‘Harry Potter’ casting rumors

A black Snape? People are gonna lose their shit.

Sarah Horgan as McGonagall would be lovely. She has the range, but can she do a Scottish accent?

Mark Strong as an actual gay Dumbledaddy would be sublime.

by Anonymousreply 1December 7, 2024 3:47 AM

Why can’t Snape be Black? There are Black wizards and witches.

by Anonymousreply 2December 7, 2024 3:49 AM

r2 I agree and I don't have an issue with it, but I still think the usual suspects will lose it at the news.

It's a smart way of compensating for not having a black Herrmione like in the play. (I just assume they'll go with a white or a Latino one for the show.)

by Anonymousreply 3December 7, 2024 3:53 AM

r1 Mark Rylance is also in talks for the role and while he's the better actor, I'd have to go with Strong as well, just because a sexy Dumbledore would be a sight to behold. We already got a glimpse of that with Jude Law and I want more of it!

by Anonymousreply 4December 7, 2024 3:55 AM

Well Snape is an ex-wizard Nazi, incel/simp with “greasy black hair, a hooked nose, and sallow skin.” It’s just visually a miscast.

by Anonymousreply 5December 7, 2024 3:58 AM

Why can't they just get Jude Law again? Age him a bit.

by Anonymousreply 6December 7, 2024 3:58 AM

I don't think Jude Law would sign up to do a show for 7 to 10 years.

by Anonymousreply 7December 7, 2024 4:00 AM

Who's Jude Law?

by Anonymousreply 8December 7, 2024 4:04 AM

Why can't Snape be a differently-abled Indigenous woman, for that matter?

by Anonymousreply 9December 7, 2024 4:08 AM

The lady who did Poor Things was just hired as the costume designer for the show. Can't wait to see her take on Dumbledore's robes. Michael Gambon's costumes in the later movies were such a downgrade from Richard Harris' ones. He's supposed to look colourful per the books, not like some North Korean headmaster.

Wizard Nazis are not racists. They are anti “mudbloods.” As for the description of the character’s appearance in the novels, who really cares? It is important that Snape be socially awkward and plausible as a Deatheater. What he looks like us not essential.

by Anonymousreply 11December 7, 2024 4:13 AM

Billy Porter should play Minerva McGonagall, as a proud and sassy drag queen.

by Anonymousreply 12December 7, 2024 7:33 PM

SHARON Horgan would be a bad Mcgonagall. I liked her in Todd Margaret and I like her in Bad Sisters but her range is very limited. Rachel Weisz would be insane to turn this down.

by Anonymousreply 13December 7, 2024 10:00 PM

I’m so glad they are going to do this again. I love watching cute, apparently talented child actors grow up to be unattractive, bad adult actors.

And it will be fascinating to see new insights a fresh set of eyes can pull out of the subtlety and depth of the novels. What the films really suffered from is brevity. I can’t wait to see what quadrupling the time spend on each one brings us. Perhaps we will get lessons detailed enough for us to learn magic ourselves.

And backstories! We’ll have time to learn of the origins of Professor Sprout. See Hagrid’s childhood. Explore the complex childhood and adolescent relationships between Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs. Finally learn the full history of Gringott’s Bank!

by Anonymousreply 14December 8, 2024 1:24 PM

r14 Of all the backstories, I hope they explore Dumbledore's the most, for obvious homosexual reasons.

by Anonymousreply 15December 8, 2024 2:07 PM

It will also be interesting to see what some REAL actors can do with the adult roles instead of the second-rate talent they employed in the films.

by Anonymousreply 16December 8, 2024 2:15 PM

r14, it's scary how much you know about the universe. I was on a commercial shoot yesterday and the house that we filmed in had a very extensive HP basement, filled iwth floating candles, a potion station, a faux hearth with letters flying out,, and every single toy, figurine (including a huge wall of Funkos), Lego sets, books, wallpaper, hidden door in bookcase- it was mental. The owner (who must have been in her 60's was also a hardcore Taylor Swift fan. *shudders*

by Anonymousreply 17December 8, 2024 2:18 PM

r16 Who was second-rate in the movies? I mostly recall veterans of the British film industry in adult roles.

by Anonymousreply 18December 8, 2024 2:19 PM

[quote] R14], it's scary how much you know about the universe.

