I’ve never confessed this to anyone before, but I was madly obsessed with Roddy McDowell when I was first realizing that I was gay at around age 11 in the early 70s.

Apparently not sufficiently obsessed to learn how to spell his name.

ALL of them. Every single one has turned out to have feet of clay. I have abysmal judgement, apparently.

Tom Brokaw (in the 1980s).

Lord Merton on Downton Abbey (I don't even know the actor's name).

by Anonymousreply 15November 9, 2024 4:17 PM

David Letterman (during the run of his show - not now)

by Anonymousreply 16November 9, 2024 4:28 PM

I'm not really embarrassed at all, but some people think it's peculiar that my first real "yeah I'm probably gay" "crush" was Mike Tyson. My middle school library had a magazine rack and he was in Life or Time magazine - standing in his boxing shorts, shirtless, hands on his hips, sweaty. This is when he was first became a boxing champion and was dating Robin Givens. I was briefly obsessed with him. He guest starred on Webster - a show I never watched - but I watched that episode. I bought the National Enquirer when he was featured just to see more pictures. He was so hot to me. And, I continued to like his type throughout my life - thick, big neck, broad features - no matter the guy's race.

by Anonymousreply 23November 9, 2024 4:43 PM

Is Richard Dawson during the early seasons of Match Game embarrassing?

My crush had faded by the time he started Family Feud

I was going to confess my embarrassing crush. But after seeing people offer names like Tony Dow, Ed Bradley, and William Shatner, I feel like my (long ago) crush reaches a whole other level of shame.

Al Gore? In the 90s, I thought he was HOT, and he was still a good-looking man in the 00s. Except for Newsweek calling him "Al Gorgeous," I felt like I was the only one. I once told a guy in an online chat that he looked like Al Gore (meant it as a compliment!), and he was like "WHAT?!!?!!?!"

I had the hots for all the male actors in Weird Science, particularly the nerd who woke up in Kelly's underwear.

In my defense, I was 14 and probably would have developed a crush on any dude who took his shirt off or looked like he might.

by Anonymousreply 53November 9, 2024 8:21 PM

I have always found Joey Fatone incredibly sexy, even when he looked like a Jersey Shore cast member, during his "bleached porcupine" hair era and now that he resembles used car salesman. Sorry, but that man looks like he would be wild in bed.

I had an enormous crush on George Brett when I was 12! I am from Kansas City. I made my grandmother take me to see the Royals' homecoming parade after they won against the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1985 World Series. George rode by on a horse -- I was FREAKING OUT.

Not embarrassing per se, but I certainly cannot relate now to my child self. How basic is that, to crush on a famous baseball player? As an adult I haven't cared about any sports in about 30 years, except Olympic gymnastics and diving. But when you are a kid, you are an open channel. And as a Missouri native, that particular World Series, a civil war no less, was enthralling. George Brett was my guy.

Another one for John McEnroe here, R31. He was SO HOT. His Jew fro, his tantrums, his sweatbands, his little shorts. His muscular legs. His Irish features. His talent and drive. Heaven. And he still is, honestly, As a former art historian I renewed my crush for awhile when I found out he had segued into the art gallery space in NYC. He's just so unapologetically himself. And I loved Tatum, too.

I was never much of an NSYNC fan, I preferred BSB, but having hung out with Joey at several cons I can tell you that he is not only incredibly sexy but such a sweet guy.

Seriously, he is no slouch either. I know people tease him about being Joey FAT ONE but he is in great shape. I think he just photographs that way or something.

He is marriage material.

