The advantage is that it gives the government some stability, but the price is that it also gives it rigidity. The world changes fast, the post-WWII order is gone, and we need to be flexible.

I'm surprised that Nancy is still trying to block AOC's career. It's clear that AOC has been slowly shifting center-ward, over the past couple of years. I assume that shift will pick up apace, with the current political climate (and when I say "shift centerward", I mean center-left).
AOC is a lot of things, but she is intelligent. Intelligent enough to realize that to have longevity in the House, and have real power there, she has to make compromises and have the appearance of being someone who will compromise. Sticking with the "Squad" isn't going to do that for her or her reputation, hence her distancing there.
I personally believe she wants to be Speaker at some point. I don't think she'll ever be seen as POTUS or cabinet material, she's not meant for the executive branch imo.