I just rewatched the last six films.

by Anonymousreply 19December 8, 2024 2:25 PM

Dumbledore was born in 1881 and was 115 years old when he died in Half-Blood Prince.

How the fuck they gonna age Mark Strong by that much?

by Anonymousreply 20December 8, 2024 2:26 PM

I was being sarcastic. They cast most of the greatest living British actors. It’s easier to list the ones that escaped—Helen Mirren, Ian McKellan (who was tied up with LOTR), Anthony Hopkins, Michael Caine, Colin Firth, Christopher Lee (who was offered Dumbledore).

by Anonymousreply 21December 8, 2024 2:30 PM

Hugh Grant would have been PERFECT as Professor Lockheart. Out of all the actors who turned down roles, that one hits the hardest for me. Tilda Swinton, Naomi Watts, Michael Caine etc wouldn't have improved those characters or made them more memorable.

by Anonymousreply 22December 8, 2024 8:41 PM

Sean Connery would have been an interesting Dumbledore, but Gambon was more seamless with Richard Harris.

by Anonymousreply 23December 8, 2024 8:47 PM

Ruth Wilson as repressed lesbian Severessa Snape.

by Anonymousreply 24December 8, 2024 8:59 PM

Rebel Wilson as... something. Anything.

by Anonymousreply 25December 8, 2024 9:04 PM

In all seriousness, Morganna Robinson as either Petubia Dursley or Rita Skeeter.

by Anonymousreply 26December 8, 2024 9:05 PM

Do we have a credible successor to Warwick Davis yet, or is he gonna reprise his role as Flitwick? I've always wanted to see more of that character.

by Anonymousreply 27December 8, 2024 9:09 PM

Black people are scary!!!

by Anonymousreply 28December 8, 2024 9:49 PM

That’s not true, r28. We just wish they would stick to playing Black roles. You know like the wonderful Sidney Poitier. It’s not fair if they start taking the White roles because they’d never let a White actor play a Black role. Not anymore.

by Anonymousreply 29December 8, 2024 10:39 PM

Bambi was born to play Rita Skeeter.

Regardless of the desire some fans have to see subplots that were condensed/cut from the films, something this series is really going to struggle with is finding a new cast that can stand on its own. The film’s cast (adults in particular) was so highly regarded that following that is going to be a challenge.

by Anonymousreply 31December 15, 2024 10:15 AM

The kids on TikTok aren't having it and love the movies.

by Anonymousreply 32December 15, 2024 10:24 AM

OMG, can't someone have an original idea? The movies beautifully realised Rowling's vision--and supplied her with the much-needed editor that her publishers didn't after the third book.

I'm disappointed she hasn't left it at that.

by Anonymousreply 33December 15, 2024 10:41 AM

Tens of thousands of kiddies have auditioned!

[quote]There was an audible gasp during this month’s Max Showcase in London when Francesca Gardiner, the new Harry Potter showrunner, let slip that a whopping 32,000 people had auditioned for what might well be the biggest three acting gigs of the decade.

[quote]The kids on TikTok aren't having it and love the movies.

The kids on TikTok weren't having Trump either. Social media isn't real life, I can't believe some of you still haven't figured that out after last month.

Also, there's a huge need for HP content in foreign markets, it's why The Rings of Power is still going on despite being just mid. So this show will do more than fine, ratings-wise.

by Anonymousreply 35December 16, 2024 6:16 PM

Well, this was inevitable – trannies kicking up a stink. Surprised it's taken them this long.

[quote]Warner Bros. Discovery and the BBC have been accused of double standards on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) after both organizations have stood by J.K. Rowling amid a hardening in her transgender rights rhetoric.

