Suggestions on Things to Watch on Streaming

I have a whole weekend to myself and just want to binge watch something. What do you recommend?

I don't like scary stuff.

Longlegs

by Anonymousreply 2November 2, 2024 8:29 PM

please list the name of the show or movie AND the streaming site. Only listing one or the other isn't gonna cut it, kids.

Industry — Max/HBO

by Anonymousreply 4November 2, 2024 8:43 PM

Nobody should respond. You’re fuckin lazy.

[quote] Only listing one or the other isn't gonna cut it, kids.

Huh?

by Anonymousreply 6November 2, 2024 8:53 PM

Second vote for "Industry".

Also, if you have Apple TV and don't mind subtitles, "La Maison" is a lighter, soapier French version of "Succession" set in the Parisian fashion industry.

by Anonymousreply 7November 2, 2024 9:47 PM

Deceitful Love on Netflix. Plenty of eye candy for gays, and some gay make out scenes. You won't be disappointed (in Italian with subtitles, with incredible scenery to go along with the eye candy). I'm hoping for a second season.

Friends, seasons 1 through 10. Followed by The Morning Show.

If the fashion industry is your thing, VELVET on PBS tells the story of a Madrid fashion house in the early '60s.

Lotsa melodrama, some sex. Subtitled. From Walter Presents.

So many recommendations around these parts. Say perhaps what interests you and some of these queens may offer a decent suggestion. I for one never thought The Traitors (all versions) would be so fun.

I had never even heard of it but I really enjoyed AlphaHouse. 21 episodes it is available on Freevee is you don't have Prime

Four Republican senators share the same D.C. house rental, and face re-election battles, looming indictments, and parties -- all with a sense of humor.

Hundreds of Beavers on Prime. It's a modern silent film about an Apple Jack salesman.

by Anonymousreply 19November 3, 2024 3:12 AM

AlphaHouse is 10 years old with an amazing guest cast… Bill Murray, Amy Sedaris, Cynthia Nixon. I’m surprised it’s so unknown. I’ll check it out.

r24 -- the epIsode watched last evening had Don Alberto get kabonged on the head during a robbery of his office. The thief who rifled the office safe was hired by his evil step-mother! Ay-caramba!

Still Up on Apple TV.

MSNBC's Rachel Maddow has a guest appearance on the final episode playing herself. Joy Reid also has a cameo.

Outsiders 33 episodes streaming on Prime, Hulu and Tubi.

It is a little off beat but I enjoyed it, because I am also a little off beat but not like these people. It is about a community of outsiders who have lived on a mountain in Kentucky that they don't own for hundreds of years, they purposely keep themselves separate from the communities below except to steal from them. A coal company owns the mountain they call home and wants to level the mountain to get to the coal and the people in the communities below want the jobs that the coal company will bring. The people who have lived on the mountain for years won't leave and promise to fight to the death. Conflict and drama ensues.

A beautiful Korean movie on Amazon "Road to Boston" about a Korean teenager who runs the 1947 Boston Marathon, the first international sporting event post WWII. It's like a Spielberg movie in its style, and is a mix of "Chariots of Fire" and "Rocky". I loved it.

Fellow Travelers on Showtime/Paramount+

by Anonymousreply 30November 3, 2024 8:24 PM

The Outlaws - Group of criminals sentenced to 'community service' - with Christopher Walken. Created by Stephen Merchant who also co-stars. Free on Prime. I'm only in the middle of the first season but enjoying it so far.

Line of Duty on Peacock. It's a British crime series.

by Anonymousreply 33November 5, 2024 5:35 PM

I started Fellow Travellers, and it was very well made, but it really was of the "Life's a bitch and then you die" genre.

Silo was such a bust. First two episodes had me hooked but then it just turned into something else entirely boring.

by Anonymousreply 35November 22, 2024 6:29 PM

Alpha House was really good. A shame it wasn't renewed.

I highly recommend Borgen (Netflix), an incredibly absorbing, addicting show about Denmark's first woman prime minister and the press corps that covers her. Hard to explain why it's so good but the ratings on IMDB don't lie. It's up there with The Sopranos and The Wire.

Another vote for How to Die Alone.

Also, Nobody Wants This on Netflix.

by Anonymousreply 40November 22, 2024 9:00 PM

Thanks, R38. Sharon Horgan was on the Today Show either last week or earlier this week and they mentioned S2. I cancelled my AppleTV+ subscription but may have to renew it for S2.