So, you've met him, R78? You cannot believe how jealous I am. Obviously, it's positive that I have never met him because I know that I would embarrass myself by behaving like a hysterical fangirl, but I agree that he's incredibly sexy. The reason why I have posted about him in here is because during the Boyband Era of the late 90s / early 00s, everyone said that he was fat and unattractive while obsessing about Timberlake and Nick Carter.

by Anonymousreply 85November 9, 2024 10:51 PM

A real person I had an embarrassing crush on: He was 37, I was 49 and in the throes of a midlife crisis. He was adorable, probably Aspergers. Worked on film crews. We met at a Con. We saw each other for a year and a half, texting constantly in between trysts. We lived three hours apart and would meet half way in New Haven for sex and great dinners, and lots of laughs and cuddling. We had a blast. I saw him as someone I could nurture and adore. He saw me as an elder with wisdom and life experience. We had sexual chemistry. But he felt pressure from his family to settle down, which at 37 (and on the spectrum, something his family denied) seemed unobtainable. He wanted me, but also was so up in his neurotic head all the time that he ended up breaking things off to find a woman to have a family with. I was crushed. CRUSHED. It took me a two years to recover, and now I feel disgusted by the idea of dating. I'm only 51, I know I have a huge swath of life ahead of me, but I really was turned off by this experience. It was gut-wrenching. I realize that I ignored a ton of red flags and now I don't trust myself to choose wisely. I feel embarrassed by this crush. Embarrassed that I thought a millenial and a Gen X could couple up and embarrassed at how many red flags and weirdness I sucked up just to be with this guy. Embarrassed how desperate I was, and how destroyed I was when he broke it off. It was a very stupid experience.

by Anonymousreply 92November 9, 2024 11:58 PM

I wish it didn't happen, R89. But it did. I got a DUI in the throes of the break up and it fucked up my entire life for awhile. If I wanted to make something up I would have been much more creative. "He was a French financier, I was a male model in Paris, his wife found out" etc etc. This experience was very sweet, very silly and very real. I learned some lessons and it fast-tracked me through my manic midlife crisis and placed my back down on solid ground, so I guess maybe it was worthwhile. Also our relationship was during Covid so I cannot complain I got some sex and companionship during a time when many people were feeling very alone.

I'm still pissed about his moratorium on his memoirs. No one who cares would still be alive. I have to admire his discretion, though.

Bill Mumy when he was a little kid on Lost in Space. Tbf, I was about the same age as him.

Bob Barker, Richard Dawson, Grayson Hall, Anthony Geary, Paul Lynde, Richard Simmons - I guess those could be considered embarrassing.

by Anonymousreply 142November 11, 2024 9:01 AM

Oh and the magnificent Charles Nelson Reilly - and Tony Randall.

by Anonymousreply 143November 11, 2024 9:02 AM

Barry Manilow. Until the late 80s. Not since.

Aquaman, Bam Bam and Race Bannon - obviously I liked blonds.

Racer X, older brother of Speed Racer.

I wanted to down on him while he's wearing the mask, swallow his babies and get fucked hard.

I got a older man (20 yrs. Old) to put on the Racer X mask when I was 11 yrs. old. My FB older brother Joey, we had fun.

Peter Baker-NYT reporter and MSNBC reporter too.

During the lockdown, I had told my ex-wife& her wife about my fantasy with Peter Baker (and u guys on DL). I wanted to be under his desk while he was talking live on Nicole Wallace's show, servicing him& swallowing his nutt.

Alexandria& Nadine told Peter Baker about my fantasy and when at a dinner party, he told me my ex-wife told him about it. After turning red, my ex told me she never saw me without a comeback.

I had a huge crush on Paul Michael Glaser, who played Hutch on Starsky & Hutch. The crush intensified dramatically with the TV movie The Great Houdini.

R153 Nothing embarrassing about. A lot of us who were young gaylings at the time crushed on him and David Soul.

I couldn't wait to watch Starsky and Hutch every week hoping they'd be shirtless in at least one scene. And if they weren't, I'd just sit in front of the TV and be mesmerized by their bulges and asses in their tight jeans.

by Anonymousreply 154November 11, 2024 5:00 PM

R154 And those sexy sweaters!

by Anonymousreply 155November 11, 2024 5:09 PM

To R155-LOVED those sweaters!!