[quote]The support for Rowling’s work has alarmed members of the transgender community working in the media, who have noted how the writer’s language on trans issues has evolved from measured disagreement to a coarser tone over the past four years. In interviews with Deadline, these people argued that WBD and the BBC’s platforming of Rowling’s work sits uncomfortably with internal policies around fairness and inclusivity for transgender employees.

[quote]Rowling declined to comment, but tweeted on Thursday that her only regret is not speaking out sooner.

Guess they haven't gotten the memo about the new post-election cultural landscape just yet. No one cares anymore.

I think it's perfectly appropriate for Snape to be played by a Black actor. Not so much Mama Rose in Gypsy.

People want even more of this derivative garbage?

by Anonymousreply 38December 19, 2024 4:18 PM

R36 I’m not surprised Rowling’s stance has hardened, given the level of abuse that’s been thrown her way. She has a very sharp tongue and sense of humour - throw a grenade at her and she’ll throw ten back at you.

The main Harry Potter subreddit is basically just racist comments right now. Oh, and the trannies elsewhere declaring anyone who even contemplates watching this as pre-cancelled.

Such interesting times we live in. At least it can't get any worse, right?

by Anonymousreply 49April 14, 2025 2:12 PM

One is profoundly honored and humbled that the audience has awarded one the trust to curate the character of Professor McGonagall. Despite one identifying as non Wiccan. One can not help but empathize and perchance feel a soupcon of guilt for taking a role from an actual practicing Witch.

by Anonymousreply 51April 14, 2025 3:01 PM

r51 He doesn't look as good without facial hair because of the small chin (I have the same issue), but something tells me a bearded Snape would be a bridge too far.

by Anonymousreply 52April 14, 2025 3:03 PM

I'm waiting to hear why a black man couldn't possibly be a good enough magician to teach at Hogwarts and it has to be DEI.

by Anonymousreply 53April 14, 2025 3:11 PM

r53 There's no single in-universe argument against it, people are just so emotionally married to the book version, in which he's white.

The sneakier among them are saying it's problematic that Harry will have an issue with the one black professor, as if protecting black people's portrayal in the media is their main concern now. I swear racists will contort themselves every which way when they're throwing their little strops.

by Anonymousreply 54April 14, 2025 3:19 PM

Harry is a trans lesbian sex worker of color

by Anonymousreply 55April 14, 2025 3:23 PM

R51 Anyone is easier on the eye than Rickman. But I think this actor will do a great job, hopefully give the role some nuance. Horse-faced queens Rickman gave the same over the top performance in every villain role.

I think Essiedu was in the demon episode of Black Mirror? Loved him in that.

I assume one or two of the main three kids will also be black of Latino and have no problem with it. I’m curious as to who will be cast as Sirius Black. He was my favorite character.

by Anonymousreply 56April 14, 2025 3:24 PM

R54 Well, why does he have to be to the one black professor? Maybe Sprout, Flitwick and Slughorn will be black, too. Who cares, as long as they give good performances.

Lol at the poster who commented on Gambon’s drab robes. DumbleDOUR.

Harris’s rich velvet costumes were so much better and more on point for Dumbledore. He just got the character, too.

by Anonymousreply 57April 14, 2025 3:28 PM

I enjoy Rowling’s Cormoran Strike books, but the TV adaptation is low budget in many ways, and the past 2 or 3 series have suffered from a lack of names in the juicy roles (with the notable exception of the excellent Ruth Sheen), not even the ones you see in every other British crime drama. Presumably because actors are leery of the negative publicity attached to Rowling’s gender opinions.

And they are primarily directed by Susan Tully aka Michelle from EastEnders.

McTeer, Lithgow and Essiesu are exciting choices so hopefully Harry Potter attracts better talent behind the camera as well.

by Anonymousreply 58April 14, 2025 3:30 PM

[quote]Lol at the poster who commented on Gambon’s drab robes. DumbleDOUR.

