Glorification of non-hot people as hot, in American media
So, on the Bonnie Franklin thread, we were having a discussion of why some people who were in fact quite homely or at least quite average were presented as "hot" sexbombs on TV shows back in that era. Bonnie Franklin and Mac Phillips were the subjects at hand but of course there are others.
But the practice seems to be dying off? The last instance of this I can detect is Ted Danson. Is this still a thing?

Ted Danson was very good looking. Watching reruns of Cheers, he just was. Harpo who dose other people you mentioned?

Justin Timberlake. Looks like an inbred hillbilly, sounds like a whiny teenager.

I don't think Katy Perry is ugly. I have never understood why white people thought Britney Spears is so much prettier than Christina Aguilera. Christina is better looking.

I hate to say it and I love my black queen but Michelle Obama. When Obama FIRST hit the scene, mad black people was like "she aint that good looking". Then the media transformed her into some type Amazonian black goddess. I mean I guess her whole aura. Sometimes being so positive and intelligent can make you pretty. She definitely isn't ugly though.

R33: I think this was a reaction to Me Too. The woke progressives are anti-beauty and anti-tradition. Therefore, Hollywood decided to only seek out men who were devoid not just of toxic aspects of masculinity but all things masculine. The studios figured a boring, feminized leading man not too threatening to women and girls is what was needed in the wake of the Me Too movement. Personally, I think the movement actually did more to women and it created a discriminatory, misandrist culture. Men suddenly became the new women: an oppressed class. I'm hopeful that Hollywood will learn its lesson and stop with these pointless, little gender wars. Perhaps one good thing to come out of all of it was that it did away with that ridiculous notion that the only truly good looking people in the world are famous. I promise you'll find at your local Target at least 2-3 guys who are way better looking than Tom Holland.

This is what happened...
During its Golden Age (c. 1930s-1960s) Hollywood was run by religious conservatives via the Motion Picture Production Code (aka Hays Code) which put emphasis on beauty and dictated what was appropriate to show on screen.
Ultra-liberals took over in the late '60s and dismantled the Code, ushering in the New Hollywood, which lasted through the '70s. In this era, the rating system was established (G, PG, R, X; later PG-13 and NC-17) and sex/nudity/profanity became widespread in movies. Also, emphasis was put on homely actors/actresses as an antidote against the earlier studio system. Lots of depressing, dystopian movies in the '70s, too.
By the '80s, with Reagan in office for most of the decade, Hollywood went back toward the center and moderates were in charge. This was a return to excess and beauty, which lasted through the '90s and 2000s.
By the early 2010s, Hollywood began shifting far-left and once again started hiring ugly performers instead. "Woke" is very anti-beauty.
But I have a feeling that conservatives will take over Hollywood again, almost 100 years since the last time.
Maybe they'll give us a Golden Age II with more beautiful actors.

He's known for playing bland nerd Peter Parker. You're doing that thing conservative people do where they use the success of one unconventional actor as proof that standards are dead. Women like Jeremy Allen White and Benedict Cumberbatch are popular because of their personalities and potent charisma as more as for their looks. They find these two sexy, but no one is pretending they’re actually unconventionally handsome, the way that John Krasinski and Barry Keoghan work hard to present themselves.

John Krasinski is well over 6’ with broad shoulders and a full head of thick hair. And his face is inoffensive, even if it isn’t handsome.
Adam Driver has the height and shoulders and a very distinctive, masculine face that would be ugly on someone that wasn’t as well-built. He benefits from anti-pretty.
Ryan Gosling is the one that really confuse me. He’s so average.

It's incredible to look back on the 70s and see how many plain and unconventional (by today's standards) A-list actors and actresses there were. Tommy Lee Jones had a unibrow and Robert Duvall was balding (but not in the clean-shaven way someone like, say, the Rock is today).
