Lmao. Sorry Nicholas and Jacob and Drew.
I knew Nicholas wasn’t getting this role. He is not high profile enough. These stars in these hit streaming series swear they are movie stars. No bitch, you gotta build that resume a little bit more. Also I would pound Austin to ecstasy.

Sorry but I had to laugh. With how aggressive Nicholas has been campaigning to get cast, I know this is a blow.
This has been a bad week for him so far. No GG nom while his co-lead got nominated, the hot Italian criminal has completely taken over social media and has even double the amount of love online in just a short amount of days, now this? Someone needs to do a wellness check on him.

by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 11, 2024 6:22 PM |
On the one hand, there will be nudity and sex scenes. On the other, this is just an awful casting choice. He does not have the looks or acting talent required for the role.

R9 Chavez doesn’t either. He looks literally nothing like the character in the book. His complexion can be white as snow but his face is still not Bateman.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | December 11, 2024 6:26 PM |
…although if it is a roman à clef about Armie Hammer then I could see why Guadagnino went this direction, because there is a bit of a resemblance. Both dirty blondes with big cold blue eyes.
Butler would at least attempt Hammer’s pseudo-transatlantic accent.

R6 because it will never measure up to Bale’s performance. Bale is an actor’s actor and Butler is a Disney star who got lucky.

Austin Butler looks like he's on the verge of tears at all times. He does not possess the maniacal glee that Bale brought to the role originally. I'm actually disgusted by this casting choice. Even Timotay would be more convincing as Bateman.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | December 11, 2024 6:38 PM |
I think Austin is a good (potentially great) actor, but that role is indelibly Bale’s. Memes are all over the place with Bale. It will be very hard for Butler to have that impact even with his talent.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | December 11, 2024 6:40 PM |
Butler has a white trash look about him. Patrick Bateman is supposed to look very classically handsome. Christian Bale was perfect.

Austin Butler in a remake of Napoleon Dynamite, this I could buy. But as Patrick Bateman? It's like if you tried to cast Garrett Clayton as Rambo - completely daft and unbelievable.

Butler will get away with it if he is indeed playing an Armie Hammer surrogate. Hammer was, well, hammy. But he cannot play Patrick Bateman at any level close to Bale.

[quote]the 2000 film flopped but gained popularity later. It happens.
The 2000 version flopped commercially but it was anchored by an iconic performance from Christian Bale that put him firmly on the map in the acting world. He was chosen as Batman only a couple of years later, partly on the recognition of his work in AP.
It will be very difficult for anyone to top that performance.

by Anonymous | reply 43 | December 11, 2024 7:19 PM |
Yes r38 because it was a highly risky film and move for him, as a younger actor with only modest name recognition. Thankfully he hit it out of the park and it put him on the A-list, at least among his peers (if not Hollywood proper).
Asking a new actor to re-imagine the role and try to top that, especially a younger established actor like Butler, is strange.

by Anonymous | reply 53 | December 11, 2024 7:51 PM |
This remake craze is boring and sign the death of any creativity. That said, while Bale is indeed iconic as Bateman, the movie itself deviates wildly from the book, mostly in its tone.
I don’t think i have seen anything with Butler, but Elordi was sort of playing Patrick Bateman in Euphoria, so this will be a new take.

I would argue that Bateman neither straight nor gay nor bi. He's a total freak who is trying his best to imitate the humans around him. It doesn't really matter if the remake has him killing female or male prostitutes.
And I agree with r47. The movie elevated a mediocre book. This is like remaking Silence of the Lambs.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | December 11, 2024 8:30 PM |
R58 no. The person said he doesn’t want it woke. Making him Bi or gay is WOKE. Patrick was neither. He actually loathed gay men. The only thing that suggested he was anything but straight was the one time he rents a tranny porn video.
I’ve read the book 3 times.

When the book was first out BEE cane to London to do a reading and interview on stage at the Institute of Contemporary Arts. I went and was sat behind a row of beefy, Bateman-esque financial trader types, American, with expensive watches and knitwear. When BEE did the reading they treated it like stand up comedy. They laughed loudly at all the violence, hatred, and all the bits that were meant to be satirising people like THEM. It was very disturbing. They clearly loved the book - unironically.