Director thought gritty meant drab, hence those boring ass consumes. I laughed when they tried dragging him into Azkaban, I thought well he's already dressed like a prisoner, lol.

by Anonymousreply 59April 14, 2025 3:32 PM

If this is truly color blind casting and they don't change the story to insert race as part of the reason for the animosity between James and Severus or Harry and Severus, then it's a good choice. Both racists and the woke will not like that for different reasons, but the world does not revolve around America's racial hangups and it's nice to see a show just be like race doesn't matter.

by Anonymousreply 60April 14, 2025 3:34 PM

[quote]I think Essiedu was in the demon episode of Black Mirror? Loved him in that.

Seriously. This will do massive numbers abroad where there's huge appetite for an HP show. People are once again just caught in their little – very local and very online – bubble.

by Anonymousreply 62April 14, 2025 3:37 PM

If you live in Flyoverstan, a new Harry Potter store in Chicago opened last week. Interior details were built by the same UK workers who built sets for the film series. It’s a “goblet of fire” theme, to distinguish it from the store in Manhattan’s Flatiron.

by Anonymousreply 63April 14, 2025 3:53 PM

Oh, that's cute. I'd love to go to an HP-themed store and buy some overpriced crap there I definitely don't need. I'd be paying for the experience, basically.

by Anonymousreply 64April 14, 2025 3:59 PM

You can pick your own wand! At the right price ;)

by Anonymousreply 65April 14, 2025 4:01 PM

The HP films were a great income stream for exceedingly overqualified British pros who could fit their roles into their schedules, but you'd never get a lineup like that for a TV series.

by Anonymousreply 66April 14, 2025 4:12 PM

Lithgow has said he'll just fly in quickly for his scenes, so it won't be that much of a commitment for him. Only problem is that he'll be old-old by the time HBP is filmed.

by Anonymousreply 67April 14, 2025 4:19 PM

Pappa cast as Snape.

by Anonymousreply 68April 14, 2025 11:28 PM

This thread reminded me to re-watch the Fantastic Beasts movies. You know what was a colossal miscasting?

Johnny Depp.

Who is Jude Law going to want to fuck?

Late stage Johnny Depp or Mads Mikkelsen?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 69April 15, 2025 12:29 AM

Worse yet, in the first movie, we learn that Colin Farrell's character is an imposter. When it was revealed he was actually Grindelwald and would be played by Johnny Depp going forward, I lost all interest in the character. And the movies, really.

by Anonymousreply 70April 15, 2025 8:23 AM

Do we think Christian Bale will return?

by Anonymousreply 71April 15, 2025 8:39 AM

Yeah, it should have just been either Colin Farrell or Mads the whole time, Depp looked so slimy and sweaty and repulsive in that role. Kinda perfect for Voldemort, but not a great viewing experience for us.

by Anonymousreply 72April 15, 2025 8:42 AM

Bale wasn't in any of the HP movies, was he? He was considered for young Voldemort, but Jude Law got that part in the end.

Besides, I think he's done with franchises.

by Anonymousreply 73April 15, 2025 8:45 AM

It seems like Harry Potter, LOTR, and Marvel/DC have hoovered up all the entertainment money for the past twenty years.

by Anonymousreply 74April 15, 2025 3:31 PM

I can't recall Rowling describing the colour of any of the professors. The Weasleys are obviously white because they're ginger-haired; Harry has his mother Lily's green eyes (not reflected in the movie because kiddie Daniel couldn't bear the contact lenses); the Malfoys all have Targaryen pale hair; and the Dursleys definitely behave White. Harry's first love is clearly of Asian origin. Beyond that, I can't remember a lot of clues to anyone's colour in the books.

by Anonymousreply 75April 16, 2025 10:25 AM

Angelina Johnson was described in a later novel as a “black Girl”. But mostly Rowling used ethnic names as an indicator. Like the sisters Padma and Parvati Patil. And Kingsley Shacklebolt!

