John Oliver spent part of his Sunday evening tearing into President-elect Donald Trumpās Cabinet nominees, calling them awful āeven by his low standards.ā
But he saved his harshest quips for former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), Trumpās pick for attorney general. Oliver said that when Gaetz was in high school, he was voted āmost likely to not be allowed within 500 feet of here.ā
Gaetz was under federal investigation in a sex trafficking probe involving a 17-year-old girl, although no charges were brought and the investigation was eventually dropped. He was also under investigation by the House Ethics Committee until his resignation last week.
Oliver played a supercut in which Gaetz was blasted by conservatives, including former national security adviser John Bolton, who said Gaetzās selection āmust be the worst nomination for a Cabinet position in American history.ā
āIt might,ā Oliver agreed. āBut get used to it, because āthe worst blank in American historyā is going to be this administrationās MO going forward. So, get ready for the worst Easter egg roll in American history. The Easter Bunny will be on fire, every egg will be filled with expired mayonnaise, and all the kids who donāt win will be immediately put into foster care.ā
Oliver noted that one Republican lawmaker said āare you shittinā me?ā when he was told Trump had picked Gaetz.
He called that reaction āobjectively the correct response to the idea that this guy could be attorney general: a man who my lawyers insist I cannot call āJeffrey Epstein if he went to shittier beaches,ā so I am not going to do that.ā