[quote]Personally I actually think Glen Powell would have been a good Patrick Bateman.
Glen Powell looks inbred.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | December 12, 2024 5:43 PM |
[quote] Butler is exciting onscreen. He has obvious movie star appeal. I only know of Chavez and Koch from DL.
Agree with r118 here.
Seriously, I'm indifferent to Timothee Chalamet, neither dislike or like him, but when he shares the screen with Butler in Dune II it's no contest, Butler has far more charisma.
And his performance as Elvis was very compelling.
I'll leave it up to you experts on Bateman whether he was miscast here or not.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | December 12, 2024 6:45 PM |
OK, fine, R142, but they could at least let Glen Powell be one of Patrick's victims. He'd be perfect. He loves to talk and brags a lot.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | December 12, 2024 7:14 PM |
Who is asking for this movie? The original was bad enough.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | December 12, 2024 8:52 PM |
Nicholas Hoult would have been great.
Has Austin ever done any nudity?
by Anonymous | reply 146 | December 12, 2024 9:35 PM |
Tall built and handsome Nicholas Hoult would have been a great choice.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | December 12, 2024 9:45 PM |
Another remake nobody asked for. Nobody.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | December 12, 2024 11:04 PM |
I agree that while I don’t find Austin Butler that good looking, he was wonderful as Elvis and sexy, scary and charismatic in Dune 2. I didn’t know it was him in Dune 2 while watching and then I immediately looked it up because his talent stood out.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | December 13, 2024 12:09 AM |
I love the idea of Nicholas Hoult. Great idea.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | December 13, 2024 1:58 AM |
R143: Butler honestly has the better chance in the future at getting mature leading man roles than Chalamet.
by Anonymous | reply 151 | December 13, 2024 3:48 AM |
Nicholas Hoult isn't very good and I only see the little kid with a bowl cut from About a Boy. Great movie.

Who on DL finds him attractive?
by Anonymous | reply 154 | December 14, 2024 1:13 AM |
Only LOGAN PAUL can play this role in a meaningful way
by Anonymous | reply 155 | December 14, 2024 1:35 AM |
and only the safdies can direct it
by Anonymous | reply 156 | December 14, 2024 1:38 AM |
Austin definitely has major BDE.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | December 17, 2024 8:21 PM |
Austin is the best actor out of the bunch. I'll admit I have a soft spot for him. He's not a nepo baby and had to scrap his way up the Hollywood ladder, which makes his unapologetic desire for glory quite endearing to me.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | December 17, 2024 8:29 PM |
He’s too odd looking.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | December 17, 2024 8:39 PM |
He's too beautiful to play Patrick
by Anonymous | reply 160 | December 17, 2024 9:36 PM |
I’m reading the novel and it isn’t different from the film other than being more graphic, gruesome and disgusting. I’m not sure why a redo is necessary and some of the shit in the book does not need to be on film.
by Anonymous | reply 161 | December 28, 2024 1:54 AM |
I don't know why they even have to remake it. IMO Christian Bale was brilliant and completely embodied the character. Even more important is that the story was of its time. The whole Wall Street thing, the comparing of the gold embossed business cards, the insistence on getting reservations at hard to get restaurants, the whole thing was a fable for the times. It put a mirror up to our society and our culture at a time that was both shocking and prescient. To do it now is an after the fact move.

I think I read it when I was a teen and getting turned on by Patrick talking about his cock and explicit sex. I hope Austin is explicit