The original on stage Hermiones was cast as black because the creators liked the actress from the workshops so much. And then oftentimes overseas productions have followed suit by continuing to cast a black actress in the role. So maybe there will be another non-white Hermione on the TV series. But I imagine when it comes to the children they want good actors with sane families and ethnicity for someone like Hermione is a secondary concern.

by Anonymousreply 76April 16, 2025 11:05 AM

If Harry's, Hermione's and Ron's meeting on the train won't be "My name is Hermione. I go by they/them pronouns", etc., I'll be disappointed. (I take no issue with Snape being black, but I hate the performative mindset that leads them to the casting choice.)

by Anonymousreply 77April 16, 2025 12:51 PM

Hermione has bushy, uncontrollable hair in the books, which could be read as belonging to a black girl, or to a white/Jewish girl who hasn't learned upper-class grooming, like AnnE in The Princess Diaries.

Anyway, there are no real clues to the ethnicity of the professors, except that I suppose McGonagall's name indicates some Scottish ancestry. Face it, JK probably had Maggie Smith in mind from the start.

Tom Riddle as a child is supposed to have a slight but disturbing resemblance to Harry, but nobody was going to cast a black Voldemort anyway. However Sirius Black is asking for it, nomenclature-wise. Also, we first encounter him as a dangerous convict and then discover he's a hero who has been falsely imprisoned, so there's a good woke trope.

by Anonymousreply 78April 17, 2025 2:15 AM

Make the whole cast little people and let's start a national conversation worth having

by Anonymousreply 79April 17, 2025 2:29 AM

'Lil Potter

by Anonymousreply 80April 17, 2025 2:30 AM

Snape isn't cool enough to be black. If they wanted to race-swap, they should have gone with Sirius or Lupin.

Anyway, I'm bored of everything being remade. It's only 14 years since the last Harry Potter film was released. Couldn't they have done a spin-off about the Marauders' time at Hogwarts?

by Anonymousreply 81April 17, 2025 7:55 PM

The Fantastic Beasts spin offs were ass. Best to stick with the originals.

Though can see Snape as a blerd.

by Anonymousreply 82April 17, 2025 9:55 PM

Harry, Ron and Hermione have been cast.

Hermione is brown, so they split the baby between the books and the play.

Harry Potter has become a rite of passage of childhood. It skews younger than that used to, with most kids getting into it around second grade, but almost everyone has a strong awareness of the franchise, even if they’ve never themselves read the books. It’s sort of like Disney or Sesame Street at this point (it’s actually outpaced the latter). So yes, this is going to be huge, and the trans activist are going to lose their fucking mind when they see how people don’t give a shit about their attempts to cancel Rowling.

by Anonymousreply 87May 27, 2025 3:34 PM

I enjoyed the original films. I think they did a good job condensing things from the novels, which someone pointed out earlier and I agree with. In a way, I think this series is unnecessary, but I will probably still watch it. The original films didn't get bogged down in taking every opportunity to make "teachable moments" with heavy-handed, thinly veiled politics, which I hope this series will avoid, but most of the time it seems Hollywood can't help themselves in that regard, for at least the last 15 years or so. So, I have my doubts.

by Anonymousreply 88May 27, 2025 3:52 PM

Most of the charm of the books comes from all those cosy, almost zen-like moments spent at Hogwarts. Which the movies obviously aren't best suited for because they have so much plot to cover. I just hope Hogwarts doesn't look as cold and sterile as it did in the Fantastic Beasts movies. Make it look janky and lived-in, like in the books.

by Anonymousreply 89May 27, 2025 4:35 PM

R83 They all look appropriate for the parts.

by Anonymousreply 90May 27, 2025 6:39 PM

I'm a member of my town's Facebook group where people giveaway unwanted items to people who will happily take them off your hands.

Every time someone offers Harry Potter stuff, be it books, costumes, games, toys, there is a huge response from people asking to be considered and names are drawn out of a hat.

