I always think of character actors as people you've seen playing smaller roles in a number of films but don't know their name. Most on this list seems to be known leading actors.

r20 Yes; and most often they have a particular air or shtick which means they play the same sort of [italic]character[/italic] in most or all of their films: Mobsters, sidekicks, drunks, aristocrats, captains of industry, hijinks-prone collegiates, gung-ho soldiers, etc., etc. The thing is, if they're attractive enough and have some talent, they tend to graduate to a wider range of roles and aren't looked on as "character actors" any more.

I think of Néstor Carbonell as a character actor. In his early career, he even said he was always hired to be some character with a thick Spanish accent and people thought he actually talked like that. Even today, he's hired as the Spanish character for a few episodes in the new version of Shogun.

I still laugh about Sawyer in "Lost" referring to his Richard Alpert character as "your buddy out there with the eyeliner."