R111 Chavez isn’t on any respected Hollywood directors list. He wasn’t in contention. The role was down between Jacob Elordi, Drew Starkey and Austin Butler. Luca almost went with Elordi but decided Butler fit his version of Bateman best.
The Chavez stans are so out of touch they think that them repeating his name all over the internet means he was in contention. He wasn’t. Luca probably doesn’t even know he exists.
by Anonymous | reply 164 | December 28, 2024 9:51 AM |
R161 the book is very different actually
by Anonymous | reply 165 | December 28, 2024 9:55 AM |
Jacob would have made a gorgeous Patrick. Not that average Chavez, who didn't even show his pinga in the Menendez show.
by Anonymous | reply 166 | December 28, 2024 11:26 AM |
Again, Chavez was never up for the role.
by Anonymous | reply 167 | December 28, 2024 11:28 AM |
The book is dated but who knows if they will set it in the 80’s or today.
by Anonymous | reply 168 | December 28, 2024 12:36 PM |
R165 I am 150+ pages in, and it is the same. There is still a lot left to read, so I’ll take your word for it. If I can make it through…
by Anonymous | reply 169 | December 28, 2024 1:07 PM |
R169 you aren’t reading if you aren’t seeing the difference by now
by Anonymous | reply 170 | December 28, 2024 3:00 PM |
R168 it’s not dated. It’s a period piece now
by Anonymous | reply 171 | December 28, 2024 3:00 PM |
Drew Starkey/Harris Dickinson would’ve been a better choice.
by Anonymous | reply 172 | December 28, 2024 5:08 PM |
You’re saying that Austin Butler doesn’t look the part but seeing Harris Dickinson does? That’s massive miscasting.
by Anonymous | reply 173 | December 28, 2024 5:16 PM |
[quote] You’re saying that Austin Butler doesn’t look the part but seeing Harris Dickinson does?
No I’m not. I’m saying Drew Starkey/Harris Dickinson would’ve been a better choice.
by Anonymous | reply 174 | December 28, 2024 5:18 PM |
Will Austin Butler be doing the weird role immersion method acting he did for Elvis for this? Should the homeless and random cats near ATMs be concerned?
by Anonymous | reply 175 | December 28, 2024 5:35 PM |
Butler seems as good a choice as any. Here’s hoping those beautiful dick-sucking lips of his are used to full effect.
by Anonymous | reply 176 | December 29, 2024 12:56 PM |
R170 agree to disagree. I finished the novel and it is not that different. Both are ambiguous.
by Anonymous | reply 177 | December 29, 2024 1:47 PM |
Let’s hope so,R178. The book made Patrick Bateman sound like he looked like a young Matt Bomer
by Anonymous | reply 179 | January 10, 2025 9:49 PM |
Fuck you r179! I can still pass for 29 GODDAMMIT! I've had more work done than the Eiffel Tower and I'm still as hot as guys in their 20s! I am! I really am!
by Anonymous | reply 180 | January 10, 2025 11:27 PM |
People just associate Butler with rednecks because he played Elvis.
by Anonymous | reply 181 | January 10, 2025 11:46 PM |
Not “just”, R181.
by Anonymous | reply 182 | January 10, 2025 11:51 PM |
Austin Butler looks like he had rickets when he was a kid.
by Anonymous | reply 183 | January 11, 2025 12:12 AM |
I think he's very cute.
by Anonymous | reply 184 | January 11, 2025 12:15 AM |
(Though I don't really understand the fairly trend for long-necked male celebs.)
by Anonymous | reply 185 | January 11, 2025 12:19 AM |
Austin butler is ok looking imo. Not ugly or gorgeous. I think the issue is that he’s a bit of a mouth breather and looks dumb. It’s hard to envision him as a classy but very superficial wealthy businessman,
by Anonymous | reply 186 | January 11, 2025 1:55 AM |
For fucks' sake.
Bret Easton Ellis, whatever you think of him, has been generally done well by Hollywood. Rules of Attraction is one of the best campus black comedies ever made, Less Than Zero is a triumph of style over substance (which was the book's message) and even The Informers is better than I think people gave it credit for. But American Psycho is the best of the bunch. It looks great, has a perfect soundtrack and there's simply not an off-note or bad performance in the whole thing, even from actors whom I otherwise don't care for.
There is no reason for a remake (that's not actually a remake, because it's just the same story, but., like, different).
Based on what this director did to Suspiria - and Tilda Swinton was amazing - his American Psycho will just be a bloody slog of ugliness stripped of the book's social satire and the earlier film's comedy and irony.
