If you read between the lines, it's obvious that OP is referring to nonbinary people, and probably doesn't want to explicitly say that word because all posts about trans/nonbinary seem to mysteriously disappear.

The answer is simple: they are obsessed with telling you they "exist" because they know they don't. Yes they are alive and human, but they are either male or female. The category they claim to be doesn't biologically exist.

I would question that there is a faction of that type. I never hear these buzzwords or arguments in real life, only online. So I'm just chalking it off as the usual hyperbole of five posters who want to get a feeling of relevancy.

I have tried to empathize. We keep hearing that "non-binary identities are valid" (per Stonewall in the UK), but I can't think of any public-policy context or serious political or legal context in which "non binary" is relevant or has any valid meaning. For example, if 70% of elementary-school teachers in a given country are female and people feel there should be more of a balance because boys tend to perform better with male role models in the classroom, where do non-binary people come into the picture? When considered in this light, the idea of "non-binary" becomes meaningless and frivolous and little more than a "look" or fashion statement. The phenomenon seems like something that was lifted from Tumblr and (more recently) TikTok and instead of seeping into the real world, should have stayed on social media.

Similarly, the trend of stating one's preferred pronouns started on Twitter (now X). Transgender people would, for understandable reasons, include their pronouns in their bios to indicate how they would like to be referred to by others. Cisgender people on Twitter/X sympathetic to the cause subsequently adopted the trend out of solidarity with trans people, so as to "normalize" and promote the use of pronouns. Then, well-meaning HR people brought declared/preferred pronouns from Twitter/X into the workplace, where in some organizations it even became mandatory for employees to state their pronouns in various business situations. Whereas on Twitter/X it made sense, in the "real world" it is just plain silly, because 99% of people are not transgender. This is part of what has unleashed the current backlash: something that belonged strictly on social media has been lifted from its original context, and has stopped making sense to many people, who don't remember (or were never aware of) the original intention. Overreach, if you will.

I don’t think it’s really fair to compare gay to nonbinary. As a gay man, I’m not pretending to be something I’m not. People are allowed to have their own opinions as to whether my attraction to other men is immoral or invalid or whatever. But I’ve never claimed to be anything other than what I am - a biological male. That is very different from claiming to be some spectrum of genders that has no basis in biology.

The same is true for the old school transsexuals. They never claimed to be the same as a biological woman. They acknowledged that they were a biological male who wanted to transition and live life as a woman.

The fact is no one cares about the minutiae of your identity. Really, they don't; and the assumption that they do reveals something deeply unflattering about the person making it. I think this is a lesson most of us learn in our teen years, and definitely by our 20s.
