60s Car Art

I wanted to climb into their wide-track world. They always looked so happy in their Pontiac. Obviously, they were fashionable, so that was a big plus. They liked to make dramatic exits with their innumerable friends looking on approvingly in the background. Two guys named Fitzpatrick and Kaufman drew these pictures with one doing the background and one doing the car. They were my favorite artists when I was a kid. The cars were done in a photo-realistic style, but the people and backgrounds were almost pastel cartoons. They were given human expression, though, and always dressed in the latest styles. They also always seemed to be laughing at the natives of the little European villages they were driving through in their gigantic land yacht. "Look at me ha ha, I'm an Ugly American." Still, I wanted to live in their world and become one of them. My dream was to become a cartoon in the South of France!

Wow, they drew this? It looks like a real photograph. There is something ethereal about it. It's beautiful.

In the 1960's, Pontiac was the excitement division of GM. They had the Grand Prix, the Bonneville, the GTO and the Firebird. But their basic cars, the Catalina, the Tempest, were always more exciting than their corresponding cars at Chevy, Oldsmobile and Buick.

Hard to believe the nameplate is now in the automotive graveyard.

The basic Catalinas, the base models, looked expensive. They had just enough chrome trim, full wheel covers, two and three tone interiors. They didn't look stripped down.

Me and a BF bought an old '70 Catalina and drove it cross-country. She had skirts and mag wheels,

Those two artists sold a lot of Pontiacs. After they started doing the ads, Pontiac rose to No. 3 and stayed there. Seemed like all the hot guys at my high school drove GTOs or Firebirds. Even my stuffy stepfather drove a sexy-looking LeMans.

I have the book and it's fantastic.