For all the performative "boycott her!" campaigns JKR has never suffered a dip in popularity.

by Anonymousreply 92May 27, 2025 7:13 PM

Exactly, R92. For kids in the five to nine range, it’s the most popular book, costume, party theme, etc. Which is a little weird because the books are for a slightly older audience (the final two movies are PG-13), but it remains true nonetheless.

by Anonymousreply 93May 28, 2025 12:59 AM

I also thought it was funny watching influencers invited to preview Epic Universe. So many of them were being performative about their resistance to JK while posting whimsical selfies on the rides. Even they can’t let go of the world that she and she alone created, no matter how hard they might want to.

by Anonymousreply 94May 28, 2025 1:01 AM

R94, a friend of mine was an HP influencer- I don't remember if if was IG or YT that paid for her to live in London for 6 months for the anticipatory opening and attendance to the HP studio tour. I just visited ther IG page, and she stopped ilate '22, after she had a baby. Her husband is a huge video game influencer (he's the one who got her into the influencing game), so they rely on his income. She photoshops all her HP content (magical things happening and all), so it's too much for her to post every week and raise a kid (so she says)

by Anonymousreply 95May 28, 2025 3:52 PM

The Reddit comments under this news are mostly "god, I feel so bad for these kids". These same people will now take a breath and hound them for the rest of their lives for working with JKR.

I think it'll be a sobering, November-like shock to many of them when the ratings come out. They'll see just how insular their culture wars are outside of their online bubble.

by Anonymousreply 96May 28, 2025 4:31 PM

I do kind of agree its going to be a bit of a thankless job even ignoring the fact the internet has decided Rowling is slightly worse than an SS concentration camp commander. Those films aren't that old and are still pretty well loved. Its not like the Percy Jackson show where its less popular as a franchise and the old films were apparently terrible.

by Anonymousreply 97May 28, 2025 5:59 PM

When the first tv series is released it will be over 25 years since the first film.

In the same period there's been 3 Spidermans, 3 Supermans, 3 Fantastic Fours, 3 Batmans and 3 Jokers. And then there's all those Hunger Games films with the original adaptations, the prequels and whatever they're making now.

When the first film was made Rowling hadn't published the final novels, Alan Rickman was famously considering quitting before Rowling told him Snape's secret. The new writers can look at the story as a whole, make it fresh and look at some of the smaller points that didn't make the film because of time constraints.

I've never read the books but loved the films and the characterisations. It will be hard to create a cast to compare to Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, Julie Walters etc, but there are some amazing actors around and it will be fun to see what they do differently.

[quote] I also thought it was funny watching influencers invited to preview Epic Universe.

Gosh imagine, what a misuse of time.

I really don't like the Dursley casting they seem too young.

I'm impressed - Johnny Flynn, Daniel Rigby, Bel Powley, Bertie Carvel and Katherine Parkinson. They've all been nominated for either an Olivier or BAFTA. Parkinson and Rigby have both won BAFTAs and Carvel has two Oliviers and Tony.

by Anonymousreply 101June 9, 2025 4:02 PM

They’re actually casting talented actors. People who don’t “need” the work, either, which is cool.

by Anonymousreply 102June 9, 2025 4:04 PM

r100 I'm thrown off by the fact that Petunia Dursley is now being played by a 33-year-old, but I guess it makes sense when they have a teenage son. We're all used to Fiona Shaw in that role, but she might have been too old for the part. Richard Griffiths even more so as Vernon.

by Anonymousreply 103June 9, 2025 4:11 PM

I think Harry’s parents would have still been in their 30s when he first attended Hogwarts, they were reasonably young when they had him. So I assume the Dursleys wouldn’t be much older than 40-ish. Rugby and Powell scrub up very nicely in their publicity shots, but they act plain characters all the time, so their appearances won’t be an issue.

