Cynthia Erivo ‚— hoo boy
Me, me, I, myself, me, me, me. Is she trying to out-Porter Billy Porter?
[quote]“Dare to be. Dare to adventure. There’s frivolity and joy in it. The way I dress is innately queer. I’m trying to be myself,” says Erivo, adding after a knowing pause that her style is meant to be “limitless.”
[quote]“I have a real sort of ownership of who I am and what I want. I have some control over how things happen for myself, which is a really powerful thing,” says Erivo, who has her own production company and is most excited to create projects for future stars. Then the actress puts it in pop-culture parlance, “But as the old adage goes, with great power comes great responsibility.”
[quote]Another responsibility Erivo relished? Being nosy. She tried to understand every job, from the assistant director calling “cut!” to the wind-machine operator. “That’s my commitment to myself to make sure that everyone feels seen and acknowledged,” she says. It was “a bit jarring at first” for “Wicked” director Jon M. Chu (“Crazy Rich Asians,” “In the Heights”). “It’s like, ‘We got this. Don’t worry. You just figure out your own thing,’” he says.

Based on the last paragraph of OP's post, she's clearly fashioning herself after Streisand who was so "inquisitive" about filmmaking during the production of FUNNYGIRL, veteran director William Wyler jokingly (I think) quipped to a crew person, "You'll have to forgive Barbra. This is her first time directing a movie."

I don't think she is ugly, more striking. But her grooming is aggressive and not pleasant. She was pleasant!! on Seth Meyers recently. I think the issue people have is grandness. And relatively young.
The entertainment figure she minds me of is Miss Calypso e.g Dr. Prof. Maya Angelou. As a liberal I was trained to tolerate it in a person of colour, I mean maybe tolerate it a bit more than a white grandee for example.
But people of any race have a limit for pretension.
Gore Vidal was so pretentious and grand but he didn't get massacred for it as much as James Baldwin, for example.
It does feel racist for everyone to pile on about Erivo's pretension.

Billy Porter has been mentioned for comparison purposes. Billy Porter is mostly very pleasant in interviews - which is the only way I know him besides his performances, and his PAP strolls in outrageous fashion. So he's super grand and histrionic but I mostly get a kid out of his shtick. When his performances are good I enjoy them. He had several very good scenes in Pose, in my opinion, and was overall good. When his performances fail - like the solo tour, I can kinda of laugh and say, oh well, he's one who shouldn't be too much in control and direct himself. There are plenty of entertainers like that.

You just don't need to say this shit out loud. It's excessive and it shows you don't have much control, social boundaries, or even social intelligence.
The press build-up for this thing has been exhausting.
It did NOT need this much press - Wicked is very well known and loved. She acts like she conceived the play and role - tons of actresses have played this.
Just be humble and say that you hope you did a good job. And there's no way she got only $1 million - she may have got a percentage. That's bullshit.

Wicked ‘s budget was $150 million. They probably spent more on chicken wraps than they did for Cynthia.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | November 25, 2024 7:58 AM

I'm surprised the pay disparity between Erivo and Grande is so large. But I suppose if they'd got someone lesser known to play Glinda, there'd have been more in the budget for Erivo.
I mean, $1m is a massive sum of money anyway, but $15m is crazy money. Is she even that good? She's more of a singer than an actress, though obviously there's crossover.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | November 25, 2024 11:49 AM
|
1 Million sounds like a lot of money. But it's not like Cynthia is pocketing 1 million dollars. 30% probably comes of the top to pay her team - agents, managers, publicist, et al.. So she is left with 700K. Assuming she just has taxes and nothing else that needs to be taken out, you are talking about 480K maybe. And for a role of a lifetime in a major motion picture as a co-lead that you have to do months and months of publicity for, 480K doesn't feel like a lot in comparison to what other actors normally get paid for that type of work.
