Does The Towering Inferno Hold Up, Eldergays?

I've never seen it.

No, it falls down

by Anonymousreply 1November 12, 2024 3:52 AM

It's too darn hot.

by Anonymousreply 2November 12, 2024 3:57 AM

That was the PERFECT first response, r1!

by Anonymousreply 3November 12, 2024 3:58 AM

R1 beat me to it.

OP, IMO, the movie is far too much of a soap opera to, uh, hold up.

If you like Paul Newman and Steve McQueen looking all sweaty and intense, go for it.

I wonder if OJ and Faye got along?

What did Miss Jennifer Jones think of Faye? Did Susan Flannery try and flirt with her?

by Anonymousreply 5November 12, 2024 4:33 AM

One of my favorite movies. R1 is not right. This is pre-9/11. The building burns but does not come down and people in the building live.

By the way, it was shot on the same soundstage as “Bones.”

by Anonymousreply 7November 12, 2024 4:36 AM

Also, the same soundstage as The King & I, Miracle on 34th Street, and Hello Dolly.

by Anonymousreply 8November 12, 2024 4:37 AM

That’s a penis

by Anonymousreply 9November 12, 2024 4:44 AM

Poor Susan Flannery.

by Anonymousreply 10November 12, 2024 4:44 AM

Watch it, OP, and let your fireman fantasies run wild!

It's an ugly film. Immolation is perhaps the most painful death and the movie treats it as eye candy.

The cast is amazing but the director manages to get absolute shit performances out of everyone.

The idea that someone would build this thing in San Francisco is laughable. The novel the film is based on is set in an unnamed city that is quite clearly Chicago.

The actual fire alternates between ground-breaking realism (the understanding of how backdrafts work) and sheer stupidity (the building keep blowing glass, steel splinters, furniture and bodies out and the plaza below is a clean as a whistle. The real problem with fires of this magnitude is being able to safely access or address the structure from close quarters).

Faye looks lovely and Newman has a minute in his undies and, well, that's it.

And what about Cornell's big scene?

by Anonymousreply 13November 12, 2024 5:03 AM

Yeouch!

by Anonymousreply 14November 12, 2024 8:45 AM

He’s absolutely stunning OP. Is/was he family?

by Anonymousreply 15November 12, 2024 8:53 AM

Yes, it's a masterpiece of 70s melancholia and harbinger of western decline.

by Anonymousreply 16November 12, 2024 10:18 AM

Blazing suspense.

There's no way down.

There's no way out.

R15 - I'm afraid I have no idea. Perhaps someone on here knows/knew Cornell and can add some insight?
