The best movies of 2024, according to John Waters

The last one on this list in particular sounds intriguing.

[quote]Who could knock off Pedro Almodóvar, Sean Baker, and Guy Maddin’s terrific new films from my list this year? I’ll tell you who, and they’d probably understand why I’m giving this new (to me) filmmaker the spot. It’s an eerie, surprisingly haunting drama about two young gay coal miners, one of whom licks anal blood off his partner’s stomach and the other eats wax from his lover’s ears before they flee together to foreign shores as immigrants in a doomed floating container. It’s a beaut.

I watched Love Lies Bleeding last night. All respect to John Waters, but it certainly wouldn't be #1 on my list. I had a casual interest in seeing it but missed it in theaters. I liked the director's first film, Saint Maud, quite a bit. This was much different, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It got a little goofy at the end. I found Kristen Stewart mostly palatable in it, which is not always the case. It was kind of funny seeing Ed Harris play Jena Malone's on-screen dad again 25 years later (albeit with the two in VERY different roles).

Surprised that John didn’t include The Substance.