Got one for Christmas from a normal foster mom, loved it!!

White boy who grew up in middle to upper middle class leafy NY suburbia. My father was a catholic socialist how made good as an engineer. One time he put us in the station wagon and drove us into Manhattan to show us how the "other half lived". I would have ben the early 70s. He drove us through skid a row - the Bowery when it was really the Bowery - a few times and told us the history of it. Then through the Lower East Side and far East Village, and then up through and around Harlem. I was astonished by all the hot men of color. It was a sweltering day and many were dressed very skimpily. I was supposed to find it all very sobering and yet it was one hot buck after another and I could sometimes see GIANT VPL. I had no idea cocks could be so huge. I was mesmerized the entire tour, and quite hot and bothered.

by Anonymousreply 158November 11, 2024 6:49 PM

R152 - that one is repulsive.

by Anonymousreply 159November 13, 2024 3:53 AM

Dorothy Provine, my first crush. As a little boy.

by Anonymousreply 160November 13, 2024 4:07 AM

Oliver North in the '80s.

I was in grade school during the Iran-Contra Affair, but I thought he was so handsome when I saw him on TV in his uniform on the stand.

I remember I felt compelled to hug him and kiss him on the cheek, because he looked so sad. 😂

Everyone from Badr Hari (no excuse) to Larry David! I don't have a type.

by Anonymousreply 163November 13, 2024 5:33 AM

The Lone Ranger, the TV one. Also, the TV Zorro.

by Anonymousreply 164November 13, 2024 9:18 AM

The TV Zorro was Guy Williams, who later starred in "Lost in Space."

by Anonymousreply 165November 13, 2024 10:20 AM

R161 I met him in the mid-90s. He was breathtaking.

by Anonymousreply 166November 13, 2024 12:53 PM

R166 no way! How did that come about?

by Anonymousreply 167November 14, 2024 2:54 PM

I'm a gay man but when I was very young I had a crush on Anneka Rice. She will only mean anything to other Brits. But I'd go horribly shy whenever she was on the television. I'd blush then run and hide. My dad still likes to bring that up.

by Anonymousreply 168November 14, 2024 3:04 PM

Well, that's a challenge.

I'll see myself out.

by Anonymousreply 169November 14, 2024 3:05 PM

I wasn't embarrassed about crushing on Richard Chamberlain during his "Dr. Kildare" run and then years later when he was in The Thorn Birds.

The embarrassing crush: Barbara Stanwyck on Big Valley and in The Thorn Birds

by Anonymousreply 176November 24, 2024 11:19 PM

I had a crush on Heather Locklear

by Anonymousreply 177November 24, 2024 11:33 PM

I crush on my muse, Lindsey.

by Anonymousreply 178November 25, 2024 10:44 AM

I had a huge crush on the big blond football player/wrestler in my high school. That's not embarrassing, but what is embarrassing is that I'm still in love with him. His wife has a Facebook page and I stalk him on it. He's 60 and graying now, but he's still hot.

by Anonymousreply 180November 27, 2024 8:40 PM

Beyond basic… at 14 I used to tune in regularly to the insipidity of the Dukes of Hazzard, in hopes that we might get a few seconds of gratuitous Bo and Duke shirtlessness, with bonus points for an incestuous vibe.

Bob Denver (back when I was probably 11). I thought he was cute when he played Gilligan.

by Anonymousreply 191November 28, 2024 2:43 AM

Not really embarassing per se but cutie Jeff Goldblum. I was 10 and saw Earth girls are easy and he was the 1st adult male I truly felt a more adult kind of lust for. Before that it was all infantile crushes on boys my age. This was...different.

That reminds me, LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE was a decade before my time, but I grew up watching some of the reruns.

I remember learning t was based on real people and coming across this picture of Almonzo Wilder online.

I was immediately smitten and liked him a lot more than the actor who played him on the TV series. haha