Remember, Rowling’s dream choice for Snape was Tim Roth, who is 15 years younger than (the excellent) Alan Rickman. Roth fit in culturally with Oldman, Thewlis and Spall, who came up in those 80s/90s kitchen sink Mike Leigh and Ken Loach films. So they’re casting age appropriate actors this time.

by Anonymousreply 104June 9, 2025 4:12 PM

I checked the Brodway subreddit earlier today because of the Tonys and saw they were trying to cancel Felton for these JKR remarks. I guess they were feeling frustrated because their attempted Sherzinger cancellation blew up in their faces so spectacularly.

JKR tweeted the BBC story about Tom Felton's casting. She knows.

by Anonymousreply 106June 9, 2025 4:23 PM

r103 I think its because the Dursleys always felt sort of Hyacinth Bucket like to me they hated magic because it was odd and "what will her at number 22 think if she finds out?" it just feels weirder when you have a young couple in their early 30s like that than a couple who look like this. Still they might be able to pull it off.

by Anonymousreply 107June 9, 2025 4:24 PM

Actually, r33, it's more age appropriate for a woman in her 40s to play the role of mum to a teen than a 33-year-old woman. Richard Griffiths was also age appropriate.

by Anonymousreply 108June 9, 2025 4:27 PM

Tom Felton is reputedly going to act as a child actor support liaison for the TV show; apparently inspired by how Jason Isaacs was a a fun and caring mentor for him in set.

They are still close, a significant chunk of Isaacs’ sm are various congratulatory birthday posts and the like to Tom from his “Bad Dad”.

by Anonymousreply 109June 9, 2025 4:30 PM

Actually, they were high school sweethearts, they very likely had Harry right after Hogwarts. So 33 tracks.

Plus, you know, they'll be shooting this show for a decade, so she'll be around 43 by the time it's finished.

by Anonymousreply 110June 9, 2025 4:32 PM

I only just now clocked that Katherine Parkinson of the IT Crowd IS Molly Weasley! Oh, I love that so much.

by Anonymousreply 111June 9, 2025 4:36 PM

A reminder that for all the narcissist authoritarian Nicola Coughlan types who sign open letters and condemn people for their views there are so many more people who don't think JKR is an evil nazi and will be happy to take part in a tv adaptation of a series of beloved novels.

by Anonymousreply 112June 9, 2025 4:59 PM

r112 It's been so interesting – and also highly entertaining – watching these people go through various stages of shock. The first shock was the show even being greenlit. Then the casting announcements started coming in and it dawned on them that this is actually happening. John Lithgow was its own mini shock as it meant this wasn't going to be like WoT, i.e. populated by newbie actors desperate for work.

I suspect the final, biggest shock of all will come when the ratings are in and they see just how well this is doing at home and abroad.

Would not support anything Rawlins has written. What a disgusting person. Because she will get kickback for this series, many will boycott it.

Here's hoping it is a financial disaster for her and the production company working it.

by Anonymousreply 114June 9, 2025 5:44 PM

Dear JK Rawlins

I hate what your doing to trans people. Trans lives are human lives and your a Nazi!

Rot in hell TERF CUNT hope you get rapped

Love

R114 (they/them)

by Anonymousreply 115June 9, 2025 5:56 PM

R110, just so you know, the woman playing Petunia Dursley is 33.

Apologies, was replying to r103 at r108.

by Anonymousreply 116June 9, 2025 6:58 PM

What is r114 twittering on about?

by Anonymousreply 117June 9, 2025 6:59 PM

r116 I know she's 33, I was the one who first mentioned the new actress' age at r103.

by Anonymousreply 118June 9, 2025 7:03 PM

[quote] financial disaster for her

She's not self funding this you know? As for financial disaster it won't be. But its WB what difference would one more make

by Anonymousreply 119June 9, 2025 7:04 PM

r117 Probably copied a comment from under Deadline's article or something as a joke. I refuse to believe people that dumb post on DL.

