Former Village Person Says YMCA is NOT a Gay Song

Well it’s definitely not now that Trump has rebranded it. But we all know it was then. Maybe not flyover. I wasn’t born but I know music history.

Victor Willis has posted on Facebook that the Village People (or an approximation thereof) will be performing "YMCA" at the inauguration.
He also took the time to post a warning that anybody who states publically that it is a gay song will be sued - by his wife. I guess that he had to reassure his new MAGAT audience that he's not one of them faggots.
The FB comments are interesting - feel free to add your own.

And neither are my personal favorites Macho Man and In the Navy!

Such a horrid time we're in. I wish some huge "gay and lesbian" demonstration would to 1) suggest paying attention to reality might be a good idea 2) surface the very serious concern about the in-power Christian Nationalist truly believe that marriage equality is too woke to continue... and indeed many want to make same-sex activity to be criminalized.
But then there are many ways to have fun, in't it?:
Young man, there's a place you can go
I said, young man, when you're short on your dough
You can stay there and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time

#YMCGAY
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 15, 2025 2:17 AM |
The lyric "Fuck my manhole real good at the YMCA" sounds gays to me.

Sidelined and disappeared. It's actually sort of interesting seeing fascism work actually as designed.

You can get yourself clean, you can have a good meal, you can do what ever you feel....yeah not gay at all.

I hope Trump calls it the gay national anthem again so Victors head will explode

YMCA was gay then, and it's gay now.
The reason it gained acceptability was that it was released when gay movement was coming of age--but more importantly--it was released during the disco era, and everyone, gay and straight, just wanted to dance. It went totally mainstream when people attending wedding receptions figured out they could make the YMCA letters with their bodies, mostly with their arms. So the song a dance party with the mother of the bride, single girls and gay guys dating the single girls.
But the song never stopped being gay as hell no matter who tried to homogenize it including motherfucking criminal Trump.
The Village People should not be performing for that asshole. Traitors.

Back then in the ancient "Disco" era, words and phrases were different, but yet the same. "You can get yourself clean" is Ancient Gayonese for "You can douche out your ass". "You can have a good meal" translates to "You can swallow loads" -sometimes at holes in partitions. "You can do whatever you feel"- that translation is similar to modern Gayonese, but insinuates one is speaking from a sling room in a bathhouse.

YMCA is no fag song, and I'm just the dame who can prove it!

His rambling FB post reads like an Onion article (with spelling errors) written by a Village Idiot. Instead of just saying, "I took the money and ran all the way to Trump's inauguration!", he tries to justify his greed, and somehow ends up, however unintentionally, sounding like a "no homo" disciple of the late Anita Bryant.

I knew the Village People were gay before I knew I was gay.

There is no money in the gay community for The Village People these days. They are making sure they capitalize on this last, unexpected resurgence and ride it as far as they possibly can. I blame them and they are dead to me as performers, but I also understand it’s a hard world and they surely need this given the general age they all must be.
A comment on the suing for calling the song gay. You can sue for slander or libel when someone describes an inanimate object like a song or a painting. Even if they said he was gay, it’s would be extremely unlikely he could sue because he’d have to convince a judge being called gay was actually damaging along with showing proven damages. Long story short, when someone threatens to sue you, you’re safe as a babe in arms. Like a lawyer sending a letter threatening to sue, if they had any chance of being successful they’d be filing a suit, not writing a letter of making a Facebook post.
The most surreal thing about this particular development in the destruction of Democracy is that DL godfather and caftan devotee, Alan Carr, wrote a film which starred two of the most unlikely stars of the MAGA-verse, Caitlyn (the once and forever Bruce) Jenner and The Village People.

YMCA is gayer than a tree full of parrots!
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 15, 2025 4:11 AM |
It's heartening that the only people Trump can get to perform for him are has-beens like The Village People and Kid Rock
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 15, 2025 4:13 AM |
Of course not, because no gay men would ever hook up at the YMCA.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 15, 2025 4:14 AM |
YMCA is as straight as Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott!
by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 15, 2025 4:23 AM |
Everyone associates Village People with gay. Even the dumb QAnon folks. That makes this extra pathetic. Who actually believes this? The lyrics are gay innuendo and the song became popular in general circles because it's catchy. Before we entered this crazy alternate dimension a few years ago, everyone would have admitted that and shrugged it off and kept doing the YMCA motions at weddings. But once again, it's the facts that must be altered because Trump is involved.

make the YMCA letters with their bodies
How do you do the M and A?

I loved disco music but was never a fan of the Village People.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 15, 2025 6:10 AM |
It's about young, wholesome, normal CHRISTIAN men associating with each other to elect Donald J. Trump President. Ungodly homosexuals perverted it for dirty dancing in their dens of iniquity!

R29- I was never a fan of The Village People NOR disco 🕺 music.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 15, 2025 1:27 PM |
R25 The astonishing thing in the MAGA era, right. Lying to your face about something you both know is clearly a lie. "Alternative facts..." And the skillful means of looking up and documenting truth, the digital platforms and browsers, have only increased the likelihood that truth doesn't matter.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 15, 2025 4:00 PM |
It's not about gays! It's a tribute to old, fat, presidents who wear orange pancake makeup
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 15, 2025 6:36 PM |
For decades, conservative assholes HATED the song, because they despise gay men. NOW, Trump likes, it’s perfectly acceptable, to the assholes who loathed it.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | January 15, 2025 6:44 PM |
You can douche your ass, you can swallow a load you can bareback me all night long just does not have the same panache.

Macho Man and In the Navy are totally not gay, either!