I haven't watched the CBS version of Ghosts yet, but the BBC version is a completely charming, escapist delight. I resisted it for a long time because I thought it wasn't going to be good, but it's one of the best shows I've seen in a while.

by Anonymousreply 42November 22, 2024 9:10 PM

On HULU "The Great" A humorous look at Catherine The Great of Russia.

Nicholas Hoult is adorable and hilarious as the Czar Peter son of Peter the Great, Elle Fanning as Catherine The Great.

This is one of the most enjoyable shows I have watched in a while and there are three seasons of it

R34 back again. I eventually finished watching Fellow Travelers and what I said before remains true. Unfortunately it really stays with you, because the last episode is misery personified.

On the other hand, it's an amazing series, brilliantly written, performed and designed, which beautifully records nearly 40 years of gay history through the medium of a romance fundamentally distorted by the distortions of its times. All the male principals are gay, and so are most of the key production team.

We appear to be entering new distorting times, and whenever that happens we need our history more than ever. So I thought it was important to come back and urge people to stock up on tissues and courage and just watch it.

The Residence on Netflix. Snappy dialogue, familiar comedy faces, Giancarlo Esposito is wonderful.

by Anonymousreply 47April 5, 2025 6:18 AM

Severance on Apple. How to die alone is great, CBS Ghosts is great, funny, a bit of a tear jerker, just nice, a feel good show. After Party on Apple, there's now a second season, I was glad to see Tiffany Hadish again. Oh and Party Down, with Adam Scott before he looks weird in Severance, Also has Lizzy Caplan, Jane Lynch, Jennifer Coolidge and Megan Mullaly.

by Anonymousreply 48April 5, 2025 6:49 AM

An oldie but a goodie, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver - 12 seasons on Max.

by Anonymousreply 49April 5, 2025 8:43 AM

My Brilliant Friend on Max.

by Anonymousreply 50April 5, 2025 10:42 AM

Adolescence on Netflix is incredibly good, but you need to watch all the episodes for it to really sink in. Worth the time and effort.

by Anonymousreply 51April 5, 2025 7:40 PM

Somebody Somewhere on Max. A nice watch. I can’t remember how old/new it is.

by Anonymousreply 52April 5, 2025 7:46 PM

Oh yes R52! Somebody, somewhere is excellent, a tear jerker but hopeful too.

by Anonymousreply 53April 6, 2025 1:45 AM

"My Brilliant Friend" seconded.

by Anonymousreply 54April 6, 2025 1:51 AM

Enlightened on Netflix. Laura dern. I really liked it. Good dialogue with narrative by protagonist Dern some might find cliched and overwritten. I’m a writer and if I could something like that I’d be happy

by Anonymousreply 55April 6, 2025 2:00 AM

Tubi has some very good LGBT history documentaries. Free but with a few ads.

by Anonymousreply 56April 6, 2025 3:24 AM

Which ones did you like r56?

by Anonymousreply 57April 6, 2025 4:31 PM

The Adolescence on Netflix. Only four episodes and sucks you in right away.

I take back my recommendation of The Residence. It goes flat after 4 episodes. Sorry.

by Anonymousreply 60April 7, 2025 4:32 AM

I can’t believe we’ve haven’t talked about these two 1970s movies starring Lucille Ball that I have never in my life heard of. They keep popping up on Tubi, both costarring Art Carney. What Now Catherine Curtis? And Happy Anniversary and goodbye. WTH?

[quote]Tubi has some very good LGBT history documentaries. Free but with a few ads.

That's very true but I always loathe recommending Tubi because it is a FOX and Rupert Murdoch owned property that specifically targets the Black, Gay, and Latino communities to get its viewership numbers so that increases its valuation. However, you cannot dispute its very deep and diverse LGBT content. It's what HEREtv and LOGO should be but isn't.

Now, with that on the table, I do have two films to recommend that are on Tubi. They're fun films to watch on a rainy day or if you want to check/send emails from time to time while watching television. They're so bad that they're really good!

"Say, Yes"

and then its sequel

"Baby Steps"

by Anonymousreply 63April 7, 2025 4:23 PM

[quote] if you have Apple TV and don't mind subtitles, "La Maison" is a lighter, soapier French version of "Succession" set in the Parisian fashion industry.

I second this one. Beautiful clothes, locations, actors, and an engaging but non-original storyline. Hatfields and McCoys redux

by Anonymousreply 64April 7, 2025 6:57 PM

Yellowstone

1883

1923

All very enjoyable and gruesome, at times.
