I’m sure it’s difficult to balance self-respect, honesty and the demands of being a teenage heart-throb. He has my sympathy for being caught in that maelstrom as a gayling. But I think it’s rather cynical to play the coming out card just as your career seems to be over, and I don’t like blaming the delay on confusion.

When I was growing up gays were all but invisible, and being gay was seen as shameful secret . In that environment, a certain amount of confusion and struggle was quite normal. Today, I don’t believe that anyone has trouble knowing what it means to be attracted to your own sex.

I can’t really speak to the degree to which his religion created conflicts for him that he needed to sort out. But if that is the case what you are facing is confusion about your religion, not confusion about your sexuality.