by Anonymousreply 120June 9, 2025 7:05 PM

The ages of most adult characters were vague in the early books. It wasn’t until much later in the series we learned how young Harry’s parents were when they died (21). A lot of the adult cast were around a decade older than their book counterparts, but that hadn’t been known at the time of their casting and Rowling didn’t object. This series is attempting to be more in line with their intended ages, hence an early 30s Aunt Petunia.

by Anonymousreply 121June 9, 2025 7:13 PM

Jason Isaacs filmed a video congratulating Johnny Flynn on his casting. That's a nice thing to do.

by Anonymousreply 122June 9, 2025 8:56 PM

I really like Johnny Flynn. He's following in the fantasy realm footsteps of his brother Jerome, who played Bronn in "Game of Thrones".

by Anonymousreply 123June 9, 2025 10:27 PM

[quote]Frost revealed in the interview that he had to disable comments on his Instagram post about his casting due to the amount of backlash. However, he said of the author: “She’s allowed her opinion and I’m allowed mine, they just don’t align in any way, shape or form.”

[quote]When asked if he fears the debate over Rowling may overshadow the series, Frost said, “I don’t know,” adding: “But maybe it shouldn’t blow over? We shouldn’t just hope it will go away, because it makes it easier. Maybe we should educate ourselves.”

Yes, JK Rowling should educate herself on male rapists in women's prisons. I mean Jesus fuck does he know how bad this sounds.

It's not really surprising, Frost is due to be seen in something described as a comedy called Transaction written by a man called Jordan Gray who is best described as "Russell Brand with tits". Frost is the executive producer. Jordan Grey was a patron of an "LGBT youth charity" alongside a man recently convicted of child rape. They would go to schools and talk to 4-5 year olds about trans issues. Definitely not a red flag at all.

r123 I had no idea those two were brothers! I can see the resemblance when looking at Jerome's younger photos.

I thought Johnny was great in Emily and Ripley. He had a really intense presence in Ripley, which would be perfect for Lucius.

by Anonymousreply 125June 10, 2025 9:55 AM

Dreadful illiberal article in The Guardian which is very relaxed about the McCarthy witchhunt ongoing against the actors signing up for the series.

[quote]This isn’t going to go away any time soon. It’s more than a year until the Harry Potter series airs, which means it won’t finish for at least a decade. Lithgow has said it will probably be his final major role, since he will be pushing 90 by the time it wraps. Every time anything of note happens – any time there is a junket or a new actor is cast – the issue will be front and centre. The actors who oppose Rowling will be forced to do it over and over again. The same goes for the ones who agree with her. The ones who just want a quiet life will twist themselves into knots trying to say as little as possible in the face of direct questioning. There is no outrunning this.

Of course the only people interested in making TRANS RIGHTS an issue are the media sites desperate to generate clickbait revenue. And that includes The Guardian.

Black Snape Moan? I’m in!

[quote] Of course the only people interested in making TRANS RIGHTS an issue are the media sites desperate to generate clickbait revenue.

Yea JK hardly ever posts about trans people, she has lots going on in her life otherwise.

by Anonymousreply 128June 12, 2025 6:03 PM

JK responds to the latest trans craze, she doesn't wake up and randomly start tweeting about the trans for no reason. She doesn't post about "trans rights" but about how trans' demands for special privileges are taking away other people's rights.

by Anonymousreply 129June 12, 2025 7:58 PM

That's such a dumb article, r126. In decades' time the trans lunacy will have died down, it'll be widely understood what an insanity it was to try to pass laws and policies that state that men are women and must be treated like women, and the actors who trashed Rowling will pretend they never meant any such thing. As you say, it's only a tiny minority and dumb media sites such as the Guardian who are offended by anything Rowling has said.

by Anonymousreply 130June 12, 2025 8:01 PM

There was a rumor (of unknown genesis) that Paapa had stepped down (or been fired) from the role as Snape. I'm thinking it was just wishful thinking from people upset at the casting.
